The document discusses a music magazine evaluation. It summarizes the key conventions used from the magazine Vibe that were incorporated into the student's own music magazine project, including the barcode placement, cover image style, masthead design, use of banners instead of straplines, headline sizing and formatting, and lack of advertisements on the cover. It also discusses elements of the student's own magazine cover design, such as following the rule of thirds composition, inclusion of a scan code in the barcode, and choice of a feminine pink color scheme.
2. 1.Inwhatwaysdoesyourmediaproductuse,developor
challengeformsandconventionsofrealmediaproducts?
I took conventions from various issues of Vibe, as there was a number of things that
caught my eye that I personally think would attract a young audience being young
myself. I have picked the issue I referred to the most during making my own music
magazine.
Barcode
The barcode is positioned in left
hand corner of the page it also
has the price and website with
it.
Cover Image
The four ladies are dressed
very seductively and pose
very flirtatious as well. They
are attracting an audience of
all gender.
Masthead
The masthead is the logo that
Vibe uses, its name. A vibrant
pink font colour stands out on
the crystal white background.
Rule of thirds
This issue of Vibe does not follow
the rule of thirds on its cover which
is quite unconventional.
“Sexy issue” has been layered on the
logo and masthead to show it is a special
edition issue and to spice it up a little.
Strapline
There is no strapline for the magazine,
instead they use banners which refer to
articles in the magazine. This is
positioned above the masthead.
Headline
The headline relates the models in
the cover image. It’s the second
biggest font size after the
masthead/logo. Text (font, size, colour etc.)
There are three text colours:
grey, black and pink which
coordinate with the models
outfits well.
The text are of all different size,
leading, horizontal and tracking
scales.
I believe all the fonts are the
same but they have just been
manipulated to look different.
There are no adverts on the cover as
they are all included within the
magazine which makes up for none
on the front.
Alignment
The text on the left had side of
the page has been aligned to the
left, whilst the text of the right
hand side of the page has been
aligned to the right.
3. Strapline
There is no strapline for the magazine,
instead I also used a banners which
refer to the main celebrity in the
magazine (Nicki Minaj). I positioned
this above the masthead.
There are no adverts on the cover as
they are all included within the
magazine which makes up for none
on the front.
Rule of thirds
This magazine does follow the rule
of thirds on its cover which is
conventional.
Text (font, size, colour etc.)
There are four text colours: grey,
black, white and pink which
coordinate with the models
outfits and makeup well.
The text are of all different size,
leading, horizontal and tracking
scales.
All the fonts are the same but
they have just been manipulated
to look different.
Cover Image
The model is dressed very trendy
and posed confidently. She is
attracting an audience of all
gender.
Barcode
The barcode is positioned in left
hand corner of the page it also
has the price, website and scan
code positioned with it. Scan
codes have become evidently
popular as technology is
evolving rapidly.
Headline
The headline relates the models in
the cover image. It’s the second
biggest font size after the
masthead/logo.
Alignment
The text on the left had side of
the page has been aligned to the
left, whilst the text of the right
hand side of the page has been
aligned to the right.
Masthead
The masthead is the name of
the magazine. A bold black font
colour stands out on the crystal
white background.
5. Byline
This acknowledges the person who
wrote the contents page and the
photographer who photographed
Kanye West. This is in small text
directly below the contents list.
Header
The header ‘Contents’ is placed very
unusually, the leading, horizontal,
tracking scales and alignment have
been manipulated to create a very
unique look.
Caption
Beside the image of Kanye West is a
caption. It explains with explicit detail
of the garments he’s wearing. The
text is the smallest on the page, this
enables the readers attention not to
be deferred from the focus of the
image and content list.
Images
The image is of a popular American
rapper named Kanye West. Its been
grey scaled with the only colour being
the heart clutched by a mysterious
hand coming over the rapper’s
shoulder. With Kanye being the main
focus on the page, you notice his face
is quite serious maybe giving a clue to
how serious and strong his music
maybe in the future…
Background
The significant ‘V’ in the background
represents Vibe. Its pale blue colour does
not overpower the image. The image and
header contents page overlap the ‘V’ but
suprisingly this does not make the page
look cluttered, it does the complete
opposite by making the page appear
orderly.
