Alimentary Canal Digestive System
The continuous tube by which food
travels along the body is known as
the alimentary canal.
The digestive system is a group of
organs that work together to break
down and absorb nutrients.

3. In the mouth…
• The process of digestion begins.
• Food is chewed.
• The teeth breaks up food into smaller chunks. This is an example of
physical digestion.
• It is mixed with saliva from the salivary glands which contains amylase
to break down starch.

4. Down the esophagus…
• Small chunks of food are moved down
from the mouth to the stomach.
• By the contraction and relaxation of the
muscles that make up esophagus.
• The involuntary wave-like movement by
which food is moved along the
alimentary canal is known as peristalsis.

5. In the stomach…
• Food is mixed with gastric juice made up of enzyme
proteases, hydrochloric acid, water and other digestive
enzymes.
• Proteins produce by the body to speed up digestion
are known as digestive enzymes.
• Proteases breaks down long chains of proteins into
shorter chains of proteins.
• The hydrochloric acid activates proteases and kills
unwanted bacteria in the food.
• Muscular contractions (peristalsis) churns food.
• Food becomes a semi-liquid mass called chyme.

6. In the small intestine…
• Bile produced in the liver and stored in the gall
bladder is squirted onto the food which breaks
down large fat droplets into small fat droplets.
• Digestive juices from the liver and pancreas
containing enzymes break down food further.
• These then pass from the intestinal wall to the
blood.
• The final products of digestion are glycerol, fatty
acids, amino acids and glucose through the villi.
• Undigested food squeezes into the large intestine.
• Digestion ends here.

7. In the large intestine and down the rectum…
• Water and minerals are absorbed from the undigested
food.
• The remaining undigested food moves to the rectum.
• It is stored as faeces and is removed through ring like
muscles called anus. This process is called egestion or
defecation.
