The document provides a self-evaluation of a student's advertisement production assignment. The student struggled with time management and coming up with initial ideas, rushing the moodboard as a result. Test shoots revealed issues with setting up the camera and time spent painting nails, so Photoshop was used to add nail polish digitally instead. While comfortable with Premiere Pro, outside help was needed for composition. Early edits in Movie Maker were refined in Photoshop with a posturized filter before the final edit. Though feedback was positive on use of colors and stop motion, the student is uncertain if conventions of a nail polish ad were fully followed given the choice of atypical soundtrack music.
1. Evaluation
Whilst the production side of my advertisement was quite time consuming, I really enjoyed
creating it.
I was slightly delayed in starting the assignment and went way over schedule in completing
it, so time management is something I definitely could definitely improve on. I had a pretty
clear idea of what my object of desire was going to be so researching into the codes and
conventions was quite a straight forwards task. I did not waste time trying to choose a
product.
I struggled a little with the ideas generation task since it always takes me a while to think up
any ideas. I produced a moodboard placing all my ideas onto one slide- If I could repeat the
task, I would have gone into a lot more detail. The inspiration behind my advertisement
came from a stop motion animation I saw online, however I failed to place this on the
moodboard. Time management was an issue for me again, since it took me so long to come
up with any ideas, I found that I was rushing the moodboard.
Fortunately I did a test run for my advertisement before starting the real thing. The whole
thing was test error- I spent the majority of the morning looking for the most appropriate
way to set up the camera that would make things simpler for me. I found that I was
spending a lot of time painting my nails which left me with little time to take the photos.
After a discussion with Harry it was decided that I would paint m nails in a bold colour and
add the nail colour in on Photoshop. Whilst this was a little more complicated it made the
process much quicker than it would have done.
Since I had some already had some prior knowledge on Premiere Pro, I did not struggle in
using the software. However I did need assistance in in setting up the right composition; this
is something I should learn to do for myself since it will be good for future reference.
I decided to do a rough edit of my advertisement in movie maker, just to get a feel of what it
would look like. After further consideration I decided I didn’t like the images as they and
wanted to add some sort of filter to them. After a little play around on Photoshop with the
assistance of Harry, I decided upon a posturized effect.
Whilst I believe I have met the assignment criteria and I’m happy with my final edit of the
advertisement, I’m not 100% certain it follows the typical codes and conventions of a usual
nail polish advertisement. The music I chose to use it ‘The Charleston’ by the Green Hill
Instrumental Band which is not a typical soundtrack to hear in a beauty product commercial.
2. The feedback I received was rather positive, with everyone liking the use of bright colours
and my decision to use stop motion. I think a positive side to my advert is that since al the
focus is on the hands, it’s obvious to the audience what the product is.