Text (font, size, colour etc.)
There are two text colours: grey
and black which coordinate with
the grey scaled edit of the image.
The text are of all different size,
leading, horizontal and tracking
scales.
6. Background
The significant ‘L’ in the background
represents Lawless. Its bright pink colour
but still does not overpower the image.
Unlike Vibe, only the image overlaps the
‘L’.
Header
The header ‘Contents’ is placed very
unusually, the leading, horizontal,
tracking scales and alignment have
been manipulated, in particularly the
right alignment.
Text (font, size, colour etc.)
There are two text colours: pink
and black which weirdly coordinate
with the outfit the models wearing.
The text are of all different size,
leading, horizontal and tracking
scales.
By line
There is no by line.
Caption
There is no caption.
Images
The image is of a model impersonating
Nicki Minaj. Its been slightly saturated
with the main colours being her lips and
funky leggings. With the image being the
main focus on the page, you notice her
cheeky facial maybe giving a clue to her
outrageous lifestyle and career…
8. Text (font, size, colour etc.)
There are three text colours: black,
grey and a lighter shade of grey
which coordinate well with the
greyscale image on the left page.
The text are of all different size,
leading, horizontal and tracking
scales.
The subheadings/questions are in
black and bold to guide the reader
through the article and indicate a
new paragraph.
I believe all the fonts are the same
but have just once again been
manipulated to look different.
Excluding the headline which has
used a more funky creative font.
Rule of thirds
This article does follow the rule of
thirds with the article being split
into three columns. This makes the
article more pleasing to the eye and
makes it as if the text is not as
successive.
Article
By covering 2/6 of the page spread this
shows that it is the main body. Readers are
able to follow the article by its consistent
structure
Images
The image has been fully bleed onto
the left page. The model in the image
is either associated or is being talked
about in the article on the right page.
Gutter
This is the space separating the
columns of text, they are all of the
same size making the text flow well.
Header
The header looks very unique, a
creative imitation of a barcode logo
of Vibe although it is actually not.
With a page number and Vibe’s
website beside it.
Headline
The headline is at the top of the
page right below the header. It’s
the biggest font on the page. This
indicates what the article is about.
Footer
There is no footer.
Pull Quote
There are no pull quotes.
Drop Cap
There are no drop caps.
Stand first
This is a brief summary of the article
about to be read, its in a faint colour as
it is not as important as the actual
article. This is positioned beneath the
headline.
By line
This acknowledges the people wrote
the article and who photography
the image. This is in small font size
directly below the stand first with a
small icon of a keyboard and
camera.
Alignment
All the text has been aligned to the
left. As we read from left to right.
9. By line

Stand first
This is a brief summary of Nicki Minaj
and the article about her, its in a faint
colour as it is not as important as the
actual article. This is positioned

Headline
The headline ‘The Big Move’ is at
the top of the page right below
the header. It’s the biggest font on
the page. It is a clue to Nicki Minaj
wanting to move to the UK.
Header
The header is not very unique, its
just the magazine’s name ‘Lawless’
written in a different font to it on
the front cover.

The image has been fully bleed onto
the left page. The model in the image
is Nicki Minaj, who is being talked

11. 2.How does your mediaproduct represent
particularsocial groups?
Representation – the ways in which the media portrays people, ideas,
or places from their prospective.
Photographs
The model was looking at the
camera making it seem like she
was looking at the audience.
Three point lighting was used in
all photographs to eliminate
shadow and bright up the models
face.
The model is dressed very trendy
and posed confidently indicating
she is quite girly under her skin
of hot fierceness which reflects
Nicki Minaj’s personality very
well.
12. The textual content is informal
and is quite brief and straight
to the point without including
extended vocabulary.
