Radio Advert
Evaluation
1) What creative decisions did
you have to make to solve
problems and how did this depart
from your original plan?
 We followed our original plan/script pretty
consistently, one thing that we did remove is
at the beginning we where planning on
having laughing children to go along with
the line ‘Do you loose all your fights at
school?’. But I decided it didn’t fit in with the
theme of the rest of the advert.
 Another thing we changed was we
removed a line of dialogue as it would have
made the advert about 10 seconds longer
than the 30 seconds it needed to be.
2) Both individually and working with
others how did you work and what
challenges did you face?
 The way we worked as a pair was we choose
different roles for each other so we could be as
efficient as possible and take advantages of our
skills. For example as I was writing the words for
the script my partner was typing it up on the
computer with the directions for sounds effects
ect. Another example is that we recorded the
audio as he had a better speaking voice then I
was the one who did the final editing as I had
more experience with the software.
 One of the main challenges we faced was our
original recording had a large eco in the
background. Because of this we had to re-record
in a smaller room which set us back time wise.
3) What advertising techniques did
you use to hook your intended target
audience?
 One of the advertising techniques was rhetorical
questions, this gives us a way to give all the
questions but in a way that doesn’t sound like we
are talking at the listener.
 Second we used catchy music in the
background which means when ever they here
that music or music similar they will always think of
Rent a Sumo.
 Third we added comedy such as sound effects
and jokes which means the listener will be
entertained and might even mention it to a
friend if they found it funny.
4) How did technology enable the
creative process? Was it difficult to
use any of the equipment and did
you learn any skills?
 Technology made the whole process much
easier as it let us get the appropriate sound
effect much quicker and easier than it would
have been without it. Also the quality of the
audio sounds much better than it would have
otherwise as we had good equipment.
 As I have quite a bit of experience with the
software and equipment we used to edit I didn’t
face any problems in the editing stage of
creating the advert. Because of this I didn’t learn
any new skills however it is always good to
practice so you don’t get worse at the skill.
5) What conventions of radio
adverts have you used or not
used and why?
 SFX – The SFX we used where a gong and rainforest
sounds to stereotype Japan.
 Jingle – We changed the tempo halfway through the
song as it sounds catchy.
 Beds – The bed is authentic Japanese music to go along
with the theme of the advert.
 Crossfades – We faded between the 2 soundtracks so it
didn’t sound jumpy.
 Voice Over – Our voice over is confident and speaks
quickly as it means people will be more interested in
buying plus we can fit more information into 30 seconds.
 Stereotypes – As our brand was for a Japanese sumo
wrestler we used stereotypical Japanese music and sound
effects.
6) What or who are you
representing in your advert and
how?
 The company we made up to represent in our
advert is called ‘Rent a Sumo’, this made up
company offers the ability to rent a Japanese
sumo wrestler for £40 an hour.
 The way we decided to represent them is being
as stereotypical as possible using Japanese
music, Japanese culture sound effects and even
a Japanese word at the end.
 We did this because we thought if there was a
company that actually did offer this Sumo that is
how they would represent themselves. We also
used comedy as it is a funny company and
concept.
7) What feedback did you get
and did this help you realize
anything about your product?
 The feedback we got about our product was
positive, everyone who heard it thought the script
was funny and the sound effects/music fitted with
the theme.
 One criticism we did get was that the sound quality
was not as good as it good be with words
beginning with S making Sss sounds. However we
didn’t have any popping.
 I thought that the editing was slightly basic and
maybe vocal effects would have made it more
interesting. However it being simple also makes it
easier to listen too.
