Production Review
For this major assignment we were given a product and ad to create an advertising campaign for
them. We started of looking at existing adverts for NIKE to give us some ideas as to the techniques
and styles that they normally use.
Following that we had to do some idea generation to develop a plan for our TV advertisement. We
each took a role in production and I was the director as the idea for the final TV advert was mine. As
well as being a director I also had time to be a ‘camera man’ (or in my case, the camera woman).
Other people took the roles of actors and dealt with paper work.
The next step was to storyboard our idea, so we drew out how the shoots will look on paper. Then
we were ready to go out filming.
The places we selected for filming were school corridors, gym and the area outside. It wasn’t hard to
film, although the difficulties (and also the worst part) lied in fact, that the actors weren’t willing to
cooperate and act in front of the camera.
From the advertising techniques I used a visual story and make it into a dramatic conflict. Also I tried
to evoke somehow the sad emotions in my advert.
We all had to edit our own version on Premier, and only editing techniques I used were simple cuts,
black and white scenes, black screen and after that the logo with subtitles.
My idea for the print advert was a bit spontaneous, I just knew it will be someone who felt off the
treadmill (as our slogan sounds – treadmills don’t get you anywhere fast). Surprisingly the model on
the photo seems like his legs are floppy and unable to move.
For designing this advert I used Adobe Photoshop, as it was quite easy to use, and it was already
installed on the PC.
I’m not sure about the advertising techniques, as during creating the print advert I haven’t really
thought about them. Albeit there was probably used an exaggeration and problem (but without
specified solution).
The final and only decision about my radio commercial was, or better said – were – combat boots.
I’ve chosen them, as I admire them so much, and also I have the ready idea what to do.
The whole process wasn’t hard or complicated; as said before, I knew the script already (in my head)
and then just simply recorded my own boots sound, the voice of one person from my class saying
the text, and then edited them to let them sound much better than originals. The most difficult part
was to find out (and rather decide which one) the music in the background. I haven’t added any
ready FX, only the sounds I recorded.
Advertising techniques for the radio advert are: lifestyle and rebel.
During the whole process I leant that the advertising is just an awful thing which exist only to
confuse people, hypnotise them and force... that’s mean to encourage the target audience to buy
particular products at least once.
The difficulties I suffered from are described above, but for the summarising I might tell there were
mainly from the side of other people in my group, which are lazy to work on the given task. They
didn’t show any willingness to work and act for the adverts (except Ben, who helped with overall
idea and script).
The difference I would do if I’ll have to do the project again is basically that I won’t agree to repeat it
all.
