PR5: Remakesandproductionfactorswhichinfluence them
I will talkaboutthe productionfactorsthat influence remakes.Forexample, remakesare createdfor
a numberof reasoneitherforto promote merchandise tothe filmorevenforanartisticside
because some of the original couldn’tcome totermsonthe visual theyneededbutbecause of
technologyanditsevolutionproducerscancreate worldclosertothe comic or whateverthe storyis
basedon.Whenthe firstremake came aroundthere were alot of remakesafterthat creatinga
trendfor the filmindustriesitchangeshow itlooks. Thenthere have vertical andhorizontal
integration, firstwe have vertical whichis the processinwhichseveral stepsinthe productionand
distributionof aproductare controlledbyasingle company, inordertoincrease that company’s
powerinthe marketplace. Thenwe have Horizontal whichis muchmore commonandsimplerthan
vertical integration,Horizontal integrationsimplymeansastrategytoincrease yourmarketshare by
takingovera similarcompany.Thisbuyoutcanbe done inthe same geographyor probablyinother
countriestoincrease yourreach.
So we will firsttalkaboutthe franchise Dreddsothat will be the Dreddin1995 andthe remake of
thiswhichtookplace in 2012, as Dredd forthe original itwas SylvesterStallone andforthe remake it
was Karl Urban, the directorof the original movie wasDannyCannonandforthe remake it wasPete
Travis,thenthe productioncompanyforthese two
movies,forthe original there are;HollywoodPictures
and Cinergi Pictureswhere the remake hasmore
with;IMGlobal,DNA FilmsandReliance
Entertainment. Thenthere have how muchthey
made,startingwiththe original againitearned,well
itsbudgedwasaround £45.5 millionwhere the
remake onlywasaround £32.5 millionthis was
probablybecause in1994 theydidn’thave the right
software inorderto geta betterlookmakingthem
spendmore because of lackof software.Thenforthe
movie itself onhowmuchitearnedforthe remake, onthe weekof release itmade £5,408,843.56
whichmeansitdidn’treachits budgetstraightawayina weekbutthe as time passedonitmade
£26,673,519.08 whichmeansit didn’tgetas muchas the budget. Then there have the original
whichmade around£16,667,556.85 on the weekof release anditgrossworldwide wasaround
£73,754,538.76 so it almostdidtriple the remake made whichisstrange where itwouldexpectitbe
the otherway around. The productioncompanyreleasedthe 1995 versionontoBlu-raywhenthe
remake wasout incinemato getpeople towatchit and getfamiliarwiththe original. Iaskmyself
whythe companieswouldneedtoremake afranchise like this,I’ve mentionedsome of the reasons
but notmuch intodetailed.Forexample, the software in1995 wasn’tthe bestso theymostlyhadto
relyon setsandreal life locationsbutforthe remake theydidn’thave torelyonit as muchbecause I
watcheda behindthe sceneswhichshowshow theycreatedsome of theirlandscapesforexample
theyusednormal shotsthat featuredsouthAfricawhichwaswhere theyshot andtheyusedCGIto
add itcertainbuildingsthatweren’tactuallythere.Theycouldn’tdothatin1995 so from a visual
pointof viewitlooksbetterthanthe remake because theyare able tocreate what theywanted
withoutspendingloadsof moneyforsetswhentheycancreate theirownenvironmentsandcosts
alotlessand looksbettervisually.Sotoanswermyquestionbefore youcansafelysaythatbecause
bettertechnologyhasbeencreatedforfilmingbutformanyotherreasonsthattheydecidedtore-
visitthe Judge Dredduniverse butitdidn’tjustbenefitthe remake butitalsomade people wantto
findoutmore about it,like Isaidbefore theyreleasedthe 1995 versiononblu-raywhichwould
make people wanttowatch the original.Ievenwatcheditafterwatchingthe remake Iwentto
watch the original andthe difference isoutstandingyoucantell thatthe original wasn’tbestin
visual butstill tookaspectsfromthe comic. The remake waskeyon visual effectswhenitcame to
the story because itwasabout a drug that made youthinkyouwas seeingslowerthannormal
speed,Iwatchedanotherbehindsthe sceneswhichshowedhow theycreatedthe scene they
mentionedthattheyusedacameracalledphantomcamerawhichallowsthemtorecord at around
3000fps whennormallyyouwouldonlyshootat24fps whichisalotdifferencewhichishow they
record, theydida trial before handtoshow whattheywantedand youcan see the resultsinthe film
theyare amazingbecause itmakesitlookgraceful eventhoughit’sadrugthat causesit. The SFX
usedmade the scenesmore beautiful towatchwhichmade the remake seemeverbetterbecauseof
the use of technology.Thenanotheraspectyoucouldthinkaboutwhich wouldboostwhenyousee
the remake itcomesdownto the synergywhere youhave merchandise suchast-shirts,posters,
accessorieslotsmore. You’dexpecttosee alotof thisto sell outwhenthe filmwouldhave been
releasedbecausefansof itwouldwant to buystuff referencingthe filmasarememberof the film
plusyoucouldsay it wouldgetpeople toreadthe comicsbecause the comicshave more than the
filmhasto offermore storyif you enjoyedthe storyside insteadof the visuals. Forexample, there is
a site called 2000adcollectables,the difference thingsthatare like;t-shirts,mugs,phonecover,
wallets, boardgames, comics, conceptart and figures there are manymore thingsalongthose lines.
