2. Resources
Pre-production is important for the smooth running of a project. It
is for you to go through final development and organisation for
your project before you start production.
The pre-production tasks you do will depend on your project. You
need to undertake appropriate tasks in order to make your project
work.
A production schedule should be in everyone’s project.
The blue slides are here to give advice. This advice can also be
found in the main lecture. Delete when you don’t need it. Don’t
submit your work with this in.
3. PRE-PRODUCTIONPre-production paperwork for a print production could include:

7. PRE-PRODUCTION• Style sheet
– Collection of potential choice you could make for your products visuals
(colours, image styles and fonts). Provide some indication of which ones
you will use, where you will use them and reasons why
– This should explore alternatives to everything- don’t just include one
option. Look at several potential aspects to include and reference the ones
you plan to use and why
• Layout Plans
– Potential designs you could do for your product using images, fonts and
colours from style sheet
8. PRE-PRODUCTION Colour schemes:
This is important for
any visual product.
Talk about the options
you have, the
decisions you are
making and relate
your ideas back to
exiting products and
your target audience.
11. Pre-production
• What are you making? (explain what you have been asked to
do)
• I am making a magazine cover , double page spread and merchandise. If I have any additional time left I will also make a
magazine advert.
• Why? (What is the purpose of making your Film)
• The purpose of my magazine cover and double page spread is to entertain the audience as well as to act as a form of
escapism. The aim for my merchandise is different , the aim is to produce something that links to my magazine and that the
audience want to wear this. This is the same as every other purpose for clothing.
• Who is it for? (Audience)
• The products will be aimed at my audience which is young people aged 17-19. this is because I feel that they are most interested in
street wear and also hip hop. This is who I am trying to aim at because street wear is a large part of hip hop and there clothes are often
looked at.
• Where will it appear/on what? (How will audience see it)
• The audience will see this on the internet as well as on shelves. This will be noticed by the audience as I will include bright colours a bold
main image and a large masthead. The merchandise will again be seen online and also on the shelves in clothing shops. The magazine
will be seen in most shops.
Reflection:
12. Camera shot Camera angle movement description
2 Medium shot Medium angle
static This will be of the artist
and will be to show the
audience the artist. This
is the same in all the
shots. The idea of these
shots will be to indicate
to the audience that this
is a musician and that
this is a magazine which
is hip hop related.
3 Medium close

