The background is a light grey to not be overpowering. Black is used for the masthead to make it stand out from the text. Red is used for headlines and kickers to draw attention. White is used for cover text and the menu strip for simplicity. Graphic features and flashes use colors like red, yellow and black for visual interest. The conventions of mastheads, headlines, images, captions and menus are included and positioned consistently with real magazines. Color choices create a
- The key image on film magazine covers is usually a close-up of the main character from the featured film.
- The main cover line describing the feature is emboldened below the image to attract attention.
- Magazines aim to match their color scheme to the genre and style of the featured film.
- Film magazines may be declining as audiences can access reviews and information online for free rather than purchasing physical copies. Other forms of film marketing also compete for audiences' attention.
The document analyzes magazine covers, contents pages, and double page spreads from various music magazines. Key findings include the importance of an eye-catching masthead and cover photo, using color schemes consistently, and balancing photos and text on pages. The analysis provided ideas on layouts, fonts, and connecting visuals and writing. Overall, researching real magazines helped understand effective design principles to apply to the author's own music magazine.

Emily aims to keep her layouts clean yet visually interesting through hand drawn illustrations and layered images with text.
This document provides information about Corinne Day, a photographer known for her raw and genuine fashion photography in the 1990s. It discusses how Day brought more reality to fashion photography by capturing the natural beauty of her models without dramatization. Her style was self-taught and gave photos a less glossy look. Her images from this era came to be known as "grunge" and helped popularize that international style. The document also analyzes some of Day's specific photos, including her 1993 shots of Kate Moss for British Vogue that portrayed feelings of loneliness through Moss's solitary and undressed poses looking out a window. These images helped establish Moss's thin, androgynous look that became a trend known

This document summarizes 10 photo shoots conducted by the author for a youth magazine. Shoot 1 took portraits of 5 models in a forest. Shoot 2 featured a subject relaxing in her bedroom. Shoot 3 documented friends socializing at fast food restaurants and in their cars. Shoot 4 captured candid moments of students on a college campus. Shoot 5 portrayed the author's friendship with her best friend during a picnic. Shoot 6 showed a friend relaxing at home. Shoot 7 aimed to feature a subject with sparklers but focused more on him with his girlfriend. Shoot 8 similarly featured another subject in his car. Shoot 9 and 10 took portraits of two friends in a kitchen. The shoots utilized various locations and styles to represent different individuals and relationships.
The document discusses experiments the author conducted to develop techniques for manipulating photographs to achieve a gritty, raw aesthetic for their magazine. This included taking Polaroid photos, editing exposures and highlights in Lightroom, pixelating models' eyes, duplicating and adjusting opacity layers to create a "glitch" effect, and adding handwritten text over images scanned at different opacities. The author tested different methods like a graphics tablet and Photoshop but found scanning produced the neatest writing for the magazine.
This document provides information about several photographers and magazines. It discusses Corinne Day's raw style of fashion photography in the 1990s which portrayed a more realistic look. It also covers Drew Jarrett's natural style of capturing moments without dramatization. The document summarizes 93 Magazine which showcases up-and-coming talents in Manchester, and Vogue Magazine which has been influential globally since the early 20th century by covering fashion, beauty and culture across 23 international editions.
The document provides details on 10 planned photo shoots for a magazine about Generation Z. Shoot 1 will take place in woods and capture group shots of models socializing. Shoot 2 will take place in a bedroom and feature portraits of a model relaxing. Shoot 3 will document models eating at a fast food restaurant. Shoot 4 will capture students at college. Shoot 5 will feature portraits of two models on a picnic. Shoots 6-8 will capture portraits of individual models. Shoots 9-10 will document two male models who are gamers in a bedroom. The document also outlines plans for layouts, models, context pages, color schemes, and text for the magazine.
The document discusses plans for a magazine layout and photoshoots. It will have an "organized clutter" layout with layered images and text over images. The color scheme will be earth tones and black and white with pops of color. A planned shoot in Easingwold woods will get group shots and black and white portraits of friends to capture socializing among Generation Z. Another planned night shoot with sparklers aims to get interesting effects with the models backlit against trees. The magazine will feature various models photographed in locations around Yorkshire and Scotland.
The document discusses experiments the author conducted to develop techniques for her magazine's aesthetic. She took polaroid photos to capture the raw, gritty style she wanted. She also edited photos in Lightroom to refine images while maintaining a blurry, documentary style. Additional experiments included pixelating models' eyes and drawing on prints to anonymize subjects while conveying characteristics of Generation Z. The author also played with opacity layers to create a glitchy effect and tested different writing methods like a graphics tablet, scanning, and Photoshop to incorporate text snippets in a way that breaks up the photos without overwhelming the magazine.
The document discusses experiments Emily Grace Porter conducted for her magazine focused on Generation Z. She took polaroid photos of a model to capture the raw aesthetic she wanted. She edited the photos in Lightroom to refine images while maintaining a blurry, gritty look. She also tested pixelating models' eyes and drawing on printouts to anonymize subjects while conveying that people cannot be labeled by one characteristic. The magazine will include short texts to break up the photos and allow pauses for reading to keep viewers engaged.
The document summarizes the research process of Emily Grace Porter for her magazine concept. She began by researching influential photographers and published magazines to draw inspiration from their style and audience. Halfway through her research, she decided to change the style of her magazine from a fashion photography magazine to a social culture photography magazine after discovering 93 Magazine and being inspired by their raw photography aesthetic. She then had the idea to create an Instagram profile to help promote and expand the reach of her magazine's content online to a wider audience.
Emily conducted research on her client's target audience and business to understand who to market the product to. This included looking at the client's Instagram and gathering demographic information. She created personas and questionnaires to learn more about her audience.
Emily developed concepts and ideas through mood boards and diagrams. Her production took place abroad where she was able to capture images that matched the client's aesthetic of being natural and luxurious.
The client was very pleased with the images Emily provided for the website, saying they fit perfectly and lifted the overall site. Feedback also noted the professional quality and clear concept achieved, while suggesting varying the model's costume.
The client asked Emily Grace Porter to take photos for their New Zealand eco-friendly drink company EcoThirst. They wanted images for Instagram and their website that portrayed their high-end luxury product in a natural outdoor setting to match their brand aesthetic. The client used two of Emily's photos as the opening and closing images in their website slideshow. They also posted two of her Instagram photos that received average likes. The client was pleased that Emily's professional images matched their own style and promoted their summer product build up.
The document provides information for a client project for Ecothirst, a company that produces glass tea infuser bottles. It includes mind maps and brainstorms for project ideas, including Instagram advertisements showing models using the product in different climates and locations, and an A7 brochure highlighting the product. Example mood boards and a mind map are shown. Developed ideas include natural photography shoots for the Instagram ads, product-focused photos in different settings, and a pocket-sized, 20-page brochure illustrating each product over two pages with an eco-friendly theme. The suitability, audience engagement, and manageability of the project ideas within the timeframe are assessed. A 4-week production plan is outlined.

