WAVES IN A SLINKY
By S. Choi
AIM & HYPOTHESIS
•  Aim: To observe
transverse and
longitudinal waves in a
slinky.
•  Hypothesis: Write your
own hypothesis in your
experimental report.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
•  Waves are vibrations that
transfer energy from place
to place.
•  Waves can either be
mechanical (need
medium) or
electromagnetic (does
NOT need a medium).
•  Waves can also be
categorised as transverse
or longitudinal waves.
EQUIPMENT
•  1 × slinky
•  1 × camera/phone
•  1 × coloured tape or
string
•  1 × mobile phone or
chromebook with
GIFPAL app working
RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Injury Prevention
METHOD
Part A – Transverse waves
1.  Place the slinky on the floor.
2.  Attach the coloured tape or
string onto the middle of the
slinky.
3.  Have TWO people hold the
each end of the slinky and
stretch the slinky out in a
straight line.
4.  Move ONE end of the slinky
side to side. Use GIFPAL to
create animated gif of slinky
movement.
5.  Describe the movement of the
coloured tape/spring under the
results.
DON’T stretch the slinky out too far!
METHOD

slinky.
3.  Have TWO people hold the
each end of the slinky and
stretch the slinky out in a

4.  Move ONE end of the slinky
back and forth. Use GIFPAL
to create animated gif of slinky
movement.
5.  Describe the movement of the
coloured tape/spring under the
results.
DON’T stretch the slinky out too far!
RESULTS
Part A – Transverse waves
•  Upload your animated gif file in your experimental report
•  Direction of the wave: …………….
•  Direction of the coloured tape/string: …………….
Part B – Longitudinal waves
•  Upload your animated gif file in your experimental report
•  Direction of the wave: …………….
•  Direction of the coloured tape/string: …………….
DISCUSSION
1.  What does the coloured tape/string represent?
2.  Draw a diagram comparing the movement of the
coloured tape/string and the direction of the wave in the
transverse wave (Click Insert à Drawing…).
3.  Provide ONE example of a transverse wave in real life.
4.  Draw a diagram comparing the movement of the
coloured tape/string and the direction of the wave in the
longitudinal wave (Click Insert à Drawing…).
5.  Provide ONE example of a longitudinal wave in real
life.
6.  What kind of energy is transferred through the slinky?
CONCLUSION
•  Write your own conclusion of the experiment in your
experimental report.
