The Four Families of the Filovirus Ebola
The filovirus Ebola consists of 4 families: Marburg, Ebola Zaire, Ebola Sudan, and Ebola Reston.
It is a rather simple virus in structure; each contain a single strand RNA strand and 7 different
proteins, 3 which are only slightly understood and 4 that are completely unknown. The virus harms
the immune system like the HIV virus, but Ebolacauses an explosive attack. The virus is
associated with the measles and mumps family, pneumonia viruses, parainfluenza viruses which
include colds, and respiratory system related viruses. Unlike common viruses which are ball
shaped, Ebola s shape represents that similar to a shepherd s crook, a long snake like thread that
looks like a worm. Because the Ebola virus has a distinct structure, it has been classified as a
thread virus in its own family of viruses, the filoviruses.

Marburg (1st discovered)
She originated from an African organism but received a German name. First identified in an old
city of central Germany in 1967, Marburg devastated the town, killing 1 out of 4 victims and
causing effects that resembled rabies. Scientists analyzed the virus structure and found strands and
strands of tangled rope, some wrapped in looks similar to donuts. In this way, for some time,
Marburg was called stretched rabies, its worm like shapes stretched out unlike the rabies virus
which is bullet shaped.
Effects
Marburg attacks human tissue like nuclear radiation, damaging the nervous system and especially
the brain. Victims

Essay on Evolution Embedded in Symbols
Evolution Embedded in Symbols
Two billion years ago two prokaryotes bumped into each other and formed the first multi cellular
organism. 65 million years ago an asteroid hit the earth and dinosaurs became extinct. Three days
ago, in your notebook you drew a mess of squiggles which to you represented Jackson Pollock s
painting, Number 1, 1948. You wrote the word entropy on the upper left handcorner of the page. On
the bottom right hand side you wrote, Creativity is based on randomness and chance.
This paper is, in part, an exploration of the pictures and words that we place in notebooks; it is an
investigation of the human fixation with the creation of symbols via art and writing. But is also
about how the symbols drawn in one s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her book, On Beauty and Being Just, Elaine Scarry states that beauty incites replication (4). Like
a history of evolution, a history of human symbolic representation is heavily dependent on the act of
reproduction. This reproduction has manifested itself quite literally. For example, when a painter
finds something in nature to be beautiful, she can reproduce it on the canvas and when a writer
finds a moment to be inspiring, she can transcribe the moment into a set of instructions [i.e. words]
about how [a reader] can imagine or construct [that moment] (Dreaming by the Book, Scarry, 6).
Like sexual reproduction which allows organisms to share their genetic material in order to
continue species and to create new organisms, pictures and words help with a lateral transfer of
cultural information, its continuance and recombination. To create a symbol of something with a
string of words or with an art material is to perpetuate that which is beautiful for future generations.
According to Dennett, before there were words, there were no word meanings, even if there were
other sorts of meanings. (402) Dennett s hypothesis reminds us, at the most basic level that symbols
mean something. To say that there are only a couple of meanings behind all artwork and writing
would be to deny the complexity of the human symbol making and

Even though most prisons are very secure, they are nowhere near how secure Alcatraz was when
it was open. Alcatraz was a strict, high security federal prison that s located on Alcatraz Island, in
San Francisco Bay, California. While Alcatraz was open escapee Frank Lee Morris was one of the
very few who had attempted to escape and he supposedly made it out alive.
Alcatraz was the most secure prison on the planet. The walls, ceiling, and floor were made of
concrete, and the prison gates were made of some of the strongest steel available. The island was
given the nickname The Rock because of all the structures were made out of concrete. The island

Some people who have made it out of the prison have tried to swim in the bay, but since they
were accustomed to warm waters they either died of hypothermia or drowned. If a prisoner was
found escaping, they usually were put in the hole, which is a cell that has a solid door to block
off all light. The cells in the hole have no bed, no blankets, no AC which made it cold. Prisoners
were not allowed to wear clothes except for boxer shorts. A day in the life of a prisoner at
Alcatraz is pretty tough. At 6:30 AM the prisoners woke up and tidied up their cells. At 6:45
they went to the mess hall to eat breakfast. Then around 7:25 guards took the inmates to their
jobs such as, gardening, tailoring, and laundry. They worked until 11:40 which is when the
inmates had dinner, the same way as breakfast. After dinner they went back to work and had a
break after two hours, then they returned to their cells at 4:45. The final lockup was at 4:50 and
lights out at 9:30. A total of 13 official counts was made every 24 hours to make sure that all
prisoners were accounted for. While the prison was open, there were only 36 inmates who tried
to escape, and two of the 36 tried to escape twice, It s mighty good to get up and leave. This rock

Concentration Camp Research Paper
Bella Gonzalez Dina Hanna Daily Life in The Camps Life in a concentration camp was truly
horrific, as many are already aware. But we tend to overlook the small details about the daily
lives of prisoners that make the whole situation so much worse. The moment prisoners arrived at
a concentration camp, they were stripped of their names and possessions. They were all given a
number, which was usually tattooed on their wrists with sharp metal stamps . After this, their
heads were shaved, and prisoners were told that this was to prevent lice. Prisoners then received
a black and white striped uniform, with an identification emblem sewn on to the upper left side
of their shirts and jackets. These badges were colored inverted triangles, used to let officers
know what offense the prisoners were placed in the camp for. Immigrants triangles were blue,
criminals were green, homosexuals were pink, political prisoners were red, gypsies were brown,
and Jehovah s Witnesses were purple. Jewish people had to wear a yellow Star of David instead
of an identification triangle, but if they were charged on more than one offense, they would be
made to wear a yellow triangle with a colored inverted triangle on top of it, forming the Star of
David, but also showing the other offense through the color coded... Show more content on

Rations were cut nearly in half, and because prisoners were forced to labor most of the day, they
died of hunger. Nazis also used death marches . They literally took prisoners out in rough
conditions and made them march for hours for the sole purpose of wiping them out. However,
the most commonly used method of extermination was a gas chamber. Prisoners were locked in
a room, and a guard dropped some Zyklon B pellets in with them. They died after due to the

Thomas Hart Benton s Impact On The Regionalist Movement Art
Thomas Hart Benton was a muralist and an American painter. He had focus on the Regionalist
movement art along with Grant and John Curry. Thomas Benton has had a great impact on the
color, the resonant ideas and exuberance. Benton identified different diverse ideas of contradiction:
the rituals and the urban, freedom, oppression, the poor, rich labor and entertainment (Marling,
1982). As Muraldeveloped the ideas, he span two epochs on the excess of Jazz Age and bitter side
of depression in the country. This was expressed in the art work that he presented in the
Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The painting was done 1930 to 1931 which was paced on the New School board room from social
research in the city of New York. This painting attracted attention and was bought by Equitable Life
then later to Metropolitan Museum as an exhibit. Benton developed 10 panels of which a lot of
them were 7.5 feet in height and 9 feet in width. The painting was in egg tempera having an oil
glaze, strong attractive colors, wide modulation and a very much gleaming surfaces (Benton, 1983).
The painting had an aluminum frame, with complexity in mounding and curves in the right angles
that showed the vignettes in the panel and addition of emphatic strength (Dennis,1998). The
paining showed changes in activities in the production of corn that was juxtaposed with clearing of
the land for the activities. The clearing utilized a saw with lance teeth. Like the doubled edged

The Effects Of Classroom Talk On The Classroom
In teaching, a large proportion of time is spent in talking and listening. As the major factor in a
classroom it should become the main process by which a pupil learns. After all it is the primary
method that humans use to communicate. It leads me to ask how important is it? And does what
is talked about in lessons equate to the quality of learning that is happening in the classroom. On
the basis of these questions, Daniels (2001 cited in Alexander, 2004:8) argues that classroom talk
not only mediates teaching and learning but the wider culture. Alexander (2004:9) also indicates
that talk is necessary for the building of the brain itself as a physical organism and thereby
expanding its power .
Because talking is not recorded in a book unlike writing, teachers may tend to be less reflective on
what is said rather than what is written. For instance, Alexander (2004:6) points out that it is
always written work that is regarded as real school work and as the most reliable medium for
measuring pupil s learning . Barnes (1992:124) also implies that learning is not simply adding bits
of information to the previous knowledge. Rather, most important learning is a matter of working
on understanding , which can be achieved through talk (ibid).
In an effort to reveal the importance of classroom talk in student learning and their interrelation, I
aim to discuss whether student learning is closely linked to the quality of classroom talk through
the foundation subjects of science

Cost Effectiveness Of The Surgical Treatments For Tn
Several studies have compared the cost effectiveness of the surgical treatments for TN. Both
Holland et al(57) and Pollock et al(5) conducted small studies in which they found that MVD
produced a higher number of quality adjusted pain free years and was more cost effective than
SRS. In Holland s study, while radiofrequency rhizotomy was found to be the most cost effective
treatment, 74% of patients experienced a recurrence in pain. Sivakanthan et al(24) found that
MVD produced a QALY gain of 8.2 at 5 year follow up while SRS was 4.9 QALYs gained. With
MVD at 6.0 and SRS at 5.4, our study demonstrated a smaller discrepancy in QALYs gained than
Sivakanthan. However, Sivakanthan s study only used one article each to calculate the QALYs for...

