The Success of Baz Luhrmann s Romeo And Juliet
The Success of Baz Luhrmann s Romeo And Juliet
Baz Luhrmann s Romeo and Juliet was highly successful. The film sold millions at the box office and
was well received by critics such as Paul Matthews who said that Romeo and Juliet was a, radical
invention of a classic text . Although the film was released to late in the year to receive any awards,
William Shakespeare s Romeo + Juliet was and always will be considered a classic. The reason for the
film s success was because the film was made accessible to young people in a way that Shakespeare
usually isn t by giving it modern location and using special effects. The film makers wanted to knock
Shakespeare down and put him where he belongs which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He cut the lines which cannot be transferred to 20th century context are cut such as the convocation
between Romeo and the Apothecary, this convocation still takes place but in a much reduced way. Baz
Luhrmann also cuts a lot of the complex imagery as it would not have been as appealing to a younger
audience. Luhrmann s version of the script is far more concise than the original and does not
overwhelm the audience with too difficult language making the film far more successful with the
younger viewers. Shakespeare s script was written for a very basic set but the film s setting was very
elaborate so no complex imagery or soliloquies are needed as the setting speaks for its self. Baz
Luhrmann made the Shakespearian play far more concise, slick and easier to understand which helped
make the film be so successful.
As I already mentioned in my introduction bringing the play up to date made the film highly
successful. This is shown in almost every scene in the play. It s shown in the opening scenes to the
movie when the Montague Boys arrive in a bright yellow car with modern music blaring out of the
stereo. They almost look like college beach boys, with their Hawaiian shirts and baggy trousers. This
was a very good way to start the film as it gave it a modern cool look which would be appealing to the

The Psychological Characteristics Of Breast Cancer
It has long been known that certain physical characteristics are biologically determined by genetic
inheritance. Color of eyes, straight or curly hair, pigmentation of the skin and certain diseases (such as
Huntingdon s chorea) are all a function of the genes we inherit. Other physical characteristics, if not
determined, appear to be at least strongly influenced by the genetic make up of our biological parents.
Height, weight, hair loss (in men), life expectancy and vulnerability to specific illnesses (e.g. breast
cancer in women) are positively correlated between genetically related individuals. These facts have
led many to speculate as to whether psychological characteristics such as behavioral tendencies,
personality attributes and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However nativists also argue that maturation governs the emergence of attachment in infancy,
language acquisition and even cognitive development as a whole.
At the other end of the spectrum are the environmentalists also known as empiricists (not to be
confused with the other empirical / scientific approach). Their basic assumption is that at birth the
human mind is a tabula rasa (a blank slate) and that this is gradually filled as a result of experience
(e.g. behaviorism).
From this point of view psychological characteristics and behavioral differences that emerge through
infancy and childhood are the result of learning. It is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs
the psychologically significant aspects of child development and the concept of maturation applies
only to the biological.
For example, when an infant forms an attachment it is responding to the love and attention it has
received, language comes from imitating the speech of others and cognitive development depends on
the degree of stimulation in the environment and, more broadly, on the civilization within which the
child is reared.
Examples of an extreme nature positions in psychology include Bowlby s (1969) theory of attachment,
which views the bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures survival.
Likewise, Chomsky (1965) proposed language is gained through the use of

Buchnera Aphidicol Southern Blot Analysis
Aphids possess bacteriocytes that are specific to its obligate mutualist, Buchnera aphidicola. It seems
that this genus has lost genes that are essential to its life. Through Southern Blot analysis, Nikoh and
Nakabachi have shown that these lost genes are actually encoded in the aphid genome. Through
detailed structural and phylogenetic analyses, the full length sequences of these transcripts were
determined. This demonstrated that these transcripts are indeed significantly similar to multiple
bacterial genes. While the Buchnera no longer possess these genes, other similar bacteria (E. Coli)
possess these genes. Nikoh and Nakabachi were able to conclude that they found several pieces of
evidence that show that aphids are indeed able to acquire genes from bacteria through lateral gene
transfer. They also claim that these genes are used to maintain their obligate mutualistic relationship
with the bacteria, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
show similar results in another study. The same species as the one mentioned before, Buchnera
aphidicola has a highly reduced genome, which increases the chances that gene transfer occurred from
the bacteria to the aphid. Using the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, they were able to provide
stronger support of the transfer of 12 genes from the bacteria to the aphid genome. While they were
able to identify this transfer between the pea aphid and the bacteria, they found that none of these
genes were transferred between Buchnera and the aphid, just like in the previous study. Sandstrom et
al. looked at different ways this gene transfer could have occurred. Insects in general usually host
secondary bacterial symbionts along with primary endosymbionts. Both symbionts are maternally
transmitted. Their results showed that a community of bacteria invades aphid cells and are transmitted
both vertically and horizontally among other aphid lineages. They present other potential possibilities
of transfer through ingestion from plant surfaces and plant