I stuck to four text colours:
grey, black, white and pink
which coordinate with the
model’s outfits. Using four text
colours is quite unconventional
so is using pink but Nicki Minaj
has a great influence on the
female audience so I choose a
quite feminine colour.
Textual content
13. I remained sticking to four text colours: grey,
black, white and pink to keep the feminine
look constant throughout the magazine.
Its design is very similar to Vibe’s except I
followed the conventions of rule or thirds
throughout the whole magazine. Apart from
the colour scheme being unconventional, the
alignments were too, text was aligned both left
and right.
I believe I have successfully constructed the
representation of a magazine for a 16-24 years
old age range and a mixed gender audience.
Design
14. 3.What kind of media institution might
distributeyour mediaproduct and why?
Magazines can be distributed in many ways, the most
common, distributed by truck then on to be delivered to
stores.
For example, Vibe is currently owned by InterMedia Partners
and they distribute their magazine in two forms:
Online version which has more information than the printed
copy and refers to social networking sites.
Printed version which gets distributed by post to a variety of
shops ranging from corner shops to supermarkets, this
version has more catchy offers to tempt the public to buy the
magazines off the shelves.
Another example of such magazine is RWD magazine
produced by Rewind Creative Media LTD.
For my magazine I decided to combine features from the
online versions of Vibe as well as printed versions of Vibe.
Leaving it to distribution by truck to stores as the only
distribution method. Particularly to retail stores.
15. Continued…
I will use the same production/distribution
company as RWD magazine for my magazine.
Yes, it is quite similar to the one they already
produce but varies in ways such as having artist
gossip from America as well as the UK. There is a
trend that shows upcoming UK artists have been
influenced by well known American artists.
Angel’s musical influences
include Brandy Norwood,
Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson,
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
Sneakbo’s musical
influences include Michael
Jackson and Tupac.
Rita Ora’s musical influences
include Gwen Stefani, Beyonce
Knowles, Rihanna,Aaliyah,
India.Arie, Christina Aguilera,
and Brandy.
16. 4. Who wouldbe the audiencefor your media
product?
It became evident that my target audience are young
adults between the age ranges 18-24 years old. I was
able to find this out via my audience survey results
which included a variety of responses from people of
different cultures and ages. I was apparent that my
audience like to shop in well known branded fashion
shops such as JD Sports and Nike, as well as staying
up to date with current trends in clothes; they also
had a great interest in technology such as Apple
products.
The production of digital formats of magazines are
beginning to overtake the production of print copies
of magazines, but it was found that a large number
of people still preferred to read the magazines the
traditional method. Printed copies still have many
benefits such longer, more detailed articles, and they
are already in a usable format to keep for reference
material and future use. My audience would be
situated in quite large cities such as London,
Birmingham and Manchester. London especially,
most upcoming hip hop artists have come from
smaller areas within London; for example, K Koke,
born and raised in Stonebridge, North West London.
17. 5. How did you attract/addressyour audience?
75% of people who answered my questionnaire for as a part of research
and planning made it clear that they preferred the simplistic magazine
design. One magazine that showed this was Vibe, this was the stepping
stone to creating the design for my music magazine.
I decided to use Segoe UI as the consistent font throughout the magazine. I
don’t think I have came across this font before, but even though it may not
be popular I believe it has a minimalistic, modern look to it. I continued to
limit myself to the four colours (pink, black, grey and white), anything else
outside of this palette would of looked extremely out of place.
I made sure that the imagery took up 2/3 with a simple one colour
background (white). This was typical of issues of Vibe. It keeps the reader’s
attention on the textual content as well as the images. My questionnaire
results showed that 90% of people preferred short informal articles. I
managed to keep my article straight to the point and brief uses of slang but
still very detailed.
The price of my magazine was relatively low but also made sure it was
definitely high quality inside and out.
18. Wordpress is a free web open source software. It lets anyone to create and
edit new web pages and blog “posts” using only a web browser. I used
Wordpress to frequently update my blog on my journey throughout making
both my student magazine for the preliminary task and my music magazine
for the final product.
