The Global Pursuit Of Economic Development Since The End...
In Global Political Economy, Chapter 11 discusses the global pursuit of economic development since
the end of the Second World War (219). In a nutshell, this analysis involves the account and summary
of some of the information that has been previously presented in earlier chapters of this book. Mainly,
the process of industrialization in Great Britain as well as the United States is noted in the introduction
to the chapter.
Afterwards, the authors proceed to define the term development using quotes and statements from a
few other authors. But, the central idea of development, no matter how the definition may be worded,
takes into account the themes of process and condition, or the change of condition. In addition, when
regarding the immediate era after the war, development relied on economic growth of a country
measured by its Gross National Product (GNP) (221). The Gross National Product, according to
Encyclopedia Britannica, is the total market value of the final goods and services produced by a nation
s economy during a specific period of time (usually a year), computed before allowance is made for
the depreciation or consumption of capital used in the process of production (Encyclopedia
Britannica).
The timeline of development for countries worldwide after WWII is then clarified. Many nations were
considered underdeveloped , backward , or most commonly Third World . Eventually, countries in the
southern hemisphere became known as the Global South , identifying

Amelia Earhart
Does anyone actually know what happened to Amelia Earhart? Growing up, Amelia Earhart was
always very outgoing and brave and liked the outdoors. She took an interest in flying at a young age,
but no one knew she would be the first women to fly an airplane. The record setting Amelia Earhart
and her hard life s work ended when she took her last attempted flight around the world.
Amelia Earhart s childhood was full of adventure. She was born on July 24th (Earhart, Amelia) in
Atchison, Kansas. As a child, Amelia was very adventurous and spent her time riding horses and
exploring the outdoors (Stevenson 1). People back then didn t think that girls should do things that
boys were supposed to do and the other way around too. Yet she did many things ... Show more

She set off into the skies with Fred Noonan, an experienced navigator (Buchanan 10), in June 1937 for
her flight around the world (Amelia Earhart). If she made it all the way around the world and back on
this trip, she would be the first women ever to do so, but this was a very tough task that takes a lot of
bravery. For nearly a month, Earhart and Noonan flew from country to country, lofting over oceans,
mountain ranges, deserts, towns, and cities. At every stop, tremendous crowds welcomed them.
(Buchanan 10) This was one of the most exciting things in that time period because nothing like this
had been done before. But it didn t go that smoothly for long. When flying over the Pacific Ocean,
Earhart and Noonan were searching for their next fuel stop. Flying through the rain clouds, Earhart
and Noonan could not find Howland (Buchanan 10) They had to stop soon for fuel or risk going down
into the ocean. She and her plane disappeared somewhere near Howland Island in the Central Pacific
Ocean on July 2nd, 1937 (Earhart, Amelia), in which they got they got the last radio signal from
Earhart and her plane. The world waited with fascination as search teams from the United States Army
and Navy, along with the Japanese navy, converging on the scene. (Amelia Earhart) There are many
theories that people think happened to Amelia Earhart, but no one actually knows when, how, or why

The Great Depression s Impact Socially, Globally, Politically, and Economically
Economists continue to study the causes of the Great Depression because they still disagree on what
specifically caused it. Many theories have been advanced over the years, but there remains no single,
universally agreed upon explanation as to what the root cause was. However, many experts agree that
banking played a crucial and single handedly one of the most important roles into what caused the
Great Depression. Furthermore, Americans lost nearly 20% of their deposits when the banks failed.
Since there was no FDIC yet, and most state deposit insurance schemes had shut down already, this
meant that everyday folks lost their savings.
The effects of the Depression were felt around the world in the social, global, political, and economic,
lives of nations and individuals; some of the social and global impacts include; Between 1929 and
1933, the quantity of goods and services produced in the United States fell by one third, the
unemployment rate soared to 25 percent of the labor force, the stock market lost 80 percent of its
Steinberg 2 value and some 7,000 banks failed. When the stock market crashed in 1929, overnight,
tens of thousands of customers began to withdraw their deposits. However, the banks with no money
to lend and loans having to return on them, the banking crises started to excavate rapidly, causing

Professional Plumbing Contractors
Are you in need of a professional plumbing contractor for your business? What you may not know is a
reliable and professional pluming contractor is not the same as a residential plumber. There may be the
same types of pipes, but a lot more is involved.
A professional plumbing contractor in Alameda needs to have special tools, training, experience, and a
set of required classifications. Fixing a clogged toilet in a bathroom will be the same as fixing a clog
in an office building. However, the main difference is the scale of the work. The preparation needed in
an office building, retail establishment, or other large building will be different.
The size of the building is typically the main difference between residential and commercial plumbing
jobs. There may be numerous floors, different types of problems, and time involved. Any professional

Buildings with multiple floors means water pressure will be extremely important. Gravity will have an
impact on how the pipes in a building function. The repair techniques that are used may vary, based on
the nature of the problem. This can also have an impact on the tools being used by reliable and
professional plumbing contractors in Alameda. Multiple floors also affect the time needed to complete
a repair.
Time Factors
The time a professional plumbing contractor needs to complete a job is longer to do than a residential
plumber. A residential jobs can typically be completed in a day or up to a week based on the work that
is needed. Some commercial jobs can easily take a month or more to complete. Commercial plumbers
are used to this type of schedule. An estimate will typically be provided to the client so they will know

The Space Is Empty
The space is empty, only a shadowy figure can be seen. Their bright silver eyes pierce into my soul. A
mischievous smile is drawn upon its face, sending chills down my spine. Their long curvy horns are
attached to each side of its dark smoky face. Their long tail is divided into three wispy strands. It
approaches slowly, as if waiting for an opportunity to strike. I try to escape, but my legs are under a
wave of fear. The figure is closing its distance, raising its arm out towards me. I prepare for the worst,
but no attack came in contact. Instead, it held out its shadowy hand.
Do you wish to find the truth?

The room is shaped in a large circle, containing stacks of broken canvases and papers drenched in dark
liquid. Small waterfalls of black and white flow into small pools. The remaining waterfalls are empty,
only small drops fill the basins. To the side of it are an array of ruined art utensils, with gallons of
black water overflowing its container. Long marks are carved into the doors in the back of the room. It
was every artists worst nightmare.
Now where was it...? It searches through the piles of canvases and papers, tossing each one to the side.
While it searches for whatever it s looking for, I explore the rest of the room in hopes remembering
how I ended up in this place. More importantly a way out. I open some of the drawers to discover
more broken utensils and crumbled pieces of paper. I open some of the crumbled papers in hope for a
note or journal entry, only find sketches of people. How can someone waste all these materials...? I
close the drawers, feeling sorry about the misused materials. Moving on from the drawers, I open the
nearby doors. Art books, papers, pencils, markers, everything is stacked up on the dusty shelfs in an
organized way. How much supplies does an artist need...? I sigh in defeat, leaning against the wall.
Not a single hint of a door with a neon sign saying EXIT.
Aha! I finally found you!

