The document describes a series of experiments conducted by Leon Boyce to develop elements for a magazine mock-up. 2. Font Practice.Here is a photo that I took when I was waiting in a queue, I
liked how the tree was in the center of the image and also
the large amount of space surrounding the tree. As a
practice I wanted to see what a header filling in that blank
space would look like, also because I have so many photos
in a similar style to this I thought it would’ve been good to
experiment and see what I could create with the photos. I
like the way font number 5 looks, I could replace the O
with a VW symbol. I also like the way number 4 looks and I
think it also fits the rough style of my car and also the
group I went to the shows with. I am leaning more towards
a rough looking font.

3. Font & photo practice.
I decided to try a different photo and look at how some more fonts would look against a brighter sky. I
really like the look of font number 1, the hanging font. But I don’t think it will suit the style of magazine I
am aiming for. The second font is similar to the style of font that the club uses, so I think for continuity I
could use the same font. The final font, number 3, is a bulkier thicker font which I think looks good but it
is slightly too thick for what I am looking for. Overall I like the way the photo looks because of the light
sky, the blue sky and blue car enforce continuity and also like how the way the painted rust van breaks
up to cleanness of the photo.

This experiment was something that I have
worked with in a previous rotation, I used
the skew tool to make the feature lines of
the magazine flow well and run in line with
the Zebra crossing, I decided to go with the
font for the mast head because it fits well
with style of cars that feature in my
magazine.

6. Experiment 4 reflection.
This was my experiment that I created to take a step
outside the box, I followed a text tutorial and it
didn’t go exactly as planned so I abandoned it and
moved onto my next experiment. My plan was to
follow this tutorial and then once I was finished
replace the wooden textures with some rust to fit
the theme of my magazine. I wanted to create this
3D experiment because I have never worked with
anything 3D on Photoshop, so anything I worked
with would be a learning curve and be beneficial to
me. I thought working with

9. Experiment 5 reflection.
I again followed another tutorial for this experiment and then took what I had
learnt and applied it onto another photo to put it into practical ways that I
would use in my magazine. I created the first rusty texture one by following a
step by step tutorial and using an overlay. I then moved onto adding this
effect to a wall and seeing how it would work. I thought about this in terms of
how I could use it on my magazine and decided I would like to try and see
how I can make the text look like it is embossed onto a car. I first practiced
with a wall and struggled with getting the perspective looking right on the
wall. But after playing around with it for a while I then moved to working this
effect onto a rusty van that I had taken a photo of. This was a very quick
experiment because I didn’t have the specific style of photo I wanted,
something that I could work into a cover photo. So I worked with what I had
and tried my hardest to create the style of cover I wanted, although I am
pleased with the results I didn’t quite get the perspective right. But because I
didn’t want to dwell and waste time, I moved onto another experiment and
documented my progress with this one.

15. Experiment 6 reflection.
In this experiment I started working on a magazine cover, experimenting with the way I can compose things around the
style of photo I would like to use on my front cover in my final piece. During the creation I realized I shouldn't spend all
my time creating a front cover so I began experimenting with different features that I would maybe want to include in
my final FMP.
At first I started creating a dotted line to outline some of the most important features on my front page, and this was
also a main feature later down the line because I used it to divide the magazine up into different sections.
My next step was adding in a small gradient at the top of the page. I did this to try and draw the viewers eyes in, along
side the dotted line I feel this will work well in guiding the viewers eyes around the front cover. So I kept the dotted
lines throughout the cover.
Up next was adding in the text, heading and sub title. I thought that using the same font throughout the whole cover
would be good and give it flow, but looking at the same font all the time has quite a toll on the eyes. So I swapped it up
and adding in a rusty text overlay and really like the way it looked. I will definitely use a similar technique in my final
FMP.
The next step was adding in the feature cars, but I was struggling to think of a technique to add in the car without
cutting out the background and placing it in, I wanted to save that for the main feature car. So I looked at a few
different covers and decided to create an eclipse with the cars filling the inside of the circles. I am really happy with this
technique because it saves me a lot of effort cutting out all the background of the photo.
I then decided I needed a main feature car so I added in my car and carefully cut the outside of the car out using the
pen tool. I then made a duplicate and changed the opacity and warped it to look like a shadow of the car. I feel with a
better photo this technique can be maximized to its full potential.
After looking at some more VW magazines, I noticed I was missing a big part of a magazine, which was my social media.
This step was simple but also worked really well, and just finished the look of the whole magazine.

This was just a quick test to see what I could
create using shapes and a font. I wanted to
create something similar to the Vans logo but I
couldn’t afford to buy the font so I created it my
self. I only made this font and didn’t test it
against anything, because I don’t think I
would've fitted into the style of my mock up
front cover. But the process of creating the logo
was a good learning experience.
