The document discusses film production and distribution. It explains that distribution is the process of making movies available to audiences and involves marketing and publicity. Successful distribution relies on word-of-mouth after a cinema release to boost DVD sales. Major film distribution companies are listed, including Paramount, Warner Bros., Disney, and 20th Century Fox. Marketing is described as equally important to filmmaking and can cost up to 50% of a film's budget. 20th Century Fox is highlighted for successes like Avatar and influencing genres with films like Star Wars and Die Hard. Paramount Pictures is the oldest surviving American studio and was the first to distribute films digitally only.
2. Distribution
Film distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by
an audience. To be financially successful, a film has to be marketed, positioned and
publicised for their target audience. The success of a cinema release will rely on
word-of-mouth to secure DVD sales. The distributors will use target audience
statistics and test screenings to do this.
Examples of film distribution companies:
• Paramount
• Warner
• Disney
• Twentieth Century Fox
• Universal
• Working Title
• Miramax
• Film 4
3. Film Marketing
Distributors have to plan their Marketing very carefully as Film Marketing
is as important as the making of a film. They have to create a Marketing
campaign that presents their film as ‘unmissable’ and it can cost as much
as the making of the film. On average, the cost of marketing a film can be
anywhere up to 50% of a film’s budget which includes things such as
trailers, merchandise, premiers, advertising on social media and the
internet, promotions and posters.
4. 20th Century Fox
This distribution and production company had been founded 1904 as only a minor
organisation, however, in 100 years the company developed significantly. This is
down to progression of the company and also technological advances that have
helped this film company gain. They have had many achievements as a company,
they have produced the film Avatar which is the highest grossing picture of all time,
whose use of motion capture reimagined 3-D are regarded as modern technological
advances that helped this film produce with such a positive outcome as an action
thriller film. Fox also influenced thriller sub genres by showing the world a new vision
of science fiction thriller with Star Wars and also contributed to action thrillers with
the Die Hard Series that revolutionised and made a difference to the
accomplishment of action thrillers. Overall, 20th century fox have produced and
distributed many popular thriller movies that have altogether, influenced the thriller
genre positively. In conclusion, 20th century fox still to this day remains embracing
new technologies that will take audiences deeper into thriller films, they also aim to
currently produce more and more films that will benefit all the companies involved,
eventually resulting in successful movies that have gained a lot of box office revenue.
5. Paramount Pictures
Paramount pictures is a film studio, television production company and
motion picture distributor founded in 1912, being America’s oldest
running studio also being the fifth oldest surviving film studio in the
world. In 2014, Paramount Pictures became the first major Hollywood
studio to distribute all of its films in digital-form only. I looked into the
thriller film ‘Shutter Island’ which is produced and distributed by this
company.