These studies suggest that the durability of pain relief with MVD greatly influences patient
satisfaction with the procedure. However, they used a small number of patients, and adequate
literature on patient satisfaction is lacking. Our results must be interpreted with caution. The model
makes several simplifying assumptions, any of which can impact our results. Our data arise from a
series of indirect, nonrandomized comparisons, within which there is clinical heterogeneity. The
studies analyzed varied with respect to patient selection, baseline severity of pain, treatment
assignment, outcome parameters measured and time of follow up. The use of a random effects
model partially compensates for heterogeneity but cannot completely correct for it. For example,
the majority of TN studies fail to record the preoperative level of pain, preventing a comparison
between the two(16). While there are clinical pain scales to correct this problem, they were not
used in our analysis(59, 60). Our reliance on trial level data rather than individual patient
information may also introduce aggregation bias.
In addition to Monte Carlo simulations, we ran sensitivity analyses in which we systematically
varied values of each major variable. None had significant impact on our results except when varied
to extreme values. We cannot rule age out as an independent predictor of outcome in MVD,
suggesting SRS may be the more effective treatment in the elderly. There

Descriptive Essay About Summer Vacation
In February during spring break, my Dad, nicknamed Moose, arranges a trip to stay on Seagull
Lake. This is not like your ordinary trip; this is winter camping in the Boundary Waters, which
requires hard work, the willingness to help out at all times, and a lot of preparation. This trip
consists of cross country skiing, pulling 300 lbs on a sled across a long frozen lake, sleeping in
tents in weather that is 20 degrees below zero, and portaging 2 miles to get the chance to fish on a
secret fishinglake. The people that go on this 5 day tripevery year are Moose, my second cousin
Paul Gerten and his dog, my uncle Danny, their friend Sterling Black, and I, although Danny had
knee issues for a while which didn t allow him to come this trip. The year was 2016, and Sterling
decided to bring his nephew named Birkley, whose mother had just passed away. Also, Moose
brought along his work friend Brett Strand from Lifetime Fitness.
We start our trip by driving up to my cabin in Silver Bay, Minnesota. The first night is a Thursday
night without the old men s wives, so we go to a bar called the the Green Door where the men
drink a bunch of beers and watch the wild game. Birkley and I of course only drink Coca Cola.
Being the one out of the group that is too young to drink alcohol, and also the kid that can drive,
I have to sober cab for the men. When we get back to the cabin, many games of cribbage are

The main character is Esperanza Ortega from the book Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan.
Esperanza was a wealthy land owners daughter who lived in Mexico. Her family had to move to
America because of her Papa s death. They had to become a servant herself instead of having
servants. Although Esperanza faced many challenges as an immigrant, her hardest ones were
when Esperanza did not know how to do daily chores because she had always had servants and that
the dust storms caused Mama to become sick with Valley Fever. My first challenge is about when
Esperanza could not do daily chores because she had always had servants. On page 118, Miguel

or pull it toward you like this. Here you try.ВЁ Miguel is showing Esperanza how to hold a broom

In addition, researchers examine the correlation of family history of suicide and/or suicide attempt
versus a family history of mental illness. Results to show adolescents with a family history hold a
higher risk of suicide, but mental illness remains an independent risk factor associated with suicide.
Understanding family history and mental illness proves vital with guiding and assisting adolescents
who attempt suicide, as well as realizing that adolescents need supportive and meaningful
relationships. Lack of support in close relationships identities as one if the major risk factors
associated with adolescents who attempt suicide. During adolescence, individuals need guidance
from friends, teachers, parents/ guardians, and/or school counselors to grow, reflect, confide, etc.
Through an interview process, Latakiene Skruibis, discover that all three participants who
attempted suicide lost a close relationship and felt alone. Researchers evidence suggests involving
and strengthening adolescent s relationship reduces the risk of suicide. As a result, knowing the risk
factors associated with adolescents who attempt suicide aids adolescents in the healing process. In
addition to knowing the risk factors associated with suicide, understanding coping skills, or lack
thereof, in adolescents who attempt suicide provides educators, adolescents, and families valuable
information. Coping Skills Unfortunately, adolescents who attempt suicide lack positive

I am black of an African American decent. I am Chinese of a Korean decent. I am white, I am
Canadian. These statements are common examples of how many people view their race and
identity. Similar to the statements made in the novels, Obasan by Joy Kogawa and More by Austin
Clarke. Both novels illustrate people as attaching an individual s identity through their race, colour
and ethnicity. Naomi Nah Cane characterized in Obasan, is born in Canada but is looked upon

back and raises a voice rather than Naomi who is more silent in such discriminations. Naomi was
born in Vancouver; British Colombia but always is categorized as a Japanese woman and never
accepted as a Canadian because of her physical characteristics and the past history of the war. Due
to the war in 1942 caused by the attack on Pearl Harbour by the Japanese and some British
territories, the Canadians restricted and alienated the Japanese from all of their activities; they
seized their homes and property without any compensation, evacuated the Japanese from coastal

Industrialization Vs Income Cap Essay
As a requirement of the winter semester Macroeconomics curriculum, the students were to present
an argument and debate over its ethicality. As the class was split among three different topics;
industrialization vs. the environment, inexpensive labor abroad (sweatshops), and income caps (on
celebrities). The debates were split among three class days. The first day belonged to the
industrialization debaters, the second day belonged to the inexpensive labor abroad (sweatshop)
debaters, and, lastly, the third day belonged to the income cap debaters. I was fortunate enough to
witness the inexpensive labor abroad and income cap debate on the following days after the
industrialization debate.
In any learning area it is only but expected to be informed about situations and problems around

competition within our economy, people would start to feel as if they don t have to work as hard

Each individual has the need and desire to excel in life and reach clearly outline goals. Even if

since she graduated, Babbitts student loan balance has more than doubled, to $87,000, and she

Knee Joint Essay
The knee joint is the largest and most complex in the human body. Being able to understand the
anatomy of the knee joint is a key factor in being able to identify the issues with the knee.
People all ages often suffer from knee pain. Due to the amount of things that can go wrong, by
understanding how the knee works, one can prevent new injuries and solve old injuries.
The knee is made up of two joints, the tibiofemoral and the patellofemoral. The tibiofemoral joint is
composed of the thigh and shin bones. The patellofemoral joint forms the kneecap. This type of
joint is called a hinge joint. This type of joint can bend, straighten and twist.
The knee is also a synovial joint. This means that the knee joint has a joint capsule. This is similar
to a sac surround the joint. This capsule hold synovial fluid. The fluid lubricates and nourishes the
joint which allows it to move freely. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The majority of knee movements occur between the femur, patella, and tibia.
Covering the bones is the articular cartilage. It is a hard and slippery substance that allows the
knee glide smoothly and to reduce friction as the knee is moved.
Between the femur and tibia is where one would find the meniscus. There are two menisci in the
knee; one medially and one laterally. The meniscus serves as a shock absorber of the knee. It is in
a wedge shape and is made of a tough, rubbery substance.
The knee also contains a series of tendons. The quadricep tendons connect the patella to the muscles
on the front of the femur. The patellar tendons connect the patella to the tibia. In addition, there are
also the hamstrings on the back side of the thigh. These muscles play a key role in stabilizing and

A Summary Of The Bell Jar
1.List the major topics/issues Sylvia Plath explores in The Bell Jar (at least four). To what
extent are the issues still relevant today? The major topics explored in The Bell Jar include the
inferiority of women, the wrongful treatment of the mentally ill, sexuality and the double
standard for men and women on sex, and conformity to society s expectations. The inferiority of
women refers to society s view that women are subordinate to men, and are supposed to serve
men after marriage, become housewives, and bear babies. This perception of women in today s
society has largely declined, due to the constant call for gender equality. While there still exist the
suppression and discrimination of women, the proponents of which are heavily condemned. The
wrongful treatment of the mentally ill at the time includes the overall perception that mentally ill
is a choice not a serious disease, the condemnation and alienation resulting from that perception,
and the doctors indifferent, sometimes inhumane attitude toward the mentally ill, which includes
electro shock and solitary confinement. With great advancements in the medical field on mental
conditions and an increase in people with mental disease, today people are generally
sympathetic toward the mentally ill, who are treated appropriately by the doctors. Plath also
highlights the issue of the double standards for men and women on sex, where men can pursue
sexual intercourses freely, but women are supposed to keep chastity until marriage. Esther is
troubled by this double standard throughout the novel, regarding sex as how a man controls a
woman, and that she would only become free and own her body after she does a fitting for birth
control, and loses virginity to Irwin, whom she will never see again. This issue has become
relatively irrelevant today, as premarital sex is not considered a moral issue anymore. In the novel,
Esther constantly struggles between being herself and conforming to society s expectations. In
Esther s case, the society expects her to become a housewife and stop pursuing her passion once
she is married. Confronting against society s expectations, Esther feels at times hopeless and
disillusioned. This issue is still relevant today,

