HA4 – Objects of Desire
Production Log

Wednesday 26th
March 2014
I was slightly delayed in starting this assignment and
did not begin ‘HA4 Task 1’ until the 26th
of March-
almost a week late. I spent this first week researching
into my chosen object of desire and looking at the
codes and conventions of similar products. I
presented my finding on a word document before
uploading it to my blog later on in the week.

The week commencing 1st April I began
working on HA4 Task 2: Ideas Generation.
Using Mind Genius I produced a mind map
that summed up everything BarryM stands for
and what they represent
to give me a starting point for my
own advertisement. As the week
progressed I began developing a
moodboard using PowerPoint
Presentation by placing all my
ideas using both written work and
imagery on too one slide. Once I
had completed my moodboard, I
chose the idea I was most happy
with, whilst also making sure it
was realistic and I was capable of bringing it to life. I had seen an
animation on You Tube which was the inspiration behind my own
stop motion idea. During our lesson I began working on my
outline PowerPoint before pitching it to Harry- once my idea was
given the ok it was decided that I would use Premiere Pro to edit
my sequence together.
2. Sunday 13th

During the second weekend of Easter Half term I spent it taking some test footage for my
advertisement. I set up my camera exactly as it would be when I began filming for real.

HA4 Task 3: Pre-Production was a fairly straight forward task that took me only a week to
complete. I spent the majority of our Wednesday morning lesson producing a detailed
storyboard before scanning it in and uploading it to my blog. Since my advertisement is a
fairly simplistic stop motion animation, I did not require
much pre-production paperwork, other than a call-sheet
and pre-production plan.
I had initially decided that I would be using ‘Mr. Sandman’
by the Puppini for my advertisement; however I later
changed it to ‘The Charleston’ by the Green Hill
Instrumental Band.

I knew that creating my advertisement would be very time
consuming so I planned to film it over one weekend. The setting was
fairly simple and only consisted of a red blanket placed over a table
as a backdrop and my hands. I decided that I would be painting my
nails black since it’s such a bold colour that stands out and I am then
able to add colour to the Nails in Photoshop. This saved me a lot of
time which I didn’t have! It meant I didn’t have to keep painting my
nails and then sit around waiting for them to dry. I took a total of 87
photos on day one of filming. The photos were taken using a Nikon
D3100 and a college tripod. At the end of the day I took a look through the images and
had a go at editing a rough sequence in movie make just to get a feel of what it would look
like once I edit it properly in Premiere Pro. On day two I took another 113 photo meaning
I had now taken all the photos I would be requiring. To save time, rather than taking the
same photo twice I would be using some of the same photos.

May 2014
I had originally planned to paint my nails a new colour for each photograph; however I
discovered early on that this was very time consuming and would cause me to fall behind.
After a discussion with Harry it was decided that I would paint my nails with a bold
colour- I chose black- and then add colour to them in Photoshop. This is what I began
doing the week commencing 12th
May. The process was very simple; I simply used the
magnetic laso tool to highlight the nail, then added colour using the paintbrush. The only
downside to this was that it was still quite time consuming and took me three days to
complete. During lesson on the 21st
May I decided I didn’t like the way the photos looked
and whilst I had not originally intended on doing so, I added a posterize style effect to the
images. The style was added by clicking on FILTER>ARTISTIC>POSTERIZE. The first
photo was done with aid from Harry; however I quickly picked up the process. It took me
the entire week to get through every single photo.

Having now edited all the photos, I could now begin editing my sequence together in
Premiere Pro. I was quite confident in using the software since I had some knowledge on
it. Since my Advertisement is a stop-motion, editing the sequence was an extremely
simple process. I had numbered the images beforehand in the correct order I wanted them
to appear. This meant I simply had to import the file with all my images in and then drag
and drop it into the workspace. The only major change I made was changing the speed and
duration of the video from one minute to thirty seconds.
I had chosen to use ‘The Charleston’ by the Green Hill Instrumental Band as my
soundtrack; however I could not find a copy of it anywhere. In the end I managed to
download the song from You Tube and convert it to an MP3. I then simply imported the
song into Premiere Pro and using the Razor Tool I cut it down to the size I wanted having
chosen which part of the song I wanted to use prior to the lesson.

With assistance from Harry I rendered my video then exported it out, before uploading
to my blog.

Having now finished my advertisement I began working on HA4 Task 6- the review. It was
a fairly simple task and by the end of the day I had it uploaded to my blog. I added the
last few details to my production log diary, before uploading it to my blog.
