Essay on Hector Tobar s The Tattooed Soldier
Downtown Los Angeles is one of the busiest commercial centers in the United States. However, the
city holds two groups of people in different economic level the homeless and the working class.
Hector Tobar frequently includes the landscape of the setting in downtown Los Angeles in The
Tattooed Soldier. The novel is about two immigrants from Guatemala who have moved to Los
Angeles. The protagonist, Antonio, takes a revenge on the antagonist, Longoria because he murdered
Antonio s wife and son when he was a Guatemalan soldier. Tobar applies a number of metaphors to
connect the buildings and freeways in downtown to Antonio s position in the city. Buildings,
freeways, and shadows are metaphors for Antonio s economic and social status. ... Show more content

The stock exchange building represents material life and the windowless building represents security.
Antonio can observe these buildings that illustrate an ideal life, but he belongs to none of the qualities
that are associated with these buildings. He is exposed to all the danger of the city with no money at
all. Clearly, this reflects the poverty level of the protagonist compared to the working class in Los
Angeles. The people who are inside these buildings are having a good life, but Antonio is homeless;
he does not even have money to rent a shelter to protect himself.
The structure of the freeways illustrates the lack of freedom in the protagonist s social life. In the
beginning of the story, the author uses sleep under the freeway repetitively to emphasize Antonio s
low social status (9). Freeways represent work and economic activity, but Antonio has fallen off the
track. He is now under the freeway because he has dropped from the flow of the busy city life to the
lowest level in Los Angeles. Antonio was a scholar in Guatemala, but he works as a bus boy and later
becomes homeless after he moved to Los Angeles. The author states, Los Angeles made him
[Antonio] short (53). Antonio s social status is lowered by the city. He has become so short that it is
almost impossible for the others to notice him. A factor that lowers Antonio s social status is
communication. Antonio meets Frank in the homeless camp who says that people are switching lane

Sao Paulo Research Paper
Sao Paulo is a megalopoly, has around 19 million inhabitants, with its mobility issues around 7 million
cars and poor public transport infrastructure. The real estate speculation made the city grow with
hardly any urban planning and very few and far apart parks. Green areas were seen and reserved to
leisure time and not a necessary part for the city the lack of contact with nature and it is evident there.
The fact is almost no one know there is urban agriculture in Sao Paulo, even with its many problems
few initiatives are dotted around the city. The difference there is, while in developed countries urban
farming is somewhat seen as a new back to nature trend, in developing countries and places like Sao
Paulo this trend goes beyond that: it provides a vital source of nutrition and revitalization of an area. ...

Overview of Social Networking
Modern Technology has evolved, and impacted our society in a negative way. There are multiple
reasons as to why it affects our community, such as lower grades, job stability, cyberbullying, sexting,
and it can harm college admission. I have known a family friend that has experienced social
networking in a horrible way, which has messed with his dreams and life goals. Social networking has
a negative influence on our lives, causing many various problems in our community.
Social networks are internet sites that help people interact with each other, and help deliver
information such as pictures and videos. Social networking started in 1971, which was when the very

The athletes lost out on a gifted opportunity to play for there country in the 2012 olympics because of

Social Networking is used in horrible ways such as cyberbullying; people think just because they have
a screen in front of them, they feel they can say whatever and get away with it. Cyberbullying has
become so big of an issue that it can get you in trouble with the law because kids and adults are
starting to harm themselves which can lead to suicide. Its become so big in our society that if the bully
is caught they would have to serve time in a prison or juvenile. Reports have showed that 49.5% of
kids have fallen victim to cyber bullying and 33.7% have committed bullying behavior online
(ProCon.org). From studies and surveys in 2012, 800,000 minors have been cyber bullied or harassed
on Facebook (ProCon.org). There is one case that made cyberbullying a big issues, which was the case
of Rebecca Sedwick cases. This case was about a 12 year old girl that went to Crystal Lake Middle
School in Florida, she was bullied by two 14 year old girls. It started because Rebecca had a
relationship with a guy and the 14 year old started dating the guy after Rebecca did and from there on
she never liked Rebecca so she started to harass and bully her. The girl went as far as harassing

Imagery In The Perils Of Indifference By Elie Wiesel
Holocaust survivor and writer, Elie Wiesel in his influential speech The Perils of Indifference, claims
that indifference is the root of all evil and inhumanity all pain and all tragedy has resulted because of
indifference. He supports his claim by highlighting the reason for World Wars, Civil Wars,
Assassinations, Bloodbaths, and Tragedy indifference (Wiesel par. 5) . Specifically, Wiesel uses
imagery to paint an image of what the innocent victims of indifference experience. The poor children
[that] perish because of the indifference in a man s soul; until they see the children s pain and agony
and hear their pleas, until one of them dies because of the violence, disease and famine, then one will
notice the dangers of indifference (Wiesel par. 23) . Further, the author flashbacks to past events that
have left humans without a soul. He mentions how one day he woke up in a place of eternal infamy,
Buchenwald. Remembering the day he is captured and the day he is free[ed] (Wiesel par. 1) . The
problem now is that there [i]s no joy in his heart; he becomes a victim of indifference the metal torture
(Wiesel par. 1) . Wiesel s purpose is to inform humanity of the dangers indifference holds in order to
encourage humans to continue to hope for a world without indifference no pain, no horror. He
establishes a critical tone for readers by using stylistic devices such as imagery, flashbacks and
rhetorical questions in order to achieve his purpose that indifference is monstrous and dangerous.
Wiesel s message about the inhumanity of indifference and the importance of resistance is still
relevant today.
1999 marks the year Elie Wiesel presents the White House with his speech The Perils of Indifference.
He argues that to be indifferent is to be inhumane (Wiesel par 11) . Four years later genocide in Darfur
occurs; the first genocide of the 21st century (Darfur Genocide) . This genocide claims the lives of at
least 300,000 innocent people and displaced 3 million more people (Darfur Genocide) . Meanwhile,

FIFA Controversy
Based in Zurich, The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is the international
governing body of association football, futsal, and soccer. It has been recognized as the United
Nations of Football , affiliated with 209 associations across the globe (FIFA, 2015). Like any other
sport organization however, FIFA has long experienced allegations following the decision of Russia
being awarded the 2018 World Cup and Quatar having the 2022 hosting rights. According to the
reports, the United States Department of Justice reviewed the contracts related to the 2014 Brazil
World Cup involving FIFA, commercial partners, and suppliers.

However, after almost four years of being awarded, reports of corruption, vote buying, and human
rights abused has surfaced the news (Chi, 2014). The Telegraph reported that the former FIFA Vice
President, Jack Warner, and his family were paid millions from a company controlled by a former
Quatari football official in order to sway the vote on the 2022 World Cup. Supporting documents have
showed that payments totaling $750,000 were made to Warner s sons, and additional $400,000 was
paid to one of his employees (Claire et al, 2014). According to writer Samuel Chi from the Diplomat,
he resigned from the organization in June 2011, but not before votes were cast in December 2010.
Investigations from the FBI took effect immediately regarding the issue of Mr. Warner and his links to
the Quatari bid. Russia was also subject to controversy of breaking FIFA rules. Allegedly, the Sunday
Times reported that the president of Russia, Vladmir Putin, was a suspect of engaging in vote trading
and vote buying to win the support of FIFA voters (Sunday Times, 2014). The allegations were
contained within a database. Both Russia and Quatar have denied accusations, but US and Swiss
authorities continue to investigate the organization s bidding process. Although Domenico Scala, the
head of FIFA s audit and compliance committee has not found real evidence against Russia and

