1) The author researched the horror genre and subgenres to help decide what type of horror movie trailer they would create. They learned about common character archetypes, settings, and narratives in horror trailers. 2) Secondary research sources like Wikipedia, IMDb, and YouTube provided information faster and more comprehensively than primary research. However, the author also conducted a questionnaire to get opinions on movie genres. 3) The research uncovered conventions like family characters moving into a new home that gets disturbed by creatures or spirits. It also showed the importance of music in setting the mood and building tension in trailers. 4) In conclusion, the research helped the author understand what makes for a good horror trailer

1. Research Findings
In this essay I willexplain the benefits of my research into trailers and my
genre and how it has helped understand trailers better and in turn, this will
further my reach into knowing the codes and conventions of a trailer and will
result in helping me to producemy own movie trailer.
To start off, the first thing I did after I picked a genre I wanted to do which I did
Horror, Horror alwaysexcited me because I feel like when a movie with that
type of genre does it well, it can become a breath-taking experience that will
leave you on the edge of your seats but at the sametime being very
frightened. I then researched into different sub-genres thathorror has, this
then helped me decide what kind I was going to make and how to make it. This
all helped me add on to my knowledgeof the genre Horror and would be a
great assetto my film.
For the work I havedone, I have use secondary research to find out nearly all
of my information; I usewebsites such as Wikipedia, IMDb and YouTube. I
prefer to usesecondary research becausecompared to primary, it is faster,
vaster range of knowledge and it is all up to date but I will be using one
method of primary research when I usea questionnaireto find out people’s
opinions of various moviegenres and what they think about them.
All of this work was then stored on our online blog whereit can be viewed
there by classmates and our teacher for marking. We then put thoseinto
categories to make them easier to find on the blog.
During this period or research of various aspects of trailers, many different
subjects werelearnt, like characters, narrative, setting and music and sound
which could help me find out what is good and bad abouttrailers, and also it
helped reviewing multiple trailers to get an Idea of the similarities between
them.
When researching characters, therewas a very similar pattern in how they
would be based out, there would the same few variations justput into
different settings. The mostamount of characters that werethe same were
usually a family consisting of a lead role of the mother along with the father
and normally two kids would be presentin the film, this would normally be the

more frequent as horror movies are released. Another type of character line
up would be when they would have a lead female character that would be very
vulnerable during the firstbits of the movie but as other characters where
killed off it would become quite apparent sheis the lead role and would
become one of the last alive. This is a frequentoccurrencethat happens in very
big movies that are known by the public today.
The setting of these horror movies would also be very similar, being that they
would always be in a big house, mostlikely justmoving in, this would tie in
with the family characters who would be a perfect fit for this kind of setting in
a movie like this and a film which does this well is ParanormalActivity.
These two aspects would combine to make a simple yet effective narrative,
consisting of a family moving into a quiet area or even a desolate place to live
together which would set up the equilibrium of the trailer and then be
disturbed by a creature or spirit.
This information will help me make my trailer because now I know the aspects
of a generic horror trailer, the good and the bad points which I can now change
because I havethe ability to plan ahead and stop these negatives from
effecting my own trailers.
Music and sound I found out is also very important in horror trailers becauseit
is mostly the music which sets the mood for the trailer, whereit will be used to
build up the trailer leading up to the climax at the end, faced paced scenes us
scary fastmusic, and slower paced or normal scenes would use a creepy song
to put the viewers on edge and make it easier for them to be scared by
something in the trailer.
Although I mostly used secondary research, I did do a questionnairewhich is
primary; this is where I had a series of questions which I asked people about
trailers, like whatis your favouritegenre from a multiple choice answer. This
was very helpful to me becauseit helped me get a good understanding of what
a modern day teen would like to see in a trailer and whatkind of genres they
would prefer, this helped me lots because I can now know whatthey wouldn’t
like to see as well.

3. To conclude, all of this research will help me to male my final productthe best
it can be and avoid various issues that I would not have seen without doing this
work, this has also told me whatthe best things to put in a trailer and what
people would like to see rather then something viewers would dislike.