Challenges And Advantages And Disadvantages Of Matrix...
There are many types of structures that an organization might have, each of them comes with its own
set of advantages and disadvantages. Let us look at the benefits and drawbacks of three (or rather,
five) of the more modern structures. Matrix organizations One of the biggest challenges for employees
in a matrix organization is the fact that they have to report to multiple managers. With employees
directly reporting to two or more supervisors, these supervisors need to be highly coordinated with
one another to make sure that they re giving consistent orders. Otherwise, employees may be given
orders from different managers that are very difficult to follow in unison. Even worse, orders from
different managers can outright conflict. Employees can t follow these orders because they re mutually
exclusive. This causes ambiguity and confusion as to what the employee should do. This problem can
be avoided with high levels of communication and coordination between department managers and
project managers though. If these managers can stay on the same page, they can have a much clearer
picture of where to lead employees and they can put up a unified front. In that way, instructions from
either manager that a given employee reports to can give orders consistent with the orders given by the
other manager, and the employee will be able to follow the lead of both managers simultaneously.
There are clearly challenges in leading a matrix organization, as well as challenges in working

Essay about Mass Media
Before fast spreading technology was introduced, politicians had limited ways of gathering supporters
for their political agenda. Today, technology is used to spread a lot of information to many different
people around the world. Online websites play a vital role in spreading political agendas throughout
the masses of the country. Through the technological changes, including Facebook, Twitter, and Rock
the Vote, political agendas are beginning to spread through demographics that were harder to target
before the Internet became easily accessible. These demographics include men and women eighteen
years of age and older. Over 500 million people are active on Facebook, a social networking site
where anyone can voice their opinions and ideas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Today, people always have access to the Internet on the go, and The beauty of Twitter is that it can be
portable, allowing you to tweet from your cell phone. So when critical news breaks, your elected
official can keep you apprised of the latest developments (Orr). Since statuses and updates come
directly from the politician or celebrity themselves, Twitter is a reliable source to people and it is not
lost in translation. Although more people are tweeting every day, older generations that cannot keep up
are lacking in publicizing themselves in a political format. The negative aspect on Twitter is that the
relative newness of social networks like Twitter, make social media strategy a nebulous affair for
campaigns who aren t blessed with an intuitive grasp of these fast paced platforms (James). Because
social media is such a new concept in today s society, many political campaign managers are still
figuring it out how to use it to their advantage in a positive way. If the candidates for office who are
not used to today s technology cannot get with the fast paced changing times of today, why would
citizens want them running their country? In an effort to attract younger audiences, celebrities such as
Madonna, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Janet Jackson have been

In this journal I learned or had reinforced: Going about my day I need to pay attention to my gestures
and simple hand movements when I m around others. Especially when I m trying to make a good first
impression on someone. Avoiding signals that would imply laziness, nervousness, anxiety, or shyness
are key to being successful at the first impression. Some observations made about Cortez in the short
time given include he is a very outspoken individual, highly confident in himself, and shows maturity
in his actions. He has his close friends he sticks around, but he isn t afraid to branch out occasionally
and he also takes a stand for ideas that he is certain about to insure others are informed of his
knowledge. Not knowing anything about him academically, it seems it could be inferred he does well
with his studies. It was overheard in class that he had a multiple classes with Mrs. Minton so going out

Media and Television
The V Chip and TV Parental Guidelines
During the last decade, media ratings have been used as a means of addressing concerns about
objectionable or potentially harmful media content. Politicians, entertainment industry leaders, and
parents alike have turned to media ratings as a middle ground to such concerns somewhere between
direct government censorship and not addressing the issue at all. While movie ratings have been in
place for several decades, there was a trend in adoption of a rating system for media such as
television. The advent of content blocking categories technologies, such as the V chip, which requires
some form of attendant rating system to be useful, has furthered spurred this trend. There is ... Show

History Of The Netherlands During The 17th Century
In this essay a brief introduction to the history of the Netherlands in the 17th century will be offered,
including an overview of commerce, politics, social life, religion and art. The composition will segue
to a review of the most popular Dutch still life artists of the 17th century, and then transition to the
specific genre of floral still life. This naturally leads to a consideration of techniques of the Dutch
artists of that era and a succinct study of several of the most famous Dutch floral still lives from the
1600s. The thesis of this investigation is floral still lives became a popular specialty genre of 17th

At one time or another many a nation has led the world militarily, economically, scientifically,

phenomenon that grew from a variety of factors, including the 30 year war that caused the division of
the Netherlands into North and South, and gave the Dutch Republic their independence. Amsterdam, a

Difference Between Altruism And Altruism
INTRODUCTION
Our generation today focuses much more on personal gain, prioritizing themselves for pleasure and
self enjoyment. We are in a generation where good name is no more preferred or precious than gold,
rather, money is a good name and more precious than a good one, where love for one self, vanity, and
giving importance on earthly things counts as a way of having success by pursuing what is best for us
and for our loved ones. The Me Generation only shows that people give so much gratitude and
admiration to themselves, and that their concentration is self centered and egoistic. This kind of
attitude leads people to care less about the social, political, economic and environmental aspects of our
lives. Today s generation focuses on acquiring worldly things by having so much money, power, and
fame, whereas the idea of having concern with other people in the society is starting to disappear. The
I syndrome is placing ourselves before others; a situation whereby people seek their own interests and
needs to satisfy themselves, families, relatives and those close to them first before others. Regardless
of the fact that there are people that are into the I syndrome, there still exists an act of being concerned
about other people s happiness called Altruism . Altruism, in contrast with the I syndrome, is an
unselfish concern for other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

altruism consists of true selflessness and that, not all pro social acts are fully altruistic. Perhaps, this is
the reason why some people could not set apart altruism from egoism. Pure and absolute altruism can
be found once a person fully recognizes a selfless act from an act that is self beneficial and

Parenting Styles And Family Relationships
Parenting styles have been researched in many different journals and their role in the promotion of
healthy child attachment to family, friends and social settings. In particular this review will focus on
parenting styles and their correlation to parent child attachment. The review will focus on the four
main parenting styles authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and neglect and examine the
effectiveness of these parenting styles on parent child attachment. Then the review will further
examine these parenting styles on themes that emerged throughout the literature reviewed. The themes
are: the child s perception of parenting styles, family dynamic, psychological effects and children with
health issues. After examining the literature the main overarching conclusion is that authoritative
parenting is the most satisfactory parenting style in all of the reviewed literature and that authoritarian
and permissive parenting reflect negative parenting styles and don t promote positive parent child
attachment. Family Dynamic Parenting styles and family dynamics have been correlated in a study by
Matejevic, Todorovic, Jovanovic (2014) where they examine the correlation between balanced family
systems and authoritative parenting and unbalanced family systems and the appearance of
authoritarian or permissive parenting styles (Matejevic, Todorovic Jovanovic 2014 p. 433). The
research examines family systems with two variables which focus on the cohesion and flexibility of a

so, under the same law, was interference of celebrity willful and intentional when celebrity did not

contract with a production company breached the contract between the 16 year old and the production
company, when celebrity was not aware of the latter contract s exclusive term, and celebrity knew the
production company had contracted many artists in the past, even though celebrity knew such contract
existed? B. Also, under the same law, does celebrity induce a production company when celebrity said
the songs were studio ready, could beat the August deadline, could start recording immediately, and
negotiated better terms? BRIEF ANSWERS 1. Yes. When a 16 year old enters to unenforceable
contract with a production company, such contract is valid at a sixteen year old s election. 2. Probably
not. The test for whether celebrity s interference was willful and intentional requires that celebrity has
knowing inducement. A. The facts mentioned above, are likely to persuade a court to hold that
celebrity did not know or should have known his contract with the production company breached the

Analysis Of Shakespeare s The Winter s Tale
Though the idea that women should be subservient is pervasive in Renaissance literature, Shakespeare
challenges this concept in The Winter s Tale by providing evidence to the contrary.
His female characters are able to gain power using different techniques according to their situations.
However, these methods vary greatly between the court of the shepherd in Bohemia and Leontes court
in Sicilia. While women in the royal court gain influence through their use of effective rhetoric,
Shakespeare describes that Perdita s power in the shepherd s court stems mostly from her beauty.
From this juxtaposition, Shakespeare claims that women in a lower class setting are empowered by
their appearance while women in an upper class setting use language to affect change. Furthermore,
Shakespeare also expresses his contention that men believe in an opposite system of empowerment
according to their social class. He argues that gentlemen associate power with appearance and view
rhetoric as unimportant while lower class men put more emphasis on language as a means of
empowerment. Overall, Shakespeare provides an argument that women are empowered through
different methods depending on their socioeconomic standing. Conversely, Shakespeare also expresses
the notion that men do not follow the same pattern as women.
Shakespeare conveys his belief that women gain influence in the royal court through the use of
language by displaying Paulina s ability to control men using her speech. After Hermione