Here are couple of those thingsfromthe website:
These are justa fewof whatI saw and like Isaidbefore aboutthe benefitsforthe remake onhow
the filmwouldimpactonthe synergywell itwouldhelpthe merchandisesellmore because more
people willgetinterestedintothe universe of charactersandwantto read more aboutit whichisa
goodthingbecause thentheywouldknow thattheyhave a biggerfanbase because of all the
merchandise boughtaroundthe world.
Nextwe come to the secondpart of PR5 where
we are goingto talkabout anotherfilmcalledRec
and itsremake counterpartQuarantine theyare
differentbecause Recwasa Spanishbasedfilm
where Quarantine wasremade because notmany
people enjoyedwatchingsubtitledfilm.First
wouldbe Rec,was releasedin2007 directedby
Jaume BalagueróandPaco Plazaand the
producerswere;CarlosFernándezasexecutive
producer,JulioFernándezalsoasexecutive
producer/producer,thenthereisTeresaGefaellasthe line producerbutalso Oriol Maymó and
finallythere isAlbertoMarini asco-executive producer. Whichbrings usto the cast, the main
character wouldbe the reporterwhoisplayedby ManuelaVelasco the othercharactersthat are in
the filmplayona role suchas there isa fireman, policemanandthere are afew characters that live
inthe residents.Thenthe distributorswere CastelaoProducciones,Filmax,TelevisiónEspañola the
one I recognisedwasFilmax whichlaterwasboughtbySonywhichiswhy we hadthe remake of Rec.
Like I saidit wasoriginatedfromSpainanditis basedinSpaintoo.Thenthere isthe budgetandthe
box office takingsIwill convertitintopoundslike IpresentedforDredd.Sothe budgetwasaround
£1.2 millionwhichisquite smallafterall itwascreatedbya small productioncompanyinSpain, then
there isthe box office, anditmade around £24 millionworldwide whichisquite goodbecausethat
meant5% of whattheyearnedwastheirbudgetwhichisquite goodfora small independent
company. Nextthere isQuarantine, directedbyJohnErickDowdle,ProducedbySergioAguero
producer(asSergioAgüero) andDougDavisonwere the mainproducersbutyou hadthe executive
producersfromrec for thismovie aswellsotheykeptedthemonmaybe tohave the same feel as
theyusedonrec, thenyouhave the cast itwas prettythe same because mostof the storywas
inspiredtorecso the characters were the same justwithamericanactors. For example, Jennifer
Carpenterasthe reporterthenthere isSteve HarrisandJay Hernandezasthe nexttwomainactors.