Empire magazine is a British magazine, published by Bauer Consumer
media, on a monthly basis. The magazine includes: film news, previews,
reviews, articles of other/ future films etc. The magazine focuses on the
big blockbusters rather than smaller, less known about films. The magazine
is also sponsored by Barclay's Bank, this shows through a collaboration
with such a big company that Empire is successful and will continue to be
so.
Colour โ If you strip back the front cover, taking away the main images and the
background image, usually Empire sticks to the same colour scheme of red,
black and white. They use the images to add the colour, also doing this makes
each issue themed around the main film being feature that month. For
example in the bottom right corner shows Empire's "the last Jedi" issue which is
kept very minimal with the fonts colours using only white and blue and having
the image and background have the only other colour which is still a shade of
blue and the clothing is minimal earth colours. The magazine focuses on the
theme and keeps to it creating an aesthetically pleasing cover which is eye

4. Empire's website is very easy to navigate as it has different
headers at the top of the page and the main articles feature on
the home page with pictures and a little more information
under the article name. All the articles link to the film industry
in someway, either feeling about a film or someone in the
business, each one has something different yet all within the
film industry.
Layout/ design - The colours are basic, expect the traditional
Empire red that they usually use for their mastheads (although
Empire has changed the colour in the past to fit with the theme
of the issue โ font never changed) their isn't another colours
used on the website. Due to using a lot of photos, the photos
add enough colour and therefore anther colour would simple

In my opinion the website is more effective than the magazine,
even though the magazine has a better look, the website is easy
to navigate than the magazine and also all the information is
free of the website unlike the ยฃ3.99 charge of the magazine.

Personally LOVE is my favourite magazine, not just for content but for
the appearance also. The front cover is always fun and colourful, even
if its kept simple and bare they always make it different from anything
they've done before and stand out. One of my favourite feature of the
design is the masthead, they always keep the same font but dress it
up in a way which suits the theme of the issue, they also never use
the same design of a masthead more than once again adding to each
issue being completely different and yet you always know its LOVE
Magazine.