Paper On Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking (January 1942 Present)
Few minds of this century have had an impact like that of Stephen Hawking. His discoveries and work
have expanded the forefront of knowledge with a likeness to that of Einstein and Newton. Despite the
clear adversity Hawking has faced, his achievements have been nothing shore of extraordinary. His
work on the understanding of space, time, and the origins of the universe has set the golden standard
for theories on the universes beginnings and mysteries, proving a staple teaching of modern education
which we may take for granted. Born January 8, 1942 in Oxford, England Stephen William Hawking
was not quite the extraordinary mind that he is known as today (Witherbee 1). He was the son of
Frank and Isabella Hawking, who were of modest means and were the first among their own families
to make more of themselves; Frank was the first to attend college, graduating from Oxford with his
degree in medicine (Eicher 2). Both parents knew the importance of education and adventure, pushing
their children to strive for excellence and do better for themselves than they had (Witherbee 1).

How Does Alison Bechdel Use The Labyrinth In Fun Home
In Fun Home, the author, Alison Bechdel uses Greek myths to allude to her relationship with her
father, Bruce, and the overarching theme of discovering and coping with their sexuality for both
Alison and Bruce. The myth of Daedalus infamous labyrinth was built to imprison the horrible
Minotaur, and the story of his son Icarus s death due to his father s desire to escape his prison.
Throughout the entire graphic novel, Bechdel intertwines references to these myths to reinforce the
turmoil within herself and her father, relating each of them to the mythical characters. The roles are
not set; there are times when Alison and Bruce represent different characters within the myth,
sometimes even playing two roles simultaneously. Alison uses the ... Show more content on

Or just disappointed by the design failure? (12). Alison assumes that Bruce cares more about how she
dresses, and how his house looks than about her. This leads into the use of the next myth, the myth of
the labyrinth, as it suggests that Bruce plays the role of Daedalus more than Alison. The most
prominent example of this is when Bechdel relates her house and how it s cared for to Daedalus
greatest feat of architecture. Early on Bruce is referenced as the Daedalus of décor (6), and performs
like Daedalus, with dazzling displays of artfulness (9). When Alison was a child, she felt herself to be
someone trapped in the labyrinth, slowly inching their way towards death, and impossible to escape
(12). As the story moves forward, Alison begins to realize that she isn t the one stuck in the labyrinth,
but it is Bruce himself. He built his mansion in a similar manner to the labyrinth; it demands fear,
intimidation to its attention to detail, and quite literally the ability to act as a labyrinth (20). In this
metaphor as Bruce as Daedalus, that means Alison plays the Minotaur, as by making Alison act and
dress a certain way, and always demanding the best care for his house, Bruce traps Alison within his

Major Gifts Essay
Securing major gifts is important to almost every organization (Hodge, n.d., p.1). These gifts assist
organizations in ensuring the success of both annual and capital campaigns (Hodge, n.d., p.1). They
not only account for most of the donation to a campaign, but they can also serve as a lead gift, which
gets other people interested in donating to the cause. Without major gifts, organizations would be
doomed, therefore organizations need to ensure that they have the staff, resources, and training in
place to allow for successful solicitations.
If I was asked to make a major gift solicitation next week, I would feel very nervous. As a historically
shy individual, conversing with others in an articulate manner has always been a struggle of ... Show

After a lot of preparation and practice, I will no longer need the script, and I will be able to approach
the solicitation with confidence.
To enhance my confidence even further, having a relationship with the potential benefactor would be
ideal. At this stage in the relationship, most of my shyness will no longer be evident, as I would know
the potential benefactor very well. After gaining an adequate level of confidence and comfort to be
able to successfully solicit the major gift I would arrange a meeting with the potential benefactor.
In setting up the meeting, I would be sure to express that the purpose of the meeting is for us to, invite
their philanthropic support for an important organizational project (Hodge, n.d., p.12). Also, the ideal
meeting location would either the home of the potential benefactor or the donor s place of business,
whichever potential benefactor is more comfortable with (Hodge, n.d., p.12).
At the meeting, we will begin with casual conversation as a way to show our interest in the potential
benefactor, but to also calm some of my nerves. After a bit of conversation, we will introduce the
reason for the meeting (Dove, n.d., p.11). First, we will clearly explain the project and the benefits that
their support will provide our clients, along with some of our personal stories/commitments that
highlight our passion for the cause (Hodge, n.d., p. 13). Throughout our

Five Themes Of Geography
Over the course of the centuries maps have been used to find locations all over the world. They have
evolved and to become more advanced, thanks to technology. Of course, there are specific ways to use
a map such as basic components. Basic components include a compass rose which indicates the
cardinal directions. Legends is the key where symbols are used to help find a point on the map, or in
other words, lead the way. A scale can range from as far as a continent to as close as a house. All these
components are important while using a map. The most accurate way to represent the world is through
map projection. There are different types of map projections like Mercator Projection and Robinson
Projection. Mercator Projections is more accurate in shapes and shows representations bigger than it
really is. Robinson Projection on the other hand is more accurate in both size and shape makes it

The Five Themes of Geography Every place in the world has different ways of using their location.
Where I live, I usually use relative location because everything is linked. For example, my house is
only 3 blocks away from my school. Or in other words it takes me only 10 minutes to get to school.
Another example would be, the closest store is only one street away. Near the store is the gas station
which also makes it close to my house. It is easy to reach any place at any given time. There are many
things that make a place unique, the environment, culture, government structure, economic activities,
and much more. Mauritania is very big and vast, but also empty. Only a small part of it holds human
activity, and the rest is just an empty desert. Many places in the world ressemble my country
especially in Africa. Libya, Egypt, and Sudan, for example, are all covered in desert and also follow
the Islamic religion. Mongolia and Namibia also relate to Mauritania by having a large amount of
land, low population density and poor economic

Introduction
In 1982, the Justice department ordered the separation of ATT into local subsidiaries. MCI was one of

Analysis of External Financing Needs for MCI from 1983 to 1989
Please see Exhibit 1 and Exhibit 2 MCI s external needs will keep increasing over the next few years

o Cost of debt in this case is 12.5% though MCI can raise $ 100 million more with this option in
comparison to option (a) above. Servicing this debt would be a significant drain on the cash flow. o
Please see Exhibit 3. (c) $600 million Convertible offering @ 7.625% 20 year with conversion at 54
per share o Using this option MCI can raise $ 100 million more than option (b) at 4.88% lower rate of
interest. It also gives MCI an option to convert it to equity once the stock price reaches 54 (it is
currently 47). Based on previous convertible offerings (As per exhibit 6 of case, 1978, 1979, 1980,
1981 and 1982), MCI has been converting it to equity within 18 months because of its high growth. As
higher growth is projected for the next few years (Exhibit 9 of case), MCI is expected to convert this
$600 million offering to equity, thereby reducing its leverage. o This option allows to finance its
current activities and match capital inflows with expected investment outlays in the near future. It also
allows MCI the option to eliminate the cash flow drain from servicing the debt once the stock price
increases. o As per Exhibit 3 attached here, this offering will provide capital to meet the external
financing needs for 1983.