Late 19th Century Law and Order Essay
Late 19th Century Law and Order
Thick green smog hung in the air and filth ran in the streets. 19th century London was not a nice place
to live. Crime was on the up with burglaries, drunkenness and assault being just some of the crimes
committed. Women got a rough deal. There was no work available to them so many women turned to
prostitution and alcoholism. Surprisingly enough, however, the percentages of violent deaths was very
low, with around 15 murders, and 50 cases of manslaughter a year.
The London police force has been active since 1829, when uniformed officers patrolled the streets.
Named after their founder, Sir Robert Peel, bobbies tried to keep order in the streets of London. They

This form of attack is known as garrotting. In the area of Whitechapel, prostitutes were frequently
mugged for their night s earnings this way. Larceny was also widespread. Criminals would frequently
break into people s houses and steal their belongings, resulting in many people having locks fitted on
their doors. Many people were also pick pocketed, mainly due to the crowded and busy streets, and
coupled with the fact that many people were unsuspecting; the poor had many victims to choose from
and find what they could.
Demonstrations also required a lot of policing. Two of the most famously violent protests were black
Monday (8th February 1866) and bloody Sunday. (13th November 1866). Bloody Sunday happened
when the Social Democratic Federation (SDF) organised a meeting for 13th February, 1887 in
Trafalgar Square to protest against the policies of the Conservative Government headed by the
Marques of Salisbury. The government decided to ban the meeting and the police were given the
orders to stop the marchers entering Trafalgar Square. The SDF decided to continue with their planned
meeting and as a result the marchers were attacked by the police. Three people died and over 200 were
injured. Black Monday happened on Monday 8 February when two rival organisations, the London

Maniac Analysis
In every society there are those who reject the social and political status quo. Such characters can be
portrayed as both heroes fighting an oppressive system or villains plotting to destabilize society. It all
depends on the point of view and message which the author wishes to depict. Those who reject the
official status quo, whether it be social or political, are not doing it just for themselves, but for the
good of society as a whole. I will demonstrate this with the character known as the Maniac, from An
Accidental Death of an Anarchist, and Berenger, from Rhinoceros; the Maniac rejects the status quo of
society and calls for revolution (Fo 2009, 75), while Berenger calls on himself to take a stand against
major societal changes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The act of creating new versions of the story, which the officers believe will save them, mirrors the
reforms aimed at maintaining the status quo of society (Fo, 34 35). For the Maniac, exposing this
scandal will act as the fertilizer of social democracy and therefore society will rise up a stronger, more
enduring state (Fo, 81, 79). Therefore, from the passages referenced above, and the lack of evidence to
the contrary, it is clear that the Maniac is acting in the best interests of society and not solely for
himself. The character Berenger from Eugene Ionesco s Rhinoceros is in a different situation than the
Maniac. Over the course of the play, many of the characters begin turning into rhinoceroses; it begins
with a rhinoceros charging through the town square and scaring everyone, to Berenger s friends and
colleagues transforming into rhinoceroses (Ionesco, 36, 70, 96). Despite all of those around him and
society itself transforming, Berenger refuses to conform and takes up arms in opposition (Ionesco,
148). Berenger s rejection of rhinocerism is not quite the same as the Maniac opposing an already
entrenched system and status quo, but it is a rejection of new social norms taking root. His belief in
defending the moral laws and irreplaceable system of values, which his society is built upon gives him
a purpose (Ionesco, 93 94). In the beginning of the play, Berenger struggles with alcoholism lacks the
motivation to take care of himself

Ethnic Conflict In The Bosnian Genocide
Bosnia is a complicated country: three religions, three nations and those others . Nationalism is strong
in all three nations; in two of them there are a lot of racism, chauvinism, separatism; and now we are
supposed to make a state out of that ( Alija Izetbegovic Quote ). This quote clearly reflects the
Bosnian ethnic conflict. It states seemingly that there is a lot of racism between each ethics and they
want their own state. The ethnic conflict occurred in a really long time since Bosnian separated from
Yugoslavia. Then, there is Bosnian Genocide that took place between 1992 and 1995. The Bosnian
Genocide was the conflict between Serbs and Bosnian Muslims, the ethnic conflict, was stopped by
the NATO and United Nation.
Bosnia had the ethnic conflict that continued from the Yugoslavia, The Socialist Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia was one of the more liberal communist regimes, led by the enigmatic dictator Josip Broz
Tito (Krkljes, Sandro). After Tito died, the ethnic conflicts started to raise. The main ethnic groups that
fought each other were Serbs, Bosnian Muslims, and Croats. The Bosnian genocide involved two
main groups: Serbs and Bosnian Muslims. The conflict between these two ethnic groups were

Hally a dog of the Tosis family and Seaman the dog of Lewis one of the leaders if the Corps of

reason that Hally and Seaman are loyal is that, Hally s breath made two burglars pass out cold, and
protecting the family from a home invasion. The Tosis family got a huge reward for turning in the
wanted criminals. Likewise, Seaman helped hunt. Seamen chased bleeding deer, and got beavers for