Supply Chain Management And Logistics Essay
Supply Chain management and logistics are an extremely important functions of an organization.
In this research paper, we will be discussing an aspect of supply chain and logistics that I am
interested in, how both are related and different, key activities in supply chain and logistics, and the
ethics and social responsibility in both supply chain and logisticsmanagement.
Logistics is a vital component of supply chain management. Both involve the planning, carrying out
and management of goods, services and information from the point of origin to the point of
consumption. Logistics aligns the multifaceted pattern of traffic and transportation, shipping and
receiving, import and export operations, warehousing, inventory management, purchasing,
production planning and customer service. Organizations, like the one I work for, see logistics as a
critical design of the supply chain. When organizations incorporate logistics as a key component of
the business plan, they can use it to manage, coordinate and monitor resources needed to move
products in a smooth, timely, cost effective and reliable manner.
Like Logistics, Supply Chain Management is an essential element of operational efficiency. The
impact that supply chain has on our organization is substantial and exponential. Two of the main
ways SCM affects business include: boosts customer service and our overall bottom line. Supply
chain impacts our customer service by making sure the right product assortment and quantity are

It affects about 80% of people s daily lives. From being the greatest at videogames or the funniest
person on YouTube they have all consumed you and also how you live in your daily life. Our
generation of teenagers/young adults are becoming more and more lazy and dependent on
technology so there is no telling how much more lazy the next generation will be. I think
technology has made our generation of teens more ignorant, greedy, and lazy. As my parents
always say well when I was a kid we didn t have all those little fancy cell phones, televisions with
1000 channels or high tech computers back then all we had was a bike, ball, and our
imagination. And I ll just roll my eyes even though I know for a fact that each generation is just
fading more and more and depending on technology way too much. I wouldn t be surprised if
soon, people made chairs that will hover around to get a drink from the fridge or to take you to
and from the rooms in the house so they don t have to get up and walk to do simple tasks.
Technology is taking over our world and no one is realizing this. Computers and cell phones are
good tools for everyone to use, but it doesn t need to be used for every little thing. Technology
can be useful it many ways like curing cancer or school work. It should be used is as a tool or for
helpful reasons, and should not be used for laziness or ignorance. Overall technology has a huge
impact on our lives and the lives of our future

Rich Brother
Pete: Loyal to a Fault The Rich Brother, by Tobias Wolff is the story of two brothers that from
all accounts couldn t be more different. Pete, the elder brother, is the epitome of the American
Dream. He has worked hard and become an entrepreneur, has a wife and kids, and even brags
about an ocean view from his home. Donald is completely opposite. He is for the most part
unemployed, and although he is a spiritual person, he has been unable to find the right fit for his
spirituality and bounced from religion to religion. The Rich Brother, begins at the end of Donald s
most recent search for spirituality when he must call his brother, Pete, knowing that Pete cannot
deny his brother s need for help yet again, and asks to be picked... Show more content on

Go on take it! (615). These are perhaps words parents might use with their college age child to
ensure their child has enough to get them through a tough time, maybe a week during school
exams or something. A parent knows that the money is not going to be paid back, just as Pete
knows Donald will never pay the money back to him. This situation reinforces the idea that Pete
enables Donald to take advantage of him. Just as history repeats itself, so does the cycle that is
Pete and Donald. Donald once again takes advantage of his brother s loyalty when on the drive
home from the farm the brothers pick up Webster, a hitchhiker and conman. Webster spins a tale
too good to be true but Donald can t see anything other than dollar signs when Webster offers him
a share in his gold mine in Peru. Pete, as most adults would have, can see the scam through
Webster s tale immediately and tries to help Donald see the truth by offering up multiple snarky
comments and direct questions for Webster to answer. It s just not enough though as Donald
gives away Pete s $100 to Webster in good faith for a share in the mine. This is a much larger
issue than the fact that Donald just gave away Pete s money and feels justified and blameless.
The other issue is Pete s past experience should have taught Pete that Donald is incapable of
understanding the value of other people s money or material items, which is part of the reason he
was asked to leave the farm.

Epic Hero Changes
Maya Angelou once said, I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place
for all people. This may be true for modern times, but texts throughout the ages prove the
characteristics and morals of heros have changed over the years. While reading British Literature,
one becomes familiar with four main categories of heroes: the Epic Hero, the Romantic Hero, the
Tragic Hero, the Postmodern Hero.
An Epic Hero is the first hero in British Literature. The most important task of an Epic hero is to
seek out fame and glory. They will shed their own blood, kill anyone in their way, and complete
seemingly impossible tasks to earn honor from others. Another characteristic is their ability to boast
about themselves. An Epic Hero ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before. Most heroes are super strong and courageous. They face problems that one in modern
times would not face, like fighting for a throne or killing another for a woman s love. A
Postmodern Hero is not like that. They are not always courageous and normally their tasks and
problems are the same a one s own. A reader can now see themselves much easier in the
Postmodern Hero. This iconic style of hero can be found in Grendel by Gardner. In this story
Grendel, the monster, has some monster like characteristics and some human like
characteristics. He attempts to answer the question that many people are trying to solve to. This
is Who am I and where do I fit in? In this way Grendel relates to the reader. Also, he is in search for
love from his mother and tries to fill that void in her heart. All she knows how to do is hug him.
She is incapable of communicating with him. In this way Grendel s problems can also be
related to by the reader. Those in this time period seem to be more open to flaws. This society
realizes that everyone makes mistakes and not all heros are perfect. It is okay to be scared to do
something brave. It is okay to not look like others around you and it is okay to

Social Psychological Barriers Of Violence On Youth And...
Youth in today s society are faced with numerous social psychological barriers that get in the way
of healthy development. Urban youth are faced with even more of these barriers such as
homelessness, mental health issues, negative influences, poverty, racism, stereotypes and exposure
to violence. Table 1 addresses these social psychological barriers, defines them and provides
sources from current journal articles that speak about them. Many of these barriers do not happen
in isolation alone, but are connected and intertwine. For instance students living in poverty often
have to deal with homelessness and students faced with racism often come face to face with
stereotypes in their culture. This paper will examine in depth the social psychological barrier of
violenceand analyze how it impacts students performance and achievement. Exposure to violence
(from hearing about to witnessing or even being victimized by) can be very traumatic for children
and youthand affect brain development leading to lasting effects that can continue well into
adulthood. Students living in urban neighborhoods are often exposed to more violent crime, murder,
stabbings, shootings, rape, robbery, and assaults than students living in suburban or rural
neighborhoods. Studies show that over 85% of urban youth report witnessing some form of
community violence in their lifetime and almost 70% report direct victimization (McDonald,

The Experience Machine Summary
In The Experience Machine by Robert Nozick tells a story about a future event that has taken
place in the world. During this event, humans are plugged into these machines that allow them
to choose any pleasurable acts for duration of two years, and then at the end of the two years,
they are allowed to choose more acts that would make them happy. Nozick gives objections to
the theory that happiness is the only thing desirable for its own sake by arguing that being aware
of reality is vital for it allows the person to actually live their life and not live life as an unknown
being. When Nozick claims that Plugging into the machine is a kind of suicide, he argues that one

For example, happiness is subjective and at times. According to Dan Haybron, Even as
happiness might fail to suffice for well being, well being itself may be only one component of a
good life, and not the most important one at that. Here good life means a life that is good all
things considered, taking account of all the values that matter in life, whether they benefit the
individual or not (Haybron). Perhaps a person has to consider morality before their own
happiness, but at the end of their life, they had a good life. An example of an act that a person
has to consider morality before their own happiness is the matter of divorce. They may have
children, and children are greatly impacted when their parents divorce. The person who wants the
divorce cannot consider just their own unhappiness and leave their family, but has to find a
different way to be happy with their own life. Self biased happiness is not a good reason to plug
into the machine. Hedonist may have an objection that plugging into the machine would be
suicidal. According to Matthew Silverstein about the term hedonism, The term itself is derived
from the Greek word Е‰ОґРѕvО® (hД“donД“), meaning pleasure, and theories are hedonistic in
virtue of the central role they assign to the notion of pleasure (Silverstein, 1). Pleasure is the key
word for defining hedonism and it focuses on self indulgence. Pleasure may be hedonist s main

N. Scott Momaday s The Way To Rainy Mountain
When reading, The Way to Rainy Mountain I found out one of the most prolific American Indian
writers of the 20th century was N. Scott Momaday, and he grew up on many different Indian
reservations in southwest American. He first lived with his grandparents on the Kiowa reservation.
Then N. Scott Momaday moved to Arizona where his parents were teachers on Indian reservations.
This exposed Momaday to the traditions of his Kiowaancestry, as well as the traditions of other
tribes, such as the Apache, Pueblo, and Navajo.
As I was reading on I found that N. Scott Momaday went to college and earning a degree in
political science from the University of New Mexico, N. Scott Momaday gravitated toward
literature, eventually earning a doctorate in English literature from the University of California at
Santa Barbara. I found that alongside N. Scott Momaday he pursued creative scholarly writing,
Momaday pursued creative writing, and he won the Pulitzer Prize for his first novel, House Made