As mentioned within the paper, there are benefits to having services provided by both public and
private entities; however, there are also concerns. The public sector, which was portrayed by services
offered by TJJD, are required to provide yearly reports. In many ways these reports keep the system
accountable for the money they are spending and the services they provide or require for juvenile
offenders. The reports are open to the public and are easily accessible. As it relates to research, these
reports allow people to critically assess juvenile programs, while challenging the government to refine
or create programs superior to the ones offered in the past. Reports like these are harder to find
regarding services offered by private entities and is a concern. Programs in which juvenile offenders
are required to successfully complete, should never be determined by trial and error; however, this is
often the case. On a positive note, private entities and community resources typically target the
specific needs of a juvenile and include mental health components. Programs which do not offer
mental health services should be critically assessed, as they are less likely to succeed. It is important
that continued research is applied to the programs offered by both the public and private sectors. As it
stands today, treatment services offered

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disorder
Abstract
Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a metabolic disease commonly associated
with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and inflammation all features of insulin resistant syndrome. However,
very limited data are available regarding the association of subclinical inflammation and insulin
resistance with NAFLD in a prediabetic state. We, therefore, conducted the study to assess this
relationship among this population.
Methods: We studied a cross sectional analytical design of 140 [male/female, 77/63; age in years
(ranges), 45 (25 68)] prediabetic subjects after confirming with 75 g oral glucose tolerance test
(OGTT). The diagnosis of NAFLD was made by ultrasonic examination of the liver and divided into
groups of without NAFLD (n = 63) and NAFLD (n = 77). All individuals underwent anthropometric
and clinical examinations. Among laboratory investigations, serum glucose was estimated by glucose
oxidase method, serum lipid profile and liver enzymes were measured by the enzymatic colorimetric
method and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was measured by high performance liquid chromatography
(HPLC) technique. Serum insulin and high sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP) were measured by
enzyme immunoassay technique. Insulin resistance (HOMA IR) was calculated by homeostasis model
assessment (HOMA).
Results: There was significantly higher levels of hsCRP (2.82 ± 1.60 vs. 1.39 ± 0.66 mg/l, P 0.001)
and HOMA IR (4.03 ± 1.39 vs. 1.98 ± 1.04, P 0.001) in NAFLD subjects

Assess whether or not the changes in the structure of the...
Assess whether or not the changes in the structure of the UK industry have been beneficial for the
economy, industries and the consumer.
Over the past 30 years the structure of the UK economy has been transformed. By this I mean there
has been changes in the production and employment between the primary, secondary and tertiary
sectors.
In 1964, 1,201,000 people were employed in the primary sector. By 1995 there were only 383,000
people employed in the primary sector. This shows a decrease of 818,000 employees over 31 years.
This was mainly due to a contraction of output in the coal mining industries, and the collapse of oil
prices in 1986, further contributing toward the declining industry.
The second change in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to this limited availability there was a sharp increase in price, causing the demand to fall, and the
demand for substitutes to increase. As a result there was a decline in output and employment. A prime
example is steel, the substitute being aluminium. International competition had a dramatic affect on
UK structure.
Changing consumer tastes, the creation of new products and the changing comparative costs result in
the redistribution of economic activity around the world. For example the Japanese were able to
produce more reliable motorcycles at a cheaper cost and therefore there was a decline in the UK
motorcycle industry, because Japan had a comparative advantage.
The membership of the EU meant some inevitable restructuring of the UK economy, in accordance
with European comparative advantages, as there were no trade restrictions within the EU (free trade,
no import duties). This lead to an increase in economic activity in the tertiary sector for the UK, where
it has a comparative advantage in banking and finance, (due to specialisation).
The maturity argument states that our changing economic structure simply reflects the changing
pattern of demand that follows from economic development. This statement argues that consumer
demand in a mature economy such as the UK shifts away from goods and towards services. The
capital stock in the UK grew more

Ignoring the past, allows for a cycle of oppression and intolerance, and is the action that restricts
progress. When Louis asks the Rabbi if he could leave Prior for the better good of progress and the
future, the Rabbi replies by stating he has no solution for Louis, because Catholics believe in
Forgiveness. Jews believe in Guilt, so Louis, as Jew, will suffer by that choice (25). Although the
Rabbi is simplifying both religions, guilt is based off solely regretting past doings, while forgiveness
is based letting go of the previous wrongdoings for a better future. The two characters that identify as
Jewish, Roy and Louis, are seen as rooting all ideas societies that exclude their identities. Louis, by
idealizing past methods of progression, while Roy, completely blinded from the disease and issues
arising in current culture. Both methods are obstructive, helping spread diseases, and containing
progress.
Forgiveness and acceptance is the only way that tolerance and progression can occur. Harper

Cover To Cover Movie Vs Book
Hello and welcome to Cover to Cover , the segment where I compare and review a book and its movie
counterpart. Today, we ll be looking at The power of one , by Bryce Courtenay.
This is an American drama film, set in South Africa in times of apartheid in World War 2. It s the story
of a 6 year old boy named Peter Philip Kennith Keith , or better known as Peekay , who struggles
against the difficulties of racism, Apartheid and displays how even the power of only one, can change
a nation.
The plot within the film is quite easy to follow, staying relatively faithful to the book at the beginning,
but loses track towards the end. However, there are times where major differences and variations
occur between the two, which doesn t contribute to the film being as believable as the novel. An
example of this is what occurs during Peekay s travel to his grandpa, via the train. The sequence of
events during this travel are left out in the film, which actually left me quite confused as to where in
the film this was supposed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Close up scenes seemed to be particularly well done, with use of cutting between two subjects
(particularly in the scenes where Peekay attends boxing training). This shows the different emotions
and expressions of various characters. However, there are times where constant cutting can become
irritating and rather unnecessary. Special effects and props didn t feel as if they were believable
enough to take seriously. Use of lighting in various scenes can evoke different feelings and display
environments in a different perspective. A good example of this is where, during the piano and singing
performance by the prisoners, Piet walks along the back of a building, making his way towards the
performance, when a guard encounters him, beats him up for not telling what the prisoners are
singing, and then dies. This scene darkens all surroundings and shines exclusively on the murder at

Pan s Labyrinth Surrealism
The early Francoist period of Spain s history was filled with violence, discourse, and the beginning of
a new government. Soon after the end of the Spanish Civil War, there was still fighting going on
between the victorious Nationalists and the Republicans. The fantasy film Pan s Labyrinth depicts this
time period of Spain in a surrealist setting as it follows the adventures of a young girl, Ofelia, as she

Evolution of the Xbox Supply Chain
2012
Evolution of the Xbox Supply Chain
1.) What supply chain changes did Microsoft make between the Xbox and the Xbox 360? What was
the motivation for these changes? When Microsoft first entered the market with the release of the
Xbox in 2001 it was a newcomer in the console business. The company had neither an established
brand presence in this area, nor did it have a developed base of games and gamers in the market, such
as Sony. Therefore, the primary purpose of introducing the Xbox was to establish Microsoft in the
market, to develop a brand presence, gain acceptance among gamers and to prepare the way for future
products. Therefore, Microsoft s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, when Microsoft started the development of its next generation console the Xbox 360 it
recognized the deficits and problems related to its initial strategy: the company was operating under
too high costs in order to assure high product availability which was not the critical factor in this
business. The nature of the console business is about providing the customer with a cheap hardware
and a variety of games, in order to generate profits from games sales. Additionally, the first Xbox was
released one year behind Sony s PS2, Microsoft s biggest competitor in the market. This delay
resulted in a substantial loss of sales and consequently reduced game sales. Therefore, Microsoft
learned that the Xbox 360 had to be launched ahead of Sony s PS3. Accordingly, one relevant part of
Microsoft s new strategy was the first to market approach. Another essential change in Microsoft s
business strategy concerned its cost structure in the Xbox supply chain. Whereas the initial strategy
focused heavily on reliability, Microsoft changed its strategy to achieving reduced costs and increased
profitability. Additionally, the company insisted on owning the design of critical components, such as
the microprocessor and the graphics chip, in order to control its own destiny . Therefore, the supply
chain network needed to be redesigned in order to support Microsoft s strategic shift. So as to reach
the desired cost

which shows the colonial heritage but it also has a Craftsman style. The colonial style can be seen in
the columns, corner boards, and the front porch. This house also has a bay window which the previous