Symbolism In The Invisible Man
1. The chief difference between Wyeth s painting and Wall s photography is that the former acts as a
complement to aid the readers understanding of the general story, while the latter acts as that of the
protagonists life, in the point of view of the protagonist (in this case,) himself. As the text says, the
former, though more popular than the text itself, becomes less meaningful without the original
documents, because the synthesis of the Literature and the illustration is what provides the readers
with the full experience of the book to imagine and be entertained by a story that does not usually
happen (393). To go further, the reader cannot live in it; the reader can only use it as to help one s
imagination/experience of the said fiction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I generally agree with the comments of the MoMA s critique that Wall opened an entirely new way of
illustration, in that Wall s approach was so inviting to the audience. The focal point of the picture is to
the protagonist of the novel, the Invisible Man , and such emphasis does draw some eyes to the
protagonist. However, at the same time, the whole picture is overwhelmed by the number of the
lightbulbs above the man. Though everything is in real life sizes, the amount of the lightbulbs acts as a
hyperbole, as the text suggests (394). Such override of the focus provides the audiences with more
depth of cognition of the situation, and many times, it is not frequently possible in two dimensional
settings, such as (comparatively) plain illustrations like those of Wyeth. In that sense, I think Wall s
photography has opened a new way of the illustration. However, at the same time, I think his
brilliancy is solely due to his use of the medium of photography. In other words, I think his only
contribution to the illustration industry is the use of the film, which conveys different sets of images
and cognition. Films could always do that, and perhaps thousands of the photographers have used such
techniques in their work; there is nothing new about the technique itself. So the only difference Wall
made was his synthesis of the film and the Literature to illustrate that specific

Ethos In Letter From Birmingham Jail
On April 16, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. wrote an open letter to African Americans and all
Americans who care about the civil right movement. In order to defend the strategy of nonviolent
resistance to racism and respond to being called an outsider, King wrote his famous letter Letter from
a Birmingham Jail. So why the King s letter is so powerful and convincing to the readers? Is it
because of his identity of civil rights leader and his credibility(ethos)? Is it by the reason of the
argument there are just laws and unjust laws (King) which he exerted numerous theoretical basis with
utmost efforts(logos)? Or, It s due to his passionate writing style and the description of the image of
the oppressed black people(pathos). Actually, It s all of them. These are the rhetorical method King
used in his letter. At the beginning of the letter, King had already manifested his great ethos. He
showed his sincere attitude to readers to better answer their questions, But since I feel that you are
men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I want to try to answer your
statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms (King), which enabled him to establish
his trust in some demanding readers. Moreover, at the end of the letter, he wrote, I also hope that
circumstances will soon make it possible for me to meet each of you, not as an integrationist or a civil
rights leader but as a fellow clergyman and a Christian brother (King). This shows

Battle Analysis Blacktown
A commanding performance by the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles saw them cruise to a 40 6 victory
over the Wests Tigers to keep their slim chance of making the finals alive.
Jackson Hastings steered the ship with pure class, and he also brought his goal kicking boots with him,
slotting seven conversions from eight attempts.
Brian Kelly showed why he has 19 games at NRL level this year as he had three try involvements for
the afternoon, while Pita Godinet also had a massive involvement at fullback.
The Tigers were their own worst enemy to begin the game, giving away three early penalties to bring
Blacktown right into the contest. Cameron Cullen as he has done all season took advantage of the field
position when he ferociously took the line on and scored a great try under the posts.

The lead was extended on that same side shortly afterwards however, when Peter Schuster showed his
explosive speed to score a long range try before Hastings calmly slotted another conversion from the
sideline to make the score 18 0.
A desperate front on tackle just before half time by Jeremy Marshall King saved a try, but Blacktown
were able to increase the margin on the next play when Kelly dazzled his opponent to create an
overlap for Schuster to score in the corner.
The Tigers responded straight away to a more than disappointing first half when Joel Edwards crashed
over under the posts in the 43rd minute, but Blacktown his straight back through Jarrad Kennedy, who
finished off a polished set to strolled over untouched.
A classy long range effort increased the Sea Eagles lead even further, when Pita Godinet made a line

End Of Life Care Essay
How does the rural influence affect rural emergency room nurses transitioning from curative to end of
life care? Since there are limited resources in rural hospitals, it is necessary to explore the rural
influence on rural emergency room (ER) nurses transitioning from curative to end of life care
(Rolland, 2016). It was necessary to capture areas of need to best support rural nurses caring for dying
patients and their families in the rural communities. Rural populations are poorly represented in
research (Rolland, 2016). The perceptions of Rural ER Nurses concerning end of life care obstacles
has been explored. A questionnaire was used to rank obstacles. The lowest ranking obstacles were
nurses not being comfortable with caring for dying patients and or their families. Among the highest
ranking obstacles was knowing the patient or family personally. The rural nursing theory was

