Reflection Of A Look At The Washed Ashore Sculpture Exhibit
This semester I attended the Washed Ashore Sculpture Exhibit. It is located on the campus of Iowa
State University in the Reiman Gardens. This event is related to Humanities because exhibit houses
many art sculptures made of trash. The trash is plastics and other house hold items that have
washed ashore in Oregon and Northern California. The purpose of the exhibit is to raise awareness
to the damages of plastic to the environment, what plastic can do to animals and ecosystems,
demonstrate how nonbiodegradable plastic is, and how much plastic there is in the ocean.
The exhibit is set up so that right as you walk it the butterfly exhibit entrance is off to your left,
and the research facility is off to your right. In between them is a hallway filled with Jellyfish made
of plastic water bottles and caps and other trash. At the end of the hallway is a pair of doors that
leads to a greenhouse that a bunch of plants and a large jellyfish. When you go outside, there is a
pathway that leads to each of the gardens and ten sculptures that is featured inside the Washed
Ashore Sculpture Exhibit.
I had four favorite sculptures in the gardens. One of my favorite pieces was the Polar Bear. Right as
you approached the entrance to the park, you are greeted by the polar bear. The polar bear
represented the results of global warming and loss of land for polar bears to live and hunt on.
Another was the Giant Jellyfish. Inside the greenhouse there was a giant Jellyfish hanging from the
ceiling.

Sally Hemings Jefferson Research Paper
Thomas Jefferson is a well known name in the United States history. Thomas Jefferson
accomplished many goals and ideas during his lifespan. He was a founding father, he wrote the
Declaration of Independence and serve as president for 2 terms from 1801 to 1809. During his first
term as president, there was speculation of him having a relationship with Sally Hemingsa slave. As
of today, it is still unknown if it was true and if he was the father of 6. For two centuries there
has been disagreement with this controversy however, there has been DNA test on Thomas Jefferson
s male descendants and Sally Hemings relatives and the real answer is still undiscovered.
In September of 1802, a political journalist James T. Callender published an article. In which he
claimed Thomas Jefferson had a sexual relationship with Sally Hemmings a slave and even had
children. Being the president the article spread all around quickly. Sally Hemings was a slave at
Monticello. She was the half sister of Thomas Jefferson s wife Martha Jefferson, her father had a
relationship with Sally Hemings mother and had her. She was described by other slaves as light
skinned and could have passed as white. Hemings became Jefferson s property by an ... Show more

The DNA test did not exactly prove that Jefferson was the father of Hemings children, it only
proved that Heming s children father was a Jefferson. On the DNA test scientist noted that there is
less than one percent probability is due to chance. Also Sally Hemings was not freed after Jefferson
s death. Martha, Jefferson s daughter permitted Sally Hemings to leave in 1826 not long after
Thomas Jefferson s death. Thomas Jefferson wrote letters to the Secretary of the Navy but those
letters were gone, many indicated those letters told the truth about Thomas Jefferson and Sally

1950 s Double Helix
In the 1950 s many scientists were trying to study and find the structure of DNA. Early before
the 1950 s the work of pioneers had discovered DNA. Scientists began to wonder what else is the
DNA made up of and what is it s structure. Many competed to discover the DNA. It just so
happens in 1953 two men succeeded in their goal. James Watson and Francis Crickmade a mark in
the history of science. On this day February 28, 1953 Watson and Crick made the discovery of a
double helix in the DNA.
Studying DNA is understanding how genes process within new cells. It helps discover the genetic
code and protein synthesis. DNA has a complex structure simple enough to be discovered. The
importance of the double helix is made up of the shape of a ladder ... Show more content on

They shared some of the same ideas on how they could solve the problem. The two men had very
different personalities, they respected each other s work and became very good friends. Through
this friendship Watson and Crick came up with an idea of testing their theory of how the DNA
molecule might fit together by using stick ball models. Even though their first attempt failed, they
didn t give up. In addition to the stick ball models, Watson and Crick used x ray pictures to give
them ideas for the structure.
There were two scientists that were experts in taking these x ray pictures. Watson and Crick used
pictures taken by Rosaline Franklin and Maurice Wilkins to gain some valuable information.
Within two years of starting their study Crick and Watson were able to put together an accurate
model of the DNA structure. The double helix model shape would eventually help scientist all over
the world learn more about genetics. DNA is composed of nucleotide deoxyribose sugar a phosphate
group and four nitrogen. Phosphate and sugar link to form a polymer x ray provided the final clue
of DNA. DNA molecule is a double helix shaped of a structure like a twisted ladder. The ladder is
formed from pairs of nitrogen bases A, T, C, and

Hybrid Threat Essay
The Hybrid Threat and its Characteristics A hybrid threat is, according to TC 7 100, ?the diverse
and dynamic combination of regular forces, irregular forces, and/or criminal elements all unified to
achieve mutually benefitting effects.?[footnoteRef:1] This essay will address three of the four
major characteristics of a hybrid threat. A hybrid threat comes in different forms, but they almost
always employ some combination of regular forces, irregular forces, and criminal elements
simultaneously, employ an ever changing variety of equipment and tactics, and acquire or refine

This ability to adapt to current conditions, both politically and militarily, is absolutely necessary
for any force to be able to claim victory. Again, we turn to the conflict between Israel and
Hezbollah as a good case study. As suggested by Cordesman, Hezbollah benefits from the quality
of Iranian training and doctrine for its ability to adapt. He points out that ?Hezbollah is probably
better trained and more ready than most guerrilla forces,?[footnoteRef:9] which could be directly
resultant from its multiple battles with Israel. Hezbollah continues to grow stronger with every

Analysis Of Sergio Leone s A Fistfull Of Dollars
What could be more quintessentially American than having a national touchstone be reinvented
by a foreigner? By the time Sergio Leone began work on A Fistfull of Dollars in 1964, the
Western and all of its trappings had been around for nearly a century. Whether it be through
literature, film, television, or radio, stories of pitched gun battles and hard fought backwater living
in that peculiar period of the untamed American frontier became one of the United States chief
cultural exports. Over the course of the Dollars Trilogy of A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars
More(1965) The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966) in addition to Once Upon a Time in the West
(1968) Leone took the trappings of the Western and completely turned the genre on its head in both
style and substance. Unlike the saintly heroes of old, Clint Eastwoods Man With No Name was a
remorseless killer, only concerned with the gold in his pocket and the poncho on his back.
Violence was not as quick and easy as John Ford would lead you to believe: Leone was unafraid
to depict violence in full while making it clear that taking the life of another was an ugly and
pointless endeavor. Higher notions of heroism and civilization had no place in Leone s world, his
characters interested only in enriching themselves or settling the score with their adversaries. Out
on a frontier bereft of social structure or authority, Leone s characters shape their own reality with
a few well placed dollars and a loaded gun.