Self Conflicts In Animal Farm, By George Orwell
It s a sunny day on a Thursday afternoon and I was at the park. I look over and see my friend getting
bullied by a group a kids. I couldn t just watch it happen so I walked over to him and told the bullies
to leave. The bullies walked away and I told my friend that he needs to go and stand up for himself.
He went over there to say something, but it just made everything worse. In the story Animal Farm by
George Orwell the animals are mistreated and rebel later. Napoleon the main character takes the spot
as the leader. He has many self conflicts and conflicts with another. Nevertheless the theme it is
difficult to say who does you the most harm enemies with the worst intentions or friends with the best
is the better theme. This theme fits better because yes the owner did mistreat him and cause him pain.
But once he became the leader everyone got mad and left him. His friends who were trying to help
just made him more mad and his friends causing them to separate from each other. Napoleon lost the
people that were trying to help him beat the people who were hurting him. The theme it is difficult to
say who does you the most harm enemies with the worst intentions or friends with the best fits better.
The story Animal Farm by George Orwell states, Comrades, he said, I trust that every animal here
appreciates the sacrifice that Comrade Napoleon has made in taking this extra labour upon himself .

The Interpretation Of A Human

The Interpretation of a Human
How do a creature s actions portray them as human or monstrous? In what way do those who are not
human act or look and if not human, then what are they? In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, it is
observed that humans are characterized by showing compassion towards others and having character
flaws, but Victor s creature s grotesque physical appearance causes society to abandon him. Humans
will always have flaws and make mistakes, and this makes them human, but also shows one of the
weaknesses that humans have. When Victor has destroyed the second creature in spite of his first
creation, the malevolent creature shows up and foreshadows that something bad will happen on Victor
s wedding night. This leads Victor to narrate, The prospect did not move me to fear; yet when I
thought of my beloved Elizabeth, of her tears and endless sorrow, when she should find her lover so
barbarously snatched from her (Shelly 156). Victor thinks about himself and is blind to the notion that
his wife might possibly die. This proves that Victor s display of self centeredness is a trait that makes
him human. After Victor had discovered that his creation had been the real murderer of his relative,
William, he is shocked to find out that his cousin Justine Moritz had been accused and he says, My
tale was not one to announce publicly; its astounding horror would be looked upon as madness

Ovariohysterectomy In Dogs
Problem: Spaying a dog is a far more invasive surgery than neutering is, due to the need to enter the
abdominal cavity to remove the uterus and the ovaries in a ovariohysterectomy. The act of opening the
abdominal cavity increases the risk of infection in dogs due to exposing inner tissues and organs to a
potentially non sterile environment. To counteract the risk of infection, many doctors preemptively
prescribe antibiotics to the dogs, however, Shiloh Veterinary Hospital does not. The antibiotics usually
serve the purpose of keeping the dogs infection free, but it also contributes to the evolution of
antibiotic resistant diseases that are far more dangerous to the animals.

The Cold War Of 1945-1991
So be it
Will the United States or the Soviet Union continue propaganda or resort to an attack? Many
democracies across the world like North America, Western Europe, Japan grew in prosperity after
World War II ended. The United States became the world s wealthiest and most powerful country.
These democracies rivaled the United States economically. The United States and the Soviet Union
had many differences that didn t cause a full fled war, but a quiet, propaganda and secretive filled war
that pushed both to the edge. This was known as the Cold War of 1945 1991. The main causes of the
war were sphere of influence, Ideology, and military factors. The contradiction of who threw the first
punch still occurs today; in this case, the Soviets were most responsible for the Cold War because of
the, Iron Curtain speech, fears of the West, and the spread of communism. In conclusion, despite the
evidence that supports the United States, the Soviet Union was most responsible for the Cold War. In
the Iron Curtain Speech given by Winston Churchill gave in Fulton that describes his perspective of
how the Soviets were no longer trusted. Churchill said that Stalin hadn t fulfilled his promise to have
free elections in Poland. Stalin also made the situation worse when there were fixed elections to elect
communist governments that affected many people because of his dishonesty and selfishness when he
could ve listened to the people and keep his promises intact. In addition, Churchill

Comparison of Othello and Oedipus the King Essay
*INTRO*The character Oedipus in the play Oedipus the King by Sophocles, and the character Othello
in the play Othello the Moor of Venice by Shakespeare are both tragic characters. Oedipus ends up
killing his father, and marrying and having children with his mother, whereas Othello ends up
mistrusting and killing his wife. These two individuals have similarities and differences in several
aspects such as the roundness of their characters, the retribution that they incur upon themselves and
upon their respective wives whether directly or indirectly, and their horrors.
*BODY 1* Both Oedipus and Othello are developed into round characters. Round characters are those
that are well developed three dimensionally with multiple meaning to their ... Show more content on

Othello on the other hand is a well rounded character, and he is believable. Othello is a man who is
filled with jealousy and mistrust he learns that his wife may be sleeping with another man. Anyone
who has been in love has had this feeling once and a while, and that feeling is being fed by the person
of whom they most trust, it can be devastating for that person. As Iago continually feeds Othello s
suspicion, his hurt and mistrust grows for his wife, until he finally kills her. The character of Oedipus
is a round character, but cannot be believed due to the absurd circumstances of his marriage with
Jocasta. Othello s round character can be believed, because jealousy invades all of us at one time or
another and for Othello, he chose to act upon it much like those who act in our society today.
*BODY 2*Both Oedipus as well as Othello afflict themselves and their wives. When Oedipus learns
the truth about himself, about the overly dissipated acts of coupling with his mother and killing his
father, his wife Jocasta slays herself in embarrassment. Her death is thus an indirect result of Oedipus
wrongdoings. He then blinds himself in order to inflict self punishment. Othello on the other hand
mistakenly accuses his wife Desdemona of adultery with Cassio and hence throttles her to death.
When he later realizes that his accusation was improperly based, he is

Advantages Of Online Edu Moodle
Introduction
Over the last few decades online education has vastly grown especially in the USA. Online education
has became popular among students of all ages. Universities have increased their enrollment numbers
by creating distance learning programs. Online University programs are a convenient way for students
to further their education and has the benefit of not having to go to a geographical location. Students
can access the courses without losing any quality of education that is being taught in on site degree
programs. Many Univiersities now offer online degree programs as gives the opportunity to students
who cannot for some reason attend regular hours further their education.
Unfortunately many online courses per credit are actually more expensive than on site courses as

Starting A Business Is Easy However Maintaining The Business
Starting a business is easy however maintaining the business and growing the business is the
challenge. Big, small or medium businesses need the services of a web designer. The Internet is one of
the sources of information and operational research being one of the common reasons to do a web