The Significant Kill
November 15, 2014 my favorite day of the year: opening day. I can remember the day as if it was
yesterday. Four thirty in the morning is when the sustainable day began. I woke up and got dressed in
a hurry because I was full energy and excitement. My Uncle Todd came and picked me up and we
were off to camp. We arrived at our camp and it was time for the annual camp breakfast which
consists of Grandpa s famous Texas toast. The camp was filled with an aroma of a campfire smell
from the wood stove and toast frying on the stove. Everyone took their seats (which everyone has a
certain spot they sit) and we began the morning feast. The room was full of laughter and vigorous
stories. Everyone had a story to tell whether it was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shortly following the doe was a buck. I couldn t tell how big it was because I was having a hard time
finding it in my scope. As it got closer Grandpa said Shoot! I quickly found the body and pulled the
trigger. The buck dropped dead in it s tracks and promptly died. Normally you wait a little while to
make sure it s dead, but since we knew it was dead we walked up to it. As we were approaching it
Grandpa stopped me. How sizable do you think it is? He asked. I don t know. Maybe six or eight
points. I replied. Bigger. He said Probably ten or twelve points. My buck fever started to kick in. I was
shaking with joy and exhilaration. We finally got close enough to where I could sort of see the antlers
and I could just tell it was a monster. Grandpa quickly counted the antlers and it was a ten point. I was
so excited, but Grandpa was even more excited. As soon as I saw it, I took a quick picture of it to send
to my dad and mom but our cell phone signal is not good at camp so I could only tell them how big it
was. After I texted my parents, Grandpa began to gut it due to the fact that it s super gross. We tried to
haul it back to camp, but it was very heavy and the water made it even harder so we decided just to tag
it and leave it and come when we had more help. When we got back to camp we celebrated with some
victory hot chocolate. It was around nine in the morning so the other boys wouldn t be coming back
for a couple more hours and I was very anxious to tell them the news. After a while we saw Rhett
walking back to camp. I ran outside to tell him about our success, but he thought I was kidding! I
pulled out my phone and showed him the picture and he thought I got it off the internet. So, I decided
we would go back to the deer and he could help us pull it out of the swamp. Once we found the deer

The God Yhwh In The Book Of The Bible
The god Yhwh goes through many changes throughout the books of the hebrew bible. For example, in
the book of Genesis, Yhwh makes the entire earth, but when Eve takes food from the tree of
knowledge, he is angry because she gained knowledge of right and wrong. He seems a little bit jealous
here because he punishes them for becoming more like him. This is shown when it says, Then Lord
God said, Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now lest he put
forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever therefore the Lord god sent
him forth from the garden of eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. (28) In exodus Yhwh
becomes very ruthless. The punishment for most crimes he talks about is death. Back then this may
have seemed okay, but now putting someone to death for hitting his parent is a bit extreme. In the end
he says, And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate. (33) like it makes up for the cruel
punishments he just laid out. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

you in your land, you shall nor do him wrong. The stranger who sojourns with you shall be to you as

talks more about being fair to other people and lays down rules for how you should treat people in the
court, and in life. This example is best seen when Yhwh states, You shall not oppress a hired servant
who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brethren or one of the sojourners who are in your

In all of human history, people have written about inhuman beings, many of which include gods,

in media. Most of society stopped believing in these creatures years ago, but for 17th century Salem,
witchcraft became a living nightmare (Fremon, 1999). I have studied this topic for years, especially
anything pertaining to the Salem Witch Trials. I have read several books and have sources from

It was known as St. Anthony s Fire because of the burning sensation in the limbs and blackening of
the skin. Monks, who ate white wheat bread and not rye bread, were treating the victims and shared
their wheat bread with them, which helped the victims to heal because they were not eating infected
bread (Bonnet Basson, 2004, p. 213). Ergot has been used for medical purposes since the late 1500s
but was not acknowledged academically until the 1800s. Midwives used it to prevent excess bleeding
during childbirth. It was not used for long because it caused uterine spasms and dangers to the child.
In the early 1900s, W. A. Jacobs and L.C. Craig of the Rockefeller Institute of New York developed
lysergic acid by studying ergot. Swiss chemist, Albert Hoffman, experimented with the mold, ergot,
and the alkaloids that made up lysergic acid, and was studying diethylamide but the new substance
had no medical uses. From this, he subsequently created the drug LSD. (May, 1998) Ergot can affect
any part of the body in both people and animals and can cause problems in any body system, known
or unknown. The symptoms can range from mental to physical distresses, such as extreme confusion
and hallucinations to convulsions and crippling loss of movement (Bonnet Basson, 2004). While LSD
is not addictive, it can do damage similar to, but not as extensive as, the plant of its origin, ergot. In

Identify The Different Types Of Diversity
The society in which we live in today is filled with a diverse group of people. Generally, when people
think about diversity, demographics are primarily considered. This is because diversity is associated
with our various ethnic groups. The United States is home to over 300 million people and each one of
them is different; therefore, the U.S. is known as the melting pot . Along with the many types of races,
there are a variety of age groups, religious beliefs, and personal backgrounds. Although we typically
think about physical appearance and social status, we never really consider someone s personality
being associated with diversity. Each person has a different personality from everyone else and that is
due to two factors nature and nurture. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) leading to various responses including
increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, release of pro inflammatory markers, and
activation of stress response kinases resulting in neuronal cell death. The ongoing neuronal injury and
inflammation further promotes cellular apoptosis and impairs neurogenesis in epileptic brain.
Identification of this mechanistic relationship between acquired epilepsy and inflammation will
provide an important therapeutic target pathway for prevention of