Patient Confidentiality Essay
Patient Confidentiality
As healthcare providers, maintaining a patient s confidentiality, human dignity and privacy is
expected at all times. Nurses are faced with maintaining patient confidentiality on a daily basis.
The Coded of Ethics for Nurses is the framework of nonnegotiable ethical standards and obligations
that all nurses are to uphold. Nurses are to be accountable for their actions and are expected to
advocate and strive to protect the rights, health and safety of patients (American Nurses
Association, 2011).
Constant patient turnovers, visitors and numerous workers in and out of the emergency area can
make it difficult for staff to maintain patient confidentiality. Due to lack of space and to give quick

According to the ANA (American Nurses Association), it is the duty of nurse to protect the patient
s rights, safety, health and advocate for the patient. By treating the patient in an open area, invades
their privacy, can cause embarrassment and most of all jeopardize trust between the patient and
care giver. This negligent care could also lead to legal ramifications in the future against the hospital
. By breaking this trust, the patient may also omit valuable information that could affect their
treatment ultimately causing them harm. Some patients may become noncompliant with their
prescribed treatment. It is essential that effective communication between patient and care provider
occurs at all times. . Healthcare providers are obligated to give safe and effective care.
As an effective and ethical leader, it is of most importance that they create and foster an ethically
principled environment. In this scenario, the importance of patient confidentiality would be
identified and addressed with all staff members of the health team. Ethical behaviors would be
discussed with each team member in order to ensure that the healthcare needs of the patient are
met as well as their privacy protected. A new process would be implemented so that patients
would be identified by assigned numbers instead of identified by name. Also it would be enforced
that no patient be treated in an open area unless some

The Ethical Issues Of Darby s Whistle Blowing Decision
Question 4 1.The ethical issues outlined in this case are whether Spc. Darby s whistle blowing
decision was correct and if Spc. Sivits s claims of obedience and rule following are sufficient for
his decision to not blow the whistle. 2.The fear of repercussions of disobeying military orders
should not be an allowable excuse for not whistle blowing. From the utilitarian perspective
actions are right insofar as they promote happiness and wrong as they bring the reverse of
happiness: pain (Mill, 1910.) The repercussions of disobeying orders would be wrong because it
would bring produce the reverse of happiness via pain and privation of pleasure. However, one
also assess the situation from the view of Kant that maxims should only be acted on when they
can become a universal law (Kant, 1898.) Should everyone not act for of disobeying orders, we
can presume that other heinous crimes would go unreported. Returning to Mill we can see how
this situation would lead to more pain and privation of pleasure for all of humanity as opposed to
a single officer. Therefore, both the utilitarian and deontological perspectives prevent the fear of
repercussions from being an allowable excuse for not whistle blowing. 3.Whistleblowing should
be praised. From the utilitarian point of view, whistleblowing poses a unique challenge. In either
the action to blow the whistle or not there is some reverse happiness or pain produced. In the case
of Spc. Darby his decision to seven members of the company

Science Should Progress Through Falsification And...
Popper believes science should progress through falsification and demarcation as a way to
distinguish real scientific theories from pseudoscience. (A. Popper) Falsification is how a
scientist should look at a problem they are attempting to solve instead of using existing theories
and treating them as scientific laws you should instead try and prove existing theories wrong
using emperical evidence to solve the questions being asked. (A. Popper) believes Science keeps
moving forward and the only way to progress is to prove existing theories wrong, replacing them
with new theories. In contrast verification of theories (attempting to prove a theory right) holds
little water with Popper this is because proving a theory right has already been done. All a
researcher must do to prove a theory right is duplicate a previous study or experiment and this
according to (A. Popper) is not science and is not the advancement of scientific knowledge.
Furthermore (A. Popper 4.0 The growth of Human Knowledge) Popper believes science is
falsifiable and that their are no true facts. The scientific methoduses a deductive process. However
this deductice process does not compare the hypothesis and conclusions with the actual theory. All
observations and conclusions are theory based. Discussed previously theories according to Popper
should be scrutinized using falsification.
Popper has a four step procedure for his view of the deductive process. (A. Popper 4.0 The growth

Wladyslaw Szpilman. The Pianist: The Extraordinary True Story of One Man s Survival in
Warsaw, 1939 1945. (New York: Picador, 1999). [ISBN: 978 0 312 26376 8]
The Pianist is the story of Wladyslaw Szpilman s experiences leading to up, and throughout the
German invasion/occupation of Poland. He writes an emotional autobiography about his trials, and
experiences in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. Throughout his journey, Szpilman must
attempt to navigate the rapidly changing political and social situation in Warsaw. He gives us an
overview (highlighting the important events) of his family s journey from a Jewish family of
moderate standing (thanks to his exceptional piano playing) stripped of their possessions, their
home, and finally each other. Within all of this turmoil, Szpilman survives every danger and ordeal
to document his journey after the Russian Army at the end of World War II liberates Warsaw.
Throughout the story, the focus remains limited to what is happening inside the Warsaw Ghetto,
and the immediate area in Poland. Most of what is reported to the author in the writing comes
secondhand from outside the Ghetto sourced from rumor and hearsay. This fact highlights the
stress and uncertainty within Warsaw prior to the German occupation, which is a substantial sub plot

The Pros And Cons Of Environmental Pollution
Environmental health is your wellbeing of your surroundings or conditions in which a person,
animal, or plant lives or operates. There things effect your air pollution like carbon monoxide you
can get things like asthma. Also there clean water there different type of water depend where you
live. Finally there is way to improve your environmental health and those around you.
Cars and trucks produce air pollution throughout their life, including pollution emitted during
vehicle operation, refueling, manufacturing, and disposal. Additional emissions are associated with
the refini ary and secondary pollution. Primary pollution is emitted directly into the atmosphere;
secondary pollution results from chemical reactions between pollutants in the atmosphere. The
following are the major pollutants from motor vehicles. These particles of soot and metals give
smog its murky color. Fine particles less than one tenth the diameter of a human hair pose the
most serious threat to human health, as they can penetrate deep into lungs. PM is a direct primary
pollution and a secondary pollution from hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxides.
Diesel exhaust is a major contributor to PM pollution. This odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas
is formed by the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline and is emitted primarily from cars and
trucks. When inhaled, CO blocks oxygen from the brain, heart, and other vital organs. Fetuses,
newborn children, and people with chronic illnesses are especially susceptible to the effects of CO.
Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes,
allow air to come in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma your airways are always inflamed.
They become even more swollen and the muscles around the airways can tighten when something
triggers your symptoms. This makes it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs, causing
symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and/or chest tightness.
For many asthma sufferers, timing of these symptoms is closely related to

A Brief Biography of Rosa Parks
Have you ever heard of Rosa Parks? She stood up for rights of black people. If it wasn t for Rosa
we wouldn t be able to go to the same school with some of the friends we have today. She never
stopped on what she believed in. She was one of the people who started the bus boycott in
Alabama. In this biography you will learn about Rosa s childhood, adulthood, and greatest
accomplishments. Lets learn about Rosa and what lead her to standing up for herself and others in
a big way.
Rosa Parks was born February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Rosa had a younger brother,
Sylvester. Rosa s family moved town to town when she was a baby. Rosa s family moved in with
her mother s mom and dad, when she was little. Rosa s father didn t want to stay in Pine Level,
Alabama with her grandparents, so he left for good when Rosa was just 2 years old! Rosa was
taught to read by her mother at a young age. Once Rosa was old enough to go to school, she went
to a one room school in Pine Level. The school didn t have many school supplies. Rosa lived 8
miles from school, she could not take the bus, so she walked, 8 miles to, 8 miles back. Once or
twice , Rosa stood up to white boys who were teasing her or her brother. Rosa was very brave as a
child. As you can see, Rosa had tough times when she was a child. Now, lets go to the future and
see what Rosa s adulthood is like!
Rosa, in her later years, refused to drink water from the water fountains that were for blacks, only.

