Teachers (Webinar on Research)
Shown a deeper understanding of the what, why and how of Action
Research;
Familiarized with some innovations, interventions and strategies in
doing Action Research especially in this New Normal set-up of
education; and
Identified a possible AR topic to work on for a proposal.
LECTURE OUTCOMES
ACTION RESEARCH (AR)
 a process in which
participants examine their
own educational practice,
systematically and
carefully, using the
techniques of research.
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
 consists of
PURPOSIVE and
DELIBERATE ACTION
aimed at SEEKING
SOLUTIONS
(INNOVATIONS/
TRENDS) to practical
and on-going
problems (ISSUES).
ACTION RESEARCH (AR)
 systematic inquiry
 done by teachers (or other individuals in an
educational setting)
 to gather information about, and
 subsequently improve, the ways their
particular educational setting operates, how
they teach, and how well their students learn
….Mills, 2000).

AR in Simple Terms
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
1. The teacher thinks, “I wonder what would
happen if I tried X instead of Y.
2. Then she plans a systematic program for
implementing X and comparing the outcomes
relative to Y.
3. She then implements her program, evaluates the
outcomes, and reports it.
WHY DO ACTION RESEARCH?
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
GOALS:
1) SOLVE an existing problem in school, or in the class
the teacher teaches.
2) OBTAIN knowledge which can be applied directly to
the local classroom situation,
3) GIVE the participating teacher an opportunity to
grow professionally (Hence; AR is a form of IN-
SERVICE training for teachers)
WHY DO ACTION RESEARCH?
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
•In SCHOOL CONTEXT, AR has these purposes:
A)Seek solutions to practical problems/ school-
wide problems
B) Improve teaching and learning process /help
teachers reflect on their own practices.
C) Provide IN-SERVICE training to teachers
WHY DO ACTION RESEARCH?
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
As In-Service Training;
AR gives educators new opportunities to
reflect on and assess their teaching;
To explore and test new ideas, methods, and
materials;
To assess how effective the new approaches
are in solving a problem at hand;
WHY DO ACTION RESEARCH?
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
To share feedback with fellow team
members;
To make decisions about which new
approaches to include in the practice.
ACTION RESEARCH DESIGNS
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
Action Research
Participatory
Practical
•Studying local practices
Involving individual or team-
based inquiry
•Focusing on teacher development and
student learning
•Implementing a plan of action
•Leading to the teacher-as-researcher
•Studying social issues
that constrain individual lives
•Emphasizing equal
collaboration
•Focusing on “life-enhancing
changes”
•Resulting in the emancipated
researcher

ACTIVITY 1 (LOOK)
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
1. What are the current problems I have in my
class/school?
2. Are there new innovations in education (i.e.
new strategies in teaching) which I would like
to try if it is effective in my class/school?
ACTIVITY 2 (THINK)
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
1. Which among the problems I listed in Activity 1
need/s immediate solution?
2. What problem/s in Activity can I possibly solve now?
(Consider availability of materials and finance)
3. Which educational innovation do I want to try in my
class/school?
4. What can possibly be my research questions? My
variables?
ACTIVITY 3 (ACT)
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
1. How can I solve the problem/s I selected in
Activity 2?
2. How can I test the effectiveness of the
innovation I singled out in Activity 1 & 2?
3. What are my possible sources of data?
4. How will I possibly conduct my research?
NEW NORMAL INNOVATIONS IN AR
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful

Teachers (Webinar on Research)
INNOVATION
A new IDEA, METHOD or DEVICE
The introduction of something NEW
STEPS IN CONSIDERING AN INNOVATION
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
• Ask “Does it
exist already?”
Step 1
• If it does not
exist, why not?
Step 2
• What is its
perceived
market/
significance?
Step 3

NEW NORMAL INTERVENTIONS IN AR
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
INTERVENTION
Action taken to improve a situation
In Education, most common are INSTRUCTIONAL
INTERVENTION
Intentional (w/ target, problem, situation to solve)
Specific (how long?)
Formalized (carefully planned/ monitoring is set)
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
INTERVENTION vs. STRATEGY
STRATEGY – Set of methods or activities to teach
learners a skill or concept (Oxford Dictionary)
Notes:
An Instructional Intervention is not just a Strategy
An Instructional Intervention may include Strategies
But not all Strategies are Intervention
EXAMPLES
Liwliwa is in Grade 1. She lacks basic Math
skills and cannot recognize numbers from 1
to 10. But he hasn’t been evaluated for
special education. Her school schedules an
hour of small group instruction each day to
help her catch up. Every week, the teacher
checks on her progress.

Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
Ricardo is in Grade 5 and has dyslexia. He has
trouble with decoding and phonological
awareness. The research team in his school
decides to provide 30 minutes of multisensory
reading instruction three times a week. Every
month, his reading progress is monitored.
POSSIBLE
ISSUES IN
MODULAR
LEARNING
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
1.Self-Discipline and self-motivation of
learners
2. Preparation time for modules
3. Feedback system
4. Administrative resources needed to
track students
5.Pressure (for students) to get good
grades
6.Teachers’ workload and attitude
towards module-based instruction
7.Learner’s or parent’s grade?
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
POSSIBLE
ISSUES IN
ONLINE
LEARNING
(TEACHERS)
1.Preparation time for IMs/modules to be
uploaded
2. Feedback/Assessment System
3. Administrative resources needed to
track students
4.Pressure (for students) to get good
grades
5.Teachers’ workload and attitude towards
online-based instruction
6.Teachers readiness (knowledge & skills)
Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful
Grant Proposals for Basic Education
Teachers (Webinar on Research)
POSSIBLE
ISSUES IN
ONLINE
LEARNING
(STUDENTS)
1.Divided attention of students
 classes vs. mobile gadgets
 classes vs. play
 classes vs. work time &
responsibility (home & labor)
2. Pressure (for students) to get good
grades.
3. Bulk of work to do/ outputs with
deadlines (at or almost the same time)
4. Parents’/Stakeholders’ extent of
participation in the learner’s output
We as teachers should
innovate to teach online
by tapping legitimate
online tools and
resources. By using
online learning
resources on topics and
creating learning
playlists or menus,
students would be up for
an exciting learning
process.

Flipgrid is a video
discussion tool quite
like no other as it's
designed with the
might of Microsoft to
work specifically for
teachers and students
in a digital classroom.

Flipgrid is a video tool that allows teachers
to post "Topics" that are essentially videos
with some accompanying text. This is then
shared with students, who can be
prompted to respond.
The response can be made using the
software's camera to create videos that are
then posted to the original Topic. These
videos can be recorded as many times as
needed before uploading, and can have the
addition of emoji, text, stickers, drawings,
or custom stickers.

LECTURE OUTCOMES
  • 4. ACTION RESEARCH (AR)  a process in which participants examine their own educational practice, systematically and carefully, using the techniques of research. Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful Grant Proposals for Basic Education Teachers (Webinar on Research)  consists of PURPOSIVE and DELIBERATE ACTION aimed at SEEKING SOLUTIONS (INNOVATIONS/ TRENDS) to practical and on-going problems (ISSUES).
  • 5. ACTION RESEARCH (AR)  systematic inquiry  done by teachers (or other individuals in an educational setting)  to gather information about, and  subsequently improve, the ways their particular educational setting operates, how they teach, and how well their students learn ….Mills, 2000). Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful Grant Proposals for Basic Education Teachers (Webinar on Research)
  • 6. AR in Simple Terms Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful Grant Proposals for Basic Education Teachers (Webinar on Research) 1. The teacher thinks, “I wonder what would happen if I tried X instead of Y. 2. Then she plans a systematic program for implementing X and comparing the outcomes relative to Y. 3. She then implements her program, evaluates the outcomes, and reports it.
  • 7. WHY DO ACTION RESEARCH? Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful Grant Proposals for Basic Education Teachers (Webinar on Research) GOALS: 1) SOLVE an existing problem in school, or in the class the teacher teaches. 2) OBTAIN knowledge which can be applied directly to the local classroom situation, 3) GIVE the participating teacher an opportunity to grow professionally (Hence; AR is a form of IN- SERVICE training for teachers)
  • 8. WHY DO ACTION RESEARCH? Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful Grant Proposals for Basic Education Teachers (Webinar on Research) •In SCHOOL CONTEXT, AR has these purposes: A)Seek solutions to practical problems/ school- wide problems B) Improve teaching and learning process /help teachers reflect on their own practices. C) Provide IN-SERVICE training to teachers
  • 9. WHY DO ACTION RESEARCH? Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful Grant Proposals for Basic Education Teachers (Webinar on Research) As In-Service Training; AR gives educators new opportunities to reflect on and assess their teaching; To explore and test new ideas, methods, and materials; To assess how effective the new approaches are in solving a problem at hand;
  • 10. WHY DO ACTION RESEARCH? Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful Grant Proposals for Basic Education Teachers (Webinar on Research) To share feedback with fellow team members; To make decisions about which new approaches to include in the practice.
  • 11. ACTION RESEARCH DESIGNS Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful Grant Proposals for Basic Education Teachers (Webinar on Research) Action Research Participatory Practical •Studying local practices Involving individual or team- based inquiry •Focusing on teacher development and student learning •Implementing a plan of action •Leading to the teacher-as-researcher •Studying social issues that constrain individual lives •Emphasizing equal collaboration •Focusing on “life-enhancing changes” •Resulting in the emancipated researcher
  • 12. HOW DO WE DO ACTION RESEARCH? (Design 1) Webinar-Writeshop on Crafting Successful Grant Proposals for Basic Education Teachers (Webinar on Research) Practical action research: The Research Spiral (Mills, 2000) Analyze and Interpret Data Develop an Action Plan Collect Data Identify an Area of Focus