Festivals as Ways to Learn About Faith Essay
Festivals as Ways to Learn About Faith Pesach is the biggest of the three pilgrim festivals, along with
Sukkot and Shavuot and these all commemorate the period in history that the Jews pilgrimed from
Egypt to the Promised Land of Israel.
The first day of Passover is the same day as the commemoration of the destruction of the temple and
this is insisted by the Talmud.
The symbolism of the name Passover reminds Jews of the tenth plague, the killing of the first born to
the Egyptian families, when the Jews were instructed to put sheep s blood on their homes to identify
their homes to God so he could Passover and know to not kill the first ... Show more content on

The new Pharaoh s council was called about the situation with the Israelites and they gave him strong
advice to enslave the children of Israel so he could gain total control over this foreign race who were
becoming too powerful in a land where they were not wanted. Pharaoh limited the freedom of the
Hebrews and laid heavy taxes upon them. He then recruited their men into forced labour, slavery,
under the supervision of harsh taskmasters.
The children of Israel were now forced to build cities, erect monuments, construct roads, work in the
quarries, and hew stones or make bricks and tiles. However, the more the Egyptians oppressed them,
and the harder the restrictions imposed upon them became, the more the children of Israel multiplied.
Finally, when King Pharaoh saw that forcing the Hebrews to do hard work did not succeed in
suppressing their rapidly growing numbers, he ordered that all newly born male children of the
Hebrews to be killed, the midwives disobeyed and so they were made to throw the child into the Nile
river. Only daughters were allowed to live.
The Pharaoh grew paranoid, after being told by his personal astrologers, that a new leader of Egypt
was to be born from an Israelite. This was taken as a strong danger to the

Overcoming Abusive Childhood In Thomas Sayer Ellis Sticks
When children are growing, their very first role models are often their parents. Though this is true,
they are not always the best ones. This idea is exemplified in Thomas Sayer Ellis s poem, Sticks. In
the poem Sticks, the theme of overcoming an abusive childhood is demonstrated through the poets use
of figurative language, sound and structural devices, and tone.
To begin, Ellis uses figurative language throughout the poem to express a theme of overcoming an
abusive childhood. Ellis uses imagery to suggest that his father had a very loud, outstanding voice
when he says No one could outshout him / or make bigger fists. (7 8). This is very effective because it
gives the reader a sense of understanding of what is was like for the narrator ... Show more content on

He uses alliteration several times throughout the poem. For example, Ellis looks apon how as a child
he imitated his father, despite the pain he was causing him. He expresses this when he says a
plagiarist, hitting the things he hit (13). This use of alliteration adds flow to the poem in addition to
adding extreme emotion for the readers. The use of caesura in this poem breaks apart the ideas that
Ellis is trying to express. As mentioned above, the first five paragraphs are mentioned in a form of
past tense where as the remaining three are in the present tense. Before the last three paragraphs break,
there is a caesura which represents a change in tone as well as time. Ellis represents this idea when he
states I discovered writing/ How words are parts of speech/ with beats and breaths of their own (21).
This part of the poem is very important and represents a break in theme. Where the poem from before
that was of the past, from that point on, the poem becomes hopeful. It is at that point that the narrator
broke the cycle of abuse and did the opposite of what might be expected from a child who grew up in
an abusive home. Whereas when he was a child he intimidated his father and idolized him, he chose a
positive outlet and did not become the man that his father was. Finally, Ellis uses assonance to add
flow and structure to the poem. He uses this device when he

for other clothing companies to succeed in the competitive clothing industry, and how a company s

When opening a company it is almost a guarantee that owners are concerned about long time success.
Many companies are forced out of business by their competition in various ways. Numerous
companies do not succeed because of their bad business strategies, business locations, or they were

striving to be successful. Whether the company is trying to be the best in clothing or technology, the
product is different but the critical challenges are the same.
A company, such as H M for example, faces many challenges because selling clothes is a very
competitive field. One of the challenges H M face is the competition of other clothing stores, such as

Preventing Obesity among School Children through Healthier...
Preventing Obesity Among School Children through Healthier School Meals
Obesity and overweight are among the pressing health problems among children and adolescents in
the developed world.
Obesity refers to an excess amount of body fat whereas overweight can be measured by the BMI index
or height weight ratio.
According to the WHO (2012), obesity and overweight are the fifth largest risk for global deaths.
Introduction
Obesity and overweight among children and adolescents has increased to more than a third of children
and adolescents (CDC, 2012).
Children and adolescents consume 700 to 1000 more calories per day than required (NCCOR, 2012).
School lunches mostly consist of fried and salty foods, which has prompted ex military officers to call
for legislation on healthy school lunches (Spillius, 2010).
Problem Identification
Such children are likely to have higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in later years (CDC,
2012).
Obesity in children and adolescents can lead to greater susceptibility to the following in later years:
Asthma
High blood pressure
Bone and joint problems
Sleep apnea
Low self esteem
Problem Identification
Children and adolescents often resort to unhealthy ways of controlling weight including: Crash diets
Binge eating, leading to bulimia nervosa Starvation Drugs, e.g. cocaine Laxatives
Hence, there is a need to develop healthy ways of controlling obesity in children.