4 Full shot Medium angle

5 Close up Medium angle

6 Long shot Medium angle

These shots will most likely not all be used as I am not looking to include this many photos. This is just planning for these specific shots
which I may include. When it comes to production I will take photos from these angles and have these shots but may not include them.
This is because they may not suit the magazine cover or the double page spread. These shots are conventional shots of magazine covers
and also those included in double page spreads. The shot most likely shots to be used are medium close up or a medium shots. This is
because they show the artist very clearly and focus on the face. This is because they are known and recognized from that.
13. LAYOUTS- double page spread
Filled columns. These will be filled with an article about the musician. The contents will specifically about
his new album, tour and music. to do this I will set the layout to columns within InDesign. The columns sill
be all the same size and will be aligned with one and other. This is because this will look the double page
spread look more organized and will look better. This will follow the conventions of professional double
page spreads, this is what I am trying to achieve.
The start and end column at either side will be empty. This will be because then I can
include a quote from one of the columns or have a graphic. This is often a thing that is used
in magazine double pages.
In this bit I will include a main image and on the other side there may be an
image or there could be a little insight into what the article is going to be
about. This would be noticeable and would fit this half. The main image
would be off the model who I would claim to be a music artist.
At the ends of this double page
spread I will include the margins.
These are positioned at the
bottom left and the bottom right.
In one of these places I will include
page numbers. This is due to them
being a conventional element. This
is also so that the audience can
find a specific page. A double page
spread consists of a 3x3 grid
meaning there are 3 columns
going horizontal and vertical. I will
sick to these so that this is all
aligned correctly.
14. Empty space. This is going to be used for either a quote or possibly a graphic. This space could
even be used for more images. These would be of the artist or even could be off tours and
albums. The margins at the end of the page will be filled with something. In this space I may
decide to use heavier colors so that the double page spread doesn't’t look as plain.
this is where the main image of the artist will be. This is a usual spot on a
magazine double page spread. This will be positioned there on mine as this
will be the first thing the audience should look at. This being if the look left
to right.
These will be columns of the
article. The article will be the
same and will be about the
musician. The columns will
be all aligned and spaced out
so that the audience can
have a break from reading.
The reason that I may choose this layout is because I feel that this will appeal to the audience. By this mean that they will
first see the main image of the artist first and then look at the information surrounding the article. This would be in the
space next to the image. This would be a statement or like a rhetorical question. This would be similar to ‘What has this
person (artist) been up to’. This would be in a bold font. This would be because I would want the audience to look at this
before they look at the article. This is because this will give them same information or an indication to what is in the article.
This then will allow them to make up their mind if they want to read it.
15. On this layout the main image is half of the page. This will again be off the artist.
This is because the article is going to be about the artist. The main image will be
taken in front of either the green screen or a white screen. Most likely the white
screen. This will look clean and will not be blurry.
In this section there will either be a quote which has been pulled from
the article or some text. The text will be like a title /statement to let the
audience know what the article is about. This will be large font and will
be noticeable.
This is where the article
will be and it will all be
aligned to make it look
professional. This will
look professional and
better due to it being
I may decide to choose this layout for my magazine double page spread. This is because it is similar to the layouts I have used before. This
layout here is slightly more advanced to the ones I have worked with. This being because I did not work with columns. This made my pervious
double page spreads look less organized and ultimately not professional. This layout would include a heading or statement similar to the
previous slide. This would indicate to the audience what the article is about. On this I will use bold text and would be noticeable as stated
above. The colors I will use will be those that specifically link to the artist. For example if they wear a yellow hoodie I will include yellow
colored font. This being because it will make the whole design look more organized. From the organization the magazine will then look more
like a real one, this is my aim. This is also a convention of magazines having colors that link together.
16. This is the final choice for my layout. This is the layout I have chosen because it is something different than before. The biggest reason I am
choosing to do my double page spread like this is because I feel like I could personally do a better job this way and this looks like it would
suit my style better. This being because I would not have to cram a rhetorical question or statement and would look better. The colors I
am thinking of using will be those that link to the picture. The other colors of such things like text and page numbers will be most likely
black. This is because black text is simple and is easy to read. Black colored font in an article is also I would say a convention. For my
magazine I am aiming to include as many conventions as possible. This is to make my magazine look as real and professional as possible.
FINAL LAYOUT
17. This is where the masthead will be. The masthead will be positioned here for two
reasons. One reason being that this is that the top of the page therefore the audience
will be able to see what the magazine is called. This is something that is important. This
is because every product has a name or a brand. The masthead being this magazines
brand. If the masthead is tat the top of the page it will mean that the audience see this
first and then look at for example the main image. The other reason why I will include
the masthead at the top is because it is a convention of a magazine cover. I want to
follow the conventions because I want my magazine to look as real and as professional
as possible.
The masthead I am thinking off creating is going to be something bold and large. The
font will be similar to those I do in my style sheet. The font will be large and will be bold
so that the audience instantly see it. Bold large font as a masthead is also a convention
of magazine covers. The large font will indicate to the audience that this is a big thing
and is the magazines brand. This is important for customers as if they are for say repeat
customers they will be able to see the masthead clearly when looking for it.
The main image will be placed here on this layout. This is
because it is central. Another reason why I will have it here and
have it this size is because then the audience will be able to see
what type of magazine this is. This is by the main image
including hip hop connotations. The connotations are those
such as urban and street wear. The main image will be one of
those shots in my shot list and will also be light. This is because
it will stick out more than for example if it was a dark image.
I will include a barcode here so that the costumers can purchase the product. This is the
same reason all magazine covers have a barcode on them. The barcode will be in the