Andale Pictures,ScreenGems,VertigoEntertainment andlike Isaidthat sonyboughtoverthe rights
for RecScreengemsare that companythat are associatedwitSony.ItoriginatedinUSA like i
explainedbefore sothattheycouldgetfansto watch the remake because theydidn’twanttowatch
the original because of itsspanishorgins.Budgetwasaround£7.8 Millionanditmade around£22
millionwhichmore thanitsbudgetbutitseemsasthoughRec made more and itwoulddo because I
thinkQuarantine isjust anexact copyof Recjust made forthe englishspeakingsociety. Youcould
say that the directorfeltlike itwouldbe dissorningif theyjustchangedthe whole movie and
changeditentilingsoitbe differnettoRecbutit doesstickby it,so roughlythe difference wouldjust
be that the technologywouldbe differentbecause Filmax ondistrubedtothe filminorderforitto
be made, thenwhensonyboughtthe filmrighttheywere thenable todistrubtedconstribute and
produce mostof it,causingthe visual be alotbetterthanthe original because of asmallerbudget
but thenalsothe cast were differentbutsome still lookedverysimiliartothe previousroles. Then
thinkaboutwhytheymade a remake of itfor the englishlanguage audiences, itisvery simplyandI
saidbefore people don’twanttowatch subtitledfilm, if youcreate anamericanmoneyboththe
previousfilmwouldmake moneybecause itwouldbe usedsome the aspectsof the filmsbutalso
the filmitself wouldmake alotof moneybecause more thanjustthe audience itpreviouslyhad
wouldwatchthe remake because of itssimilariteswithrec.Thenyouhave the interview withthe
director of Rec,the reasonwhytheydecidedtogo for the documentaryfeel wasbecause they
wantedtheiraudience rightupinthe actionmakingthemfeel asthoughthe personbehindthe
camera iseach personwhoiswatchingthe filmmakingitfeel real andmakesthe whole situation
alotworse worksgreat inhorror movies.Forrec’scompetitionin2007 was cloverfield anddiaryof
the deadand the directerwasaskedwas youconcernedaboutthese,he saidthatthe filmwas
alreadymade before these filmshadanyinformationregradingplottothe storysohe seemed
confidentenoughandnotafriadof the competition.Itmentionsthatthe rightwere boughtby
anothercompanythiswas screengems, these were asmallercompanythe real companywassony
and wastoldfrom sonytheywill produce Quarantine tothe englishlanguageaudience. Theywanted
to getit out as soonas possible sothatthe audience wasn’tthinkingthatitwasdisrespectfuland
people whowouldhave wantedtosee the filminenglishwouldgetachance whenthe filmcame
out a yearlater.
I’ll have a lookat the filmcarrie and whyitwas remade,The original wasreleasedin1976 andthe
remake wasin2013, the directorfor the original was BrianDe Palmaand forthe remake itwas
KimberlyPeirce andplayingasCarrie the maincharacter wasfor the original
was SissySpacek thenlaterforthe remake Chloë
Grace Moretz as the role the reasonwas because she
was a huge star due to herpreviousrolessuchasKick-
Assmakingherright forthe role butit made the movie
more popularfor people wholikedseeingherin
previousfilms.Whentalkingaboutspecial effectsyou
couldsay itwas similartoDreddbecause backin 1976
theydidn’thave the software thatwe have today
whichiswhythe remake wasa lotbettertheyeven
promotedthe filmbecause there wasavideoonyoutube anditviewedafew actorsina café and
whencustomerscame intheywouldgetintoargumentsthencausingthemtouse a teleknislike
powerfreakingthe customersout,whenitwasall overitthenrevealsthatitis a promotionforthe
newfilmcarrie.
So because of the newtechnology the productioncompaniesprocessbecause easierwaythanusing
setsor props thatwouldbe messysuchas blood.NextI’ll talkaboutthe Horizantal intergration, the
example I’ll use are these films; The Karate Kid,Annie and
AboutLast Night. All the orignal versionsof the filmsso
like;The Karate Kid(1984) was producedbycolumbia
pictures,Annie (1982) wasalso createdbycolumbia
picturesandfinally youhave aboutlastnight(1986) was
alsocolumbia.Ichoose these filmsbecauseColumbiawas
thenboughtin1989 whichthentheycreatedthe remakes
in;The Karate Kid(2010),Annie(2014) and finallyAboutLastNight(2014) thentheyrecreate the films
withnewertechnologyandbringingbackforsynergy
purposissuchas release of blu-rayforthe original film.So
overall these wouldjustbe afewof the examples, there
wouldbe loadsanotherexamplethere isDisneybuyingright
frommarvel whichwouldbe a type of Vertical intergration
the same withsonyand 20th
centuryfox but justrecently
sonyhas sold theirrightfor the spidermanfranchisetoDisneybuttheystill have asayin some soit
wouldclassas some sortof Vertical Intergrationanditsbenefactial because Disneyproduce the
avengerswhichcame outgreat andwhentheyremade spidermanitwasn’tasgoodas the firsttwo
featuringTobyMcguire.