Aging Out of the Foster Care System
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, every year close to 25,000 youth
age out of the foster care system and are faced with cold hard realities of adulthood. This does not
include the youth who leave the system, which is estimated to be another 30,000. Most adolescents
anticipate their eighteenth birthday, as it brings on a new found sense of independence and most
importantly a time of celebration. However when foster children reach eighteen, they begin facing the
challenges of transitioning to adulthood. These children disproportionately join the ranks of the
homeless, incarcerated, and unemployed. These youth are unprepared for the independent life they are
forced to take on. The average age that young adults who have never experienced foster care leave
their family home for good is 24, and 40% return home again at least once afterwards (Margolin,
2008). With these facts being stated, we yet expect youth who has dealt with rejection after rejection
to leave home of the state custody permanently and fin for themselves. These youth sometimes have
fewer than $250 in cash, only one third have drivers licenses, and fewer than one quarter have the
basic tools to set up a household, let alone the skills to know what to do with the tools (Krinsky,
2010). Youth exit care with no more than a garbage bag of their belongings, finding themselves alone
at the age of eighteen, with little reason to celebrate what is supposed to be an exciting milestone

The Influence of Edgar Allan Poe s Life on His Morbid...

reverential spirit simply Requiescat in Pace [?] (Alfred Lord Tennyson s reply to the Poe Memorial

Mr. Poe could not possibly send forth a book without some marks of his genius, and mixed up with the
dross we find much sterling ore. (From a review of Poe s Tales, September 6, 1845.) In 1845, Poe, 27,
and Virginia, 13, married, and were happy for a time. In 1842, Virginia ruptured a blood vessel; the
first sign of the ill health that plagued her short life. Poe turned to alcohol to cope with her illness and
the stress of his dying wife. Two years later, Virginia died of tuberculosis, and Poe s own death would
follow shortly two years after that. The Raven, published in 1845, brought Poe temporary popular and
critical acclaim. The Raven was a personal challenge Edgar imposed upon himself. Poe originally
wanted to use a parrot instead of a raven, but he felt it didn t evoke the right tone. He also wanted to
write a 100 line poem, but ended up with 108 lines, which was good enough for Poe. The one and only
novel Poe completed, Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, was about these crew members
drawing straws for who would be eaten after their boat capsized; they drew straws, and ate Richard
Parker. The book flopped. Even though Poe said it was a true story, almost all the critics didn t believe
him. They were right to since at the time Poe s book wasn t true, but just five years later a similar
wreck happened with the same lead character name Richard Parker, though there was no cannibalism.

Roof Of The World
1) I believe that there are many ways that the author has chosen to set up a man and animal as
competitors in the story On The Roof Of The World by Sir Charles G. D. Roberts.
One of the reasons that the author has set up a man and an animal as competitors is that unlike normal
circumstances where mankind is on top of the food chain, higher that every other living thing known,
in this short story, the man and the bear are on approximately the same level of the food chain. As the
bear is equipped with claws, the man evens himself out with the spear he has fashioned himself. The
author seems to write this to portray his question of, is humankind more superior to other living
species when having to live in almost the exact same conditions in ... Show more content on

D. Roberts has a lot to do with the story. The title describes the atmosphere itself and the happenings
on the Arctic. For example, imagine the entire world is a two story house. The basement of the house
is Antarctic while the first story of the house is approximately covering the bottom of the equator and
the second story is on top of the equator and the sides of the earth are the sides of the house. As you
know from a typical house with the windows unopened, the elements would not touch the basement
and the first and second stories of the house, while the sides of the house are exposed to some of the
elements. As most people know, the top of the house is exposed to almost everything the wind, rain,
snow, hail and other elements. This is the same with the roof of the earth which is the Arctic. The
arctic ranges from 50 celsius to 0 degrees celsius and in the book, it states it seemed to be the very
roof of the world, all naked to the outer cold, this flat, vast of solitude, dimly outspread beneath the
Arctic night (p. 159) which describes that nothing really happens in the Arctic like nothing would
normally happen on the roof of a

36). Teaster and Blieszner (1999) say the term distance learning has been applied to many
instructional methods: however, its primary distinction is that the teacher and the learner are separate
in space and possibly time (p. 741). However, distance learning is not a new phenomenon. The history
of distance education could be traced back to the early 1700s in the form of correspondence education,
but technology based distance education might be best linked to the introduction of audiovisual
devices into the schools in the early 1900s. With the development of the postal service in the 19th
century, commercial correspondence colleges provided distance education to students across the
country. This trend continued well into the 20th century with the advent of radio, television, and other
media that allowed learning from distance. In the last decade, distance education has changed
significantly with the use of computer mediated learning, two way interactive video, and a variety of
other technologies. Colleges and universities are forging ahead to provide learning at a distance, and
many institutions are making substantial investments in new technologies for teaching.

How Did Emily Dickinson Influence Her Work
Emily Dickinson is currently considered one of the most famous American authors, despite the fact
that her work was not well known in her own day. Emily was notable to American Literature, and she
sealed the road for several of today s poets. She was a creative poet, determined writer, and an
extreme introvert who never gave up. Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 and passed
away at age 55 on May 15, 1886. ( Emily Famous). Having grown up in poverty, it influenced her
poems greatly. Emily Dickinson s father, Edward Dickinson, was a lawyer, a member of Congress,

It is very popular because she uses this metaphor through a bird, showing that even in the hard times
we should still have hope ( Emily Study). Theres many reasons why this poem is so popular, one
being the way she puts commas around the word hope (O Connor). Hope is the Thing with Feathers is
also a very positive poem, and many people feel as if it speaks right to the heart (O Connor). There is
a lot of reviews saying that it just has a pleasant type of message (O Connor). Many people also find it
a very good description of hope, and many people love it because they feel as if they can relate to it (O
Connor). This poem was published in 1891 in the 2nd collection of Dickinson s work, Poems by
Emily Dickinson, second series ( Hope Encyclopedia). My opinion of Hope is the Thing with Feathers
would have to be that she was very clear with her message. Not only do I feel that I can relate to it, I
feel as if many other people can relate to it. That poems main point is about hope and how you should
believe in it whenever things are not looking up for you, and I think that is very true. Many times
people get discouraged and think that there is nothing left but there is, and it is hope. I highly agree
with Dickinson in her poem Hope is the Thing with Feathers . Other people who have written reviews
on the poem say that it gives them chills, and that they adored this poem

people wait patiently as death knocks on their door. In America, we can do so much to ensure that
people will live on with the donations of organs. Unfortunately, many are unaware of the amount of
people who are dying that are waiting for an organ. Organ donation is a great way to save someone s
life, and continue the life of a loved one. Although it is a great way to give someone a new life many
people are uninformed about donation and how valuable organs are. For example, did you know that

This is very difficult for some people because many do not know what organs are eligible for
donation. When people think of organ donation most think kidney and heart donation, there is so much
more than that, for example, you can donate almost any organ that you use or do not use for that
matter. You can also donate tissues such as skin, cartilage, and you can also donate bone marrow. The
waiting list for organs is never ending, as of December 15th, 2017 there are 115,930 people on the list
for an organ and for some it is their fate because they know that this is their last option to live, and
many will not make it off this list alive ( Data ). Everyday there are on average 20 people that die
awaiting an organ ( Data ). For many people, the ability to receive an organ is almost out of the
question because when an organ becomes available doctors will match the organ to the recipient with
the closest height and weight to the donor. They will also look at the medical urgency, blood, and the
size of the organ (2). If a person were to need an organ that is a rare blood type or if the organ needed
is an unusual shape or size, it will become very difficult to find a match in all categories. This is very
difficult for people to understand because you can not put a heart from a 250lbs man into a 130lbs
woman just because they have the same blood type.
Every 10 minutes a person is added to the donor list, which includes over 115,000 people awaiting

