12/9/14 
 Today we looked at codes and conventions 
of genre and how to identify a genre through 
finding these conventions. 
 Today I learnt that Andrew Tudor created the 
genre theory of ‘the egg and chicken 
dilemma’. 
 I learnt which costumes, plotlines, music and 
settings all relate to what genre. 
 This will help me when it comes to planning 
and developing my movie opening as I have 
a clearer understanding of what is needed in 
a genre specific movie. 
 we also spoke about hybrid genres.
15/9/14 
Still image analysis 
 Today we learnt what camera angles 
are used and how they impact an image. 
 we looked at the Mise-en-scene of still 
images from The shining which we 
annotated and posted to our blogs. 
 After annotating theses pictures we was 
given the task of taking still images 
relating to a genre. 
 I was given thriller. 
 This task helped extend my use and 
knowledge of using cameras and taking 
images for use and annotation.
Essay 
16/9/14 
 today I wrote an essay based on the 
question of : 
‘Discuss the ways films openings draw in 
their audiences. 
 this essay was successful as it made me 
apply some of my knowledge to real 
movies and analyse why they have been 
used and their impact. 
 This task will help me with my final task as I 
have seen how movies of the similar genre 
to mine have been produced and 
conventions they have used and how they 
effect the mood and enigma.

18/9/14 
 today we learnt what theories there are to 
do with movies and the content. 
We learnt about Roland , Propps, Todorov, 
Claude Levi-Strauss. 
 I uploaded a PowerPoint of my knowledge 
onto my blog. 
 this task helped me with my movie opening 
research and planning as it has highlighted 
typical conventions and happenings which 
may be used to develop my movie such as 
the narrative patterns or the character 
styles.
Mind maps 
16/9/14 
 today I have used a new 2.0 software, 
bubbl.us, to develop my understanding of 
what movies use to make their opening fit 
the genre. 
 I have analysed two movies, insidious and 
Amityville horror. 
 this will help me with my movie opening 
production and planning as it is 
developing my knowledge of codes and 
conventions.

 today I have created an interactive story 
board on zooburst 
 I have created the first few shots of my 
opening 
 this has helped me develop my initial 
ideas and movie synopsis
institutions

 I have learnt about how the costing's of 
movies differ between low/high budget 
intuitions. 
 I have learnt high budget use more 
money in editing and actors where as low 
budget uses more money in promotion to 
get their movies seen 
 this will help me with my final piece as it 
would help me see how a low budget film 
can be made and excel to its full 
potential
Mood board 
24/9/14 
 I have made a mood board of all things 
horror related! 
 this has made he have a clearer 
understanding of the feelings and 
emotions in horror movies 
 this would help me in my final production 
if I was to make a horror as it gives 
imagery which could be used as stimuli

Character profile 
 today I have made character profile for 
my two main characters, 
antag/protagonists. 
 this will help me create my final movie 
opening as it has given some imagery 
and ideas towards character behaviour 
and their looks.

Production diary part 1

  • 1. Production diary Genre, still image, mood board and theories, mind maps,essay
  • 2. Genre 12/9/14  Today we looked at codes and conventions of genre and how to identify a genre through finding these conventions.  Today I learnt that Andrew Tudor created the genre theory of ‘the egg and chicken dilemma’.  I learnt which costumes, plotlines, music and settings all relate to what genre.  This will help me when it comes to planning and developing my movie opening as I have a clearer understanding of what is needed in a genre specific movie.  we also spoke about hybrid genres.
  • 3. 15/9/14 Still image analysis  Today we learnt what camera angles are used and how they impact an image.  we looked at the Mise-en-scene of still images from The shining which we annotated and posted to our blogs.  After annotating theses pictures we was given the task of taking still images relating to a genre.  I was given thriller.  This task helped extend my use and knowledge of using cameras and taking images for use and annotation.
  • 4. Essay 16/9/14  today I wrote an essay based on the question of : ‘Discuss the ways films openings draw in their audiences.  this essay was successful as it made me apply some of my knowledge to real movies and analyse why they have been used and their impact.  This task will help me with my final task as I have seen how movies of the similar genre to mine have been produced and conventions they have used and how they effect the mood and enigma.
  • 5. theories 18/9/14  today we learnt what theories there are to do with movies and the content. We learnt about Roland , Propps, Todorov, Claude Levi-Strauss.  I uploaded a PowerPoint of my knowledge onto my blog.  this task helped me with my movie opening research and planning as it has highlighted typical conventions and happenings which may be used to develop my movie such as the narrative patterns or the character styles.
  • 6. Mind maps 16/9/14  today I have used a new 2.0 software, bubbl.us, to develop my understanding of what movies use to make their opening fit the genre.  I have analysed two movies, insidious and Amityville horror.  this will help me with my movie opening production and planning as it is developing my knowledge of codes and conventions.
  • 7. Story board 19/9/14  today I have created an interactive story board on zooburst  I have created the first few shots of my opening  this has helped me develop my initial ideas and movie synopsis
  • 8. institutions 19/9/14  I have learnt about how the costing's of movies differ between low/high budget intuitions.  I have learnt high budget use more money in editing and actors where as low budget uses more money in promotion to get their movies seen  this will help me with my final piece as it would help me see how a low budget film can be made and excel to its full potential
  • 9. Mood board 24/9/14  I have made a mood board of all things horror related!  this has made he have a clearer understanding of the feelings and emotions in horror movies  this would help me in my final production if I was to make a horror as it gives imagery which could be used as stimuli
  • 10. 24/9/14 Character profile  today I have made character profile for my two main characters, antag/protagonists.  this will help me create my final movie opening as it has given some imagery and ideas towards character behaviour and their looks.