White Fang is a book all about the struggle of life. Jack London uses the process of natural selection
greatly when it comes to expressing the theme. Meaning, if something is not the strongest, smartest,
and most adoptable of its kind it will surely die. This mindset was soon established by the main
character White Fang. From the start he was the strongest of all the wolf cubs, being the only cub to
survive the famine that plagued his family. White Fang s ability to adapt to his different environments
is also a key point concerning to the theme of life. The great examples here is that he goes from

Abstract Family Therapy can be implemented in a different ways in a program that provides a facet of

can also be used to assist with behavioral issues in children. A well rounded family service program

Transnational Criminal Organization and the Law...
The problem of transnational criminal organization poses some unique challenges to the law
enforcement community. The scope of these organizations activities and personnel creates
exponentially more work for law enforcement than relatively isolated or contained criminal acts by
individuals or small groups. Random and personal crimes committed by individuals can usually be
handled by police at the local level, as the investigation is limited to the known crime (or crimes) that
have been committed and reported. In these cases, identifying and apprehending the perpetrator is
possible through investigation of the evidence of the specific instance of crime. This is not the case
with large criminal organizations. The scale of criminal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These offenders may form groups and teams and play different roles (Xu and Chen). These groups and
teams may have vastly different functions, such as production, transportation, distribution and
marketing of illegal goods and services, as well as the eventual laundering of the ill gotten proceeds
from the illegal activity (Jiminez). Network analysis helps analysts determine the activities being
conducted by the criminal enterprise and who all is involved and in what capacity. In the end, criminal
network analysis integrates information from multiple crime incidents and even multiple sources to
discover regular patterns about the structure, organization, operation, and information flow in criminal
networks (Xu and Chen). This general intelligence on the groups will aid investigative efforts and
facilitate collection of evidence for use in court.
Several software programs (like i2 s Analyst s Notebook) have been developed to automate and
streamline criminal network analysis. Although these programs automate much of the analysis
(especially of large amount of raw data) there are still some basic techniques that occur behind the
scenes in the software, that could still be done manually by the analyst. The first step is creating an
association matrix of known and suspected associations between members of the criminal
organization (Precision Computing Intelligence).

Democratic Republic Research Paper
Introduction:
Children across the country can be heard pledging allegiance to the flag of the United States of
America and to the republic for which it stands; however, research shows we no longer have a
democratic republic in the United States. When the desires of the majority are systematically
subverted to the desires a small and powerful minority, as is often in the case in the US, that system is
an oligarchy. The democratic republic envisioned by the founding fathers has been replaced by an
oligarchy to which they would have objected. With no express discussion of corporations in the
constitution, the responsibility of defining the role and privileges of corporations in the US has been
left largely to the United States Supreme Court. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Comparison Of The American Dream And All My Sons
Alrighty, I am going to kind of mash together question one and two. I wanted to discuss the American
Dream and All My Sons, but I also think that topic really, nicely goes into the relevance it has today.
The American Dream can be worded and defined in different ways. But as stated in Question 1, The
American Dream can be defined as the idea that in the US anyone can become successful through hard
work and an entrepreneurial spirit. I think that is a definition that everyone can agree on, more or less.
The Cambridge Dictionary also defines the American Dream, the belief that everyone in the US has
the chance to be successful and happy if they work hard. Also as stated in Question 1, All My Sons is
often described as a negative critique of the American Dream.
I m sure we can all immediately recognize and understand what Joe Keller did is wrong and goes
against what you would think the American Dream is. He kept information from authorities about the
cylinders so he could get out of jail. Deever was kept in jail because of Keller s lies. Not only that, but
21 pilots died too. There is a huge moral and ethical responsibility to tell the truth and do the right
thing. However, Keller lied and kept information so that he could make money and get out of
jail..again, leaving Deever to sit in prison. Keller never thought about Deever, only himself and his
company. During the time of the incident (1947) stress was high and they had to make quick
decisions. All of the companies

University of Alabama demonstrates that children s participation in gardens leads to healthier food

learning, and increased reading and math standardized test scores. Students who participated in
gardening had a six percent lower body mass index, an average of eleven percent higher standardized

can be a uninteresting but required exercise where paying attention and retaining information becomes
a tedious endeavor. When an active teacher decides to teach science through gardening and hands on

The Effect Of Erich Remarque s All Quiet On The Western Front
War, a monstrosity overlooked by civilians as only an event, can only be experienced first hand for
what horrors it truly brings. World War I, also known as The War to End All Wars, brought darkness to
the world from July 28, 1914, to November 11, 1918, as several combatants took place in the war.
Erich Remarque s novel takes place during World War I as it tells a story about young German soldiers
fighting on the front line. Throughout the novel, Paul Bäumer, the main protagonist, faces many
horrors such as the loss of his comrades, the brutality of combat, and the horrid nature of the front