Bravery is an island in on ocean of fear. To be brave, is not to be fearless; Instead it is to be fearful, yet

Is Islam Oppressive To Women
Is Islam oppressive to women? This is the big question that scholars in religious and women s studies

Present Day Climate Change
Many people think that present day climate change is similar to paleoclimate change, but this is only
true when looking at the effects of climate change, the trends in temperature, and the trends in
greenhouse gas levels, which have all stayed the same. By applying the principle of uniformity, we
know that many of the current processes, such as plate tectonics happened in the same way in the past.
In order to use climate proxy records, we have to apply this principle to be able to compare the data
about the current and past environment with equal weight. For example, we assume that the ice cores
reacted the same way to changes in air composition and temperature in the past, such as the mid
Cretaceous, as they do today, so that we can make fair statements of whether or not the air

Because slaves were always in a household and could not speak up because of their social and
economic status, the blame was often put of them regarding illness or poor fortune (Cassar, 1993:317).
Often slaves were put in a jail cell once a year to remind them of their social standing in society
(Cassar, 1993:329).The opposite side of this social blaming system, is that of trying to bring down
those who are on the higher economic and social ladder. This can be seen majorly in the Badyaranke
tribe. During the time the study was being conducted in the Badyaranke tribe that showed that those
who have a higher socioeconomic status in the tribe can often be accused of summoning the spirit of
Ufann (a spirit who exchanges a soul for healthy crops) and preforming witchcraft on their crops to

community uses status as a means to inflict allegations of witchcraft.

The Impact Of Payment With Credit Card
Abstract: In a field experiment, we measure the impact of payment with credit card as compared with
cash on insurance company employees spending on lunch in a cafeteria. We exogenously changed
some diners payment medium from cash to a credit card by giving them an incentive to pay with a
credit card. Surprisingly, we find that credit cards do not increase spending. However, the use of credit
cards has a differential impact on spending for revolvers (who carry debt) and convenience users (who
do not): Revolvers spend less when induced to spend with a credit card, whereas convenience users
display the opposite pattern.

This decline in savings roughly coincided with a secular increase in the dissemination and use of
credit cards, raising at least the possibility that the proliferation of credit cards contributed to the
downward trend. While it is true that the total level of credit card debt is too small to account for much
of the decrease in the savings rate
(Parker 1999), it is possible that credit cards could contribute to low savings if accumulated credit card
debt is being transferred to other forms of debt, such as borrowing against real estate. Beyond the
rationale for regulation based on macroeconomic goals, there might also be a rationale for the
regulation of credit cards based on individual welfare. If credit card use leads to supra optimal
spending and ultimately to personal financial hardship, their regulation could be potentially justified
on much the same basis as the regulation of certain types of drugs, which are outlawed because they
are viewed as too tempting and dangerous. There is, in fact, some evidence of a correlation between
debt and financial distress. For example, Brown et al. (2005) observe a negative correlation between
unsecured debt, including credit card debt, and psychological well being. Brown et al. also found no
comparable relationship between secured i.e. mortgage debt and well being. But again, one cannot

The Danger Of Cyber Attacks On Power Plants
The danger of cyber attacks on power plants are something that needs to be looked at closely to avoid
costly deadly incidents. Cybersecurity has become a vital component of our world today and it needs
to evolve fast to keep up in its protection from the outside. Cybersecurity protects us from
unauthorized shutdowns, break ins, financial and social ruin. We live in a world that has become
completely reliant on computers for everything. They are able to cause chaos and even shutdown
nuclear centrifuges, air defense systems, and electrical grids. (Hathaway, Crootof, Levitiz, Nix,
Nowlan, Perdue Spiegel, 2012) Cyber attacks are more common today due to the increase capability
of technology. Important information along with every aspect of people s lives are kept on computers
or cell phones which are vulnerable at all times. An example of this would be the leaked snapchat
photos of celebrities, stolen identities and unauthorized access from an outside computer into a power
plant. In New York State we have four nuclear power plants. These nuclear power plants contribute to

Essay On Internship
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Internship is an opportunity offered by various companies to potential students or candidates, called as
interns , to work in the firm for a limited or fixed time period. Internship offers students lot of
exposure to the practical world and provides practical experiences in the industry relating to their field
of study. This becomes a valuable experience as it allows us to understand how our studies are applied
in the real world , and it gives a good picture for our Curriculum Vitae`.
Internships can also be called as job training for professional careers. Internships generally, consists
exchange of ideas and services for experience between students and organizations. Some interns find
permanent, paid programme with the organizations for which they worked. This gives a benefit to the
employer as they do not have to search for a new employee, as the interns are trained previously and
they are less demanding. Internship experiences provide the opportunity to apply classroom theories
into the real world, thus it enhances the student s academic and their career goals.
Internships in India are career specific, college and school students often choose internships based on

Important Data Compression Techniques For Reducing The...
Abstract: one of the important data compression techniques for eliminating the duplicate copies of
repeating data is the data deduplication, and has been widely used in cloud storage to reduce the
amount of storage space and save bandwidth. This method is useful when there are number of copies
that having the duplication in private cloud, which will reduce the amount of repeated files after
applying this technique we will be obtaining the files with no duplication .To protect the
confidentiality of sensitive data while supporting deduplication, the convergent encryption technique
has been proposed to encrypt the data before outsourcing. To better protect data security, this paper
makes the first attempt to formally address the problem of authorized data deduplication. Different
from the traditional deduplication systems, the differential privileges of users are further considered in
duplicate check besides the data itself. We also present several new deduplication constructions
supporting authorized duplicate check in private cloud architecture. As we are using the private cloud
architecture which makes our processing removal of the duplicate files easily. more than that security
that is been provided in this is mostly high . Security analysis demonstrates that our scheme is secure
in terms of the definitions specified in the proposed security model. As a proof of concept, we
implement a prototype of our proposed authorized duplicate check scheme and conduct testbed

Essay about Gods from Outer Space by Erich Von Daniken
Gods From Outer Space This was a very interesting book to read. Erich Von Daniken is the author,
whose previous works include The Chariots of the Gods and The Gold of the Gods which in actuality
was published after this one. This book right off the bat goes into some detail about our author. It
specifically says Erich Von Daniken is not a scholar. He is an autodidact, someone who is self taught.
That is what made his previous book so successful, due to the fact he isn t impartial on anything. He
his free of prejudice from colleagues and professors. His audience, so it seems, isn t directed towards
anyone particular group of people, but to anybody with the curiosity and willingness to imagine and to
question the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is no concrete evidence, nor will there ever likely be any. According to the good Erich Von
Daniken the methods and regulations of archeology hinder its progress to unearth the great mysteries
of our history; new means must be achieved if the world is to ever know our true origins. Over all this
book is filled with simplistic terminology, not once did I have to run to a dictionary to look up some
scientific word. With the ease and flow of the authors words, anyone should be able to pick this book
up and jump right in. It s not even necessary to read from the first page, you could jump right into
chapter 6 and know what is going on. Each chapter deals with a different unexplained mystery into our
past, sometimes taking ideas or explanations from a previous chapter and incorporating those into a
more elaborate scheme of things later on. So, if you jump into the middle of a theory it s definitely
going to make you want to go back a little and find out more detail about something he mentioned
earlier. You really don t have to go back to find out what s going on; the author just has a very bad
habit of making you think. The presentation and layout of his ideas are perfect; they always follow a
small story or some ancient folk lore that already get your mind flowing into the extremes possibilities
of ancient history. I was very eager to read this book,

