The digestive system is made up of 11 organs that work together to break down food and extract nutrients and energy. It begins with the mouth, which chews food and sends it through the esophagus to the stomach. The stomach further breaks food down through digestion before passing it to the small intestine, where nutrients are absorbed. Waste then travels to the large intestine, where water is removed before passing through the rectum and anus. Glands like the liver, gallbladder and pancreas produce bile and enzymes to aid in digestion.
