and on-going
problems (ISSUES).

ACTION RESEARCH (AR)
 systematic inquiry
 done by teachers (or other individuals in an
educational setting)
 to gather information about, and
 subsequently improve, the ways their
particular educational setting operates, how
they teach, and how well their students learn
….Mills, 2000).

AR in Simple Terms
1. The teacher thinks, “I wonder what would
happen if I tried X instead of Y.
2. Then she plans a systematic program for
implementing X and comparing the outcomes
relative to Y.
3. She then implements her program, evaluates the
outcomes, and reports it.

WHY DO ACTION RESEARCH?
GOALS:
1) SOLVE an existing problem in school, or in the class
the teacher teaches.
2) OBTAIN knowledge which can be applied directly to
the local classroom situation,
3) GIVE the participating teacher an opportunity to
grow professionally (Hence; AR is a form of IN-
SERVICE training for teachers)

•In SCHOOL CONTEXT, AR has these purposes:
A)Seek solutions to practical problems/ school-
wide problems
B) Improve teaching and learning process /help
teachers reflect on their own practices.
C) Provide IN-SERVICE training to teachers

As In-Service Training;
AR gives educators new opportunities to
reflect on and assess their teaching;
To explore and test new ideas, methods, and
materials;
To assess how effective the new approaches
are in solving a problem at hand;

To share feedback with fellow team
members;
To make decisions about which new
approaches to include in the practice.

STRATEGY – Set of methods or activities to teach
learners a skill or concept (Oxford Dictionary)
Notes:
An Instructional Intervention is not just a Strategy
An Instructional Intervention may include Strategies
But not all Strategies are Intervention

EXAMPLES
Liwliwa is in Grade 1. She lacks basic Math
skills and cannot recognize numbers from 1
to 10. But he hasn’t been evaluated for
special education. Her school schedules an
hour of small group instruction each day to
help her catch up. Every week, the teacher
checks on her progress.

EXAMPLES
Ricardo is in Grade 5 and has dyslexia. He has
trouble with decoding and phonological
awareness. The research team in his school
decides to provide 30 minutes of multisensory
reading instruction three times a week. Every
month, his reading progress is monitored.

Flipgrid is a video
discussion tool quite
like no other as it's
designed with the
might of Microsoft to
work specifically for
teachers and students
in a digital classroom.
INTERVENTION EXAMPLES

Flipgrid is a video tool that allows teachers
to post "Topics" that are essentially videos
with some accompanying text. This is then
shared with students, who can be
prompted to respond.
The response can be made using the
software's camera to create videos that are
then posted to the original Topic. These
videos can be recorded as many times as
needed before uploading, and can have the
addition of emoji, text, stickers, drawings,
or custom stickers.

 Quipper is an Education
Technology company that
provides e-Learning,
coaching, tutoring, and
assessment services for K-
12 in Japan, Indonesia,
the Philippines,
and Mexico.

The company's primary service
is an online learning
management system (LMS),
which is used in different ways in