Taiwan Taxi Icall System
Executive Summary With its great success in Singapore, a GPS based system like the iCall seemed
like the perfect fit for Taiwan Taxi. The company had plans of expanding its membership to 20,000
and believed the iCall would help it achieve this goal. Unfortunately, the iCall did not bring the
success that Taiwan Taxi hoped it would which left management questioning why the system worked
so well in one country and not the other. The answer to this lies in the cultural differences and a lack
of understanding of the Taiwan labor force that is currently working in the taxi industry. In order to
successfully implement the iCall in Taiwan, management needs to tie value to the system in order to
gain support from its employees and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This negative perception of the iCall system is limiting Taiwan Taxi s ability to obtain more
subscribers and explains why the company is having difficulty reaching their goal of 20,000 members.
This identifies a clear disconnect between management and the cab drivers. The managers associate
the iCall with direct value and make the assumption that the cabbies will do the same. However, many
cabbies have not figured out how to strategically utilize the technology to increase proficiency and
maximize profit.
Regulatory Differences In Singapore, the taxi industry was highly regulated and organized. Drivers
are required to hold a valid Taxi Driver s Vocational License which could be obtained after completing
their training course at the Singapore Taxi Academy and passing a theory test. Comparatively, Taiwan
drivers only need to pass a basic driving test to become a cabbie. This difference in credentials shows
the control and regulatory differences between the two cultures in the taxi industry. As a result of the
rules and regulations in Singapore and the lack of rules and regulations in Taiwan, the regions gain
two completely different types of taxi drivers. The Singapore taxi industry acquires employees that are
professional and dedicated to their job because they see it as a career. The drivers there plan on staying
in the profession for an extended period of time. In Taiwan the lack of rules and regulation in
obtaining professional licenses

Andersen s The Little Mermaid vs. Disney s The Little Mermaid:
The Struggle to Find Sexuality Walt Disney s movies have been thrilling young children, most
especially young girls, around the world for years. One specific movie, The Little Mermaid, had
young girls wanting to be just like Ariel and buying any paraphernalia they could after the movie came
out. But have you ever wondered where these stories have come from? Or why they always end with a
happily ever after ? The famous, Danish, children s writer Hans Christian Andersen is the father of the
tale of The Little Mermaid . Andersen s original is quite different than Walt Disney s happily ever after
tale. With differences in imagery, theme, and storyline in Andersen s The Little Mermaid and Walt
Disney s The Little Mermaid, there is a lot to be said for Andersen s emphasis on the female character
of the Little Mermaid as well as her struggle in finding her sexuality through various different events
and aspects of her life. Andersen s tale begins with the background of the Little Mermaid s life and
family. There seems to be a sort of emphasis on her and her sisters lack of a mother, but rather a
grandmother who stands in as mother as well as a sea king as a father. The lack of a mother is a key
part in the growing and maturity of the princess herself. Finn Hauberg Mortensen, a Danish scholar,
says in his criticism The Little Mermaid: Icon

Social Expectations Of Women In Dracula
Women and Sex in Bram Stoker s Dracula
The novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker, is a very dark and gothic story that has many themes.
Although the most controversial theme throughout the story is Stokers opinion on women during the
Victorian era. The novel was written in 1897, a time where chastity, and etiquette were expected to be
demonstrated by every model citizen. However there was a huge controversial issue during that time
about women. More specifically the social expectations of women. Women during the Victorian era
women were expected to behave appropriately to social standards at all times, especially around men.
Although there was a large majority that supported the idea of The New Woman , which was a term
for a new type of women. One where the social expectations of women were completely disregarded
as they felt they had constrictions with these social expectations and preferred to be shown as equals.
This idea of The New Woman is shown in the story Dracula and the author, Bram Stoker, uses the
characters and their unfortunate situations to express his opinion on this new concept: The New
Woman.
The New Woman was an idea in the Victorian era that proposed women should not have to follow
certain social standards. In an article by Carol A. Senf she explains that The New Woman had certain
characteristics that went against the social standard. The New Woman was often a professional woman
who chose financial independence and personal fulfilment

The Social Hierarchy Of Jane Eyre By Charlotte Bronte
In Charlotte Bronte s novel, Jane Eyre, Bronte seemingly condemns the existing social hierarchy. Not
only are the characters who are most concerned with the allure of fortune and rank portrayed as either
deceitful or unethical, but even characters who ve accepted their means of poverty and demonstrate
honest moral natures are mocked. Rather than use the normal class structures, the book suggests that a
person of impoverished means can be viewed as socially respectable with the condition that they
maintain a sincere desire to better both oneself and their means of living.
The novel highlights the significance of class consciousness and how one particular class can become
subjective to the hands of the dogmatic elites. The derogative attitudes regarding social class first
occurs when Jane suffers horrible treatment from John Reed. He violently torments Jane and
constantly reminds her that she is an orphan and a dependent of the Reed family, forcing into her mind
that to be without a class is to be without worth. He imposes fear into Jane and reminding her that he
is the superior being.
You have no business to take our books; you are a dependent, mamma says; you have no money; your
father left you none; you ought to beg, and not to live here with gentlemen s children like us, and eat
the same meals we do, and wear clothes at our mamma s expense. Now, I ll teach you to rummage my

The Destruction Of The Earth s Environment
The destruction of the Earth s environment is known by almost every human alive. Our planet is time
and again being attacked by the dominant human race. People treat the earth as if it does not have a
role in our survival as a species. This assault on the environment has been going on for centuries and
has brought about consequences that many of us cannot even fathom. If the world is anything like the
environment depicted in the novel He, She, and It, the world we know today will be seen as a haven.
The environment in the novel as horrible as it may be, is not far from reality. Deterioration of the earth
s environment, population growth, depletion of our resources and world poverty are all issues that
point to the future shown in He, She and It. The possibility that we could annihilate ourselves has
never been more real. However, our species is one of the most adaptable creatures on Earth, and with
our developing technology we might just be able to salvage the world we have left.
It seems as humans evolve and advance, we also use nature to our advantage, and do not use any of
our new found technology to find ways to replenish those supplies which we so willingly take. Today,
California is a test of our capability to adapt to human caused climate change. California s first efforts
to adapt started with the Assembly Bill 32 (the 2006 Global Warming Solutions Act), which has goals
to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. Then the state later drafted its first climate

Hobsbawm s Theory on the General Crisis of the 17th Century
Hobsbawm s Theory on the General Crisis of the 17th century
It is generally accepted by historians that there was a ‘crisis that blanketed all of Europe during the
17th century. A myriad of revolts, uprisings and economic contractions occurred almost
simultaneously and had a profound impact on the socio economics of the entire continent. The topic
for discussion in this paper is the effects that this ‘crisis had on Europe and its developments. In
particular, the focus will be on Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm, and his theory that the 17th century
crisis was the catalyst for the transition from feudal society to capitalism in England and ultimately the
genesis of the industrial revolution. Hobsbawm argues that it was the crisis of the ... Show more

However even if it is a given that there was an inadequate concentration of capital in prior to the 17th
century to establish capitalism, Hobsbawm still fails to demonstrate how the crisis affected to use of
capital, a topic which will be discussed later in this paper.
Hobsbawm argues that there was no division of labor under feudal society to enable mass production
leading to capitalistic profits. However Lublinskaya shows that there was a concentration of disperse
manufactures in Germany, Spain and especially France who had already established large scale
manufacturing using division of labor since the early 16th century. So it can hardly be said that this
necessary criteria for capitalism was missing in, or originated by the 17th century . Hobsbawm also
makes the claim that the continue exploitation of the peasantry under feudalism reduced their capacity
as a cash consumers . This hindered demand for mass produced goods and thus providing companies
with little incentive to become active in more revolutionary capital enterprises. However Lublinskaya
points out that the continual exploitation of the peasantry eventually forces them to resort to the sale of
their labor power making them a cash consumer. This feudal system of exploitation did not ultimately
reduced demand but stimulated it .
Another critic of Hobsbawm s theory was historian, H.R. Trevor Roper. In his paper, General Crisis of
the Seventeenth Century, he attacks