Accuvein Finder
Inserting an IV into a patient can be a painful experience, especially if the individual has veins
that are hard to visualize or palpate. Some reasons for difficulty inserting IV catheters include
obesity, veins that roll or blow easily, dark pigmented skin, and dehydration. With the help of
modern technology, devices called Accuvein finders have made it a less painful process for
patients. The author will discuss how these devices have compared to palpation and inspection on
hospitalized patients in the last five years. This paper will focus on three articles that tested the
Accuvein finders and the results of each. Accuvein is a device that uses infrared light to illuminate
veins (Aulagnier et al., 2014). It has been a preferred method over ultrasound because of its
portability and easy training. There are different brands of the vein illuminating devices, such as
Vein Locator Universal, which is used at Sharn Anesthesia in Tampa (Aulagnier et al., 2014).

Stakeholders Theory
The stakeholder theory is a theory of organizational management and business ethics that addresses
morals and values in managing an organization.[1] It was originally detailed by R. Edward Freeman
in the book Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach, and identifies and models the groups
which are stakeholders of a corporation, and both describes and recommends methods by which
managementcan give due regard to the interests of those groups. In short, it attempts to address the
Principle of Who or What Really Counts. [2]

most countries), the shareholders or stockholders are the owners of the company, and the firm has a

In contrast, Stakeholder theory argues that every legimate person or group participating in the
activities of a firm do so to obtain benefits and that the priority of the interests of all legitimate
stakeholders is not self evident.
Donaldson and Preston offer four central theses related to stakeholder theory.
1) Stakeholder Theory is descriptive in that it offers a model of the corporation.
2) Stakeholder Theory is instrumental in offering a framework for investigating the links between
conventional firm performance and the practice of stakeholder management.
3) Although Stakeholder Theory is descriptive and instrumental, it is more fundamentally
normative. Stakeholders are identified by their interests and all stakeholder interests are considered
to be intrinsically valuable.
4) Stakeholder Theory is managerial in that it recommends attitudes, structures, and practices and
requires that simultaneous attention be given to the interests of all legitimate stakeholders.|

Emollient Agents Make Our Skin Smoother Essay
Emollients
Emollients are agents that soften and make the skin smoother. They are also called moisturizers.
Emollients are used for dry skin or eczema. When a moisturizer is applied to skin, it covers the
skin with a protective layer that reduces the amount of water loss in the skin and prevents dryness.
Emollients also prevent the skin form itching and eczema from flaring up.
Are emollients, emulsifiers, and lotions polar or non polar?
Most lotions contain oil or other non polar ingredients. They also contain large quantities of water
which is polar. The oil in the lotion is emulsified so it can be mixed with the water. But, both
ingredients still remain in the lotion which makes it both polar and non polar. Emulsifiers are used

Many people buy lotions thinking that it has special ingredients that will help moisturize their skin,
but in fact water is the widely held ingredient in hand lotions.
Oil: oil is another important ingredient in hand lotions. Some lotions use liquid oils and others use
solid oils or butters. Avocado, coconut, Shea, and olive oils are some of the most popular oils used
in lotions.
Glycerin: it is also known as a humectant. It attracts moisture from the air to the skin and it is also
used as a lubricant to make the lotion smooth.
Citric acid: this is used as a preservative to prevent the other ingredients from spoiling. Citric acid
also helps lower the PH of the lotion and it makes it more suitable for the different skin types.
Other ingredients that are used are scents, color, etc.
How do hand lotions work?
When hand lotion is applied, it creates a barrier on the skin that prevents the oils from escaping and
does not allow any harmful substance to enter the skin that can cause dryness or irritation. It also
blocks water from leaving the skin and attracts water, this helps to maintain moisture in the skin.
The purpose of hand lotions
There are hand creams designed for different purposes. Most people use hand lotions for dry skin,
usually in the winter time. Lotions soften the hand and it looks more visually appealing. Some
people use lotions because they have eczema, and lotion prevents it from flaring up. Others may use

A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O Connor
Flannery O Connor s Southern Gothic short story, A Good Man is Hard to Find, is one of
sudden violence; although, it begins rather uneventful (Kaplan 1). Bailey, his wife, and their
children, John Wesley, June Star, and a baby boy, are all looking forward to a trip to Florida.
Grandmother, Bailey s mom, wants to go to east Tennessee to see her relatives, not Florida. She
uses an article in the newspaper that tells of an escaped criminal, the Misfit, which is headed to
Florida to try to persuade her son into not going there. Her attempt at persuading her son fails, and
so the adventure begins. While the grandmother and the Misfit are the central figures of Flannery O
Connor s short storyA Good Man is Hard to Find, Bailey, John Wesley, and June Star prove to be
instrumental characters because they are used to show a change in the mood of the story.
O Connor shows the reader through her writings that Bailey plays the role of a father, husband,
and son, and he tries to succeed at all of them. He is a man that is portrayed to be strong,
protective, and intelligent by the author (Nester 126). Another side of Bailey that rarely comes out
but is important to the story is his temper. After the familyhas a car accident, the grandmother
mentions that she is afraid of Bailey, and what he might do to her since she ultimately was
responsible for the car accident. This gives the reader a hint of violence in the story. The reader
also sees his unstable and rather intolerant

Conclusion
Copyright Law 1988 automatically applies whenever an individual undertakes any following
work such as: Dramatic, Artistic, Sound Recording, Musical or Film. In order for the law to
apply, the work requires to be an original and not copied or adapted from any existing work.
Usually the individual or joint authors who have created the work will exclusively own the work
and would be referred to as the first owner of copyright . However, if the work has been produced as

Duration will always run from January 1st of the year following the event indicated.
In all cases, individual national laws can, and often will, allow additional protection over and
above the terms of the Convention. For example, in the UK most work is protected for the life of
the author plus 70 years. There are also exceptions allowed for countries bound by the Rome Act.
When the term of copyright protection has expired, the work falls into the public domain. This
means that the work, has effectively become public property and may be used freely. This is how so
many companies can publish works by William Shakespeare, classical composers etc.
The full title is the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works. It was first
adopted in 1886 as an agreement to honour the rights of all authors who are nationals of countries
that are party to the convention. The current version of the convention is the Paris Act of 1971. The
convention is administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization, (WIPO).
The member countries form a Union, and the Act provides protection for the work of authors

Jack Johnson Wins The Olga Championship By Randy Roberts
The author, Randy Roberts in his article Jack Johnson wins the Heavyweight Championship sheds
light on the fight of Jack Johnson with Tommy Burns, he highlights the racial attitude in the
twentieth century. Roberts opens his article by mentioning about the concerned whites, as the
author proceeds, according to the whites it was a tragic and saddest day of their lives as the race
won. While Dixie was agitated, firstly because of the Booker T. Washington dined at the White
Houseand secondly was the victory of Jack Johnson. However, the blacks rejoiced all over the
United States with this news. Roberts mentions about a journalist report, it stated that the genuine
satisfaction the blacks experienced with the single victory of Johnson was not been observed in
forty years.
The author then mentions many industries concern about the blacks being enthusiastic to enter in
boxing due to the triumph of Johnson, which may result in a shortage of labor. On the other hand,
Jim Nasium a black writer counseled many young blacks to take up boxing as a serious
profession, he believed that it is the boxing ring where blacks could face whites on an equal basis.
There were many reports implicating that Johnson had kick started the revolution.
According to the author, it started in August 1908, when Tommy Burns reached Perth. While from
Perth to Sydney, people came in large numbers to cheer him. During this occasions, Burns was