Usually, a war is won when one side surrenders, but those outcomes do not make everything better.
Paul realizes war sets, people against one another and men have to innocently slay [each] other
(Remarque 262). Men slaying each other happens to be a dark horror of the brutality of war which
cannot be avoided because they are forced to do so. The front line consists of the troops closest to the
enemy and carries out the most horrific brutalities of the war. Bäumer and his squad are on the front
line and experience things most human beings should never have to see. In the summer of 1918, most
men know they are losing the war and cannot win. Paul has lost many comrades and the true horror of
war makes everything much worse. The German forces are being driven back and the soldiers are
fatigued. All over the place are yellow pools with red spiral streams of blood which the dead,
wounded, and survivors slowly sink into (Remarque 286). These settings have made this part of the
war a true monstrosity for the soldiers. They cannot keep on fighting as this darkness rules over any
hope of fighting back. The horrors of war are never experienced by most human beings but will be by
soldiers who are usually not prepared for them. Losing fellow comrades, experiencing the brutality of

Is it moral to sit back and allow thousands of people to be unfairly stripped of their human rights and

The film sold millions at the box office and was well received by critics such as Paul Matthews who said that Romeo and Juliet was a, radical invention of a classic text . Although the film was released to late in the year to receive any awards, William Shakespeare s Romeo + Juliet was and always will be considered a classic. The reason for the film s success was because the film was made accessible to young people in a way that Shakespeare usually isn t by giving it modern location and using special effects. The film makers wanted to knock Shakespeare down and put him where he belongs which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Baz Luhrmann also cuts a lot of the complex imagery as it would not have been as appealing to a younger audience. They almost look like college beach boys, with their Hawaiian shirts and baggy trousers. This was a very good way to start the film as it gave it a modern cool look which would be appealing to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Color of eyes, straight or curly hair, pigmentation of the skin and certain diseases (such as Huntingdon s chorea) are all a function of the genes we inherit. Other physical characteristics, if not determined, appear to be at least strongly influenced by the genetic make up of our biological parents. Height, weight, hair loss (in men), life expectancy and vulnerability to specific illnesses (e.g. breast cancer in women) are positively correlated between genetically related individuals. These facts have led many to speculate as to whether psychological characteristics such as behavioral tendencies, personality attributes and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However nativists also argue that maturation governs the emergence of attachment in infancy, language acquisition and even cognitive development as a whole. At the other end of the spectrum are the environmentalists also known as empiricists (not to be confused with the other empirical / scientific approach). Their basic assumption is that at birth the human mind is a tabula rasa (a blank slate) and that this is gradually filled as a result of experience (e.g. behaviorism). From this point of view psychological characteristics and behavioral differences that emerge through infancy and childhood are the result of learning. It is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs the psychologically significant aspects of child development and the concept of maturation applies only to the biological. For example, when an infant forms an attachment it is responding to the love and attention it has received, language comes from imitating the speech of others and cognitive development depends on the degree of stimulation in the environment and, more broadly, on the civilization within which the child is reared. Examples of an extreme nature positions in psychology include Bowlby s (1969) theory of attachment, which views the bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures survival. Likewise, Chomsky (1965) proposed language is gained through the use of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Buchnera Aphidicol Southern Blot Analysis Aphids possess bacteriocytes that are specific to its obligate mutualist, Buchnera aphidicola. It seems that this genus has lost genes that are essential to its life. Through Southern Blot analysis, Nikoh and Nakabachi have shown that these lost genes are actually encoded in the aphid genome. Through detailed structural and phylogenetic analyses, the full length sequences of these transcripts were determined. This demonstrated that these transcripts are indeed significantly similar to multiple bacterial genes. While the Buchnera no longer possess these genes, other similar bacteria (E. Coli) possess these genes. Nikoh and Nakabachi were able to conclude that they found several pieces of evidence that show that aphids are indeed able to acquire genes from bacteria through lateral gene transfer. The same species as the one mentioned before, Buchnera aphidicola has a highly reduced genome, which increases the chances that gene transfer occurred from the bacteria to the aphid. Using the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, they were able to provide stronger support of the transfer of 12 genes from the bacteria to the aphid genome. While they were able to identify this transfer between the pea aphid and the bacteria, they found that none of these genes were transferred between Buchnera and the aphid, just like in the previous study. Sandstrom et al. looked at different ways this gene transfer could have occurred. Insects in general usually host secondary bacterial symbionts along with primary endosymbionts. Both symbionts are maternally transmitted. Their results showed that a community of bacteria invades aphid cells and are transmitted both vertically and horizontally among other aphid lineages. There was no work available to them so many women turned to prostitution and alcoholism. Surprisingly enough, however, the percentages of violent deaths was very low, with around 15 murders, and 50 cases of manslaughter a year. Bloody Sunday happened when the Social Democratic Federation (SDF) organised a meeting for 13th February, 1887 in Trafalgar Square to protest against the policies of the Conservative Government headed by the Marques of Salisbury. • 7. Maniac Analysis In every society there are those who reject the social