Nextthe thingsthatinfluncedthe remke of rec.Forexample there is;Finical factors,Trends,Genre
and popularity,synergyandvertical intergration.Firstletstalkaboutfinaical factorsthiswouldbe
goodfor bothFilmax andscreengems(sony) theywillbothgetthe moneyonthe remake soit would
influencebecause itwillbe makingmore moneyandif sobe able to create sequelsforthe films
whichtheydida fewyearsafter,thenyouhave trends,genre andpopularity.Youcansee that rec
didreallywell bymaknigalotof moneysoitwouldhave influencedthe remakebecause thereare
more people willingtowatchit inenglishbecause theycanrelate tothatmore becuase of james’s
visiononwhyhe createdrec so that youcouldfeel asthoughyouwas apart of the filmpluspeople
enjoyhorrorfilmsandpeople liketolookforthingstheyhaven’tseenif theyhaven’tseenrecfirstof
course.You couldsay whentalknigaboutsynergythattheycreatedthe filmcausedpeople togo
watch the original movie makingthemtogetmoneyfrompeople watchingthe remake butaswell as
the original film.Vertical intergrationhadalotto do withitjustbecasue that sonyownedthe
companyscreengemswhichthenthey boughtthe rightfor fromfilmax andtheywantedaremake
for the englishlanguage audience whichwasahuge successbecause people enjoyedthe filmand
some couldsay wentbackand watchedrec.
FinallyIwill have alookatotherproductionfactorswhoinfluence remakes.
These are political factors,soical factorsandregulatory
factors. Regulatoryfactorswill consistwithhow the
strict regulationsare withthe BBFCinclassifyingafilm
may shiftovertime.In1967, StanleyKubrickdirectedan
adaptationof Nabokov’sclassicnovel ‘Lolita,whichdue
to the subjectmatterwas highlycontroversial.However
a versiondirectedbyAdrianLyne in1997 was more
acceptedbysociety. Theyinfluencedthe filmin1997 usingregulatoryand
social factorswhenitsays “had majorissueswithcensorship”thiswould
influenceeventhoughitwasaproblemhe still wantedtorecreate what
original had.
Talkingmore aboutthat topicit says“On reflection, the directorstatedthatif
he had knownjusthowproblematicthe censorshipissueswere goingtobe he
wouldnothave made the film”so he wasn’tgoingto make itjustbecause of
the actual whathappeninthe filmwasveryhard to solve onthe otherhand it
thensays“his doesn’tnecessarilymeanthathe regrettedmakingthe film”you
couldsay that he thoughtthe filmcame out okeventhoughhe couldn’tfigure
out a way aroundthe problemhe had.Anotherexamplecouldbe thatthe
1997 versionwasable tocapture more emotiononsome of the characters
because mostof themwere nastytowardsthe main character andthe 1967
couldemphasisonitas much and exploringthatbecause of the lackof
resourcesof cinemain1967.
NextI’ll talkaboutthe political factorsviewingthe filmandremake of War
of the Worlds. The original wasreleasedin1953 where the remake later
debutedin2005 The original wasdirectedby ByronHaskin where then
laterdirectedforthe remake wasStevenSpielberg,Paramountwasthe
oneswhowere behindthe warof the worldsand same withthe remake
but SonyactuallyboughtparamountbutalsoDreamWorkswere involvedin
the remake as well. The 1953 adaptsof the H.G.Wells storytoldonradio of
the invasionof Earth byMartians. Where the remake wassimilarwhenit
was aboutwhen Earth isinvadedbyalientripodfightingmachines,one
familyfightsforsurvival. ForSpielberg’smovie the movie’sbudget were
around£86 millionandearnedaround£152 millionwhichisalotbeatingitsbudget.
Nowwe can talk aboutthe article aboutthe remake,he created the remake notjustto show of the
original andthe bookbut alsoa reference tothe aftermathof 9/11 and referstothe cold war when
theytriedto invade us.Thiswouldgetyouto watchit because ithas hisvisionof whathappenedthe
tragic daysbut in a more terrifyingwayusingalienstorepresentthe evil andthe humansasthe
civiliansthatdiedbecause of the attack.Youcouldsay all influencebyitforexample regulatorymay
not hada problemwithreferringtothe aftermathof 9/11 because of alotof people diedbutmore
were sufferingsobecause itrefersitmakespeople wanttowatchitand to relate eventhoughthey
can’t fully,thenyouhave the sociallyitbringsoutemotionthatcan’tbe expressedbywordsthat
whatmotionpicture doesitmovesyouemotionallysometimescausingthe viewertounderstand
whathas happenedmakingyoufeel sorryforwhatpeople of losteventhoughjustbywatchingthe
film.