Comparison In Society In Fahrenheit 451 And Today s Society
Comparison in societies in Fahrenheit 451 and today s society Fahrenheit 451 has a great deal of
government control, technology that is advanced it is injurious to the society and the people
there, and that censorship has been a terrible thing for the people. Ray Bradbury s Fahrenheit 451
reveals how the society, which is a dystopiacan be detrimental with more government control, and
how censorship blinds the people in the society, and how technology gets to advanced it can be a
inimical thing and how it has been shown or not shown in today s society.
Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopia that has too much government control, technology that is used to
blind the people in the society so that nobody questions anything about what is going wrong in it.
Also, the technology is advanced by a metallic hound that hunts and captures criminals. He also
manages to incinerate the Mechanical Hound, but not before he is injured by it. . This one
example of how the advanced technology is harming the society. The Hounds are programmed to
capture or kill people who are caught violating this law. They also deceive people with fancy new
technology, such as giant TVs that are installed into the wall it keeps them from questioning or
think about their life and everything that goes on. This is the main reason why people do not see
anything wrong with the dystopia, they are in because the government explains that the books are

Why Abortion Should Stop The Abortion
Why Abortion Should stopped
For everyone an abortion is defined as the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus from a
female, in order to end a pregnancy (Webster, Merriam). Abortions are wrong because one cannot
create life; therefore a person should not be able to terminate a life before it actually starts.
Depending on the situation people may feel that abortions are justifiable. Due to a person being
too young, or just simply unprepared. I feel that either way that it is murder. We wouldn t accept a
serial killer roam the streets as if nothing happened. In this argument it is the same thing. (The
book of exodus 20:1 7) clearly states thou shall not kill. You can t avoid that in any form or fashion
(exodus 20:1 7). Every human being has a right to life even if they are not born, yet there are no
rules to stop this crime.
I feel that abortions should be illegal anywhere on this planet. I searched up some facts about how
abortions can hurt you in The killing of an human was doing no wrong is a horrible act, even if
that human being has yet to be born. Unborn babies are considered human or soon to be humans by
the government and people who actually cares about humans. The federal Unborn Victims of
Violence Act, which was made to protect unborn children from assault and murder. The law states
that under federal law, anybody intentionally killing or attempting to kill an unborn child should be

The Ethical Theories Of The Ethics
There are eight major ethical theories the ones that were focused on in the video were
deontological and utilitarian. The deontological theory is the sense of obligation, that someone
feels that it their morally duty to do the right thing. The utilitarian theory is that people act and
behave so that they will produce happiness for the greatest number of people. These two
different ethical theories are ways that people behave and think is morally correct. In the video
the professor talked about the two ethical theories and how the choices that people make can
connect to these two theories. The professor said that the utilitarian theory mantra is that good
makes something right, and that these people are results oriented. The deontological theory
mantra is that right makes something good, and that these people are motive oriented. The big
question is what is the morally right thing to do? consequential moral reasoning says that
someone should not kill an innocent person to say others. I think people should always try to
avoid hurting other people, but if you could save five people and only one person die, would you
do it? For example in the first situation where there are two ways the train can go with workers on
it, with no brakes, and it can either hit five workers and save the one, or save five, and kill one
worker by going down another track. The train driver has to decide quickly what to choose. Either
way someone has to die, should it be five people or one? I

Simon Bolivar does not deserve the title of Liberator of Latin America.
Latin America as we know it today has undergone many changes throughout history. The beginning
for this time of change was 1808. Spain, the country most widely responsible for the colonization
of Latin America, was in trouble with France s master of conquest, Napoleon Bonaparte. Napolien
overthrew the King of Spain and replaced him with his brother, Joseph Bonaparte. The

In Venezuela, the Republics are torn down by bloody counter revolutions, led by non creoles. In
Mexico, Father Hidalgo and Morelos were crushed by their conservative countrymen.
The second phase, which was less political and more militarily based took place between 1815 and
1825, and ended with the triumph of the patriots. It was an an all out militarization of the war;
SimГіn BolГvar, for example, was able to incorporate popular elements into his armies, such as the
llaneros (plainsmen), who had previously been formidable enemies of the patriot enterprise, and
actually had forced his early attempts at independence into the ground. There change of loyalty to
him indicated his own changing in value and understanding that he would need to please more than
the creole class.
In Mexico, a different process took place, but it reflects the real politics that characterized this
successful predominatly military phase: the Royalist commander AgustГn de Iturbide assimilated
conservative and progressive elements into an independent monarchy with him at its head. He did
not last long, but he lasted long enough to ensure the transition from colonial to national Mexico.
The victory of the patriots was ambigious, however the social and political structures of power
continued to be oppressive for the mass majority of the people in the new republics.
Throughout the nineteenth century, incessant civil war resulting from the powder keg of popular

The Border Cities Of El Paso And Ciudad Juarez
Along the Texas/Mexico border there are many border cities, and among the border cities there is a
trend that points to an advantage of prosperity on the US side compared to the Mexican side of the
border. The border cities of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez show an example of the US advantage over
the Mexican side; El Paso is a Texas city on the Texas/Mexicoborder, and in 2014 it was the city
with the lowest crime rate in the US ; Ciudad Juarez, on the other hand was known as one of the
deadliest cities in Mexico . Along with the differences in crime rates, El Paso and Ciudad Juarez
have many differences that make them clear examples of the advantage that Texas border cities
hold over Mexican border cities.
Crime
In 2010, Ciudad Juarez was one of the most violent cities in all of Mexico with 3,057 murders .
Ciudad Juarez became an example of the extent of the drug war that was occurring in Mexico in
the 2000s. Death had become a common occurrence in Ciudad Juarez. At the height of the drug
war in Mexico, between the years of 2007 and 2012, around 11,078 people were murdered in
Ciudad Juarez . In contrast to Ciudad Juarez, El Paso had the lowest crime rate in the US in
2014 . According to the Neighborhood Scout website s interactive map, crime rates in the city of
El Paso are for the most part low, but near the border there is a high crime rate. The higher crime
rate found along the border is probably due to the ongoing drug trade and illegal immigration that

Douglas Moo Justification Summary
In this summary of justification we first start out with Douglas Moo s interpretation of the word
justification and what it means to him. Moo starts out with the views of justification he was taught
as a kid and was commonly taught before him. Moo starts out how he was first taught that
justification was forensic. This was how God declared a person right before him. The next view of
justificationMoo was taught was how justification was before God. The focus of the doctrine is on
the individual human who is placed in a new relationship with God. Moo then learned how
justification is on account of Christ. That means God justifies a person not on the basis of anything
that a person does but on the basis of what Luther called alien righteousness , the righteousness of
Christ that is imputed to that individual. He also learned that... Show more content on

This means that no one can contribute anything to their justification and that its entirely a gift
from God. These views are what Moo would call a classic reformation doctrine. These views;
however, have changed in today s world. The classic reformation doctrine of justification has
changed due to academic, ecclesiological, cultural, and practical pressures. Moo then switches to
the reformation view and modern academic view of how people get to sanctification. The
reformation view is they emphasize on having a genuine faith that will lead to works and that if
you truly have been justified then you will be sanctified. The modern academic views blurs the
distinctions if faith and works together. They also do they same with justification and sanctification.
Moo then goes on to answer some key questions that we face today on justification. Moo first
answers what does justification mean. Moo says that justification is forensic only and he believes
that. Moo then answers at what time does justification happen and he says that justification happens

The Effects Of Childhood Poverty On The Community And...
This paper will be introducing and discussing child poverty. The focus will be on the ongoing
problem of child poverty within developed countries and the negative consequence of child poverty
including its impacts on economic and social chances for those in poverty. I will be seeking to
determine the negative effects of childhood povertyon the individual, whether that be an
immediate effect, a lasting long term effect, or something that does not show up until later on in
life. Secondly I will be searching to ascertain the changes in child poverty within developed
countries as well as what policies are in practice to help reduce poverty. Finally, I will be looking
to discover the effects of childhood poverty on the community and society in general.
Child poverty negatively impacts a youth both immediately and in the future. Child poverty is
defined as an environment that is damaging to their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual
development (UNICEF, 2004). This definition by UNICEF covers much of the damage that can
be done to a youth both mental and physical due to the effects of poverty. For children who are
forced to live in poverty there are damaging side effects such as; more frequent learning
disabilities when compared to those who are not facing child poverty (Clarke, 2016). As well as
language delays and anti social behaviour (Clarke, 2016). Children who face child poverty are