Abercrombie And Fitch Strengths And Weaknesses
Abercrombie and Fitch has become a household name and you can find one of their three division
stores in your local mall and or shopping center. The stores under Abercrombie and Fitch are Hollister
and Gilly Hicks Brand. I have conducted an analysis that illustrates the strengths and weaknesses of
Abercrombie and Fitch. This company strives off of their strengths, which included customers having
great accessibility each of their divisions. They have a higher profit after they were able to close some
of their stores to focus on their stores that high profitability and revamping those. Abercrombie and
Fitch were able to get high brand names such as Ralph Lauren to help bring a fresh new style into the
store that in turn doubled the net income ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One thing that could have high effect is decline in sales due to economic stability. Clothing is a
necessity but expensive clothing isn t so it is important that this brand make an experience and
clothing that customers will want to indulge in no matter what financial situation. For this threat the
recommendation that I have is producing high quality products. If I am having a hard time and I don t
want to continually spend money on a good pair of jeans I will splurge and by a few so that I don t
have to waist my money on buying tens of pair of pants quality over quantity. Other factors that post a
threat to Abercrombie and Fitch are other stores and competition such as H M, Macys and Nordstrom.
If this brand can offer consumers what the others can t I believe than can eliminate any competition in
their way. The fact Abercrombie and Fitch has different divisions it defiantly gives them a leg up on
the completion because their exposure is greater. The last threat is trends, it is very important as a
brand to have up to date items in their store. Teens are always looking to their favorite stores for the
latest fashions crave, it is important to them to stay in style. Making sure they are current will help
them not get left behind by their competitors. All in all, Abercrombie and Fitch has what it takes to
continue to grow their business to keep reaching new

The Role Of Fashion During The 1920 S
The 1920 s was a time of great change. (Some changes that happened during 1920s were the nation s
wealth doubled, more americans lived in the cities, advancements in technology, and women being
able to vote.) One big change that occurred during the 1920 s social shift was the fashion industry.
Fashion is something that reflects the beliefs and social standards of that time. This industry, along
with others, had an immense boom during the 1920s. The evolution of fashion during this decade is
described as ... abandoning fussiness and unnecessary details (Anne McEvoy). Fashion played an
important role in the 1920s, for it was a reflection of a period of escapism, women s independence, a
relaxation of morals and standards, and the evolving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women were looking to become their own person, they wore comfortable and colorful clothing, they
worked, and they went to parties. For once they wanted to live for themselves. A flapper is one women
most people associate with the 1920s. Flappers were generally young women who bobbed their hair
(cut it short). They wore short, loose fitting dresses and enhanced their faces with makeup (Cynthia
Johnson and Lawrence W. Backer). Being a flapper was one way women could be independent and
not be highly criticized for.
Flappers weren t just recognized for the fashionable clothes, it described their unconventional attitudes
and behavior ( Anne McEvoy). Flappers and young women in the 1920s used fashion as a way to
speak for them, wearing certain things to let other people know that they wanted to be more free and
modern as a society. Flappers and young women weren t the only women who wanted change, older
women wanted change too, by fighting for their right to vote. They also used fashion to reflect what
they were fighting for. Many liberated suffragettes wore bright red lipstick as a symbol of their
newfound voices ( by Cynthia Johnston and Lawrence W. Backer). Women s independence was one of
the biggest social changes that occurred.
Women and men started to become more laid back and relaxed about the high expectation that were
expected from the older generations. On both sides of the Atlantic life was now fun, one

Financial Research Analyst
The job that I will be researching is a financial research analyst. As a financial research analyst, they
analyze companies and make suggestions whether to buy, hold, or sell stocks to investors. Salary wise,
a research analyst makes an average, but occasionally higher amount. Entry level analysts who have
just started working often earn around $30,000, whereas analysts with many years of experience and
works at a relatively large company can make more than $100,000.[1] To become a financial research
analyst, there is a specific education path that one should follow. Starting in high school, it is
recommended to take any available business courses, such as Introduction to Business or Business

For traits, one has to be hard working, organized, and decisive. As an analyst, there is most likely
going to be a large amount of work being handed to you at a time, so the more of a hard worker they
are, the more likely they will be able to complete all the given tasks in a certain time period and will
be able to tolerate it. Because financial research analysts are given multiple projects at a time, being
organized is key. They must not lose anything because it may have very important and they must
know where everything is, in order to juggle all the responsibilities while finishing the work within the
given time period. Another trait needed is being decisive. As an analyst, much of the job is to make
suggestions whether to buy, hold, or sell stocks to investors. They must make the decision in a quick
manner as the stock market changes practically every minute. So if an analyst cannot decide between
buying, holding, or selling quick enough, the client will most likely stop coming, due to inability to
provide the information promised. For skills, a financial research analyst must have communication
skills, math skills, and research skills. A major part of the job is to consult with clients and explain to
them the information collected. This is depend on their ability to create good working relationships. In
order to collect the information needed, many

Honey Bees Persuasive Speech Research Paper
Have you ever thought about a world with little to no food? In a world without bees, this could be a
possibility. Today, I ll be talking about the decline in the bee population and how it will affect every
single one of us if it continues. I ve always been interested in bees. After joining my school s Future
Farmers of America group, I started working on entomology, which is the study of bugs. When my
group went to the state competition for entomology, I became even more interested in bees and the
cause of the decline in their populations. This speech should inform you of the decline in the bee
population and how it will affect all of our lives. All over the world bees have slowly begun to die out.

you ve learned. By telling others about what s happening to the bees, more people are informed about
the subject. The more people that are informed about the subject, the more people care about the
subject. This could potentially cause a change in society to help us all become more bee

El Greco Fallacy Reaction Paper
Reaction Paper 2 Firestone and School s (2014) research aims to use the logic of the El Greco Fallacy
in order to rule out top down effects on perception. The theory of the El Greco Fallacy is that this
Spanish artist who painted distorted figures could not have had a perceptual problem, like
astigmatism, because the distorted perceptions would cancel out when he looked at the canvas, leaving
no distortion. This theory was applied to two case studies involving perceptual effects. Firestone and
Scholl wanted to determine if the evidence was lacking a hypothesis that the perceptual effects should
not occur. The hypothesis tested by Firestone and Scholl (2014) is that if the logic of the El Greco
Fallacy is applied to the existing case studies, then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each replicated case study also showed the presumed perceptual effects, as well as the El Greco
Fallacy effect. Case study 1, which examined spatial perception, included experiments 1 3. In
experiment 1 the subjects were randomly assigned to hold a rod or not and then to view one of two
apertures. The subjects were also told that during the experiment they would have to walk through the
aperture (although this was purposeful misinformation); these were the independent variables. The
dependent variable of experiment 1 was that the subject had to determine the width of the aperture
after imagining walking through it. The experimenter held a measuring tape and directed the subject to
give an exact measurement. Experiment 2 replicated experiment 1, except instead of using a
measuring tape, the experimenter had a second aperture. The subject had the experimenter maneuver
the aperture to be the same width as the original aperture, again after imagining walking through the
aperture. Experiment 2 introduces the El Greco Fallacy if there was in fact a visual perception effect,
then the subjects

Lopburi Monkey Banquet Essay
Enjoy One of Thailand s Most Unusual Festivals: Lopburi Monkey Banquet!
The yearly Monkey Banquet, held on the last Sunday of November, takes place in the central Thai
province of Lopburi.
Whilst monkeys roam freely around the old part of town all throughout the year, this special day is
dedicated entirely to the mischievous and cheeky macaques. A sight to behold, join in with monkey
related games and activities, shop for monkey themed goodies, watch in amazement as the macaques
descend on huge tables laden with food and drinks, gaze with a mixture of fascination and
bemusement at the enormous monkey statues, and, overall, be a part of something truly unique!