Pr5 remakes and production factors which influnce them

  • 1. PR5: Remakesandproductionfactorswhichinfluence them I will talkaboutthe productionfactorsthat influence remakes.Forexample, remakesare createdfor a numberof reasoneitherforto promote merchandise tothe filmorevenforanartisticside because some of the original couldn’tcome totermsonthe visual theyneededbutbecause of technologyanditsevolutionproducerscancreate worldclosertothe comic or whateverthe storyis basedon.Whenthe firstremake came aroundthere were alot of remakesafterthat creatinga trendfor the filmindustriesitchangeshow itlooks. Thenthere have vertical andhorizontal integration, firstwe have vertical whichis the processinwhichseveral stepsinthe productionand distributionof aproductare controlledbyasingle company, inordertoincrease that company’s powerinthe marketplace. Thenwe have Horizontal whichis muchmore commonandsimplerthan vertical integration,Horizontal integrationsimplymeansastrategytoincrease yourmarketshare by takingovera similarcompany.Thisbuyoutcanbe done inthe same geographyor probablyinother countriestoincrease yourreach. So we will firsttalkaboutthe franchise Dreddsothat will be the Dreddin1995 andthe remake of thiswhichtookplace in 2012, as Dredd forthe original itwas SylvesterStallone andforthe remake it was Karl Urban, the directorof the original movie wasDannyCannonandforthe remake it wasPete Travis, thenthe productioncompanyforthese two movies, forthe original there are;HollywoodPictures and Cinergi Pictureswhere the remake hasmore with;IMGlobal,DNA FilmsandReliance Entertainment. Thenthere have how muchthey made, startingwiththe original againitearned, well itsbudgedwasaround £45.5 millionwhere the remake onlywasaround £32.5 millionthis was probablybecause in1994 theydidn’thave the right software inorderto geta betterlookmakingthem spendmore because of lackof software.Thenforthe movie itself onhowmuchitearnedforthe remake, onthe weekof release itmade £5,408,843.56 whichmeansitdidn’treachits budgetstraightawayina weekbutthe as time passedonitmade £26,673,519.08 whichmeansit didn’tgetas muchas the budget. Then there have the original whichmade around£16,667,556.85 on the weekof release anditgrossworldwide wasaround £73,754,538.76 so it almostdidtriple the remake made whichisstrange where itwouldexpectitbe the otherway around. The productioncompanyreleasedthe 1995 versionontoBlu-raywhenthe remake wasout incinemato getpeople towatchit and getfamiliarwiththe original. Iaskmyself whythe companieswouldneedtoremake afranchise like this,I’ve mentionedsome of the reasons but notmuch intodetailed.Forexample, the software in1995 wasn’tthe bestso theymostlyhadto relyon setsandreal life locationsbutforthe remake theydidn’thave torelyonit as muchbecause I watcheda behindthe sceneswhichshowshow theycreatedsome of theirlandscapesforexample theyusednormal shotsthat featuredsouthAfricawhichwaswhere theyshot andtheyusedCGIto add itcertainbuildingsthatweren’tactuallythere.Theycouldn’tdothatin1995 so from a visual pointof viewitlooksbetterthanthe remake because theyare able tocreate what theywanted withoutspendingloadsof moneyforsetswhentheycancreate theirownenvironmentsandcosts alotlessand looksbettervisually.Sotoanswermyquestionbefore youcansafelysaythatbecause bettertechnologyhasbeencreatedforfilmingbutformanyotherreasonsthattheydecidedtore-
  • 2. visitthe Judge Dredduniverse butitdidn’tjustbenefitthe remake butitalsomade people wantto findoutmore about it,like Isaidbefore theyreleasedthe 1995 versiononblu-raywhichwould make people wanttowatch the original.Ievenwatcheditafterwatchingthe remake Iwentto watch the original andthe difference isoutstandingyoucantell thatthe original wasn’tbestin visual butstill tookaspectsfromthe comic. The remake waskeyon visual effectswhenitcame to the story because itwasabout a drug that made youthinkyouwas seeingslowerthannormal speed,Iwatchedanotherbehindsthe sceneswhichshowedhow theycreatedthe scene they mentionedthattheyusedacameracalledphantomcamerawhichallowsthemtorecord at around 3000fps whennormallyyouwouldonlyshootat24fps