bottom right corner because it is out the way and really has no relevance to music. The
barcode also if people are reading from top to bottom left to right should mean that the
barcode will be the last thing they see.
This is where the headines and the text will go on the
cover. This is because they are fairly central and will be
really only visible from close. This is because they will
be in a small font and will be only visible when the
audience pick up the magazine. This is because the
main image and the masthead should be enough to
draw the audience's attention to the cover. The
headiness will be about music and will include words
such as exclusive and free. This is because people like
to feel like it is only available t them and also people
want more for there money s.
18. The masthead will be at the top of the page due to this being a convention of print media. The
masthead will be the same as the other layout. The masthead will consist of large font and will be
most likely black. This is because this will stand out to the audience. The matshead here will show the
audience what the magazine is called this will be done by it being bold and large. The colour of the
masthead which at the moment is likely to be black.
The red box below the masthead will be the fist headline. This headline will be the most important
due to it being raised before the main image. This headline will be something important that i want
the audience to see. This would be something like ‘breaking news or exclusive information’. The
headline will hopefully draw people's attention in to the magazine. The headlines will be
approximately size 32 font and will be either black or another colour linking to the main image.
The main image is the large white box. The ,main image will be this size because it is the most
important element on the page. This is because the main image will cause the most attention from
the audience. This is because if they for say like the look of the model they are likely to look closer at
the magazine. The main image will also suggest the genre of the magazine. This is because if the
model for example looks quite urban they will assume the magazine is a hip hop or something like a
skateboarding magazine. When the audience get closer to the magazine they will then know that this
is a hip hop music magazine due to the headlines.
The black box will state the artists name. The font will be large and will be bold so that the audience
can clearly see it. I will include the artists name so that the audience can basically see who the artist
is. For my magazine i am going to assume that the artist is famous. The name might also appeal to my
demographic because they may of heard of the artist however may not know what he or she looks
like and vice versa.
The green box at the bottom will be where the barcode will be. I am including this because this is a
conventional element. The other reason why i'm including this is so that the customers can purchase
this product.
The background for both of the covers will be something simple like white which a hint of grey or
something similar. This is because it will allow the headings and images to stand out.
19. Black color pallet
This shade of black and more of a grey color will be used as either a background
or as a lighting effect. This would be used to make the background look darker in
places to make it look more full. The grey color would be used as a background
because it makes something like a picture and headings stand out. The
background itself will look less plain then for example if it was white.
This color on my double page spread will not be as such a main color
however it will be used to maybe add shadows and to make the page look
fuller. This is often used within magazine. I will use black as masthead or a
headline colour most likely. This will depend on what the main image looks
like and if it fits.
Black is a bold colour and makes other elements stand out. By this I mean
that if there was a headline which was inclined in black or would make the
headline stand out more. I may choose to do this because i want my
magazine cover to stand out to the customers. Black will most likely be used
in my double page spread. This will be used as the article. This is because the
majority of double page spreads include black text. Another reason is that it
stands out on the majority of backgrounds. The final reason is that black is
clear and easy to read. This is something I want the audience to do because
an article is there to be read.
On my merchandise I may choose to include a black t-shirt and this will be most likely.
I will also most likely include a grey t-shirt. This is because these t-shirt colours are
conventional for this project. The t-shirts will also feature the masthead of the
magazine. These colours will be targeted at 16 to 18 year olds. These colours will
appeal to my audience because firstly these t-shirt colours are very popular. This is
shown by brands such as champion, Tommy Hilfiger and also Hugo boss who sell grey
and black t-shirts. These brands seem to be worn by a vast amount of people, this
shows that they like the colour as well as the brand. For my merchandise I will include
more colours. This is because I want to appeal to several different types of people.
20. For my magazine cover I may include the colour yellow and also different
shades of yellow because these are unconventional colours. All though I
want to appeal to all the conventions of magazine and print based media i
also think that my demographic may also be interested in and attracted to
unconventional elements. This is because 16 to 19 year olds are interested
in unique items. This is shown by brands like supreme who sell unique
clothing items and accessories and they manage to sell out. All though my
products don't include any weird strange accessories I still think that the 16
to 19 year old demographic are interested in unique items. For my
magazine I may try out several different colour schemes. The aim is to
create a conventional magazine cover which is organised and unique. By
conventional elements I mean include a masthead headlines and cover
lines etc.
The gold colours is also associated with hip hop and rap music. This is
because of the gold chains and jewelry. This means that gold may be a
likely colour to include. For my magazine I want the main image to match
with the headlines and the text. By this I mean that if the model was
wearing for example yellow I would want to include yellow or like gold text
and headlines because they would link together. I want to do this because i
think it would make my magazine cover look professional as well as
organized. An organized magazine cover is a conventional element.
21. For my merchandise i will include possibly 3-5 different colours. This is because some of my audience may
prefer different colours. This is basically to give them more of an option. The shirts will be fairly simple in the
sense that they will be one colour and will include the masthead in the middle. For the masthead i am thinking
to have it arched. This is because this makes the shirt look more interesting. I have seen this design on many t
shirts such as supreme and thrasher ones. These are brands that are very popular and are often talked about.
This is what i want my magazine brand to be. The merchandise will be in sizes from s-xxl , this is because i feel
that this covers the vast majority of my demographic. For my merchandise i just plan on making t shirts and
hoodies and also if possible some hats. This is because i feel that the merchandise would be just a bit boring if i
only included t shirts.
These tshirts will be specifically targeted at 16-19 year olds and the demographic will also specifically be male.
This is because this is a side product based from a hip hop magazine. The hip hop magazine will be male based
due to rap being heavilly male targetted. This is shown by the audiences at performances. This is also shown by
the clothing the artists wear. By thus i mean that they wear clothes which target the male audience.

