This document discusses how the filmmakers targeted their audience of 15-25 year olds for their horror-thriller movie. They conducted research that found horror was the most popular genre. They included young lead characters and a suburban setting to increase identification. Feedback led them to add 20 seconds introducing a new protagonist to provide more narrative structure. They also had their target audience choose the film title "One by One" over alternatives like "Dismemberment".
Do you spend hours struggling to manually produce the reports management demands? Are you working with disparate islands of outdated data? And, after all that hard work, are the reports produced inaccurate and untrustworthy?
One of the easiest ways to improve the quality of information that you are able to provide is by simply sourcing good data. This presentation will show you the best practices for sourcing data to ensure that it is trusted, credible and reliable.
2. Establishing what our audience wanted
Within our research and planning we thought it would be appropriate to ask our target audience
what type of genre they liked the most. I and my group asked 30 individuals within our target
audience (ages 15-25, both male and females) what their favourite genre was. As you will be
able to see from the results, the genre ‘horror’ was the most popular for our audience. This is
what influenced us to make a horror-thriller movie. The results are as following:
3. Attracting the audience
Within my opening sequence I have used both male and females as the characters. The actors are aged roughly 17
which fits perfectly with out target audience as they are around the same age (15-25). Because of this, the audience
are able to identify and connect easily with the characters. This has a bigger impact on the audience as they feel as
though it is them or someone from their social group in the situation.
The opening is a faced paced, horror-thriller which targets are audience perfectly. When carrying out research as to
what the audience’s favourite genre is we found it to be horror and I believe that all the aspects within our opening
portray the horror genre very well. This meaning we are creating exactly what our audience want to see.
We have deliberately used a natural setting of a sub-urban area to try and allow the audience to identify with the
opening sequence. This is because our target audience are individuals who live in suburban areas. This may make the
audience feel as though they can imagine being in the situation.
The characters are also dressed in everyday clothes (such as a leather jacket and black jeans) as this is commonly
worn within the population –it may make the audience feel as though they're the same with as the characters, they
can identify.
Our opening sequence conforms well to the restrictions of a ‘15’ certificate rating. This is roughly the same certificate
rating seen on most horror movies of our type. I allows us to use the iconography of horror such as blood and
weapons which are effective for the audience as apposed to being restricted as to what we could include if we were a
lower certificate rating e.g 12.
4. Improvements made during the
construction
Once we had completed our first draft of our opening sequence we
showed it to members of our target audience and asked for their feed
back. When receiving feedback we found that our target audience felt as
though there was something missing in the opening that structured the
opening i.e. the audience were confused as to what was happening/where
the narrative was heading. The feedback showed that most of the
audience thought this. As a result, I and my group decided it would be
appropriate to add an extra 20 seconds of footage to the end of our
sequence. This extra 20 seconds included the introduction of a new
protagonist (Katie) within the opening. It included Katie finding the body of
the young girl on the floor and also had a police operator sound and Katie
speaking over the footage playing as Katie's picture was being burned by
an unidentified source. The audience is able to see that Katie is now the
new target of the killer. We believed this added depth to the narrative, the
audience were kept on the edge of their seat which entices them to watch
on further.
5. Film titles
When we finished filming our opening sequence
we had to start thinking of titles. We again
turned to our target audience in order to make
a decision. We used another questionnaire in
order to find out what film title they believed
fitted the opening best. When we first thought
of these titles I and my group very keen on using
the title ‘dismemberment’ but as you can see
this title only ranked second. We decided to go
with ‘One by One’ as this was the title our
audience thought was the most fitting.