Obedience and Submissiveness in Samuel Beckett s Waiting...
Obedience and Submissiveness in Waiting for Godot
Samuel Beckett s pessimistic attitude about the existence of man lead him to write one of the best
contemporary plays known to the twentieth century. Even with its bland unchanging set, clown like
characters, and seemingly meaningless theme, Waiting for Godot, arouses the awareness of human
tragedy through the characters tragic flaws.
Charles Lyons feels, a character s attitude of the space in which he lives, shows a range of detail
marking economic status, social classification, and psychology (Lyons 19). Beckett uses the character,
Lucky, as a metaphor for Man. Using physical, mental, and social blemishes, Lucky exemplifies
Becketts idea that universal man is a slave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus Lucky is drawn closer to bondage now not by choice, but by necessity. Their relationship
becomes symbiotic. Just as man communally needs man to help get through rough times, Lucky needs
his master to communicate for him.
The next blemish that contributes to the slavery of Lucky is his mentality. Lucky is not capable of
functioning on average human mental capacities. According to Eva Metman, Lucky allows his master
to organize his life for him (Metman 122). This makes life easier to bear because Lucky can escape
the burden and consequence surrounded by decision making. Beckett portrays Lucky as a lunatic too
dumb to speak or even think for himself. When Lucky finally does speak, on command, he stutters
and repeats incoherently, according to Ramona Cormier and Janis Pallister. They also feel Lucky s
disorganized sentence fragments is symbolic of the mental deterioration of man (Cormier and Pallister
9). In addition, Iser believes, the repetition emphasizes [Lucky s] unawareness of problems (Iser 253).
Lucky s ideas are distorted from lack of identity. He cannot be his own person, thus, the broken record
like speech symbolizes his broken spirit. Man tends to waddle through life pretending that his mental
being is somewhat tainted in order to divert problems and avoid circumstance. Finally, Beckett s
universal man is conveyed through the social status Lucky upholds. Lucky is below animal

Effects Of The Panic Of 1837
The panic of 1837 was arguably more devastating than the depression of the 1930 s, yet less well
known. During the period of roughly 7 years between 1837 and the mid 1840 s the U.S. economy
underwent massive economic hardships and consequences which many economists ultimately believe
helped lead to the American civil war in 1861. Causes for the panic include: government policies,
speculative lending practices, decline in cotton prices, a collapsing land bubble, international cash
flow and restrictive lending policies (Wiki). Historians believe that it was Jackson s policies that lead
to the inflationary boom and the Panic of 1837, which suspended the convertibility of paper money
into specie. Historians point the finger to three of Jackson s policies. The first was Jackson s veto of a
bill to recharter the second Bank of the United States, in 1832. The federal reserves of the Bank of the
United States were distributed to the state chartered banks that were favored by Jackson. Historians
believe that this led to the reserve ratio being reduced because there was no central bank regulating the
banks. This led to an increase in the money supply and inflation (Sylla). The second policy was the
Deposit Act of 1836, which was the distribution of the surplus in paper money to the states, after the
National Debt was paid (Sylla, Rothbard 99). This extra money caused an increase in spending by the
states (Rothbard 100). The last policy led to the Panic of 1837; the Specie

the operational level successes during OOD was that the Libyan Integrated Air Defense System

was that maritime forces overcame logistics and target challenges in order to enforce the arms

AFRICOM was not prepared or manned to do what they were being asked to do. As Secretary of
Defense (SECDEF) Robert Gates stated, AFRICOM represents yet another important step in
modernizing our defense arrangements in light of the twenty first century realities. It is, at its heart, a
different kind of command with a different orientation... AFRICOM s mission is not to wage war, but
to prevent it; not to show United States military presence, but to enhance the security forces of our
partners . What could have prevented this failure was for AFRICOM to be set up as a full GCC
capable of being able to complete kinetic operations, if needed. The second failure experienced during
the operation was that AFRICOM did not have a clear cut end goal. Without a defined endstate for
operations in Libya, AFRICOM was uncertain as to what resources it needed for operations. As
Clausewitz wrote, No one starts a war or rather no one in his senses ought to do so without first being
clear in his mind what he intends to achieve by that war and how he intends to conduct it. The former
is its political purpose; the latter is its operational objective. Even though he stated this back in the
1800 s, Clausewitz s point is still appropriate. I believe we were clear in our minds when the crisis
started what our intentions were. Because the on going situation was changing at such a rapid pace
there was no time to define a clear cut end goal. This rapid shift in missions

The distribution of plants and animals in the Galapagos was puzzling to Darwin; where did these
species originate from? Why don t the same species appear in similar environments? Many species
only lived on the Galapagos and sometimes, only one certain island. How did these species end up
there? There were species on the Galapagos such as insects and reptiles that resembled some species
in South America, but were also different in very slight ways. Darwin began to wonder if species
would travel to the Galapagos, and then adapt to their new environments over time. If two species
came from a common ancestor, it would make sense for them to live together. For example, Darwin s
finches he discovered on the Galapagos had differently sized beaks. These beaks would differ in size
according to the area these birds were in their appearance and behavior quickly adapted to this closed

to adopt his view of progress and his rationale of trade and exchange, his interpretations of the biblical
history. He contributed to England s transition of barbarous society into one of politeness. As a truly
universal writer, Defoe also had his hand in the secular beliefs. It is said that Robinson Crusoe has a
religious undertone message. In that, Robinson repented his sin of disobeying his father. Many of
Defoe works in 1726 related to his religious side. A few of these writings: The Political History of the

a series of demonological works which he wrote, and of which the chief others are A System of Magic

Similarities Between Matthew And The Gospel Of Luke
The Bible has four gospels but, only two of them contain the nativity story. The two gospels that have
the nativity story are the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke. Both are similar on a literary
level which can be explained by the synoptic problem. The Gospel of Mark and the source Q were the
basis of these two gospels. Matthew and Luke shared sources but, they had their individual sources
too. The genealogy, the nativity, and the childhood of Jesus played significant roles within the
respective gospels. All components helped both authors generate a unique message to their audience.
Also, they provided an insight of the beginning of Jesus s journey and his mission on Earth.
First, background information needs to be given about the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The theory, Special Luke, is proven many times within Luke s portrayal of Jesus s genealogy, birth,
and young childhood. The Gospel of Luke began with chronicle of John the Baptist. An angel
appeared to Zechariah, the father of John, and announced that John the Baptist would be born. This
was a unique beginning because John the Baptist paved the way for Jesus and his ministry. Mary was
then visited by Angel Gabriel who announced the birth of Jesus. Mary then relied [h]ere am I, the
servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word (Luke 1:38). The narrative continued on
with Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth, John the Baptist s mother. Elizabeth then gives birth to her
son and on the eighth day he is circumcised and named John. Luke decided to tell the nativity story in
Mary s perspective. This emphasized how everyone was accepted in God s kingdom and women were
disciples of God. Joseph and Mary had to travel to Judea from Nazareth, their hometown, for
registration. This led Mary to deliver Jesus in a barn somewhere in Bethlehem. Shepherds nearby were
notified of the Messiah s birth through angels. Eight days after Jesus s birth, he was circumcised and
named. Jesus was then presented to God in the Temple in Jerusalem. The holy family then returns to
Nazareth. By age twelve, Jesus and his family went to the Temple in Jerusalem for the festival of

Power And Influence On Employees
In its simplest definition, power is regarded as the ability to influence to behavior of other people
using different tactics to push or prompt action. It is as well referred as the possession of authority and
influence over others. Depending on how it is used, power can lead to either positive or negative
outcomes. There are different sources of power that one can gain power in different places such as
country, organization or any other place that leadership is required. Additionally, there are different
types of power that are used in different scenarios. This research looks into different sources of power
through analysis of the different sources of power, identifying helpful information from the sources,
and finally explaining how to apply the information learnt from the sources to influence employees in
the workplace (Green, 1999).
The element of power has been in use for whether in leadership or not. For different types of
leadership to be effective, power and influence are two key elements in leadership. However, the two
are often confused. In an organization, setting power is defined in different ways such as the ability to
control other workers behaviors. Power is irrelevant without people to perceive it, as it is referred as
the relationship between people. In abroad approach, power can be divided into two different
categories; Position Power and Personal Power. Despite being different from power, authority and