Costume needed
Locations needed
Camera Studio in college, this will be booked for
the week of production.
Computer The only locations I need for my fmp is the
studio. This is because my project is print
based. The photos will be off the model in
the studio , behind the model will be a
clear white backdrop. This is because it will
look more professional that way. This is
because it will look more organised and
this will also allow me to do what ever i
want to the picture. This is due to the
white background being easy to remove.

23. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
If the camera stops taking pictures because the memory card is full.
This would limit the amount of photos I would be able to take. This
would then have an impact on my final product as the picture may
possibly be from the wrong angle or possibly the pictures could be
blurry.
to solve this problem if It was to happen I would make sure that the
memory card has lots of free space on it. This would be enough for
maybe like 100 photos. Although I might not take that many I could
and then will have better photos to choose from. I will also make sure
the camera is still.
memory stick breaks or corrupts and I loose all my work. To avoid this issue I will make sure to backup
my work to other places like my email and also
Google docs. This will allow me to get it back if i
for say lost it.
computer crashes whilst creating my magazine
cover.
to avoid this I will make sure I save the file to
my memory stick and desktop frequently this is
so if the computer does crash i should not lose
much if any work.
The lighting does not work in the studio so
can't get good photos.
if this happens I will have to find a technician
or get someone to fix them. If they can not be
fixed I will have to either use the normal lights
or go into the studio another day.
if I forget my memory stick , this will affect me
because my work is on my memory stick.
in case this does happen I will make sure that i
have different copies backed up. These will be
on my desktop in my emails and on an online
storage website like Google drive.
24. Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
Getting burned by the studio lights. This will be avoided by myself not touching
them and being careful around them.
Harming your eyes by looking into the studio
lights.
Do not look into the studio lights.
Falling over the light wires. Always look where everyone is going and do
not mess around.
Back ache from chair when on the computer
when editing.
this will be avoided by sitting up straight and
also adjust the chair. Have regular rest brakes.
Stress, this could be because of not arranging
models or failing to complete work to the
deadlines.
This will be avoided by being prepared and
organised and also catch up with other work in
spare time.
Tripping over the backdrop in the studio. this could be avoided by me and the model
looking where we are going at all times and
being careful when in the studio.
25. Production Schedule
Day/Lesson Tasks
2 lessons maximum. Take photos of the model. This will be done in
the studio.
2 lessons I then need to edit the photos to make them
look professional and aesthetically pleasing
before placing them onto my magazine cover
and double page spread.
6 lessons maximum maybe 5 days After that i will then make a start on making my
front cover of my magazine.
1-3 days After finishing my front cover i will start writing
my article and then start creating my double
page spread.
About 3 days I will then finish my double page spread and
get someone to see if everything looks okay
and see what could be improved.
About 2 days. I plan on making some merchandise. This
should not take too long. After i complete this i
will get the tutor to look over everything to see