The Use Of Lsd And Its Effects On The Brain
Lysergic Acid Diethylamide or LSD is a hallucinogenic drug that can be taken orally, injected or
even absorbed through the skin. Once LSD has entered the body, it starts to take effects on the
levels of serotonin in the brain which can cause; hallucinations, mood change, and even sensory
distortion. After taking LSD, the effects on the brain usually last from 6 to 9 hours depending
on multiple factors; the dosage of LSD taken, the subject taking LSD, and even the user s mood
can affect the duration of LSD use. LSD is a non lethal, non addictive, and a non habit forming
drug that has little to no effect on the long term health of an individual. However, LSD has been
illegal since the 1960 s. Not only did availability of LSD become scarce with the criminalization of
the substance, but the legislation also put a halt on the research of the chemical as well. Much of
the way LSD interacts with the brain has been left unknown. This derivative from the rye fungus
Ergothas been the source of controversy that has left many people wondering why LSD has been
classified as a drug that is just as dangerous to use as heroin. It becomes difficult for an individual
to understand how legislation could criminalize a chemical without completely understanding how
it functions and affects people. LSD should be legalized for scientific, medical and recreational
usage. Troche 2

Job was a righteous man who feared God and upheld divine standards. He abounded in gifts of
mercy and acts of godly devotion. Job routinely offered sacrifices to atone for his children s sins.
Hence, God was quite pleased to observe as his servant maintained integrity in his dealing. The
Almighty spoke about Job s godly devotion to Satanthe Devil. In fact, Satan claimed that Job was
primarily concerned with selfish interests. God decided to allow Satan to bring trials upon Job to
test the patriarch s motives. In this essay, I will highlight the significance of righteousness in the
debates between Job and his friends.
Job s debate with his friends was precipitated by the former s determination to uphold righteous
standards. Notably, Job experienced tremendous tribulations due to Satan s efforts. His 10 children
died while his livestock was killed. Job s servants also died under mysterious circumstances.
Unfortunately, his wife deserted and mocked him for his faith in God. In fact, she taunted him to
curse God and died. Nevertheless, these events could not break Job s integrity. Satan was
determined to intensify his physical attacks on Job. Job was struck with a debilitating illness that
subjected him to constant pain. Members of the community also shunned him. Later, three friends
of Job came to visit him. However, they did not say anything to Job for three day.
Job s friends claimed that he was suffering due to secret sins. Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar were

Pregnancy Discrimination Essay
Pregnancy Discrimination There are many issues to consider in pregnancy discrimination. The
well being of the child, the well being of the mother, employer/employee relations, as well as
gender issues. There are however several State and Federal laws that protect people against
pregnancydiscrimination. Two of the Federal laws are the Pregnancy Discrimination Act and the
Family and Medical Leave Act. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act was an amendment to title VII
of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, it is illegal for
an employer of 15 or more workers, to discriminate against a person because of pregnancy,
childbirth, or pregnancy related conditions. This means... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and leave as are offered for other medical conditions or disabilities.
#61623; A male employee is entitled to health insurance coverage for his wife s pregnancy related
conditions if a female employee s husband has comprehensive health insurance coverage.
The other Federal law, the Family and Medical Leave Act gives added protection. The Family and
Medical Leave Act went into effect August 5 1993.
It states that:
#61623; If a doctor or health care provider says their patient is sick and unable to work during
their pregnancy, they may be able to get up to 12 weeks off without pay under this law.
#61623; Time off is also allowed for childbirth, adoption, and to care for a sick child or family
member.
#61623; If someone takes time off under this law, they have the right to the same job or a job with
equal pay and benefits when return to work.
The above two laws help prevent pregnancy discrimination, giving employees certain rights and
laying down basic rules for employers to follow. The question is then how effective are these laws?
And are they an aid or hindrance to business.
The laws seem to be effective, thousands of women a year who are pregnant or new mothers file

1.Introduction:
Space is made of many secrets yet to be discover, but every day we tend to move closer.
However, due to size of space we will never stop learning. For example, 50 years ago many
people thought it impossible to travel to the moon, but as time continue we realize that nothing
is impossible, it just needs time. Although, the discoveries we have made regarding to space are
relative new, the ideals and concept are not. Most of them come from people such as Galileo or
even Leonardo da Vinci which most of them are over half a century old. Moreover, Ulysses was
also an idea that started way before it was commissioned, but due to the lack of technological
advances it had to be put a hold. However, it was never forgotten. Furthermore, this paper will look
at Ulysses Spacecraft, but most importantly how Ulysses was able to study the heliosphere during
its 18 year mission orbiting around the sun. In other words, this paper will focus on how Ulysses
was able to study the region of space influenced by the Sun and its magnetic field. As well as its
discoveries and the partnership between NASA and ESA which with their collaboration made the

Summary Of Le Guin s The Child And The Shadow
In 1975, fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin delivered a lecture discussing a Hans Christian
Andersen fairy tale she remembered from childhood. In this story, a man burdened by cowardice
could not gather the courage to visit the house of the pretty woman that lived across the street. His
shadow; his dark desires and guilty pleasures, wanted the man to go across the street. Yet, the man
did not want to for he was afraid, this fear caused him to tell the shadow to leave. Thus, the shadow
left. The shadow goes on to explore the house of the pretty woman, and accordingly strays
unaccompanied and unattended through the world. Years later, the man and the shadow reconnect.
The man discovers that his actions have now caused his shadow to become his master , and missing
that part of himself, the man is executed. Le Guin uses this dark tale in combination with Jungian
psychology and Daoism philosophy to illustrate that a person and their shadow must interact and
coexist with each other to survive. Without this balance, life will be impossible. Throughout The
Child and the Shadow , Le Guin makes eloquent points about the importance of a person s shadow,
Carl Jungs archetypes in relation to the shadow, and how fantasynovels help children adapt to the
traumatic events of reality. In Hans Christian Andersens fairy tale, the man is executed. The man
had rid himself of his shadow, attempting to hide the flaws that were lurking inside. For, in the
words of Le Guin, The shadow is the

The Luck Of Ginger Coffey Essay
In Brian Moore s The Luck of Ginger Coffey, the city of Montreal is depicted as being in a kind
of stasis, its landscape and inhabitants repeatedly described as frozen and stagnant: Four forty
five. Office workers, waiting release as the minute hand moved slowly towards the hour, looked at
the darkness beyond their windows and saw edges of frosting begin to mist the panes (Moore117).
Despite this passage s emphasis on stillness, however, it nevertheless features two references to time
. Throughout Moore s novel, attention is repeatedly paid to specific times or time frames,
complicating the underlying image of Montrealas a city averse to progress. Considering the
subjectiveness of the third person limited narration, it seems best to examine... Show more content

The profession of the contemporary newspaper typist saw a change in corporate culture wherein
the clock became a powerful object, owned only by the foreman and governing the employees. It
seems, however, that Moore s depiction of time is more appropriately a reflection of Ginger s
fixation on the myth of the new world as a land of boundless opportunity. Indeed, the clock does
seem to be independent of the diurnal cycle: As [Coffey] started off, the sun moved west,
unadmitted by the pall clouds which all day had curtained the frozen river and the city islanded
within it . . . Four forty five (117). This image of the sun being blocked from the city by clouds
demonstrates the city s apparent ignorance for the sun s position in the sky, yet the passage
continues on, repeatedly referring to the passing minutes as Coffey makes his way to the
Tribune. One thing that time does not seem so independent from, however, is the lives of the
office workers in the financial district, waiting release as the minute hand moved slowly towards
the hour (117). At five o clock . . . down came the office workers, spilling out into the streets
(117); at five thirty . . . [another] policeman . . . invited Coffey to cross [the street] (117). In this
passage, the connection between time and nature has been completely severed and time has become
reappropriated as

The Importance Of The Japanese Education System
Japan may be known for its beautiful cherry blossoms when they are in bloom, but they are also
known for its unique education system. The rigorous workload these students go through have
changed the way their overall performance scores have looked. The way that the Japanese
education system works has some ways that align with how the brain learns. The uniqueness of
Japan s educationbegins with the way their schooling is set up. The typical schoolyear goes from
April to March of the following year, with a summer break from mid July to the end of August.
Unlike American schools, Japanese schools have three trimesters to break up the school year.
Keeping with the pattern of three, the lower education of Japan is split into a six three three
system: six years of elementary school (Shogakko), three years of middle school (Chugakko), and
three years of high school(Kotogakko). There are different learning styles that are available once a
student reaches high school. The courses that students can take are sorted into the categories of
general, specialized, and integrated. General courses are suitable for all students. Specialized
courses have specific subject matter suited for students who have chosen their future vocation, and
include courses in agriculture, industry, commerce. . . music, art, and English (globalroadwarrior

students are taught by one teacher for all the subjects

Dominant Position of a Company
According to the European competition case law, a dominant position is defined as the power of a
firm to behave to an appreciable extent independently of its competitors, customers and consumers .
It is obvious that a firm or several firms which hold a dominant position can determine price, the
amount of production, supply and this is because these firms can act independently of their
competitors and customers. As a result, dominant position can lead to the market power and in this
situation a firm or several firms have an ability to individually make a big influence on the price
and total quantity produced which could result to the market failure. But does this definition make
an economic sense and how it should be interpreted in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, in order to determine the definition of dominant position in monopoly, at first we need to
understand the basic aspects of it. Monopoly is a situation when a certain agent is the only one
who supplies a particular good, of course, it is obvious that this market has a lack of economic
competition. In monopoly a company has a much bigger profit than it could expect in competitive
market, because that only firm regulates all the prices and services for that certain good. As a
result, it can raise the price and maximize its profit without worrying of losing its customers. So,
the dominant position in monopoly is a market with a single agent which has a power to operate
independently and has an ability to make a big influence on the prices and production.
Finally, to do the same in oligopoly we also need to understand the basic aspects of it. Oligopoly is
the market share of several firms which together make a big influence to the price or other
outcomes of a certain market, however the difference between monopoly and oligopoly is that in
oligopoly firms do not operate independently, because then they could lose some of their customers
to their competitors. That is why several dominant firms always try to cooperate together and
sometimes they even make some secret agreements in order to maximize their profits. So, the
dominant position in oligopoly is the market share of several dominant firms who have an ability to
make big