The Problem Of Gender Discrimination In The Workplace
Discrimination in the Workplace
And each of us can practice rights ourselves, treating each other without discrimination, respecting
each other s rights or dignities (Carol Bellamy). In today s economy, being bias in the workplace is
more than a distraction, it is costly. It is hurting people of different race, ethnicity, age, sex, religion,
and more. Working to stop inequality is something that needs to happen. While some may say that
unfairness helps the economy and puts everyone in the right place, discrimination is prevalent in
world history, and definitely affects the workplaces in the economy and their workers.
Because of what has happened in world history, it is affecting workplace discrimination today.
According to an article written by Donald Mayer called Gender Discrimination, Gender or sex
discrimination in the United States has a long tradition, partaking of a much wider phenomenon of
discrimination against women that is both ancient and global. In many countries, women are still
regarded as the property of men, are denied access to birth control information, are not allowed to
vote, and are prohibited from working with men (Mayer Gender Discrimination ). The U.S. and other
countries have been continuing the act of inequality for a while now. Not only is racial discrimination
an issue in the workplace, but so is gender biases. The female gender is less likely to get a job at a
place they want compared to a male. Workplaces be prejudice against hiring

Abstract:
This case is about the design of Ford Pinto specifically the gas tank that was in a dangerous place that
would ignite the car in a rear end collision. The problem is that Ford used a cost benefit analysis not to
upgrade the fuel system even if it lead to more deaths. This decision by Ford led to many controversial
issuses that relates to safety, risk, and conflict of interest decisions.

George Wolfowitz s Decision Points Essay
What motivated the Bush administration to invade Iraq in 2003 despite strong opposition from the
international community? On one side, the administration maintains that the invasion was necessary to
prevent Iraq from developing weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). In his memoir Decision Points ,
Bush argued that Saddam posed too much of a threat he brutalized his own people, violated
international demands, and sponsored terrorist groups like al Qaeda. On the opposing side, critics of
the war argue that the Bush administration used the 9/11 terrorist attack and the threat of WMDs to
justify waging an illegal war against Iraq in order to extract Iraqi oil to fund the military industrial
complex, to secure Israel, and to finish the job of deposing Saddam. While these explanations for the
invasion have some merit, they are problematic because they fail to capture the extent of the
administration s actual ambitions. An analysis of how individuals on Bush s administration, such as
Paul Wolfowitz and Condoleezza Rice, viewed the world reveals that the invasion of Iraq was
intended to demonstrate the effectiveness of and necessity for preemptive action, overthrow Saddam,
and transform the Middle East. However, what was perceived to be a quick and easy operation to
stabilize the Middle East and secure America s interest backfired and turned Iraq into a safe haven for
terrorists.
One reason the Bush administration decided to invade Iraq was to set a precedent for the US to

Analysis Of Dulce Et Decorum Est
Horrors of the Trenches Wilfred Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est is a poem made of four stanzas in an a,
b, a, b rhyme scheme. There is hardly any rhythm to the entire poem, although Owen makes it sound
like it is in iambic pentameter in some lines. Every stanza has a different amount of lines, ranging
from two to twelve. To convey the poem s purpose, Owen uses an unconventional poem style and
horrid, graphic images of the frontlines to convey the unbearable circumstances that many young
soldiers went through in World War I. Not only did these men have to partake in such painful duties,
but these duties contrasted with the view of the war made by the populace of the mainland country.
Many of these people are pro war and would never see the battlefield themselves. Owen s use of word
choice, imagery, metaphors, exaggeration, and the contrast between the young, war deteriorated
soldiers and populace s favorable view of war creates Owen s own unfavorable view of the war to
readers. The title and final lines of the poem is Latin for It is sweet and honorable. At first glance, the
title may seem to be supportive of the war, however it is the ultimate irony of the story. The title uses
the words sweet and honor to open the reader to ideas of these feelings. The first stanza portrays the
bleakness of the battlefield for these young soldiers. The first two lines describe the soldiers as old
beggars and hags because of the horrendous situation they were put in. Many of the soldiers

The Philosohpy of Immanuel Kant
Immanuel Kant is referred to as the father of deontological ethics, which is also colloquially referred
to as Kantianism, which provides a sophisticated explication of deontology. His philosophy embodies
capitulating to one s maxim, which he beliefs that to be good, however, only if one s motives are
unconditional and irrespective to external reason. The maxim is referred to as the individual s intrinsic
duty or obligation to one s self or to others, which if applicable to everyone than it is congenial to the
universal law. John Stuart Mill is an advocate of the utilitarian theory, which believes that happiness is
the manifestation of pleasure and the absence of pain. These pleasures that Mill speaks of is divided
into two forms, that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mill believes in the praxis of pleasure to accumulate the zenith of happiness, but with the absent of
pain. Motivation is irrelevant when regarding morality, because the result of one s actions determines
the morality, which is why utilitarianism is often referred to as consequentialism. This philosophy is
synonymous to a democracy in the sense that the majority hold the moral weight, One should act so as
to promote the greatest happiness to the greatest number of those who will be affected by the act.
There are two parts which constitute pleasure by mills standards, intellectual and bodily. Bodily
pleasures are those that are stimulating to animals, because it does not involve the intellect. Humans,
however, have facilities that are more evolved than that of nonhumans, so the intellectual pleasures are
more appealing to humans. Intellectual pleasures are of more value than bodily. He compares the
stimulation from the intellectual pleasures to that of an ethereal plant, meaning that one can easily
adulterate the culmination of the aesthetic appreciation, due to societal influences

Baz Luhrmann s Presentation of Romeo and Juliet to a Modern Audience In this essay, I will be
comparing the way the 400 years old William Shakespeare s film Romeo and Juliet was transformed
by Baz luharmann for the understanding of the modern audience. Romeo and Juliet was written by
William Shakespeare 400 years ago. In the past plays were acted in the theatre. The plays were totally
different from the way they are now. The theatre had a stage where the play was to be acted; this had
an entrance and an exit. There was no lighting and no scenery; there was also a balcony on the first
floor where some scenes were acted. Below the stage was where the audience stood to watch the play.
There were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The film starts with a television set and a newscaster reading the news. This is the way the prologue is
first presented. She talks about the setting in fair Verona, where we lay our scene , she talks about the
main story and characters in this quotation two households both alike in dignity and she also says
short statements which are a brief summary of the play. At the top right corner of the screen there is a
picture of a broken ring and below it are these words; star crossed lovers . This illustrates that there is
love and a broken relationship between two lovers in the film. Also the broken ring suggests that the
lovers relationship will be but a short one as it is destined to end in tragedy. Also there is dramatic
operatic music at the background; it suggests the film will most likely be a tragedy as is often seen in
grand operas. The Prologue is delivered again. This is very different from the first time; it contains
flashes of scenes in the film/ informative clips. This prologue has a voiceover of Friar. He is the
perfect person for this job because he knows the story from the start to the end. The clips are very
informative. The two towers with the names MONTAGUE AND CAPULET suggest wealth and
probably business rivalry, which a modern audience would understand. It also shows they are both
well to do families. We can also say they are of the same status:

An Essay On Houston Texas
Hous·to·ni·an, a native resident of Houston, Texas. This term is popular in more states than Texas.
There s a saying that Everything is bigger and better in Texas. Houston is the fourth largest city in
America behind Nevada and ahead of New Mexico. Now that is big. People that are born in Texas are
natives, and therefore Houstonian. There are several races that call Houston home like Hispanics,
Asians, Blacks and Europeans. There is also a refugee population in Houston from places like
Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia. However, any person that lives in the culture and experiences the
culture to the extent that they consider themselves native can also be called a Houstonian. Houstonian
is not a term. Houstonian is a way of life, a culture, and an identity. Technically a Houstonian is
anyone native to the city of Houston, Texas. As vague as that may be, this surprisingly includes all
kinds of nationalities and races. Houston is melting pot city and many families are started here. As
long as you have lived in the city for a minimum time, or have been born in Houston that makes you a
Houstonian. Usually natives are born into a family of natives as well but other times it is a generation
that starts the path going forward. There is no particular face of a Houstonian, or style of dress for that
matter. A Houstonian is recognized by their comfort in the city. Houstonians a proud of their city and
often rally often at festivals and events to celebrate that culture of a fun and

  • 2. The Global Pursuit Of Economic Development Since The End... In Global Political Economy, Chapter 11 discusses the global pursuit of economic development since the end of the Second World War (219). In a nutshell, this analysis involves the account and summary of some of the information that has been previously presented in earlier chapters of this book. Mainly, the process of industrialization in Great Britain as well as the United States is noted in the introduction to the chapter. Afterwards, the authors proceed to define the term development using quotes and statements from a few other authors. But, the central idea of development, no matter how the definition may be worded, takes into account the themes of process and condition, or the change of condition. In addition, when regarding the immediate era after the war, development relied on economic growth of a country measured by its Gross National Product (GNP) (221). The Gross National Product, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, is the total market value of the final goods and services produced by a nation s economy during a specific period of time (usually a year), computed before allowance is made for the depreciation or consumption of capital used in the process of production (Encyclopedia Britannica). The timeline of development for countries worldwide after WWII is then clarified. Many nations were considered underdeveloped , backward , or most commonly Third World . Many theories have been advanced over the years, but there remains no single, universally agreed upon explanation as to what the root cause was. However, many experts agree that banking played a crucial and single handedly one of the most important roles into what caused the Great Depression. Furthermore, Americans lost nearly 20% of their deposits when the banks failed. • 7. Challenges And Advantages And Disadvantages Of Matrix... There are many types of structures that an organization might have, each of them comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Let us look at the benefits and drawbacks of three (or rather, five) of the more modern structures. Matrix organizations One of the biggest challenges for employees in a matrix organization is the fact that they have to report to multiple managers. With employees directly reporting to two or more supervisors, these supervisors need to be highly coordinated with one another to make sure that they re giving consistent orders. Otherwise, employees may be given orders from different managers that are very difficult to follow in unison. Even worse, orders from different managers can outright conflict. Employees can t follow these orders because they re mutually exclusive. This causes ambiguity and confusion as to what the employee should do. This problem can be avoided with high levels of communication and coordination between department managers and project managers though. If these managers can stay on the same page, they can have a much clearer picture of where to lead employees and they can put up a unified front. In that way, instructions from either manager that a given employee reports to can give orders consistent with the orders given by the other manager, and the employee will be able to follow the lead of both managers simultaneously. • 12. Difference Between Altruism And Altruism INTRODUCTION Our generation today focuses much more on personal gain, prioritizing themselves for pleasure and self enjoyment. We are in a generation where good name is no more preferred or precious than gold, rather, money is a good name and more precious than a good one, where love for one self, vanity, and giving importance on earthly things counts as a way of having success by pursuing what is best for us and for our loved ones. The Me Generation only shows that people give so much gratitude and admiration to themselves, and that their concentration is self centered and egoistic. This kind of attitude leads people to care less about the social, political, economic and environmental aspects of our lives. Today s generation focuses on acquiring worldly things by having so much money, power, and fame, whereas the idea of having concern with other people in the society is starting to disappear. • 18. Analysis Of Shakespeare s The Winter s Tale Though the idea that women should be subservient is pervasive in Renaissance literature, Shakespeare challenges this concept in The Winter s Tale by providing evidence to the contrary. His female characters are able to gain power using different techniques according to their situations. However, these methods vary greatly between the court of the shepherd in Bohemia and Leontes court in Sicilia. While women in the royal court gain influence through their use of effective rhetoric, Shakespeare describes that Perdita s power in the shepherd s court stems mostly from her beauty. From this juxtaposition, Shakespeare claims that women in a lower class setting are empowered by their appearance while women in an upper class setting use language to affect change. Furthermore, Shakespeare also expresses his contention that men believe in an opposite system of empowerment according to their social class. He argues that gentlemen associate power with appearance and view rhetoric as unimportant while lower class men put more emphasis on language as a means of empowerment. Overall, Shakespeare provides an argument that women are empowered through different methods depending on their socioeconomic standing. Of course, there are specific ways to use a map such as basic components. Basic components include a compass rose which indicates the cardinal directions. Legends is the key where symbols are used to help find a point on the map, or in other words, lead the way. A scale can range from as far as a continent to as close as a house. All these components are important while using a map. The most accurate way to represent the world is through map projection. Unfortunately, the iCall did not bring the success that Taiwan Taxi hoped it would which left management questioning why the system worked so well in one country and not the other. However, many cabbies have not figured out how to strategically utilize the technology to increase proficiency and maximize profit. Burns Professor Cipri Imaginative Literature 30 April 2013 Andersen s The Little Mermaid vs. Disney s The Little Mermaid: The Struggle to Find Sexuality Walt Disney s movies have been thrilling young children, most especially young girls, around the world for years. One specific movie, The Little Mermaid, had young girls wanting to be just like Ariel and buying any paraphernalia they could after the movie came out. But have you ever wondered where these stories have come from? Or why they always end with a happily ever after ? The famous, Danish, children s writer Hans Christian Andersen is the father of the tale of The Little Mermaid . Andersen s original is quite different than Walt Disney s happily ever after tale. With differences in imagery, theme, and storyline in Andersen s The Little Mermaid and Walt Disney s The Little Mermaid, there is a lot to be said for Andersen s emphasis on the female character of the Little Mermaid as well as her struggle in finding her sexuality through various different events and aspects of her life. Andersen s tale begins with the background of the Little Mermaid s life and family. There seems to be a sort of emphasis on her and her sisters lack of a mother, but rather a grandmother who stands in as mother as well as a sea king as a father. The lack of a mother is a key part in the growing and maturity of the princess herself. Finn Hauberg Mortensen, a Danish scholar, says in his criticism The Little Mermaid: Icon ... • 29. The Social Hierarchy Of Jane Eyre By Charlotte Bronte In Charlotte Bronte s novel, Jane Eyre, Bronte seemingly condemns the existing social hierarchy. Not only are the characters who are most concerned with the allure of fortune and rank portrayed as either deceitful or unethical, but even characters who ve accepted their means of poverty and demonstrate honest moral natures are mocked. Rather than use the normal class structures, the book suggests that a person of impoverished means can be viewed as socially respectable with the condition that they maintain a sincere desire to better both oneself and their means of living. The novel highlights the significance of class consciousness and how one particular class can become subjective to the hands of the dogmatic elites. The derogative attitudes regarding social class first occurs when Jane suffers horrible treatment from John Reed. He violently torments Jane and constantly reminds her that she is an orphan and a dependent of the Reed family, forcing into her mind that to be without a class is to be without worth. He imposes fear into Jane and reminding her that he is the superior being. This assault on the environment has been going on for centuries and has brought about consequences that many of us cannot even fathom. If the world is anything like the environment depicted in the novel He, She, and