Despite the myths and legends surrounding the Lopburi monkeys, the Monkey Banquet is a fairly new
festival, having begun in 2007. Sponsored by the Lopburi Inn Hotel, the festival is to pay respects to
the Monkey God and all monkeys in general, thank the local monkeys for bringing prosperity to the
town, and also to draw in tourists.
Monkey mayhem!
Food for the Monkey Banquet is donated by local individuals and businesses with the belief that it will
further their good fortunes.
Fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds, boiled eggs, bottles of water, and even cartons and cans of
juice are offered to the monkeys. Used to stealing from innocent passers by, the dexterous creatures
have no problems at all opening containers!
The veritable feast is lovingly set out on big tables ready for the party to begin. The monkeys grab,
shove, snatch, and clamber their way to get to their favourites, crudely tossing what they don t fancy
on the floor. Plates are overturned, food is gobbled, drinks are gulped and spilled, and the monkeys
enjoy the feeling of a really full belly!

Macbeth Change Throughout The Play
The story Macbeth being a lot of interesting and exciting drama to the audience. In my opinion this
script in modern times, shows the human greed for power and respect. It shows how people cannot be
happy with what they currently have. That is why Macbeth loses his and his wife s live over greed.
After reading the play Macbeth, I could imagine him as a muscular, tall, short hair, blond, with a scar
on his right eye. Through understanding Macbeth, I can conclude that his mental traits are courageous,
dependent, and greedy. Macbeth s emotions change over time; however, he turned from a kind hearted
person, to a careless and depressed individual. Macbeth s biggest obstacle is relying his fate on
witches that clam that they know his path. Therefore, listening to these witches and doing everything
to follow the path they chose for him, he turns from a kind, loyal, and honorable person to a tyrant.
The weird sisters play the fate of Macbeth s life, they change Macbeth and brainwash him to follow
their sayings. I portray the witches as undead, pale colored, human beings with missing chunks of
skin, also, they rise from the ground every time they want to perform with black smoke around them.

The Inciting Incident is when Macbeth realizes that the witches told him the truth that he would
become thane of Cawdor. Therefore, he would be king because the witches can predict the future.
Macbeth faces many external crisis while following the witches saying, such as his wife pressuring
him to kill Duncan. Moreover, he faces internal crisis, such as Macbeth losing his moral and mentality
after Banquo is murdered, and feels guilty when he kills the king. The climax of the play is when
Duncan is killed, and Macbeth takes the throne. The play is resolved when Macbeth dies and loses his
position as the