Urban Myths Of Urban Legends
Imagine the urban legends from your younger years, a reminiscent of your wildest fears. Your
heart rate gradually increases from the thought, feeling it pump out from your chest. Your breathing
staggers and paranoia surrounds you. You re frozen from fear, yet you can t run or fight it off. As
we grow, urban legendsare intended to make us feel specific emotions: as children they instill
fear, as adolescents they re meant more as humorous banter, while as adults, they re forgotten
and replaced with new ones only to be told to a child later one thus far continuing the cycle. In the
urban legends: My Dead Girlfriend , Calls from Beyond , Bed Reckoning , and Carmen Winstead ,
we live in a fast track world where our phones as well as social media sites are main factors in our
lives. These four urban legends are made to scare us into being more cautious with who can easily
access your or a loved one s phone and or social media.
Starting with the urban legend titled, My Dead Girlfriend , a man begins receiving messages from
his girlfriend via Facebook. There s nothing seemingly wrong with getting messages from your
girlfriend, right? The only problem with those messages was that the man s girlfriend had died in
a car accident more than over a year ago. Before this creepy story ended up on Snopes.com it was
posted on Reddit s NoSleep community forum, usually a sharing source for original scary stories.

A Risk Engineering Approach to Project Management
Project Management A project is a group activity temporary in nature projected to achieve a desired
result, service or product in a unique manner (Chapman, 2007). A project is termed as temporary
since it has a set start and finish time period and is undertaken with defined resources and within a
set scope. The operations within a project are unique since they do not rely on the routing
operations. Rather, a set of operations are designated to meet the desired target. From this
understanding, it is deduced that project management will entail the process of meeting the set
goals for a particular activity. According to (Chapman, 2007), project management is the strategic
deployment of skills, knowledge and techniques to accomplish specific set goals efficiently and
effectively. Project management deviates away from normal organization operations to achieve
predefined targets. Project management reorients and organizes available resources to meet set
goals efficiently within a defined scope the set time period (Chapman, 2007). Project management
is divided into five interrelated but, distinctive phases. These phases are: Project initiation; Project
planning; Project execution; Project Monitoring and controlling and, Project Termination. In
project management, time, money and scope are the three principal components considered to have
a bearing on the success of the project. These are interrelated and, a balance between them is
needful in order to ensure efficient and

Ecofeminism- Links the domination of women and the...
Expanding Feminist Activism Ecological Feminism: local/global activism
Ecofeminism Links the domination of women and the domination of nature.
Ecofeminism places importance on our connection as people of one earth and also recognizes how
women have been, historically in the capitalist patriarchy, labeled as subordinate in relation to the
dominating body. The environment falls into this subordinate category because it continues to be
pressed and used to benefit the man machine. It may be hard for participants in the capitalist system
to open their eyes and accept an ecofeminist stance when the realms of ecology and capitalism are
held in opposition. Ecofeminists do not support the idea that women s increased economic, political

Ann Dale, a founding Senior Associate with the Sustainable Development Research Institute at the
University of British Columbia, quotes D. Bohm The very word environment is an abstraction, one
that is wrong in this context, it abstracts the environment from the person and the person from the
environment...But the so called environment is the very source of being for the person...It separates
things that are one (Dale 3). The constant polarization between male/female, society/environment
and economic warriors seeking incessant profit/the people that are exploited are all interconnected
and working together to maintain the power dynamic of the capitalist patriarchy.
A more egalitarian social order could be implemented through the rise of the concept sustainable
development. Robert Kates, a professor at Brown University believes that central to such a
sustainability transition will be, for both population and consumption, a transition from more to
enough (Schmandt 79). As members of a capitalist society we have been socialized to always want
more. We never have enough to satisfy our desires. I suggest we reassess our values. Sustainable
development has been criticized for its direct connection to the perpetuation of capitalist ideals
rather than truly challenging the existing structure. I believe that it is a good beginning to
controlling our patterns of consumption as they are. It is a starting point that may

Impact of GSP Plus Status on Pakiston s Economy Essay
IMPACTS OF GSP PLUS STATUS ON PAKISTAN S ECONOMY
During last days Pakistan succeeded to secure the long awaited duty free access to the European
markets for four years, by winning Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) Plus status with an
impressive count of votes.
The EU s Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) gives developing countries a vital access to
EU markets and contributes to their economic growth by allowing their exporters to pay lower
duties on their exports to the EU.
GSP PLUS status will allow 20 per cent of Pakistani products to enter 27 EU countries without any

Further government needs to formulate a comprehensive policy to salvage the textile industry
because exporters and manufacturers will not benefit from GSP Plus trade facility if facing the
problems like chronic energy shortages, high cost of production, , worsening law and order and
uncompetitiveness in international markets.
Pakistan have to overcome complacency, inefficiency, corruption, bureaucratic bottlenecks,
infrastructure problems and energy crisis to fully exploit the potential of the GSP plus status that
has recently been given to it by the European Union, said Syed Jawaid Iqbal, Chairman, SouthAsia
Forum.
The status quo also raises questions over the country s ability and preparedness to meet the
demand for textile products of EU countries and benefit fully from the GSP Plus status. Cotton s
local demand is expected to be increasing as Domestic Textile industry may require additional
quantity of million cotton bales during the year. Cotton prices are also increased to Rs.100/Munds
in the local market. These prices might further increase due to restoration of gas supply to Punjab
base textile mills. Cotton production for the next year is also estimated as 13millions bales against
the need of 15million bales to meet post GSP Textile export targets. In Faisalabad almost 50% of
the textile units in textile have been shut down due to cuts in gas

Descartes Method Of Doubt Essay
Question: Describe Descartes method of doubt. What beliefs does Descartes think survive his
method of doubt? Do you agree with his arguments? RenГ© Descartes (1556 1650) considered a
rationalist claims that before we can describe reality or what it means to exist, one must know
what reality and existence is. Descartes proposed that it is pointless to claim something is real
without justification. However for something to be justified it must be also be indubitable. In
[RenГ© Descartes, Meditation I, 1641] Descartes argues that ones beliefs can be systematically
doubted. All truths, for example; beliefs, ideas, thoughts, and matter should be doubted in order
to build a belief system that is indubitable. In this essay I will discuss the methods of doubt; these
include perceptual illusions, the dream problem, and a deceiving God. I will also discuss the
phrase I am, I exist and I am a thinking thing that passed the method the doubt. I will use these
methods of doubt and phrases to explain why the arguments are either weak or strong and whether
I agree to their meaning. The Method of Doubt Descartes s task in essence was to create a system
that would support indubitable knowledge; a creation that would allow a foundation for the
expansion of the truth and remove all doubt from knowledge. This means that if something is to be
true it is to be known beyond all reasonable and possible doubt. To do this Descartes uses the
following method: 1. Accepting only information that