12. MY FIRST ATTEMPT AT DESIGNING A MAGAZINE FRONT COVER
PHOTGRAPHY MAGAZINEFASHION MAGAZINEFILM MAGAZINE
14. FRONT COVER & DOUBLE-PAGE SPREAD
Software used: Photoshop, InDesign.
For my practice both my front covers and double page spreads are created using both adobe
software's. I edit every aspect in photoshop before laying everything out and placing it all together
on InDesign.
I made a film, photography and fashion magazine front cover, I looked at other exampled of publish
magazines and learnt the codes and conventions of the different types and how the layout is key in
interpreting each different type of magazine. For example, for a fashion magazine, usually the
model is looking at the camera creating a form of address to the reader, also the model is usually
slightly overlaying the masthead.
For my double page spread, I based it off a geographic magazine and chose to feature one of the 7
wonders of the world, Machu Picchu. I had an image of the destination as my backdrop spreading
across both pages, I then added a column and that where I placed information about the 7th
wonder. I placed a title on the 2nd page, placed in the sky of the image of Machu Picchu. I wanted
the main image to flow over both pages, I wanted both pages to be seen as one and the best way to
do this was spread across both pages with either an image or text.
16. Website Builders
Websites used: Wix.com and Yola.com
I created two practice website designs using two different websites. I used Wix.com to make a milkshake based
website. This website out of the two I found the best and easiest, even though I do find it challenging and
confusing at times there are short learning lessons available that help you build the website the way you want.
After choosing a website layout you like the look of you can start with that layout and just add your own
images and context. There is so many designs available and one feature which I felt if I couldnโt use my own it
would ruin my authenticity with linking all 3 (front cover, DSP and website) was my title font and Wix.com lets
you add your own fonts to their already existing long list.
Yola.com was a lot harder to work around, I found it very confusing and I could only work out in the hour I
spent on the site how to make a very basic design, I felt compared to Wix.com the features and design aspect
available just didnโt add up with quality and creativity. I made a charity site based around saving endangered
tigers, I like the design I came up with but only because it fits the content. It needed to be simple with the
attention on the endangered animals, but I want a more complex and creative design/layout when it comes to
making my own website for my magazine.
18. PROPOSAL
Working title: PRINTISDEAD (Print Is Dead)
Audience:
๏ 18-30 age range
Due to more of the mature photography featured and the people featuring in the magazine are all adults who are
involved in one of the 3 industries feature (fashion, photography, art), younger readers who are younger than 18
wont be able to relate to the content.
๏ Predominantly Female readers
PrintIsDead wont be aimed towards a specific gender as sexuality is a subject that will be celebrated and brought
to light. Although the content is proven to be more appealing to the female sex as fashion magazines are
dominated towards female sales.
๏ ABC1 Audience
The advertisements featured will be that of high end brands and therefore an ABC1 audience more likely to buy
the products being advertised.
๏ Psychographic: Achiever, Balanced
The content of lifestyle, life of society and fashion attract achievers because they reflect the way of life they or
success they want/have.
19. RATIONALE
So far this year I've worked on advertisement and short film The advertising project was based around the soft drink
IRN BRU, I had to create a print advertisement, a advergame and a tv advert. And for the film rotation I produced a
60 seconds short film that had to feature the time in some form and the statement, "That wasnโt supposed to
happen".
Before starting this course I'd never used any software other than Microsoft software's. I've had to adapt to the
adobe software's and so far have used and gained knowledge for Photoshop, premier pro and InDesign. By getting
myself used to photoshop and InDesign before my print project has giving me confidence and make me egger to
complete my print project. The advertising project taught me the most in terms of photoshop, it allowed me to
explore the different aspects and also realise what to look out for when linking software's, for example in photoshop
the sizing is very important if you're following your work through to InDesign. Also I spent the majority of the project
on photoshop as I kept getting the proportions off with my background I was making, therefore with my print
project I want to sketch and had a visual plan before I start the process of production. My print project will consist of
creating a front cover, double-page spread and a website template for my magazine.
20. PROJECT CONCEPT - PRINTISDEAD
This magazine is about the fashion, beauty, photography, life of society (celebrity/influencers/professionals), lifestyle and
art. PrintIsDead s a fashion photography magazine that features lifestyle and beauty, unlike most fashion magazines that
focus primarily on fashion, PrintIsDead is fashion photography dominated, with other images more like inventive
snapshots, and aesthetically pleasing imagery, concentrating on the artistic aspects of photography, rather than
technique aspects. The photography aspect isn't much technical rather focusing on the pictures themselves.
Fashion and art are celebrated through mature scenes, from grittily body imagery to the breathtakingly artistic
photography, contrasting the fun and youthful energy through the colourful colour pallet and people featured. One
influential person (from either fashion, art, photography industry) will feature on the cover and feature on double-page
spread about themselves, what's recent and what's to come. Advertisements for top brands predominantly from the
fashion industry but also new unique products that intrigue and show usage for my audience.
My research will start with a questionnaire that I'll create on surveymokey.com. In this questionnaire I'll ask people on
their reactions to the idea of PrintIsDead and also ill ask questions on the concept, what they would like to see
featured and what design elements they're looking for. I made a similar questionnaire before creating my short film, this
allowed me to gather answers to aspects I wasnโt sure about from audience members themselves, by asking people who
fit the target audience helps benefit the development as I'm hearing from the people who would but the magazine what
they want to see in it.
I'll create my front cover and double-page spread through InDesign but edit all the aspects through photoshop, this
allows me to get the best quality work and also have the layout as professional looking as possible. My website template
will be make through the website builder Wix, The same type of content as the print version just more
content available and everything systematically placed out.
21. EVALUATION PLAN
My idea has the potential to fail due to the uniqueness of the magazine and because of this
requires atypical minds looking for quirky and different imagery and concepts but also fashion
lovers who like keeping up with the celebrities society. The audience is narrow yet that narrow
audience is a big audience, due to all the linked industries I want to incorporate in the magazine
through photo collections, articles and features. In my evaluation, once completed my project
will consist of a questionnaire filled out by the same participants from my research
questionnaire, this is to see if my product/magazine targets those I aimed for and if it satisfies
the aimed target audience.