The Economic Impact Of Nuclear Energy
3.1 Economic Impact of Nuclear Energy
The primary reason that people intend to build a nuclear power plant is the cost of nuclear
energy. The number of nuclear power stations increased dramatically during the first oil crisis.
During that time, the nuclear energy is taken as a substitution of fossil fuels with reasonable
cost. Governments were afraid that the high oil price in the future would affect economics,
especially for those industrialized countries who have a lack of natural resources such as Japan
and some countries in Europe. Since the nuclear stations can operate for a fairly long period,
typically 40 to 60 years, the lifetime cost of nuclear generated electricity is low and can be very
competitive at a low price per unit energy produced. Also, majority of the cost of nuclear energy is
incurred during construction and preparation before it starts operating. The cost of uranium affects
little to the total cost of nuclear energy, so not like a thermal power station, which is sensitive to
the price of coal, natural gas or oil, the electricity price from a nuclear power plant will be pretty
stable. These advantages on cost will benefit both industry and people s living. A report from
Mckinsey about energy in Japan shows that after the Fukushima accident, because of the shutdown
of nuclear power plants, household electricity prices have increased by more than 50% from 10
в‚µ/kWh to 16в‚µ/kWh. [27] The rise of electricity price may be a result of power shortage. This

The history of a barn can tell someone a lot about a place and the values of that place. Restoring
a barn takes time and effort, just like anything good in life. Barns are used for much more than
just a storage place, and they can describe a location or be part of a place s history. An old barn
could just be a pile of rotting wood, but by the same token, the Mona Lisa could simply be
described as a piece of canvas with some pigments attached. As one can see, when looking at barns
through different perspectives, one might gain a new appreciation. Barnpreservation is an important
way for the values of a society to be preserved just as certainly as art preservation helps society to

Although Sammy s sexual thoughts had been aroused by Queenie, their casual defying of
community standards had influenced more seriously Sammy s beliefs of rebellion. Sammy,

in front of the authoritative figure that Lengel represents. This incident proves to be the chance
for Sammy to transform his wishes into reality. It gave him the opportunity to impress Queenie

outcome. The girls, and who d blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say I quit to Lengel
quick enough for them to hear, hoping they ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero. This