This opened my eyes to the fact that I had to conquer this mountain of pages laying on my bedside

The final event that shaped America was The Great Depression. These are only a few of the many

What Does The Flags Symbolize In The Red Badge Of Courage
A symbol is something that stands for something else, such as a concept or belief. Stephen Crane
s The Red Badge of Courage is full of various symbols that convey different ideas as it follows the
journey of a young man named Henry Fleming who joins the army to fight during war. The title,
the red badge of courage, is an obvious symbol; however, other symbols also are important in
relating the story. Crane uses several symbols in his novelincluding flags, corpses, and the red
badge of courageto tell the story and create meaning. In Crane s novel, flags not only symbolize
different armies, but they also represent faith and sacrifice. Flags are most often associated with
the representation of a country or state. Similarly, Crane uses flags to stand for each the armies
that fight during the war in the novel. However, Crane s flags also represent abstract concepts.
The flag carried at the front of the regiment represents the faith soldiers have in their army. If

him the chance to sacrifice himself for a bigger cause. He believed death in battle would make

him realize that even if he was to die gloriously and deserving of an honor posthumously, he would

Despite what honorable deeds he was to accomplish during his time in the army, his death would

The Purpose Of Old Major s Speech
Novelist, George Orwell, in his narrative essay, Animal Farm, describes Old Major s
Speech. Old Major had a dream that animals are treated with equality and he wanted to address it
to the rest of the animals on the far. All the animals on the farm respected Old Major because he
was wise and he thinks about life when he sits alone in his stable. The purpose of Old Major s
speech was about his wisdom, how animals are treated, not respected and later when they are
unhelpful they are killed and what they were going to have to do about the issue going go

Old Major tells the animals, and the very instant our usefulness has come to an end we are
slaughtered with hideous cruelty. (5), as he is giving his speech to the animals . He is the
describing to the animals how their lives end and not have a choice to make, in order to center his
idea that animals lives are miserable. Old Major s feeling towards the topic that he holds about
animals lives is strong because he has had time to understand the meanings that the animals are
given to the humans and disagrees about the miserables lives they live. Thus, Old Major does say
that animals lives are unjustified that he wants to make a rebellion.
Old Major closes his speech by saying that they should do a rebellion. Old Major tells the
animals, That is my message to you, comrades: Rebellion! I do not know when the that
Rebellion will come, . . . sooner or later justice will be done, (7) that they will have their justice.
He makes his point that in order for the animals to have justice they will have to rebel against
Jones. This effect cause the feeling of the rest of the animals to rise and fight for their equal
society. All in all, Old Major address the fact that they animals should rebel to get their justice made

Fermentation is undoubtedly the most important stage to achieve the taste of the beer, because
while sugar transformation into alcohol and carbonic gas takes place, yeast produces other
substances in very small quantities, which are responsible for the aroma and flavor of the beer. The
development of chemical analysis procedures that took place during recent years allowed a more
comprehensive understanding about beer composition. It is therefore during the fermentation
process that the beer style is created. This process normally will take a month.
These two steps are shown by figure 1.
Figure 1
The packaging process occurs after the fermentation. The beer flows to the keg, canning, and
bottling lines when it our of the government cellar. There are five canning lines, three bottling
lines, and a keg line can be run in the Winston Salem brewery. The capacity for can lines is 1300
cans per minute, for bottle lines is 900 bottles per minute, and for keg line is 340 half barrels per
hour. For the five can lines, all the brands of beer can be canned at the same time, or one brand
of beer can be canned with two different types at the same time. For three bottle lines, different
bottle shapes and sizes can be filled at the same time, and new bottles and returnable bottles can
be separated when filling and packaging. The packaging process also can be divided into two
steps: 1. filling and capping and 2. pasteurizing. The packaging will

fidel castro Essay
The United States of America is a country that believes in democracy and has unfavorable ties with
communist countries. The United States has tried for decades to improve relations with the
countries that don t practice democracy.
History shows disagreements between the United States and dictators of these irreverent countries,
disagreements that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. The most recent of these
confrontations involved three countries.
United States of America, Cuba and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic
(USSR). Fidel Castro is a Cuban revolutionary, who took control of Cuba in 1959 and established a

A complete break in diplomatic relations occurred in 1961. On April 17 of that year, anti Castro
exiles supported and trained by the United States government, landed an invasion force in the Bay
of Pigs in southern Cuba. Ninety of the invaders were killed, and some 1200 were captured.
President Castro announced
May 17 that Cuba would exchange prisoners taken at the Bay of Pigs for 500 U.S. bulldozers.
Negotiations broke down June 30, and Castro declared himself a
Marxist Leninist on December 2. He announced formation of a united party to bring communism to
Cuba. Relations between the United States and Cuba grew still more perilous in the fall of 1962,
when the United States discovered
Soviet supplied missile installations in Cuba. United States President, John F.
Kennedy announced a naval blockade of the island. Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev,

The Social Consequences Of Heteronormativity
As children, we are indoctrinated into the social construct of heteronormativity. Based on our
biological sex at birth, we are given blue or pink clothes, play princesses or superheroes, and are
told either, cross your legs and sit like a lady or act like a man and stop crying . As adults, we
watch movies and TV shows where the husband comes home from a long day at work to greet his
wife who has just finished making dinner. Heteronormativityrefers to those norms related to gender
and sexuality which keep in place patriarchy and compulsory heterosexuality as well as other
systems and ideologies related to power (Sharma 2009). Gay, lesbian, queer, homosexual, agender,
androgynous, bigender, bisexual, butch, femme, dyke, stud, lipstick lesbian, gender fluid; There
are a seemingly endless terministic screens used to label women who love women, but they all
come down to one meaning, we aren t normal. Even if any given terminology is a reflection of
reality, by its very nature as a terminology it is a selection of reality; and to this extent it must also
function as a deflection of reality (Burke 1968). Viewing lesbians through heteronormative gender
roles oversimplifies complex identities into false dichotomies.
When I was around five years old my step sister, Kelly, came to live with us. I thought that she

Analysis Of Growing Up In Eleven By Sandra Cisneros
Growing up is something that everyone goes through. As one grows older they feel differently
about growing up. A young kid wants to grow up and going out into the real world, then that
same kid grows up a bit and faces the reality of life and doesn t want to grow old, but instead
wants to go back, the last phase is just accepting the fact that this is happening no matter what.
The first stage is wanting to grow up and looking forward to it. The story Eleven by Sandra
Cisneros shows the perspective of an eleven year old going through a tough situation: I wish I
was anything but eleven, because I want today to be far away already, far away like a runaway
balloon, like a tiny o in the sky, so tiny you have to close your eyes to see it (248). This little girl
has no idea what growing up is, she believes that being older will fix everything, this shows how
differently someone thinks when they re younger and more naive. Cisneros says, Today I wish I
was one hundred and two instead of eleven because if I was one hundred and two I d have
known what to say when Mrs. Price put the red sweater on my desk (247). Furthermore, Because
she s old and the teacher she s right and I m not (Cisneros 247). The little girl says this and it
applies to younger kids like herself because they ve lived their whole life listening to what adults
say that they have a tendency to just think they are right. The poem On Turning Ten by Billy
Collins says, It seems only yesterday I used to believe, there was nothing under my skin but light
/ If you cut me I could shine (29 32). This ten year old boy explains how he thought he was
invincible and nothing was impossible. The picture Growing Up by Hannah Galvin shows 7
figures at different stages in their life, the third figure shows a little boy who is excited and
running with his face up. This shows how he did everything with his head held high no matter what.
This first stage gives someone the innocence that makes them a little kid, and allows them to have
an imagination. The second stage is actually going out into the real world and realizing that
growing up isn t something to be excited for. Collins further states, But now I am mostly at the
window/ watching the late afternoon

system by the student council chaplain. The Santa Fe s Independent School District violated the
Lemon test law by allowing student led prayers to be recited on the public address system, which
was not furthering the student s education, they were not acting neutrally toward religion, which is a
distinct part of the Lemon Test rule, and they violated the rule against government and religion