It, the world we know today will be seen as a haven. The environment in the novel as horrible as it may be, is not far from reality. Deterioration of the earth s environment, population growth, depletion of our resources and world poverty are all issues that point to the future shown in He, She and It. The possibility that we could annihilate ourselves has never been more real. Hobsbawm s Theory on the General Crisis of the 17th Century Hobsbawm s Theory on the General Crisis of the 17th century It is generally accepted by historians that there was a ‘crisis that blanketed all of Europe during the 17th century. A myriad of revolts, uprisings and economic contractions occurred almost simultaneously and had a profound impact on the socio economics of the entire continent. The topic for discussion in this paper is the effects that this ‘crisis had on Europe and its developments. However even if it is a given that there was an inadequate concentration of capital in prior to the 17th century to establish capitalism, Hobsbawm still fails to demonstrate how the crisis affected to use of capital, a topic which will be discussed later in this paper. Hobsbawm argues that there was no division of labor under feudal society to enable mass production leading to capitalistic profits. However Lublinskaya shows that there was a concentration of disperse manufactures in Germany, Spain and especially France who had already established large scale manufacturing using division of labor since the early 16th century. So it can hardly be said that this necessary criteria for capitalism was missing in, or originated by the 17th century . Hobsbawm also makes the claim that the continue exploitation of the peasantry under feudalism reduced their capacity as a cash consumers . This hindered demand for mass produced goods and thus providing companies with little incentive to become active in more revolutionary capital enterprises. However Lublinskaya points out that the continual exploitation of the peasantry eventually forces them to resort to the sale of their labor power making them a cash consumer. Lucky is not capable of functioning on average human mental capacities. According to Eva Metman, Lucky allows his master to organize his life for him (Metman 122). This makes life easier to bear because Lucky can escape the burden and consequence surrounded by decision making. Beckett portrays Lucky as a lunatic too dumb to speak or even think for himself. When Lucky finally does speak, on command, he stutters and repeats incoherently, according to Ramona Cormier and Janis Pallister. During the period of roughly 7 years between 1837 and the mid 1840 s the U.S. economy underwent massive economic hardships and consequences which many economists ultimately believe helped lead to the American civil war in 1861. Causes for the panic include: government policies, speculative lending practices, decline in cotton prices, a collapsing land bubble, international cash flow and restrictive lending policies (Wiki). Historians believe that it was Jackson s policies that lead to the inflationary boom and the Panic of 1837, which suspended the convertibility of paper money into specie. Historians point the finger to three of Jackson s policies. The first was Jackson s veto of a bill to recharter the second Bank of the United States, in 1832. The federal reserves of the Bank of the United States were distributed to the state chartered banks that were favored by Jackson. Historians believe that this led to the reserve ratio being reduced because there was no central bank regulating the banks. This led to an increase in the money supply and inflation (Sylla). The second policy was the Deposit Act of 1836, which was the distribution of the surplus in paper money to the states, after the National Debt was paid (Sylla, Rothbard 99). This extra money caused an increase in spending by the states (Rothbard 100). The last policy led to the Panic of 1837; the Specie ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. The Problem Of Gender Discrimination In The Workplace Discrimination in the Workplace And each of us can practice rights ourselves, treating each other without discrimination, respecting each other s rights or dignities (Carol Bellamy). In today s economy, being bias in the workplace is more than a distraction, it is costly. It is hurting people of different race, ethnicity, age, sex, religion, and more. Working to stop inequality is something that needs to happen. While some may say that unfairness helps the economy and puts everyone in the right place, discrimination is prevalent in world history, and definitely affects the workplaces in the economy and their workers. Because of what has happened in world history, it is affecting workplace discrimination today. According to an article written by Donald Mayer called Gender Discrimination, Gender or sex discrimination in the United States has a long tradition, partaking of a much wider phenomenon of discrimination against women that is both ancient and global. In many countries, women are still regarded as the property of men, are denied access to birth control information, are not allowed to vote, and are prohibited from working with men (Mayer Gender Discrimination ). The U.S. and other countries have been continuing the act of inequality for a while now. Not only is racial discrimination an issue in the workplace, but so is gender biases. • 45. George Wolfowitz s Decision Points Essay What motivated the Bush administration to invade Iraq in 2003 despite strong opposition from the international community? On one side, the administration maintains that the invasion was necessary to prevent Iraq from developing weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). In his memoir Decision Points , Bush argued that Saddam posed too much of a threat he brutalized his own people, violated international demands, and sponsored terrorist groups like al Qaeda. On the opposing side, critics of the war argue that the Bush administration used the 9/11 terrorist attack and the threat of WMDs to justify waging an illegal war against Iraq in order to extract Iraqi oil to fund the military industrial complex, to secure Israel, and to finish the job of deposing Saddam. While these explanations for the invasion have some merit, they are problematic because they fail to capture the extent of the administration s actual ambitions. An analysis of how individuals on Bush s administration, such as Paul Wolfowitz and Condoleezza Rice, viewed the world reveals that the invasion of Iraq was intended to demonstrate the effectiveness of and necessity for preemptive action, overthrow Saddam, and transform the Middle East. However, what was perceived to be a quick and easy operation to stabilize the Middle East and secure America s interest backfired and turned Iraq into a safe haven for terrorists. One reason the Bush administration decided to invade Iraq was to set a precedent for the US to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Analysis Of Dulce Et Decorum Est Horrors of the Trenches Wilfred Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est is a poem made of four stanzas in an a, b, a, b rhyme scheme. There is hardly any rhythm to the entire poem, although Owen makes it sound like it is in iambic pentameter in some lines. Every stanza has a different amount of lines, ranging from two to twelve. To convey the poem s purpose, Owen uses an unconventional poem style and horrid, graphic images of the frontlines to convey the unbearable circumstances that many young soldiers went through in World War I. Not only did these men have to partake in such painful duties, but these duties contrasted with the view of the war made by the populace of the mainland country. Many of these people are pro war and would never see the battlefield themselves. Owen s use of word choice, imagery, metaphors, exaggeration, and the contrast between the young, war deteriorated soldiers and populace s favorable view of war creates Owen s own unfavorable view of the war to readers. The title and final lines of the poem is Latin for It is sweet and honorable. At first glance, the title may seem to be supportive of the war, however it is the ultimate irony of the story. The title uses the words sweet and honor to open the reader to ideas of these feelings. The first stanza portrays the bleakness of the battlefield for these young soldiers. The first two lines describe the soldiers as old beggars and hags because of the horrendous situation they were put in. Many of the soldiers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Baz Luhrmann s Presentation of Romeo and Juliet to a Modern Audience In this essay, I will be comparing the way the 400 years old William Shakespeare s film Romeo and Juliet was transformed by Baz luharmann for the understanding of the modern audience. Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare 400 years ago. In the past plays were acted in the theatre. The plays were totally different from the way they are now. The theatre had a stage where the play was to be acted; this had an entrance and an exit. There was no lighting and no scenery; there was also a balcony on the first floor where some scenes were acted. Below the stage was where the audience stood to watch the play. There were ... She talks about the setting in fair Verona, where we lay our scene , she talks about the main story and characters in this quotation two households both alike in dignity and she also says short statements which are a brief summary of the play. At the top right corner of the screen there is a picture of a broken ring and below it are these words; star crossed lovers . This illustrates that there is love and a broken relationship between two lovers in the film. Also the broken ring suggests that the lovers relationship will be but a short one as it is destined to end in tragedy. Also there is dramatic operatic music at the background; it suggests the film will most likely be a tragedy as is often seen in grand operas. The Prologue is delivered again. This is very different from the first time; it contains flashes of scenes in the film/ informative clips. This prologue has a voiceover of Friar. He is the perfect person for this job because he knows the story from the start to the end. The clips are very informative. The two towers with the names MONTAGUE AND CAPULET suggest wealth and probably business rivalry, which a modern audience would understand. It also shows they are both well to do families. We can also say they are of the same status: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