  • 2. The Four Families of the Filovirus Ebola The filovirus Ebola consists of 4 families: Marburg, Ebola Zaire, Ebola Sudan, and Ebola Reston. It is a rather simple virus in structure; each contain a single strand RNA strand and 7 different proteins, 3 which are only slightly understood and 4 that are completely unknown. The virus harms the immune system like the HIV virus, but Ebolacauses an explosive attack. The virus is associated with the measles and mumps family, pneumonia viruses, parainfluenza viruses which include colds, and respiratory system related viruses. Unlike common viruses which are ball shaped, Ebola s shape represents that similar to a shepherd s crook, a long snake like thread that looks like a worm. Because the Ebola virus has a distinct structure, it has been classified as a thread virus in its own family of viruses, the filoviruses. Meet the sisters: Marburg (1st discovered) She originated from an African organism but received a German name. First identified in an old city of central Germany in 1967, Marburg devastated the town, killing 1 out of 4 victims and causing effects that resembled rabies. Scientists analyzed the virus structure and found strands and strands of tangled rope, some wrapped in looks similar to donuts. In this way, for some time, Marburg was called stretched rabies, its worm like shapes stretched out unlike the rabies virus which is bullet shaped. Effects Marburg attacks human tissue like nuclear radiation, damaging the nervous system and especially the brain. Victims ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on Evolution Embedded in Symbols Evolution Embedded in Symbols Two billion years ago two prokaryotes bumped into each other and formed the first multi cellular organism. 65 million years ago an asteroid hit the earth and dinosaurs became extinct. Three days ago, in your notebook you drew a mess of squiggles which to you represented Jackson Pollock s painting, Number 1, 1948. You wrote the word entropy on the upper left handcorner of the page. On the bottom right hand side you wrote, Creativity is based on randomness and chance. This paper is, in part, an exploration of the pictures and words that we place in notebooks; it is an investigation of the human fixation with the creation of symbols via art and writing. But is also about how the symbols drawn in one s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In her book, On Beauty and Being Just, Elaine Scarry states that beauty incites replication (4). Like a history of evolution, a history of human symbolic representation is heavily dependent on the act of reproduction. This reproduction has manifested itself quite literally. For example, when a painter finds something in nature to be beautiful, she can reproduce it on the canvas and when a writer finds a moment to be inspiring, she can transcribe the moment into a set of instructions [i.e. words] about how [a reader] can imagine or construct [that moment] (Dreaming by the Book, Scarry, 6). Like sexual reproduction which allows organisms to share their genetic material in order to continue species and to create new organisms, pictures and words help with a lateral transfer of cultural information, its continuance and recombination. To create a symbol of something with a string of words or with an art material is to perpetuate that which is beautiful for future generations. According to Dennett, before there were words, there were no word meanings, even if there were other sorts of meanings. (402) Dennett s hypothesis reminds us, at the most basic level that symbols mean something. To say that there are only a couple of meanings behind all artwork and writing would be to deny the complexity of the human symbol making and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The United States S Even though most prisons are very secure, they are nowhere near how secure Alcatraz was when it was open. Alcatraz was a strict, high security federal prison that s located on Alcatraz Island, in San Francisco Bay, California. While Alcatraz was open escapee Frank Lee Morris was one of the very few who had attempted to escape and he supposedly made it out alive. Alcatraz was the most secure prison on the planet. The walls, ceiling, and floor were made of concrete, and the prison gates were made of some of the strongest steel available. The island was given the nickname The Rock because of all the structures were made out of concrete. The island didn t need a fence around it as it was surrounded by the icy currents of the San Francisco ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some people who have made it out of the prison have tried to swim in the bay, but since they were accustomed to warm waters they either died of hypothermia or drowned. If a prisoner was found escaping, they usually were put in the hole, which is a cell that has a solid door to block off all light. The cells in the hole have no bed, no blankets, no AC which made it cold. Prisoners were not allowed to wear clothes except for boxer shorts. A day in the life of a prisoner at Alcatraz is pretty tough. At 6:30 AM the prisoners woke up and tidied up their cells. At 6:45 they went to the mess hall to eat breakfast. Then around 7:25 guards took the inmates to their jobs such as, gardening, tailoring, and laundry. They worked until 11:40 which is when the inmates had dinner, the same way as breakfast. After dinner they went back to work and had a break after two hours, then they returned to their cells at 4:45. The final lockup was at 4:50 and lights out at 9:30. A total of 13 official counts was made every 24 hours to make sure that all prisoners were accounted for. While the prison was open, there were only 36 inmates who tried to escape, and two of the 36 tried to escape twice, It s mighty good to get up and leave. • 5. Concentration Camp Research Paper Bella Gonzalez Dina Hanna Daily Life in The Camps Life in a concentration camp was truly horrific, as many are already aware. But we tend to overlook the small details about the daily lives of prisoners that make the whole situation so much worse. The moment prisoners arrived at a concentration camp, they were stripped of their names and possessions. They were all given a number, which was usually tattooed on their wrists with sharp metal stamps . After this, their heads were shaved, and prisoners were told that this was to prevent lice. Prisoners then received a black and white striped uniform, with an identification emblem sewn on to the upper left side of their shirts and jackets. These badges were colored inverted triangles, used to let officers know what offense the prisoners were placed in the camp for. Immigrants triangles were blue, criminals were green, homosexuals were pink, political prisoners were red, gypsies were brown, and Jehovah s Witnesses were purple. Jewish people had to wear a yellow Star of David instead of an identification triangle, but if they were charged on more than one offense, they would be made to wear a yellow triangle with a colored inverted triangle on top of it, forming the Star of David, but also showing the other offense through the color coded... • 6. Thomas Hart Benton s Impact On The Regionalist Movement Art Thomas Hart Benton was a muralist and an American painter. He had focus on the Regionalist movement art along with Grant and John Curry. Thomas Benton has had a great impact on the color, the resonant ideas and exuberance. Benton identified different diverse ideas of contradiction: the rituals and the urban, freedom, oppression, the poor, rich labor and entertainment (Marling, 1982). As Muraldeveloped the ideas, he span two epochs on the excess of Jazz Age and bitter side of depression in the country. This was expressed in the art work that he presented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The painting was done 1930 to 1931 which was paced on the New School board room from social research in the city of New York. This painting attracted attention and was bought by Equitable Life then later to Metropolitan Museum as an exhibit. Benton developed 10 panels of which a lot of them were 7.5 feet in height and 9 feet in width. The painting was in egg tempera having an oil glaze, strong attractive colors, wide modulation and a very much gleaming surfaces (Benton, 1983). The painting had an aluminum frame, with complexity in mounding and curves in the right angles that showed the vignettes in the panel and addition of emphatic strength (Dennis,1998). The paining showed changes in activities in the production of corn that was juxtaposed with clearing of the land for the activities. The clearing utilized a saw with lance teeth. • 7. The Effects Of Classroom Talk On The Classroom In teaching, a large proportion of time is spent in talking and listening. As the major factor in a classroom it should become the main process by which a pupil learns. After all it is the primary method that humans use to communicate. It leads me to ask how important is it? And does what is talked about in lessons equate to the quality of learning that is happening in the classroom. On the basis of these questions, Daniels (2001 cited in Alexander, 2004:8) argues that classroom talk not only mediates teaching and learning but the wider culture. Alexander (2004:9) also indicates that talk is necessary for the building of the brain itself as a physical organism and thereby expanding its power . Because talking is not recorded in a book unlike writing, teachers may tend to be less reflective on what is said rather than what is written. For instance, Alexander (2004:6) points out that it is always written work that is regarded as real school work and as the most reliable medium for measuring pupil s learning . Barnes (1992:124) also implies that learning is not simply adding bits of information to the previous knowledge. Rather, most important learning is a matter of working on understanding , which can be achieved through talk (ibid). In an effort to reveal the importance of classroom talk in student learning and their interrelation, I aim to discuss whether student learning is closely linked to the quality of classroom talk through the foundation subjects of science ... • 8. Cost Effectiveness Of The Surgical Treatments For Tn Several studies have compared the cost effectiveness of the surgical treatments for TN. Both Holland et al(57) and Pollock et al(5) conducted small studies in which they found that MVD produced a higher number of quality adjusted pain free years and was more cost effective than SRS. In Holland s study, while radiofrequency rhizotomy was found to be the most cost effective treatment, 74% of patients experienced a recurrence in pain. Sivakanthan et al(24) found that MVD produced a QALY gain of 8.2 at 5 year follow up while SRS was 4.9 QALYs gained. With MVD at 6.0 and SRS at 5.4, our study demonstrated a smaller discrepancy in QALYs gained than Sivakanthan. However, Sivakanthan s study only used one article each to calculate the QALYs for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These studies suggest that the durability of pain relief with MVD greatly influences patient satisfaction with the procedure. However, they used a small number of patients, and adequate literature on patient satisfaction is lacking. Our results must be interpreted with caution. The model makes several simplifying assumptions, any of which can impact our results. Our data arise from a series of indirect, nonrandomized comparisons, within which there is clinical heterogeneity. The studies analyzed varied with respect to patient selection, baseline severity of pain, treatment assignment, outcome parameters measured and time of follow up. The use of a random effects model partially compensates for heterogeneity but cannot completely correct for it. For example, the majority of TN studies fail to record the preoperative level of pain, preventing a comparison between the two(16). While there are clinical pain scales to correct this problem, they were not used in our analysis(59, 60). Our reliance on trial level data rather than individual patient information may also introduce aggregation bias. In addition to Monte Carlo simulations, we ran sensitivity analyses in which we systematically varied values of each major variable. None had significant impact on our results except when varied to extreme values. We cannot rule age out as an independent predictor of outcome in MVD, suggesting SRS may be the more effective treatment in the elderly. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Descriptive Essay About Summer Vacation In February during spring break, my Dad, nicknamed Moose, arranges a trip to stay on Seagull Lake. This is not like your ordinary trip; this is winter camping in the Boundary Waters, which requires hard work, the willingness to help out at all times, and a lot of preparation. This trip consists of cross country skiing, pulling 300 lbs on a sled across a long frozen lake, sleeping in tents in weather that is 20 degrees below zero, and portaging 2 miles to get the chance to fish on a secret fishinglake. The people that go on this 5 day tripevery year are Moose, my second cousin Paul Gerten and his dog, my uncle Danny, their friend Sterling Black, and I, although Danny had knee issues for a while which didn t allow him to come this trip. The year was 2016, and Sterling decided to bring his nephew named Birkley, whose mother had just passed away. Also, Moose brought along his work friend Brett Strand from Lifetime Fitness. We start our trip by driving up to my cabin in Silver Bay, Minnesota. The first night is a Thursday night without the old men s wives, so we go to a bar called the the Green Door where the men drink a bunch of beers and watch the wild game. Birkley and I of course only drink Coca Cola. Being the one out of the group that is too young to drink alcohol, and also the kid that can drive, I have to sober cab for the men. The main character is Esperanza Ortega from the book Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. Esperanza was a wealthy land owners daughter who lived in Mexico. Her family had to move to America because of her Papa s death. They had to become a servant herself instead of having servants. Although Esperanza faced many challenges as an immigrant, her hardest ones were when Esperanza did not know how to do daily chores because she had always had servants and that the dust storms caused Mama to become sick with Valley Fever. My first challenge is about when Esperanza could not do daily chores because she had always had servants. On page 118, Miguel said, ВЁ You hold the broom like this. One hand here and the other here. Then you push like this, or pull it toward you like this. Here you try.ВЁ Miguel is showing Esperanza how to hold a broom and how to sweep, because she has never had to do chores because she had always had servants to do all of her chores. Now she has to work. Esperanza now doesn t have servants and can work as well as anybody else because she has persevered and learned how to start over.