whichisalotdifferencewhichishow they record, theydida trial before handtoshow whattheywantedand youcan see the resultsinthe film theyare amazingbecause itmakesitlookgraceful eventhoughit’sadrugthat causesit. The SFX usedmade the scenesmore beautiful towatchwhichmade the remake seemeverbetterbecauseof the use of technology.Thenanotheraspectyoucouldthinkaboutwhich wouldboostwhenyousee the remake itcomesdownto the synergywhere youhave merchandise suchast-shirts,posters, accessorieslotsmore. You’dexpecttosee alotof thisto sell outwhenthe filmwouldhave been releasedbecausefansof itwouldwant to buystuff referencingthe filmasarememberof the film plusyoucouldsay it wouldgetpeople toreadthe comicsbecause the comicshave more than the filmhasto offermore storyif you enjoyedthe storyside insteadof the visuals. Forexample, there is a site called 2000adcollectables,the difference thingsthatare like;t-shirts,mugs,phonecover, wallets, boardgames, comics, conceptart and figures there are manymore thingsalongthose lines. Here are couple of those thingsfromthe website: These are justa fewof whatI saw and like Isaidbefore aboutthe benefitsforthe remake onhow the filmwouldimpactonthe synergywell itwouldhelpthe merchandisesellmore because more people willgetinterestedintothe universe of charactersandwantto read more aboutit whichisa goodthingbecause thentheywouldknow thattheyhave a biggerfanbase because of all the merchandise boughtaroundthe world.
  • 3. Nextwe come to the secondpart of PR5 where we are goingto talkabout anotherfilmcalledRec and itsremake counterpartQuarantine theyare differentbecause Recwasa Spanishbasedfilm where Quarantine wasremade because notmany people enjoyedwatchingsubtitledfilm.First wouldbe Rec,was releasedin2007 directedby Jaume BalagueróandPaco Plazaand the producerswere;CarlosFernándezasexecutive producer,JulioFernándezalsoasexecutive producer/producer,thenthereisTeresaGefaellasthe line producerbutalso Oriol Maymó and finallythere isAlbertoMarini asco-executive producer. Whichbrings usto the cast, the main character wouldbe the reporterwhoisplayedby ManuelaVelasco the othercharactersthat are in the filmplayona role suchas there isa fireman, policemanandthere are afew characters that live inthe residents.Thenthe distributorswere CastelaoProducciones,Filmax,TelevisiónEspañola the one I recognisedwasFilmax whichlaterwasboughtbySonywhichiswhy we hadthe remake of Rec. Like I saidit wasoriginatedfromSpainanditis basedinSpaintoo.Thenthere isthe budgetandthe box office takingsIwill convertitintopoundslike IpresentedforDredd.Sothe budgetwasaround £1.2 millionwhichisquite smallafterall itwascreatedbya small productioncompanyinSpain, then there isthe box office, anditmade around £24 millionworldwide whichisquite goodbecausethat meant5% of whattheyearnedwastheirbudgetwhichisquite goodfora small independent company. Nextthere isQuarantine, directedbyJohnErickDowdle,ProducedbySergioAguero producer(asSergioAgüero) andDougDavisonwere the mainproducersbutyou hadthe executive producersfromrec for thismovie aswellsotheykeptedthemonmaybe tohave the same feel as theyusedonrec, thenyouhave the cast itwas prettythe same because mostof the storywas inspiredtorecso the characters were the same justwithamericanactors. For example, Jennifer Carpenterasthe reporterthenthere isSteve HarrisandJay Hernandezasthe nexttwomainactors. Andale Pictures,ScreenGems,VertigoEntertainment andlike Isaidthat sonyboughtoverthe rights for RecScreengemsare that companythat are associatedwitSony.ItoriginatedinUSA like i explainedbefore sothattheycouldgetfansto watch the remake because theydidn’twanttowatch the original because of itsspanishorgins.Budgetwasaround£7.8 Millionanditmade around£22 millionwhichmore thanitsbudgetbutitseemsasthoughRec made more and itwoulddo because I thinkQuarantine isjust anexact copyof Recjust made forthe englishspeakingsociety. Youcould say that the directorfeltlike itwouldbe dissorningif theyjustchangedthe whole movie and changeditentilingsoitbe differnettoRecbutit doesstickby it,so roughlythe difference wouldjust be that the