Apology In A Sorry State
In A Sorry State, the Canadian government s attempt to make several apologies is thoughtful;
however, simply uttering the words, I m sorry cannot undue the trauma of the past. The apology
is more for the people giving them, rather than for the actual victim. As Stephan Harper
apologized for Canada s colonial past, he said: it is the core of Canadian soul (Miyagawa 2012).
This simply portrays that the government is apologizing because it is Canadian of them to do so.
This is a limitation of an apologyas it creates an overly celebratory image of the government (Farley
2017). Instead of making the apology about the Aboriginal peoples, it focuses on the graciousness
of the government.

Understanding Variable Shortening And The Himalayan Thrust...
Understanding variable shortening rates in the Himalayan thrust belt of Sikkim and western Bhutan
using various thermochronologic data.
An NSF proposal written by
Sameer Baral
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
University of Houston, Houston, TX, USA
Introduction Crustal shortening is the primary result of a continent continent collision in the
orogenic thrust belts. Several techniques have been applied to understand the shortening rates in
active collisional belts like the Himalayas. These estimates have been derived by Global
Positioning System (GPS) for shorter timescales and balanced cross sections for longer time scales
(Long et al., 2012). The preliminary studies conducted in the eastern Himalayas using GPS states
that modern shortening rates are in the order of ~15 20 mm/yr to 20 12 mm/yr (Bilhan et al., 1997;
Larson et al., 1999; Banerjee and Burgmann, 2002; Zhang et al., 2004). Using balanced cross
section techniques DeCelles et al., (2002) and Long et al., (2011b) estimated that close to 400 670
km of crustal shortening has been accommodated in eastern thrust belt during 23 25 Ma range,
giving the shortening rate of 16 29 mm/yr. Both of these techniques provides shortening rates that
are quite similar and shows the motion along basal dГЁcollement have been constant through time
(Herman et al., 2010). While the shortening rates seems constant throughout the Himalayan thrust
belt, petrologic, geochronologic, and structure studies suggest

Sex, Lies, And Conversation
Sex, Lies, and Conversation: Why Is It So Hard For Men and Women to Talk to Each Other? In
Sex, Lies, and Conversations: Why Is It So Hard For Men and Women to Talk to Each Other? the
author, Deborah Tannen, argues that both genders have different ways of communicating between
each other. She states that males are more to the point and want to find the solution quickly, rather
than talk it out and get all of the details about it like females do. She starts out by using an
anecdote about a couple that she met in Virginia. She commented that the husband had done all
the talking at the meeting and that usually the women complain that their husband does not really
say all that much. He then gestured to his wife and stated that she did all the talking at home. He
also stated that if she didn t keep the conversation going at home after he got off work that they
would just sit in silence for the evening. (Tannen 50) She writes about this to show us that she is a
down to earth person by using the pathos and ethos behind the story to make us trust what she is
saying is true and helpful to a relationship. She states that she has done some research of her own
to help back her writings up. First, she researches the Linguistic Battle of the Sexes (Tannen 51).
She implies that she is not the first person to see these tendencies in the two genders. She talks
about another psychologist that has done some research by a Stanford University Alumni Eleanor
Maccoby. She states that

Silas rise from poverty was not fully morally sound though, notwithstanding the fact that the
product he made his money with was one that was virtually handed to him and that sold itself. In
spite of these facts, at an earlier stage in the business, Silas had taken up a partner, Mr. Rogers, to
help him financially, and then forced him out before he could make any profit. This move appears
to be the first immoral business choice in the career of Silas Lapham. It forces him to be dishonest
not only to himself, but to his wife, by driving him to lie about and cover up his inner feelings
about what he had done. Although he states that he has a clear conscience concerning the whole
affair, he cannot so much as speak directly to the man during a chance meeting on the street. He
shies away from the awkward situation entirely, leaving his wife to contend with the betrayed
former partner.
Silas attempts to reconcile his deceiving Rogers by calling it a business chance, but his wife refutes
by stating,

Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Boost Transverter
The conventional DC DC converters have the disadvantages of operating at high duty cycle, high
switch voltage stress and high diode peak current. Non isolated high step up converter overcomes
this drawback. This converter reduces voltage stress on switch by using clamped capacitor circuit
which is helpful to reduce the conduction losses by using low power rated components and
efficiency will increase. Single switch is used in the non isolated high step up converter, thus reduce
the entire cost of the converter. The energy stored in leakage inductance of coupled inductoris