  • 2. Essay on Hector Tobar s The Tattooed Soldier Downtown Los Angeles is one of the busiest commercial centers in the United States. However, the city holds two groups of people in different economic level the homeless and the working class. Hector Tobar frequently includes the landscape of the setting in downtown Los Angeles in The Tattooed Soldier. The novel is about two immigrants from Guatemala who have moved to Los Angeles. Antonio can observe these buildings that illustrate an ideal life, but he belongs to none of the qualities that are associated with these buildings. The people who are inside these buildings are having a good life, but Antonio is homeless; he does not even have money to rent a shelter to protect himself. The structure of the freeways illustrates the lack of freedom in the protagonist s social life. In the beginning of the story, the author uses sleep under the freeway repetitively to emphasize Antonio s low social status (9). Freeways represent work and economic activity, but Antonio has fallen off the track. He is now under the freeway because he has dropped from the flow of the busy city life to the lowest level in Los Angeles. Antonio was a scholar in Guatemala, but he works as a bus boy and later becomes homeless after he moved to Los Angeles. The author states, Los Angeles made him [Antonio] short (53). • 5. Imagery In The Perils Of Indifference By Elie Wiesel Holocaust survivor and writer, Elie Wiesel in his influential speech The Perils of Indifference, claims that indifference is the root of all evil and inhumanity all pain and all tragedy has resulted because of indifference. He supports his claim by highlighting the reason for World Wars, Civil Wars, Assassinations, Bloodbaths, and Tragedy indifference (Wiesel par. 5) . Specifically, Wiesel uses imagery to paint an image of what the innocent victims of indifference experience. The poor children [that] perish because of the indifference in a man s soul; until they see the children s pain and agony and hear their pleas, until one of them dies because of the violence, disease and famine, then one will notice the dangers of indifference (Wiesel par. 23) . Further, the author flashbacks to past events that have left humans without a soul. He mentions how one day he woke up in a place of eternal infamy, Buchenwald. Remembering the day he is captured and the day he is free[ed] (Wiesel par. 1) . The problem now is that there [i]s no joy in his heart; he becomes a victim of indifference the metal torture (Wiesel par. 1) . Wiesel s purpose is to inform humanity of the dangers indifference holds in order to encourage humans to continue to hope for a world without indifference no pain, no horror. He establishes a critical tone for readers by using stylistic devices such as imagery, flashbacks and rhetorical questions in order to achieve his purpose that indifference is monstrous and dangerous. Wiesel s message about the inhumanity of indifference and the importance of resistance is still relevant today. 1999 marks the year Elie Wiesel presents the White House with his speech The Perils of Indifference. He argues that to be indifferent is to be inhumane (Wiesel par 11) . Four years later genocide in Darfur occurs; the first genocide of the 21st century (Darfur Genocide) . However, very limited data are available regarding the association of subclinical inflammation and insulin resistance with NAFLD in a prediabetic state. We, therefore, conducted the study to assess this relationship among this population. Methods: We studied a cross sectional analytical design of 140 [male/female, 77/63; age in years (ranges), 45 (25 68)] prediabetic subjects after confirming with 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). The diagnosis of NAFLD was made by ultrasonic examination of the liver and divided into groups of without NAFLD (n = 63) and NAFLD (n = 77). All individuals underwent anthropometric and clinical examinations. Among laboratory investigations, serum glucose was estimated by glucose oxidase method, serum lipid profile and liver enzymes were measured by the enzymatic colorimetric method and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. Serum insulin and high sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP) were measured by enzyme immunoassay technique. Insulin resistance (HOMA IR) was calculated by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA). Results: There was significantly higher levels of hsCRP (2.82 ± 1.60 vs. 1.39 ± 0.66 mg/l, P 0.001) and HOMA IR (4.03 ± 1.39 vs. 1.98 ± 1.04, P 0.001) in NAFLD subjects ... By 1995 there were only 383,000 people employed in the primary sector. This shows a decrease of 818,000 employees over 31 years. As a result there was a decline in output and employment. A prime example is steel, the substitute being aluminium. International competition had a dramatic affect on UK structure. Changing consumer tastes, the creation of new products and the changing comparative costs result in the redistribution of economic activity around the world. For example the Japanese were able to produce more reliable motorcycles at a cheaper cost and therefore there was a decline in the UK motorcycle industry, because Japan had a comparative advantage. The membership of the EU meant some inevitable restructuring of the UK economy, in accordance with European comparative advantages, as there were no trade restrictions within the EU (free trade, no import duties). This lead to an increase in economic activity in the tertiary sector for the UK, where it has a comparative advantage in banking and finance, (due to specialisation). The company had neither an established brand presence in this area, nor did it have a developed base of games and gamers in the market, such as Sony. This leads Victor to narrate, The prospect did not move me to fear; yet when I thought of my beloved Elizabeth, of her tears and endless sorrow, when she should find her lover so barbarously snatched from her (Shelly 156). Victor thinks about himself and is blind to the notion that his wife might possibly die. This proves that Victor s display of self centeredness is a trait that makes him human. • 23. Comparison of Othello and Oedipus the King Essay *INTRO*The character Oedipus in the play Oedipus the King by Sophocles, and the character Othello in the play Othello the Moor of Venice by Shakespeare are both tragic characters. Oedipus ends up killing his father, and marrying and having children with his mother, whereas Othello ends up mistrusting and killing his wife. These two individuals have similarities and differences in several aspects such as the roundness of their characters, the retribution that they incur upon themselves and upon their respective wives whether directly or indirectly, and their horrors. *BODY 1* Both Oedipus and Othello are developed into round characters. Othello on the other hand is a well rounded character, and he is believable. Othello is a man who is filled with jealousy and mistrust he learns that his wife may be sleeping with another man. Anyone who has been in love has had this feeling once and a while, and that feeling is being fed by the person of whom they most trust, it can be devastating for that person. As Iago continually feeds Othello s suspicion, his hurt and mistrust grows for his wife, until he finally kills her. The character of Oedipus is a round character, but cannot be believed due to the absurd circumstances of his marriage with Jocasta. Othello s round character can be believed, because jealousy invades all of us at one time or another and for Othello, he chose to act upon it much like those who act in our society today. *BODY 2*Both Oedipus as well as Othello afflict themselves and their wives. When Oedipus learns the truth about himself, about the overly dissipated acts of coupling with his mother and killing his father, his wife Jocasta slays herself in embarrassment. Her death is thus an indirect result of Oedipus wrongdoings. He then blinds himself in order to inflict self punishment. Othello on the other hand mistakenly accuses his wife Desdemona of adultery with Cassio and hence throttles her to death. When he later realizes that his accusation was improperly based, he is ... Aging Out of the Foster Care System According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, every year close to 25,000 youth age out of the foster care system and are faced with cold hard realities of adulthood. This does not include the youth who leave the system, which is estimated to be another 30,000. Most adolescents anticipate their eighteenth birthday, as it brings on a new found sense of independence and most importantly a time of celebration. However when foster children reach eighteen, they begin facing the challenges of transitioning to adulthood. These children disproportionately join the ranks of the homeless, incarcerated, and unemployed. These youth are unprepared for the independent life they are forced to take on. The average age that young adults who have never experienced foster care leave their family home for good is 24, and 40% return home again at least once afterwards (Margolin, 2008). With these facts being stated, we yet expect youth who has dealt with rejection after rejection to leave home of the state custody permanently and fin for themselves. These youth sometimes have fewer than $250 in cash, only one third have drivers licenses, and fewer than one quarter have the basic tools to set up a household, let alone the skills to know what to do with the tools (Krinsky, 2010). This decline in savings roughly coincided with a secular increase in the dissemination and use of credit cards, raising at least the possibility that the proliferation of credit cards contributed to the downward trend. While it is true that the total level of credit card debt is too small to account for much of the decrease in the savings rate (Parker 1999), it is possible that credit cards could contribute to low savings if accumulated credit card debt is being transferred to other forms of debt, such as borrowing against real estate. Beyond the rationale for regulation based on macroeconomic goals, there might also be a rationale for the regulation of credit cards based on individual welfare. If credit card use leads to supra optimal spending and ultimately to personal financial hardship, their regulation could be potentially justified on much the same basis as the regulation of certain types of drugs, which are outlawed because they are viewed as too tempting and dangerous. According to the good Erich Von Daniken the methods and regulations of archeology hinder its progress to unearth the great mysteries of our history; new means must be achieved if the world is to ever know our true origins. Over all this book is filled with simplistic terminology, not once did I have to run to a dictionary to look up some scientific word. With the ease and flow of the authors words, anyone should be able to pick this book up and jump right in. It s not even necessary to read from the first page, you could jump right into chapter 6 and know what is going on. Each chapter deals with a different unexplained mystery into our past, sometimes taking ideas or explanations from a previous chapter and incorporating those into a more elaborate scheme of things later on. So, if you jump into the middle of a theory it s definitely going to make you want to go back a little and find out more detail about something he mentioned earlier. You really don t have to go back to find out what s going on; the author just has a very bad habit of making you think. The presentation and layout of his ideas are perfect; they always follow a small story or some ancient folk lore that already get your mind flowing into the extremes possibilities of ancient history. The stores under Abercrombie and Fitch are Hollister and Gilly Hicks Brand. I have conducted an analysis that illustrates the strengths and weaknesses of Abercrombie and Fitch. This company strives off of their strengths, which included customers having great accessibility each of their divisions. They have a higher profit after they were able to close some of their stores to focus on their stores that high profitability and revamping those. Abercrombie and Fitch were able to get high brand names such as Ralph Lauren to help bring a fresh new style into the store that in turn doubled the net income ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One thing that could have high effect is decline in sales due to economic stability. Clothing is a necessity but expensive clothing isn t so it is important that this brand make an experience and clothing that customers will want to indulge in no matter what financial situation. For this threat the recommendation that I have is producing high quality products. If I am having a hard time and I don t want to continually spend money on a good pair of jeans I will splurge and by a few so that I don t have to waist my money on buying tens of pair of pants quality over quantity. Other factors that post a threat to Abercrombie and Fitch are other stores and competition such as H M, Macys and Nordstrom. If this brand can offer consumers what the others can t I believe than can eliminate any competition in their way. The fact Abercrombie and Fitch has different divisions it defiantly gives them a leg up on the completion because their exposure is greater. The last threat is trends, it is very important as a brand to have up to date items in their store. Teens are always looking to their favorite stores for the latest fashions crave, it is important to them to stay in style. Making sure they are current will help them not get left behind by their competitors. All in all, Abercrombie and Fitch has what it takes to continue to grow their business to keep reaching new ... Flappers and young women in the 1920s used fashion as a way to speak for them, wearing certain things to let other people know that they wanted to be more free and modern as a society. Flappers and young women weren t the only women who wanted change, older women wanted change too, by fighting for their right to vote. They also used fashion to reflect what they were fighting for. • 46. El Greco Fallacy Reaction Paper Reaction Paper 2 Firestone and School s (2014) research aims to use the logic of the El Greco Fallacy in order to rule out top down effects on perception. The theory of the El Greco Fallacy is that this Spanish artist who painted distorted figures could not have had a perceptual problem, like astigmatism, because the distorted perceptions would cancel out when he looked at the canvas, leaving no distortion. This theory was applied to two case studies involving perceptual effects. Firestone and Scholl wanted to determine if the evidence was lacking a hypothesis that the perceptual effects should not occur. The subjects were also told that during the experiment they would have to walk through the aperture (although this was purposeful misinformation); these were the independent variables. The dependent variable of experiment 1 was that the subject had to determine the width of the aperture after imagining walking through it. The experimenter held a measuring tape and directed the subject to give an exact measurement. Experiment 2 replicated experiment 1, except instead of using a measuring tape, the experimenter had a second aperture. The subject had the experimenter maneuver the aperture to be the same width as the original aperture, again after imagining walking through the aperture. In my opinion this script in modern times, shows the human greed for power and respect. It shows how people cannot be happy with what they currently have. That is why Macbeth loses his and his wife s live over greed. After reading the play Macbeth, I could imagine him as a muscular, tall, short hair, blond, with a scar on his right eye. Through understanding Macbeth, I can conclude that his mental traits are courageous, dependent, and greedy. Macbeth s emotions change over time; however, he turned from a kind hearted person, to a careless and depressed individual. Macbeth s biggest obstacle is relying his fate on witches that clam that they know his path. Therefore, listening to these witches and doing everything to follow the path they chose for him, he turns from a kind, loyal, and honorable person to a tyrant. The weird sisters play the fate of Macbeth s life, they change Macbeth and brainwash him to follow their sayings.