Advantages
• Easy to use
• Offers a wide variety of layouts and themes
• Allows you to create specific content that can be organized into headers,
footers and sidebars of your pages
Disadvantages
• Anyone can see it
• Quite basic
Google is a popular search engine on the internet receiving several hundred
million queries each day. I used it to find webpages for the Nicki Minaj
profile, images of poses Nicki Minaj and Tim Westwood do, and images of
Vibe and RWD cover pages, content pages and double page spreads.
Advantages
• Gathers search results in seconds
• Free
• No software needed
Disadvantages
• Spam
• Anything is accessible
6. What have you learnt about technologies
from the process of constructing this
product?
19. Youtube is a website where you can upload share and view videos. I
used Youtube to view interviews, biography and songs from Nicki
Minaj, Tim Westwood, K Koke and Wretch 32. This helped me to create
every page of my magazine for the final task.
Advantages
• Easy to use
• Free videos
Disadvantages
• None
Photoshop is a digital image editing software. It is used to enhance
and edit pictures. Pictures from posters, book covers, and magazines
etc. have either been created or edited using Photoshop. I used
Photoshop to slightly alter the skin tone of my model making her a tad
more saturated and lighter for my music magazine for the final
product.
Advantages
• Once learnt, anything is possible
• Can assist photographers, artists, designers etc.
Disadvantages
• Difficult to learn
• Expensive
20. In Design is a desktop publishing software. It is used to create the design
and layout of posters, flyers, magazines, brochures, newspapers and books.
I used In Design to create the front cover, contents page and double page
spread for both my magazines for the preliminary and final product.
Advantages
• Can create multiple pages
• Key for design work
Disadvantages
• Difficult to learn
• Expensive
• Will need to work alongside other difficult software such as Photoshop
Studio Lighting was used to light the left and right hand side of the model,
this created a shadow. There was then a light on the top elevating the
shadow. It helped create a bleached quality look. This was used when
photographing my model for my magazine for the final task
Advantages
• Inexpensive
• Can control light and shadows
Disadvantages
• Produces heat
21. DSLR camera stands for digital single-lens reflex. It is a digital camera but
the image that is seen through the view finder is the image that is captured.
I used this to take pictures of my model for each page of my magazine for
the final task.
Advantages
• Better image quality
• Better sensitivity to light
• You see what you shoot
Disadvantages
• Heavy
• Not as straight forward
Point and Style shoot camera is also a digital camera but far more compact
and simpler to use. I used this to take pictures of my model for my magazine
for the preliminary task.
Advantages
• Easy to use
• Lightweight
• Has autofocus, automatic exposure options, and flash
Disadvantages
• Poor quality
• Limited control
22. My mobile phone enabled to me keep in touch
with my friend who I required to be a model,
arrange suitable times for the photo shoot and
discuss appropriate props and clothing to bring
along with her.
Advantages
• Portable
• Easy communication
Disadvantages
• Not answering phone calls!
and finally…
23. 7.Looking backat your preliminarytask,
what do you feel you have learnt in the
progressionfrom it to the full product?
Most of the software, technology and skills I used to create my final media product
I was absolutely a newbie to. For instance Photoshop, I had to use this software to
resize and crop images for my cover, contents and double page spread pages.
Another, In Design, I used to design layouts for each page, drop capitals, text boxes,
and place holding images and text etc. Finally, Word Press, to record the journey
through the making on the magazine and publishing preliminary work and final
work.
When creating the school magazine for the preliminary exercise, I made the
appearance of the pages the priority of everything. When creating the music
magazine for the final exercise, much more planning and research had to be put
into it, this was done by looking at existing media products. I had to analyse typical
magazine conventions with the similar or same genre as to the one I chose. Of
which I did not acknowledge when producing the product for the preliminary
exercise. Compared to my final product typical conventions have been made
apparent, such as more content, smaller text and a more complex design. I now
understand a number of importance's such as house style, keeping the colour
scheme continuous throughout the magazine to create a sense of organisation and
style, instead of simply using a certain colour to match the models outfit.