  • 2. Reflection Of A Look At The Washed Ashore Sculpture Exhibit This semester I attended the Washed Ashore Sculpture Exhibit. It is located on the campus of Iowa State University in the Reiman Gardens. This event is related to Humanities because exhibit houses many art sculptures made of trash. The trash is plastics and other house hold items that have washed ashore in Oregon and Northern California. The purpose of the exhibit is to raise awareness to the damages of plastic to the environment, what plastic can do to animals and ecosystems, demonstrate how nonbiodegradable plastic is, and how much plastic there is in the ocean. The exhibit is set up so that right as you walk it the butterfly exhibit entrance is off to your left, and the research facility is off to your right. In between them is a hallway filled with Jellyfish made of plastic water bottles and caps and other trash. At the end of the hallway is a pair of doors that leads to a greenhouse that a bunch of plants and a large jellyfish. When you go outside, there is a pathway that leads to each of the gardens and ten sculptures that is featured inside the Washed Ashore Sculpture Exhibit. I had four favorite sculptures in the gardens. One of my favorite pieces was the Polar Bear. Right as you approached the entrance to the park, you are greeted by the polar bear. The polar bear represented the results of global warming and loss of land for polar bears to live and hunt on. Another was the Giant Jellyfish. Inside the greenhouse there was a giant Jellyfish hanging from the ceiling. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He was a founding father, he wrote the Declaration of Independence and serve as president for 2 terms from 1801 to 1809. During his first term as president, there was speculation of him having a relationship with Sally Hemingsa slave. As of today, it is still unknown if it was true and if he was the father of 6. For two centuries there has been disagreement with this controversy however, there has been DNA test on Thomas Jefferson s male descendants and Sally Hemings relatives and the real answer is still undiscovered. In September of 1802, a political journalist James T. Callender published an article. In which he claimed Thomas Jefferson had a sexual relationship with Sally Hemmings a slave and even had children. Being the president the article spread all around quickly. Sally Hemings was a slave at Monticello. She was the half sister of Thomas Jefferson s wife Martha Jefferson, her father had a relationship with Sally Hemings mother and had her. She was described by other slaves as light skinned and could have passed as white. Hemings became Jefferson s property by an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the DNA test scientist noted that there is less than one percent probability is due to chance. Also Sally Hemings was not freed after Jefferson s death. Martha, Jefferson s daughter permitted Sally Hemings to leave in 1826 not long after Thomas Jefferson s death. • 4. 1950 s Double Helix In the 1950 s many scientists were trying to study and find the structure of DNA. Early before the 1950 s the work of pioneers had discovered DNA. Scientists began to wonder what else is the DNA made up of and what is it s structure. Many competed to discover the DNA. It just so happens in 1953 two men succeeded in their goal. James Watson and Francis Crickmade a mark in the history of science. On this day February 28, 1953 Watson and Crick made the discovery of a double helix in the DNA. Studying DNA is understanding how genes process within new cells. It helps discover the genetic code and protein synthesis. DNA has a complex structure simple enough to be discovered. The importance of the double helix is made up of the shape of a ladder ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They shared some of the same ideas on how they could solve the problem. The two men had very different personalities, they respected each other s work and became very good friends. Through this friendship Watson and Crick came up with an idea of testing their theory of how the DNA molecule might fit together by using stick ball models. Even though their first attempt failed, they didn t give up. In addition to the stick ball models, Watson and Crick used x ray pictures to give them ideas for the structure. There were two scientists that were experts in taking these x ray pictures. Watson and Crick used pictures taken by Rosaline Franklin and Maurice Wilkins to gain some valuable information. Within two years of starting their study Crick and Watson were able to put together an accurate model of the DNA structure. The double helix model shape would eventually help scientist all over the world learn more about genetics. DNA is composed of nucleotide deoxyribose sugar a phosphate group and four nitrogen. Phosphate and sugar link to form a polymer x ray provided the final clue of DNA. DNA molecule is a double helix shaped of a structure like a twisted ladder. The ladder is formed from pairs of nitrogen bases A, T, C, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Analysis Of Sergio Leone s A Fistfull Of Dollars What could be more quintessentially American than having a national touchstone be reinvented by a foreigner? By the time Sergio Leone began work on A Fistfull of Dollars in 1964, the Western and all of its trappings had been around for nearly a century. Whether it be through literature, film, television, or radio, stories of pitched gun battles and hard fought backwater living in that peculiar period of the untamed American frontier became one of the United States chief cultural exports. Over the course of the Dollars Trilogy of A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More(1965) The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966) in addition to Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) Leone took the trappings of the Western and completely turned the genre on its head in both style and substance. Unlike the saintly heroes of old, Clint Eastwoods Man With No Name was a remorseless killer, only concerned with the gold in his pocket and the poncho on his back. Violence was not as quick and easy as John Ford would lead you to believe: Leone was unafraid to depict violence in full while making it clear that taking the life of another was an ugly and pointless endeavor. Higher notions of heroism and civilization had no place in Leone s world, his characters interested only in enriching themselves or settling the score with their adversaries. Out on a frontier bereft of social structure or authority, Leone s characters shape their own reality with a few well placed dollars and a loaded gun. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Ethical Issues Of Darby s Whistle Blowing Decision Question 4 1.The ethical issues outlined in this case are whether Spc. Darby s whistle blowing decision was correct and if Spc. Sivits s claims of obedience and rule following are sufficient for his decision to not blow the whistle. 2.The fear of repercussions of disobeying military orders should not be an allowable excuse for not whistle blowing. From the utilitarian perspective actions are right insofar as they promote happiness and wrong as they bring the reverse of happiness: pain (Mill, 1910.) The repercussions of disobeying orders would be wrong because it would bring produce the reverse of happiness via pain and privation of pleasure. However, one also assess the situation from the view of Kant that maxims should only be acted on when they can become a universal law (Kant, 1898.) Should everyone not act for of disobeying orders, we can presume that other heinous crimes would go unreported. Returning to Mill we can see how this situation would lead to more pain and privation of pleasure for all of humanity as opposed to a single officer. Therefore, both the utilitarian and deontological perspectives prevent the fear of repercussions from being an allowable excuse for not whistle blowing. 3.Whistleblowing should be praised. From the utilitarian point of view, whistleblowing poses a unique challenge. In either the action to blow the whistle or not there is some reverse happiness or pain produced. In the case of Spc. • 9. Science Should Progress Through Falsification And... Popper believes science should progress through falsification and demarcation as a way to distinguish real scientific theories from pseudoscience. (A. Popper) Falsification is how a scientist should look at a problem they are attempting to solve instead of using existing theories and treating them as scientific laws you should instead try and prove existing theories wrong using emperical evidence to solve the questions being asked. (A. Popper) believes Science keeps moving forward and the only way to progress is to prove existing theories wrong, replacing them with new theories. In contrast verification of theories (attempting to prove a theory right) holds little water with Popper this is because proving a theory right has already been done. All a researcher must do to prove a theory right is duplicate a previous study or experiment and this according to (A. Popper) is not science and is not the advancement of scientific knowledge. Furthermore (A. Popper 4.0 The growth of Human Knowledge) Popper believes science is falsifiable and that their are no true facts. The scientific methoduses a deductive process. However this deductice process does not compare the hypothesis and conclusions with the actual theory. All observations and conclusions are theory based. Discussed previously theories according to Popper should be scrutinized using falsification. Popper has a four step procedure for his view of the deductive process. (A. [ISBN: 978 0 312 26376 8] The Pianist is the story of Wladyslaw Szpilman s experiences leading to up, and throughout the German invasion/occupation of Poland. He writes an emotional autobiography about his trials, and experiences in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. Throughout his journey, Szpilman must attempt to navigate the rapidly changing political and social situation in Warsaw. He gives us an overview (highlighting the important events) of his family s journey from a Jewish family of moderate standing (thanks to his exceptional piano playing) stripped of their possessions, their home, and finally each other. Within all of this turmoil, Szpilman survives every danger and ordeal to document his journey after the Russian Army at the end of World War II liberates Warsaw. Throughout the story, the focus remains limited to what is happening inside the Warsaw Ghetto, and the immediate area in Poland. • 12. The Pros And Cons Of Environmental Pollution Environmental health is your wellbeing of your surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. There things effect your air pollution like carbon monoxide you can get things like asthma. Also there clean water there different type of water depend where you live. Finally there is way to improve your environmental health and those around you. Cars and trucks produce air pollution throughout their life, including pollution emitted during vehicle operation, refueling, manufacturing, and disposal. Additional emissions are associated with the refini ary and secondary pollution. Primary pollution is emitted directly into the atmosphere; secondary pollution results from chemical reactions between pollutants in the atmosphere. The following are the major pollutants from motor vehicles. These particles of soot and metals give smog its murky color. Fine particles less than one tenth the diameter of a human hair pose the most serious threat to human health, as they can penetrate deep into lungs. PM is a direct primary pollution and a secondary pollution from hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxides. Diesel exhaust is a major contributor to PM pollution. This odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas is formed by the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline and is emitted primarily from cars and trucks. When inhaled, CO blocks oxygen from the brain, heart, and other vital organs. Fetuses, newborn children, and people with chronic illnesses are especially susceptible to the effects of CO. Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma your airways are always inflamed. Some reasons for difficulty inserting IV catheters include obesity, veins that roll or blow easily, dark pigmented skin, and dehydration. With the help of modern technology, devices called Accuvein finders have made it a less painful process for patients. The author will discuss how these devices have compared to palpation and inspection on hospitalized patients in the last five years. This paper will focus on three articles that tested the Accuvein finders and the results of each. Accuvein is a device that uses infrared light to illuminate veins (Aulagnier et al., 2014). It has been a preferred method over ultrasound because of its portability and easy training. There are different brands of the vein illuminating devices, such as Vein Locator Universal, which is used at Sharn Anesthesia in Tampa (Aulagnier et al., 2014). A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O Connor Flannery O Connor s Southern Gothic short story, A Good Man is Hard to Find, is one of sudden violence; although, it begins rather uneventful (Kaplan 1). Bailey, his wife, and their children, John Wesley, June Star, and a baby boy, are all looking forward to a trip to Florida. Grandmother, Bailey s mom, wants to go to east Tennessee to see her relatives, not Florida. She uses an article in the newspaper that tells of an escaped criminal, the Misfit, which is headed to Florida to try to persuade her son into not going there. Her attempt at persuading her son fails, and so the adventure begins. While the grandmother and the Misfit are the central figures of Flannery O Connor s short storyA Good Man is Hard to Find, Bailey, John Wesley, and June Star prove to be instrumental characters because they are used to show a change in the mood of the story. O Connor shows the reader through her writings that Bailey plays the role of a father, husband, and son, and he tries to succeed at all of them. He is a man that is portrayed to be strong, protective, and intelligent by the author (Nester 126). Another side of Bailey that rarely comes out but is important to the story is his temper. A Risk Engineering Approach to Project Management Project Management A project is a group activity temporary in nature projected to achieve a desired result, service or product in a unique manner (Chapman, 2007). A project is termed as temporary since it has a set start and finish time period and is undertaken with defined resources and within a set scope. The operations within a project are unique since they do not rely on the routing operations. Rather, a set of operations are designated to meet the desired target. From this understanding, it is deduced that project management will entail the process of meeting the set goals for a particular activity. According to (Chapman, 2007), project management is the strategic deployment of skills, knowledge and techniques to accomplish specific set goals efficiently and effectively. Project management deviates away from normal organization operations to achieve predefined targets. Project management reorients and organizes available resources to meet set goals efficiently within a defined scope the set time period (Chapman, 2007). Project management is divided into five interrelated but, distinctive phases. These phases are: Project initiation; Project planning; Project execution; Project Monitoring and controlling and, Project Termination. The environment falls into this subordinate category because it continues to be pressed and used to benefit the man machine. Stephen Crane s The Red Badge of Courage is full of various symbols that convey different ideas as it follows the journey of a young man named Henry Fleming who joins the army to fight during war. The title, the red badge of courage, is an obvious symbol; however, other symbols also are important in relating the story. Crane uses several symbols in his novelincluding flags, corpses, and the red badge of courageto tell the story and create meaning. In Crane s novel, flags not only symbolize different armies, but they also represent faith and sacrifice. Flags are most often associated with the representation of a country or state. Similarly, Crane uses flags to stand for each the armies that fight during the war in the novel. However, Crane s flags also represent abstract concepts. As adults, we watch movies and TV shows where the husband comes home from a long day at work to greet his wife who has just finished making dinner. Heteronormativityrefers to those norms related to gender and sexuality which keep in place patriarchy and compulsory heterosexuality as well as other systems and ideologies related to power (Sharma 2009). • 45. Analysis Of Growing Up In Eleven By Sandra Cisneros Growing up is something that everyone goes through. As one grows older they feel differently about growing up. A young kid wants to grow up and going out into the real world, then that same kid grows up a bit and faces the reality of life and doesn t want to grow old, but instead wants to go back, the last phase is just accepting the fact that this is happening no matter what. The first stage is wanting to grow up and looking forward to it. The story Eleven by Sandra Cisneros shows the perspective of an eleven year old going through a tough situation: I wish I was anything but eleven, because I want today to be far away already, far away like a runaway balloon, like a tiny o in the sky, so tiny you have to close your eyes to see it (248). This little girl has no idea what growing up is, she believes that being older will fix everything, this shows how differently someone thinks when they re younger and more naive. Cisneros says, Today I wish I was one hundred and two instead of eleven because if I was one hundred and two I d have known what to say when Mrs. Price put the red sweater on my desk (247). Furthermore, Because she s old and the teacher she s right and I m not (Cisneros 247). The little girl says this and it applies to younger kids like herself because they ve lived their whole life listening to what adults say that they have a tendency to just think they are right. The poem On Turning Ten by Billy Collins says, It seems only yesterday I used to believe, there was nothing under my skin but light / If you cut me I could shine (29 32). This ten year old boy explains how he thought he was invincible and nothing was impossible. The picture Growing Up by Hannah Galvin shows 7 figures at different stages in their life, the third figure shows a little boy who is excited and running with his face up. This shows how he did everything with his head held high no matter what. This first stage gives someone the innocence that makes them a little kid, and allows them to have an imagination. The second stage is actually going out into the real world and realizing that growing up isn t something to be excited for. Understanding variable shortening rates in the Himalayan thrust belt of Sikkim and western Bhutan using various thermochronologic data. An NSF proposal written by Sameer Baral Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences University of Houston, Houston, TX, USA Introduction Crustal shortening is the primary result of a continent continent collision in the orogenic thrust belts. Several techniques have been applied to understand the shortening rates in active collisional belts like the Himalayas. These estimates have been derived by Global Positioning System (GPS) for shorter timescales and balanced cross sections for longer time scales (Long et al., 2012). The preliminary studies conducted in the eastern Himalayas using GPS states that modern shortening rates are in the order of ~15 20 mm/yr to 20 12 mm/yr (Bilhan et al., 1997; Larson et al., 1999; Banerjee and Burgmann, 2002; Zhang et al., 2004). Using balanced cross section techniques DeCelles et al., (2002) and Long et al., (2011b) estimated that close to 400 670 km of crustal shortening has been accommodated in eastern thrust belt during 23 25 Ma range, giving the shortening rate of 16 29 mm/yr. Both of these techniques provides shortening rates that are quite similar and shows the motion along basal dГЁcollement have been constant through time (Herman et al., 2010). In Sex, Lies, and Conversations: Why Is It So Hard For Men and Women to Talk to Each Other? the author, Deborah Tannen, argues that both genders have different ways of communicating between each other. She states that males are more to the point and want to find the solution quickly, rather than talk it out and get all of the details about it like females do. She starts out by using an anecdote about a couple that she met in Virginia. She commented that the husband had done all the talking at the meeting and that usually the women complain that their husband does not really say all that much. He then gestured to his wife and stated that she did all the talking at home. He also stated that if she didn t keep the conversation going at home after he got off work that they would just sit in silence for the evening. (Tannen 50) She writes about this to show us that she is a down to earth person by using the pathos and ethos behind the story to make us trust what she is saying is true and helpful to a relationship. She states that she has done some research of her own to help back her writings up. First, she researches the Linguistic Battle of the Sexes (Tannen 51).
