1. Assignment 1 web authoring
In this report I will be discussing web authoring, protocols, design conventions and software in
greater detail.
Web authoring is a category of software that enables the user to develop a Web site in a desktop
publishing format.
Protocols
Internet relies on a number of protocols in order to function properly. A protocol is simply a
standard for enabling the connection, communication, and data transfer between two places on a
network. Uniform resource locator is a web address of a website. Domain names are vital as it
has to be memorable so it’s easily accessible for users. For example twitters domain name is
www.twitter.com.
This is memorable because it links in with the logo of the company which is a bird. The top level
domain is the highest form of domain in the hierarchical domain name system. The last section of
the URL indicates the type of website it is or can indicate its location. It splits up into three main
groups: Countries, Categories, and Multiorganizations. It outlines country codes UK, JP,
organisation’s codes; AC, GOV. The internet service providers are companies such as BT, Virgin,
PlusNet and Talk Talk which gives us an address so that we can access the internet. Hosting allows
companies or individuals to host their own websites or files which are accessible to other via the
World Wide Web. There are often a monthly or annually fee for this. Websites are made of lots of
pages which all use the same URL. It is vital that the website has a suitable name which reflects
the content on that page .for example the website should have the basics such as a hompage,
contact us and about us so that it is clear to the person browsing the site.
Design conventions
The rule of thirds is one of the most important design principles it’s a rule that is applied to the lay
out and composition of images and websites.

2. It’s a key concept because it structures the site and
sets the tone for the site.
Websites and images can be divided into three vertical lines and three horizontal lines where
those lines cross are points of focus the eye is naturally drawn to those positions. A web site that
uses the rule of thirds is universally is seen as eye catching and tidy.
Monochromatic means one use of only one colour but it can be different tone etc. for example
Complimentary colours are colours which are opposite but work very well together they are
always found opposite each other on the colour wheel.
Finding the right font for a website is important visually because it has to go with the website as
people are going to judge and fonts are divided into two categories serif and sans serif. Sans serif
means the letter are clear and have no serifs.
