What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this film?Garage Band Software – I thought that although it was basic, there were plenty of loops and instruments that I was able to use and I was able to create the sounds that I wanted to. A tripod – I found this very useful whilst filming. It held the camera firm and secure and I was able to pick it up and move it around without too much hassle.A Flip video camera – I found this camera very easy to operate because it was very basic, this was because there were only a few buttons. I found the camera to be a little bit smaller than I would have liked, however it made it easier to move around. I found the quality from the camera average, and the display was too small to see.An Apple Mac Computer – Once I got the hang of how it worked I really liked the layout of the computer. It was quick and I was able to use the software I wanted.   Imovie Software – I thought this software was excellent. It was very easy to use and I felt comfortable and confident using it.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full productI feel that since the preliminary task I have learnt a lot more about aspects of camera techniques and editing techniques. I think that I have developed a greater understanding and gained a lot more confidence with the editing on the computer. I am now able to make the scene flow a lot smoother and I am able to make quick edits when necessary, to build tension.  I have also learnt a lot more about camera angles and techniques. For example the 180 degree rule, (as pictured below) which means the character must enter the same side that he left from. I have also learnt a lot more about match on action and shot/reverse shot. I have also pictured and labelled a few shots from my film opening.180 degree rule (Preliminary)Point of view shot (film opening)Reaction Shot (film opening)
What would be the audience for your media product? AGEThe target audience for “Welcome Home” is anyone that enjoys horror thrillers. The age group for this category ranges quite a bit. However a typical age would probably be from around 15 – 20. A typical target audience personTo depict a typical target audience member, they would probably be in education and around the age of 16.This would mean that they could relate to the main character. They would enjoy a few of the films shown on the left and really enjoy the thriller/horror genre.Typical films in our categoryHere are a few films that we feel are target audience would be suited to. Paranormal Activity·       Disturbia·       Blair Witch Project·       The Omen·       The Calling·       Seven·       PsychoTV programmes they would enjoyFamily GuySkins Various Soups24Waking The Dead
How did you attract your target audience? We planned lots about how we could attract our target audience – as this was one of our main criteria. To attract our target audience we thought about these areas: ·       The Music – We tried to make the music sound reasonably modern, as this would attract our teenage audience. We did this by using synthesisers and guitar riffs (fairly modern instruments).·       The character – We tried to get our main character to reflect our target audience. Therefore we made him male and about 16 – 18 years of age and showed him as typical, as his routine is normal and he is wearing normal, casual clothes. Which shows similarities to "Disturbia", a film that inspired us.·       The house – We chose to film in a typically modern house. This made the character slightly “cooler” and this made the audience like him. Which again was inspired by "Disturbia“·       The school – We chose to add this in, again to show that he was normal – as he goes to school like everyone else. We think that the technique that we used with the flash forward makes our film unique from other thriller/horror films. As it shows the viewer what is will eventually happen, but it doesn't show when or how or why.
Representation Of Social GroupsSimilarities ·         Both characters are of the same age.·         They both are in danger.·         They both have a stranger in their house.·         They both wear casual clothes.·         They both have short hair.·         They both are the protagonists. ·         They both have the same amount of screen time.·         They both go about their daily routine.Differences·         Has friends with him. (Disturbia)·         We see his family.(Disturbia)·         He speaks more.(Disturbia)·         We see his relationships with other characters. (Disturbia)
Distribution of Our FilmProduction companies such as 20th Century Fox and Working Title inspired our logo design and helped us decide what we wanted our production company to stand for. With our logo we chose to keep it basic but to try and incorporate writing with it, to make it clearer. Which can be seen with many other companies. We also chose to introduce our logo at the beginning of the film. This is a technique used by many companies, so that the viewer know who made the film and this also helps with developing the companies name.I think that Working Title would be a great company to distribute our film. This is because they are British and do not use special effects and modern technology like that. They rely on a good cast and script and trust their camera skills. Therefore their films our low budget - like ours.
In what ways does my media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products? This tracking shot is also very typical with horror films. It helps the audience track the characters movements and it gives the feeling that he is being watched. This shot is reasonably typical, as it shows the character walking away from the camera. This medium shot is used in many horror films as it conveys a good idea as to what is going in the scene. The reaction shot is probably the most typical shot in this genre. It allows the view to see how the character is feeling as we can see here. The point of view shot is very typical in horror films. It shows that the character is being watched and this sets the tone of the film.
In what ways does my media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products? (continued)This shot is fairly untypical. As you can see the characters face is blocked by the light. This produces a creepy feeling - as we can not see his reaction to what is up there. This shot with the titles is fairly common in horror films, as it separates the future and the present really clearly. The titles we used are very bare, which is fairly untypical of films of this genre. We wanted to make the audience jump and to show the transaction between the future and the present.Showing the production company before the film is also very typical of films of this genre. The music often starts as the logo is shown - to build tension.
Feedback from our filmFeedback from our filmThe feedback that we received was mainly positive. We showed our film to our target audience and most of them really enjoyed it. The comments we received were that they really liked the flash forward effect, as this showed a different angle on the typical horror film. Also they found that the shots that we used were effective and that the greyscale colour created a good atmosphere. We did however receive some constructive criticism which was the film could be a little bit slow moving, which we understood and took onboard. The reason why it was maybe a little slow moving was because we wanted it to be clear – as to what is happening and also to try and build tension. These comments will be very useful for future reference.