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These statements are common examples of how many people view their race and identity. Similar to the statements made in the novels, Obasan by Joy Kogawa and More by Austin Clarke. Both novels illustrate people as attaching an individual s identity through their race, colour and ethnicity. Naomi Nah Cane characterized in Obasan, is born in Canada but is looked upon and is treated as an immigrant, similar to Idora Morrison who has a Canadian citizenship and has lived in Canada for many years is still viewed as an immigrant. Although, Naomi and Idora both raise questions on why they don t belong in the white community, however Idora truly fights back and raises a voice rather than Naomi who is more silent in such discriminations. Naomi was born in Vancouver; British Colombia but always is categorized as a Japanese woman and never accepted as a Canadian because of her physical characteristics and the past history of the war. Due to the war in 1942 caused by the attack on Pearl Harbour by the Japanese and some British territories, the Canadians restricted and alienated the Japanese from all of their activities; they seized their homes and property without any compensation, evacuated the Japanese from coastal British Columbia and even restricted them to go back. • 17. A Summary Of The Bell Jar 1.List the major topics/issues Sylvia Plath explores in The Bell Jar (at least four). To what extent are the issues still relevant today? The major topics explored in The Bell Jar include the inferiority of women, the wrongful treatment of the mentally ill, sexuality and the double standard for men and women on sex, and conformity to society s expectations. The inferiority of women refers to society s view that women are subordinate to men, and are supposed to serve men after marriage, become housewives, and bear babies. This perception of women in today s society has largely declined, due to the constant call for gender equality. While there still exist the suppression and discrimination of women, the proponents of which are heavily condemned. The wrongful treatment of the mentally ill at the time includes the overall perception that mentally ill is a choice not a serious disease, the condemnation and alienation resulting from that perception, and the doctors indifferent, sometimes inhumane attitude toward the mentally ill, which includes electro shock and solitary confinement. With great advancements in the medical field on mental conditions and an increase in people with mental disease, today people are generally sympathetic toward the mentally ill, who are treated appropriately by the doctors. Plath also highlights the issue of the double standards for men and women on sex, where men can pursue sexual intercourses freely, but women are supposed to keep chastity until marriage. Esther is troubled by this double standard throughout the novel, regarding sex as how a man controls a woman, and that she would only become free and own her body after she does a fitting for birth control, and loses virginity to Irwin, whom she will never see again. This issue has become relatively irrelevant today, as premarital sex is not considered a moral issue anymore. In the novel, Esther constantly struggles between being herself and conforming to society s expectations. In Esther s case, the society expects her to become a housewife and stop pursuing her passion once she is married. Confronting against society s expectations, Esther feels at times hopeless and disillusioned. This issue is still relevant today, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this research paper, we will be discussing an aspect of supply chain and logistics that I am interested in, how both are related and different, key activities in supply chain and logistics, and the ethics and social responsibility in both supply chain and logisticsmanagement. Logistics is a vital component of supply chain management. Both involve the planning, carrying out and management of goods, services and information from the point of origin to the point of consumption. Logistics aligns the multifaceted pattern of traffic and transportation, shipping and receiving, import and export operations, warehousing, inventory management, purchasing, production planning and customer service. Organizations, like the one I work for, see logistics as a critical design of the supply chain. When organizations incorporate logistics as a key component of the business plan, they can use it to manage, coordinate and monitor resources needed to move products in a smooth, timely, cost effective and reliable manner. Like Logistics, Supply Chain Management is an essential element of operational efficiency. The impact that supply chain has on our organization is substantial and exponential. This situation reinforces the idea that Pete enables Donald to take advantage of him. Just as history repeats itself, so does the cycle that is Pete and Donald. Donald once again takes advantage of his brother s loyalty when on the drive home from the farm the brothers pick up Webster, a hitchhiker and conman. Webster spins a tale too good to be true but Donald can t see anything other than dollar signs when Webster offers him a share in his gold mine in Peru. Pete, as most adults would have, can see the scam through Webster s tale immediately and tries to help Donald see the truth by offering up multiple snarky comments and direct questions for Webster to answer. It s just not enough though as Donald gives away Pete s $100 to Webster in good faith for a share in the mine. This is a much larger issue than the fact that Donald just gave away Pete s money and feels justified and blameless. The other issue is Pete s past experience should have taught Pete that Donald is incapable of understanding the value of other people s money or material items, which is part of the reason he was asked to leave the farm. ... Abortions are wrong because one cannot create life; therefore a person should not be able to terminate a life before it actually starts. Depending on the situation people may feel that abortions are justifiable. Due to a person being too young, or just simply unprepared. I feel that either way that it is murder. We wouldn t accept a serial killer roam the streets as if nothing happened. In this argument it is the same thing. (The book of exodus 20:1 7) clearly states thou shall not kill. You can t avoid that in any form or fashion (exodus 20:1 7). Every human being has a right to life even if they are not born, yet there are no rules to stop this crime. I feel that abortions should be illegal anywhere on this planet. I searched up some facts about how abortions can hurt you in The killing of an human was doing no wrong is a horrible act, even if that human being has yet to be born. Unborn babies are considered human or soon to be humans by the government and people who actually cares about humans. • 33. The Ethical Theories Of The Ethics There are eight major ethical theories the ones that were focused on in the video were deontological and utilitarian. The deontological theory is the sense of obligation, that someone feels that it their morally duty to do the right thing. The utilitarian theory is that people act and behave so that they will produce happiness for the greatest number of people. These two different ethical theories are ways that people behave and think is morally correct. In the video the professor talked about the two ethical theories and how the choices that people make can connect to these two theories. The professor said that the utilitarian theory mantra is that good makes something right, and that these people are results oriented. The deontological theory mantra is that right makes something good, and that these people are motive oriented. The big question is what is the morally right thing to do? consequential moral reasoning says that someone should not kill an innocent person to say others. I think people should always try to avoid hurting other people, but if you could save five people and only one person die, would you do it? For example in the first situation where there are two ways the train can go with workers on it, with no brakes, and it can either hit five workers and save the one, or save five, and kill one worker by going down another track. The train driver has to decide quickly what to choose. Either way someone has to die, should it be five people or one? I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Venezuela, the Republics are torn down by bloody counter revolutions, led by non creoles. In Mexico, Father Hidalgo and Morelos were crushed by their conservative countrymen. The second phase, which was less political and more militarily based took place between 1815 and 1825, and ended with the triumph of the patriots. It was an an all out militarization of the war; SimГіn BolГvar, for example, was able to incorporate popular elements into his armies, such as the llaneros (plainsmen), who had previously been formidable enemies of the patriot enterprise, and actually had forced his early attempts at independence into the ground. There change of loyalty to him indicated his own changing in value and understanding that he would need to please more than the creole class. In Mexico, a different process took place, but it reflects the real politics that characterized this successful predominatly military phase: the Royalist commander AgustГn de Iturbide assimilated conservative and progressive elements into an independent monarchy with him at its head. He did not last long, but he lasted long enough to ensure the transition from colonial to national Mexico. The victory of the patriots was ambigious, however the social and political structures of power continued to be oppressive for the mass majority of the people in the new republics. Along with the differences in crime rates, El Paso and Ciudad Juarez have many differences that make them clear examples of the advantage that Texas border cities hold over Mexican border cities. Crime In 2010, Ciudad Juarez was one of the most violent cities in all of Mexico with 3,057 murders . Ciudad Juarez became an example of the extent of the drug war that was occurring in Mexico in the 2000s. Death had become a common occurrence in Ciudad Juarez. At the height of the drug war in Mexico, between the years of 2007 and 2012, around 11,078 people were murdered in Ciudad Juarez . In contrast to Ciudad Juarez, El Paso had the lowest crime rate in the US in 2014 . Moo starts out with the views of justification he was taught as a kid and was commonly taught before him. Moo starts out how he was first taught that justification was forensic. This was how God declared a person right before him. The next view of justificationMoo was taught was how justification was before God. The focus of the doctrine is on the individual human who is placed in a new relationship with God. Moo then learned how justification is on account of Christ. That means God justifies a person not on the basis of anything that a person does but on the basis of what Luther called alien righteousness , the righteousness of Christ that is imputed to that individual. Moo then switches to the reformation view and modern academic view of how people get to sanctification. The reformation view is they emphasize on having a genuine faith that will lead to works and that if you truly have been justified then you will be sanctified. The modern academic views blurs the distinctions if faith and works together. They also do they same with justification and sanctification. Job s debate with his friends was precipitated by the former s determination to uphold righteous standards. Notably, Job experienced tremendous tribulations due to Satan s efforts. His 10 children died while his livestock was killed. Job s servants also died under mysterious circumstances. Unfortunately, his wife deserted and mocked him for his faith in God. • 45. Summary Of Le Guin s The Child And The Shadow In 1975, fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin delivered a lecture discussing a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale she remembered from childhood. In this story, a man burdened by cowardice could not gather the courage to visit the house of the pretty woman that lived across the street. His shadow; his dark desires and guilty pleasures, wanted the man to go across the street. Yet, the man did not want to for he was afraid, this fear caused him to tell the shadow to leave. Thus, the shadow left. The shadow goes on to explore the house of the pretty woman, and accordingly strays unaccompanied and unattended through the world. Years later, the man and the shadow reconnect. The man discovers that his actions have now caused his shadow to become his master , and missing that part of himself, the man is executed. Le Guin uses this dark tale in combination with Jungian psychology and Daoism philosophy to illustrate that a person and their shadow must interact and coexist with each other to survive. Without this balance, life will be impossible. Throughout The Child and the Shadow , Le Guin makes eloquent points about the importance of a person s shadow, Carl Jungs archetypes in relation to the shadow, and how fantasynovels help children adapt to the traumatic events of reality. In Hans Christian Andersens fairy tale, the man is executed. The man had rid himself of his shadow, attempting to hide the flaws that were lurking inside. The profession of the contemporary newspaper typist saw a change in corporate culture wherein the clock became a powerful object, owned only by the foreman and governing the employees. Indeed, the clock does seem to be independent of the diurnal cycle: As [Coffey] started off, the sun moved west, unadmitted by the pall clouds which all day had curtained the frozen river and the city islanded within it . . . This image of the sun being blocked from the city by clouds demonstrates the city s apparent ignorance for the sun s position in the sky, yet the passage continues on, repeatedly referring to the passing minutes as Coffey makes his way to the Tribune. But does this definition make an economic sense and how it should be interpreted in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, in order to determine the definition of dominant position in monopoly, at first we need to understand the basic aspects of it. Monopoly is a situation when a certain agent is the only one who supplies a particular good, of course, it is obvious that this market has a lack of economic competition. In monopoly a company has a much bigger profit than it could expect in competitive market, because that only firm regulates all the prices and services for that certain good. As a result, it can raise the price and maximize its profit without worrying of losing its customers. So, the dominant position in monopoly is a market with a single agent which has a power to operate independently and has an ability to make a big influence on the prices and production. Finally, to do the same in oligopoly we also need to understand the basic aspects of it. Oligopoly is the market share of several firms which together make a big influence to the price or other outcomes of a certain market, however the difference between monopoly and oligopoly is that in oligopoly firms do not operate independently, because then they could lose some of their customers to their competitors. • 50. The Economic Impact Of Nuclear Energy 3.1 Economic Impact of Nuclear Energy The primary reason that people intend to build a nuclear power plant is the cost of nuclear energy. The number of nuclear power stations increased dramatically during the first oil crisis. During that time, the nuclear energy is taken as a substitution of fossil fuels with reasonable cost. Governments were afraid that the high oil price in the future would affect economics, especially for those industrialized countries who have a lack of natural resources such as Japan and some countries in Europe. Since the nuclear stations can operate for a fairly long period, typically 40 to 60 years, the lifetime cost of nuclear generated electricity is low and can be very competitive at a low price per unit energy produced. Also, majority of the cost of nuclear energy is incurred during construction and preparation before it starts operating. The cost of uranium affects little to the total cost of nuclear energy, so not like a thermal power station, which is sensitive to the price of coal, natural gas or oil, the electricity price from a nuclear power plant will be pretty stable. These advantages on cost will benefit both industry and people s living. A report from Mckinsey about energy in Japan shows that after the Fukushima accident, because of the shutdown of nuclear power plants, household electricity prices have increased by more than 50% from 10 в‚µ/kWh to 16в‚µ/kWh.
