Introduction
• Within this project we set out to make a promotional
video for Haverstock School aimed at future year 7
students. We got ourselves into groups of four,
which we then started our postproduction work and
research that we were assigned. As a group we
assigned each other roles and responsibility’s, this
was vital as it permitted us to complete this unit
efficiently.
Audience Research
• The target audience for our promotional video was directed at year 6
students moving on to secondary school education and their parent or
guardians. As a group we wanted to widen our target audience in
order to target parent and guardians because of this We had to have
a balance of information though out our promotional video for e.g. we
had to promote Haverstock whilst showing off the creative aspects of
the school plus engage future students but on the other hand we had
please parent and guardian who have traditional views on education.
• Through out our audience research as a group we created a
questionnaire-asking year 6 a set of questions such as students what
they were looking forward to in there new secondary school. We also
created a questionnaire for the parent and careers and from our
results we had gathered that the parents liked the thought of keeping
their child being safe and secure while also being educated to a high
standard. We had to relate to these specific objectives when filming so
they could receive the appropriate information from the promotional
video whilst having a friendly and safe environment.
Conventions Used
• The conventions from professional promotional videos that we wanted to replicate within our own promotional
video were the following
• L-cuts-this is effective as it allows the audience to not only receive information from the interviewee but also be
able to see what is being described or presented
• Fades –Fades are affective as it gives the promotional videos a nice calm and peaceful transition, as that is the
message we are trying to portray of Haverstock School. but also look visually pleasing
• Interviews - The interview are vital convention when making a promotional video, as they are common technique.
It allows people being filmed to speak directly about events, prompted by the questions asked by the filmmaker (in
this case Haverstock school)
• Visual Coding –visual coding is key when creating a promotional video as it sets the mise-en-scene and makes the
promotional video more reliable.
• Text and titles –text and titles are key as they aid the audience when identifying interview's.
Research within Factual
Productions
• To be able to make a good promotional video we undertook
lots of research and planning tasks such as analyzing the KES
promotional video. This was extremely important as it
contained all the promotional video conventions. We extracted
the camera angles, shot types, L-cuts, voice overs etc. this
aided us to get a better understanding of the conventions of a
promotional video. We had to also do some research on factual
media Formats this was key as it assisted us on how
professionals use these conventions to send out information
i.e. when interviewing someone from a highly respected
perfusion that they had the visual coding to match for e.g. news
Anker dressed in formal and respectable clothing
Strengths And weaknesses
• Throughout the whole Process of create our promotional video
as a group we sat together and viewed our progress and
strengths but also had to identify our weaknesses. One
strengths was the fact that it was fairly easy getting interviews
and shots of the school before our deadline. One weakness
that we were constantly faced with was meeting deadlines for
our postproduction work. We later resolved problem by being
aware of our mistake and learning from them.
• One of our greatest strengths were distributing the work, we
came up with and ideas that we should all take a part of this
unit and do it by ourselves, we then later decided to help each
other sharing ideas and skills. For example Mustaf and Endrin
helped each other to film and came up with ideas together. We
also shared the work equally for example, one of us had to do
the filming schedule, another had to do audience research etc.
Post Production
Although we did do many more pre production tasks this is
just some to show the audience. Some of the pre
production tasks we undertook was audience research, this
was important because we needed to find out what the
audience liked before we finish editing our video, this way
we can create a better and more effective promotional
video with all of the codes and conventions because we
know what the audience are looking for.
Another pre production task we used was a storyboard, this
helped us when we were filming although we did not
completely follow the story board we used most of the
shots and the interviews that we had come up with. This
was also useful because it meant we could film right away
knowing the shots we are going to shoot.
Review of finished product
After we was told about the final edited product, the group had come
together and evaluated how we felt the process of the filming and editing
went and we had also watched our promotional video and we had felt that
the video itself had revealed all of the school in and enticing and advertising
fashion. We had also felt that it displayed all the conventions of a
promotional video, the effective L cuts and fades allowed us to use the
school to our effectiveness within our video. Compare to our original planned
product it has differed quite a lot we felt that in our original plan the school
wasn’t portrayed to an advertising standard.
Our promotional video appealed to our target audience because it follows
the codes and conventions of a promotional video and it also shows what we
do here at Haverstock school. We also feel that it is appealing due to how we
displayed the lessons as a group we didn’t want a lesson to be seen as
students being quite and not getting involved we had wanted to show the
relationship students and teachers as being a fun type of relationship.
Thank you and i hope you enjoy our promotional video