and political status quo. Such characters can be portrayed as both heroes fighting an oppressive system or villains plotting to destabilize society. It all depends on the point of view and message which the author wishes to depict. Those who reject the official status quo, whether it be social or political, are not doing it just for themselves, but for the good of society as a whole. I will demonstrate this with the character known as the Maniac, from An Accidental Death of an Anarchist, and Berenger, from Rhinoceros; the Maniac rejects the status quo of society and calls for revolution (Fo 2009, 75), while Berenger calls on himself to take a stand against major societal changes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The act of creating new versions of the story, which the officers believe will save them, mirrors the reforms aimed at maintaining the status quo of society (Fo, 34 35). For the Maniac, exposing this scandal will act as the fertilizer of social democracy and therefore society will rise up a stronger, more enduring state (Fo, 81, 79). Therefore, from the passages referenced above, and the lack of evidence to the contrary, it is clear that the Maniac is acting in the best interests of society and not solely for himself. The character Berenger from Eugene Ionesco s Rhinoceros is in a different situation than the Maniac. Over the course of the play, many of the characters begin turning into rhinoceroses; it begins with a rhinoceros charging through the town square and scaring everyone, to Berenger s friends and colleagues transforming into rhinoceroses (Ionesco, 36, 70, 96). Despite all of those around him and society itself transforming, Berenger refuses to conform and takes up arms in opposition (Ionesco, 148). Berenger s rejection of rhinocerism is not quite the same as the Maniac opposing an already entrenched system and status quo, but it is a rejection of new social norms taking root. His belief in defending the moral laws and irreplaceable system of values, which his society is built upon gives him a purpose (Ionesco, 93 94). • 10. Symbolism In The Invisible Man 1. The chief difference between Wyeth s painting and Wall s photography is that the former acts as a complement to aid the readers understanding of the general story, while the latter acts as that of the protagonists life, in the point of view of the protagonist (in this case,) himself. As the text says, the former, though more popular than the text itself, becomes less meaningful without the original documents, because the synthesis of the Literature and the illustration is what provides the readers with the full experience of the book to imagine and be entertained by a story that does not usually happen (393). I generally agree with the comments of the MoMA s critique that Wall opened an entirely new way of illustration, in that Wall s approach was so inviting to the audience. The focal point of the picture is to the protagonist of the novel, the Invisible Man , and such emphasis does draw some eyes to the protagonist. However, at the same time, the whole picture is overwhelmed by the number of the lightbulbs above the man. Though everything is in real life sizes, the amount of the lightbulbs acts as a hyperbole, as the text suggests (394). Such override of the focus provides the audiences with more depth of cognition of the situation, and many times, it is not frequently possible in two dimensional settings, such as (comparatively) plain illustrations like those of Wyeth. In that sense, I think Wall s photography has opened a new way of the illustration. However, at the same time, I think his brilliancy is solely due to his use of the medium of photography. In other words, I think his only contribution to the illustration industry is the use of the film, which conveys different sets of images and cognition. Films could always do that, and perhaps thousands of the photographers have used such techniques in their work; there is nothing new about the technique itself. So the only difference Wall made was his synthesis of the film and the Literature to illustrate that specific ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In order to defend the strategy of nonviolent resistance to racism and respond to being called an outsider, King wrote his famous letter Letter from a Birmingham Jail. So why the King s letter is so powerful and convincing to the readers? Is it because of his identity of civil rights leader and his credibility(ethos)? Is it by the reason of the argument there are just laws and unjust laws (King) which he exerted numerous theoretical basis with utmost efforts(logos)? Or, It s due to his passionate writing style and the description of the image of the oppressed black people(pathos). Actually, It s all of them. These are the rhetorical method King used in his letter. At the beginning of the letter, King had already manifested his great ethos. He showed his sincere attitude to readers to better answer their questions, But since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I want to try to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms (King), which enabled him to establish his trust in some demanding readers. Ergot has been used for medical purposes since the late 1500s but was not acknowledged academically until the 1800s. Midwives used it to prevent excess bleeding during childbirth. Meaning, if something is not the strongest, smartest, and most adoptable of its kind it will surely die. This mindset was soon established by the main character White Fang. From the start he was the strongest of all the wolf cubs, being the only cub to survive the famine that plagued his family. White Fang s ability to adapt to his different environments is also a key point concerning to the theme of life. When the desires of the majority are systematically subverted to the desires a small and powerful minority, as is often in the case in the US, that system is an oligarchy. The democratic republic envisioned by the founding fathers has been replaced by an oligarchy to which they would have objected. I wanted to discuss the American Dream and All My Sons, but I also think that topic really, nicely goes into the relevance it has today. The American Dream can be worded and defined in different ways. But as stated in Question 1, The American Dream can be defined as the idea that in the US anyone can become successful through hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit. I think that is a definition that everyone can agree on, more or less. The Cambridge Dictionary also defines the American Dream, the belief that everyone in the US has the chance to be successful and happy if they work hard. Also as stated in Question 1, All My Sons is often described as a negative critique of the American Dream.