technologywouldbe differentbecause Filmax ondistrubedtothe filminorderforitto be made, thenwhensonyboughtthe filmrighttheywere thenable todistrubtedconstribute and produce mostof it,causingthe visual be alotbetterthanthe original because of asmallerbudget but thenalsothe cast were differentbutsome still lookedverysimiliartothe previousroles. Then thinkaboutwhytheymade a remake of itfor the englishlanguage audiences, itisvery simplyandI saidbefore people don’twanttowatch subtitledfilm, if youcreate anamericanmoneyboththe previousfilmwouldmake moneybecause itwouldbe usedsome the aspectsof the filmsbutalso the filmitself wouldmake alotof moneybecause more thanjustthe audience itpreviouslyhad wouldwatchthe remake because of itssimilariteswithrec.Thenyouhave the interview withthe director of Rec,the reasonwhytheydecidedtogo for the documentaryfeel wasbecause they
  • 4. wantedtheiraudience rightupinthe actionmakingthemfeel asthoughthe personbehindthe camera iseach personwhoiswatchingthe filmmakingitfeel real andmakesthe whole situation alotworse worksgreat inhorror movies.Forrec’scompetitionin2007 was cloverfield anddiaryof the deadand the directerwasaskedwas youconcernedaboutthese,he saidthatthe filmwas alreadymade before these filmshadanyinformationregradingplottothe storysohe seemed confidentenoughandnotafriadof the competition.Itmentionsthatthe rightwere boughtby anothercompanythiswas screengems, these were asmallercompanythe real companywassony and wastoldfrom sonytheywill produce Quarantine tothe englishlanguageaudience. Theywanted to getit out as soonas possible sothatthe audience wasn’tthinkingthatitwasdisrespectfuland people whowouldhave wantedtosee the filminenglishwouldgetachance whenthe filmcame out a yearlater. I’ll have a lookat the filmcarrie and whyitwas remade,The original wasreleasedin1976 andthe remake wasin2013, the directorfor the original was BrianDe Palmaand forthe remake itwas KimberlyPeirce andplayingasCarrie the maincharacter wasfor the original was SissySpacek thenlaterforthe remake Chloë Grace Moretz as the role the reasonwas because she was a huge star due to herpreviousrolessuchasKick- Assmakingherright forthe role butit made the movie more popularfor people wholikedseeingherin previousfilms.Whentalkingaboutspecial effectsyou couldsay itwas similartoDreddbecause backin 1976 theydidn’thave the software thatwe have today whichiswhythe remake wasa lotbettertheyeven promotedthe filmbecause there wasavideoonyoutube anditviewedafew actorsina café and whencustomerscame intheywouldgetintoargumentsthencausingthemtouse a teleknislike powerfreakingthe customersout, whenitwasall overitthenrevealsthatitis a promotionforthe newfilmcarrie. So because of the newtechnology the productioncompaniesprocessbecause easierwaythanusing setsor props thatwouldbe messysuchas blood.NextI’ll talkaboutthe Horizantal intergration, the example I’ll use are these films; The Karate Kid,Annie and AboutLast Night. All the orignal versionsof the filmsso like; The Karate Kid(1984) was producedbycolumbia pictures,Annie (1982) wasalso createdbycolumbia picturesandfinally youhave aboutlastnight(1986) was alsocolumbia.Ichoose these filmsbecauseColumbiawas thenboughtin1989 whichthentheycreatedthe remakes in;The Karate Kid(2010),Annie(2014) and finallyAboutLastNight(2014) thentheyrecreate the films withnewertechnologyandbringingbackforsynergy purposissuchas release of blu-rayforthe original film.So overall these wouldjustbe afewof the examples, there wouldbe loadsanotherexamplethere isDisneybuyingright frommarvel whichwouldbe a type of Vertical intergration the same withsonyand 20th centuryfox but justrecently
  • 5. sonyhas sold theirrightfor the spidermanfranchisetoDisneybuttheystill have asayin some soit wouldclassas some sortof Vertical Intergrationanditsbenefactial because Disneyproduce the avengerswhichcame outgreat andwhentheyremade spidermanitwasn’tasgoodas the firsttwo featuringTobyMcguire. Nextthe thingsthatinfluncedthe remke of rec.Forexample there is;Finical factors,Trends,Genre and popularity, synergyandvertical intergration.Firstletstalkaboutfinaical factorsthiswouldbe goodfor bothFilmax andscreengems(sony) theywillbothgetthe moneyonthe remake soit would influencebecause itwillbe makingmore moneyandif sobe able to create sequelsforthe films whichtheydida fewyearsafter, thenyouhave trends, genre andpopularity.Youcansee that rec didreallywell bymaknigalotof moneysoitwouldhave influencedthe remakebecause thereare more people willingtowatchit inenglishbecause theycanrelate tothatmore becuase of james’s visiononwhyhe createdrec so that youcouldfeel asthoughyouwas apart of the filmpluspeople enjoyhorrorfilmsandpeople liketolookforthingstheyhaven’tseenif theyhaven’tseenrecfirstof course. You couldsay whentalknigaboutsynergythattheycreatedthe filmcausedpeople togo watch the original movie makingthemtogetmoneyfrompeople watchingthe remake butaswell as the original film.Vertical intergrationhadalotto do withitjustbecasue that sonyownedthe companyscreengemswhichthenthey boughtthe rightfor fromfilmax andtheywantedaremake for the englishlanguage audience whichwasahuge successbecause people enjoyedthe filmand some couldsay wentbackand watchedrec. FinallyIwill have alookatotherproductionfactorswhoinfluence remakes. These are political factors, soical factorsandregulatory factors. Regulatoryfactorswill consistwithhow the strict regulationsare withthe BBFCinclassifyingafilm may shiftovertime.In1967, StanleyKubrickdirectedan adaptationof Nabokov’sclassicnovel ‘Lolita, whichdue to the subjectmatterwas highlycontroversial. However a versiondirectedbyAdrianLyne in1997 was more acceptedbysociety. Theyinfluencedthe filmin1997 usingregulatoryand social factorswhenitsays “had majorissueswithcensorship”thiswould influenceeventhoughitwasaproblemhe still wantedtorecreate what original had. Talkingmore aboutthat topicit says“On reflection, the directorstatedthatif he had knownjusthowproblematicthe censorshipissueswere goingtobe he wouldnothave made the film”so he wasn’tgoingto make itjustbecause of the actual whathappeninthe filmwasveryhard to solve onthe otherhand it thensays“his doesn’tnecessarilymeanthathe regrettedmakingthe film”you couldsay that he thoughtthe filmcame out okeventhoughhe couldn’tfigure out a way aroundthe problemhe had.Anotherexamplecouldbe thatthe 1997 versionwasable tocapture more emotiononsome of the characters because mostof themwere nastytowardsthe main character andthe 1967 couldemphasisonitas much and exploringthatbecause of the lackof resourcesof cinemain1967.
  • 6. NextI’ll talkaboutthe political factorsviewingthe filmandremake of War of the Worlds. The original wasreleasedin1953 where the remake later debutedin2005 The original wasdirectedby ByronHaskin where then laterdirectedforthe remake wasStevenSpielberg,Paramountwasthe oneswhowere behindthe warof the worldsand same withthe remake but SonyactuallyboughtparamountbutalsoDreamWorkswere involvedin the remake as well. The 1953 adaptsof the H.G.Wells storytoldonradio of the invasionof Earth byMartians. Where the remake wassimilarwhenit was aboutwhen Earth isinvadedbyalientripodfightingmachines, one familyfightsforsurvival. ForSpielberg’smovie the movie’sbudget were around£86 millionandearnedaround£152 millionwhichisalotbeatingitsbudget. Nowwe can talk aboutthe article aboutthe remake,he created the remake notjustto show of the original andthe bookbut alsoa reference tothe aftermathof 9/11 and referstothe cold war when theytriedto invade us.Thiswouldgetyouto watchit because ithas hisvisionof whathappenedthe tragic daysbut in a more terrifyingwayusingalienstorepresentthe evil andthe humansasthe civiliansthatdiedbecause of the attack.Youcouldsay all influencebyitforexample regulatorymay not hada problemwithreferringtothe aftermathof 9/11 because of alotof people diedbutmore were sufferingsobecause itrefersitmakespeople wanttowatchitand to relate eventhoughthey can’t fully, thenyouhave the sociallyitbringsoutemotionthatcan’tbe expressedbywordsthat whatmotionpicture doesitmovesyouemotionallysometimescausingthe viewertounderstand whathas happenedmakingyoufeel sorryforwhatpeople of losteventhoughjustbywatchingthe film.
