MIXED ABILITIES CLASSES
It´s vey important to be aware of what mix ability classes are, and how and how often they
affect an English class. When teaching any other subject, let say Math on fifth grade, for
example, the level of knowledge that students have a very close, probably some are better than
others, but more or less, everyone will be able to perform the same tasks, but English is a
different reality, since the schools around the country, and even in the same city, don´t have the
same curriculum, not to say the same level. Under these circumstances very often English
teachers have to deal with mixability classes, which become a real challenge especially for
young unexperienced teachers. The main points that we should have into consideration are
content, because we have to be able to handle almost the same content but with different
difficulty degrees, motivation is another factor to take in consideration, we can´t allow the
students with lower level to feel frustration and lost interest in the subject, it´s necessary to
use the right strategies to keep them going at similar pace than the more advance students.
Language production is something that we must try harder with a mix ability class, since not
everyone will be able to speak or write on the same level. Never mind, leaving aside all these
challenges I think that teaching mix ability classes make English teachers especial teachers.
MIXED ABILITIES CLASSES
Mixed abilities classes is a
great challenge for the
teachers because the
students are grouped
according to the level of
language, in any class, it is
a group of mixed level.

COGNITIVE ABILITY
LEARNING STYLES
THERE ARE SPECIFIC PROBLEMS THAT THE TEACHERS HAVER WITH MIXED
ABILITIES GROUPS
The learning of the students is very
important, make sure that with the
activities all learn
meet the different needs of students
It is very important to choose the
right material
cater for different interests
reach students with different learning styles
pace to use" too fast, too slow.
AS WELL AS THERE ARE DISADVANTAGES, THERE ARE ALSO
ADVANTAGES WITH MIXED ABILITIES CLASSES SUCH AS:
such educational principles as
tolerance, respect and
cooperation can be developed.
Mixed abilities can even make a
teacher improve their teaching
and different learning styles
When the teacher cannot reach every
single individual, he or she can have the
learners teach one another, taking
advantage of the diversity in the group
A KEEPING THEM MOTIVATED
VARIATION
Teachers should vary their
teaching to achieve an
optimum level in their group
Teacher can teach all of the
learners some of the time, some
of the learners all of the time
but not all of the learners all of
the time.
LEVEL
PACE
CLASSROOM
ORGANIZATION
DEMANDS ON THE
LEARNERS
AMOUNT
Some students learn best on their own, others
really like working in groups. Some students
prefer to learn from the teacher. Some
learners are more visual others more aural
some are more productive, while others prefer
to listen or read more reflectively.
INTEREST
Teachers should ensure
that all students feel
interested in one or
another way.
Game-like features.
Visual materials.
Maximum participation.
Any game has rules which stop you
achieving success too easily. This
presents participants with a challenge,
and this challenge can increase their
interest considerably.
If the visual aid is something fun like a
video, etc. increases the interest of a
collaborative work.
This is the key to effective
teaching and learning.
Everybody should be involved
at the same time, rather than
having a series of interactions
between the teacher and
students.
Game-like features.
Visual materials.
COLLABORATION
Learners work together in order to get a better result than
they would on their own.
All activities based on reaction or
brainstorming can also be
collaboration in the mixed-level
classroom
There are also disadvantages because sometimes
students prefer to work on their own and can not
do much because there are students who prefer
to work alone and not in a group, it also depends
a lot on the motivation that the teacher has
INDIVIDUALIZATION:
The teacher must allow
variations according to the
level and speed, even the
exercise must be guided by
the teacher or established
Different starting points.
Giving a time limit rather than a quantity-
of-word limit.
Allowing self-checking and only
asking the teacher when there is a
problem
Learners choose where to start.
Giving an instruction like Do
as much as you can in five
minutes
This allows students to
take more responsibility
for their learning and to
work at their own pace.
PERSONALIZATION
Learners express their
own opinions, thoughts
and desires.
Learners relate to
their own individual
experiences
Share your taste, your
thoughts, their criteria is
a very important part for
learners
It is very
illuminating to hear
other people´s
ideas about a
language class
OPEN ENDING.
Provide students with
open-ended exercises
and activities. An
open-ended item has
many right answers, so
learners can respond
at different levels.
A closed-ended
exercise is
homogeneous.
Apart from the fact that this can be
done without understanding, it is
inappropriate for a heterogeneous
class.
COMPULSORY PLUS OPTIONAL
Giving classes a personalized
form is a way to give
students more than what is
required
Give activities that are
sufficiently easy for all
students to do all or
almost
Every group is heterogeneous, and
we must take this into account.
After listening to the audios of my peers, I think it is very important
to know about the mixed abilities classes and to apply them in each of
the classes, so that the students can improve their learning, each
detail is a small part of what we should do constantly in each of the
activities or lessons. penny gives us good tips to be able to pray them
and follow the real procedure, this could be quite the most easy and
effective class

Power point presentation advanced listening forum 2

  • 1. ADVANCED LISTENING TEACHER: MSC.MARICELA MADRID STUDENT: VERÓNICA MORENO
  • 2. MIXED ABILITIES CLASSES It´s vey important to be aware of what mix ability classes are, and how and how often they affect an English class. When teaching any other subject, let say Math on fifth grade, for example, the level of knowledge that students have a very close, probably some are better than others, but more or less, everyone will be able to perform the same tasks, but English is a different reality, since the schools around the country, and even in the same city, don´t have the same curriculum, not to say the same level. Under these circumstances very often English teachers have to deal with mixability classes, which become a real challenge especially for young unexperienced teachers. The main points that we should have into consideration are content, because we have to be able to handle almost the same content but with different difficulty degrees, motivation is another factor to take in consideration, we can´t allow the students with lower level to feel frustration and lost interest in the subject, it´s necessary to use the right strategies to keep them going at similar pace than the more advance students. Language production is something that we must try harder with a mix ability class, since not everyone will be able to speak or write on the same level. Never mind, leaving aside all these challenges I think that teaching mix ability classes make English teachers especial teachers.
  • 3. MIXED ABILITIES CLASSES Mixed abilities classes is a great challenge for the teachers because the students are grouped according to the level of language, in any class, it is a group of mixed level. BACKGROUNDINTERESTS AGE GENDER PERSONALITY MOTIVATION COGNITIVE ABILITY LEARNING STYLES
  • 4. THERE ARE SPECIFIC PROBLEMS THAT THE TEACHERS HAVER WITH MIXED ABILITIES GROUPS The learning of the students is very important, make sure that with the activities all learn meet the different needs of students It is very important to choose the right material cater for different interests reach students with different learning styles pace to use" too fast, too slow.
  • 5. AS WELL AS THERE ARE DISADVANTAGES, THERE ARE ALSO ADVANTAGES WITH MIXED ABILITIES CLASSES SUCH AS: such educational principles as tolerance, respect and cooperation can be developed. Mixed abilities can even make a teacher improve their teaching and different learning styles When the teacher cannot reach every single individual, he or she can have the learners teach one another, taking advantage of the diversity in the group
  • 6. A KEEPING THEM MOTIVATED VARIATION Teachers should vary their teaching to achieve an optimum level in their group Teacher can teach all of the learners some of the time, some of the learners all of the time but not all of the learners all of the time. LEVEL PACE CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION DEMANDS ON THE LEARNERS AMOUNT Some students learn best on their own, others really like working in groups. Some students prefer to learn from the teacher. Some learners are more visual others more aural some are more productive, while others prefer to listen or read more reflectively.
  • 7. INTEREST Teachers should ensure that all students feel interested in one or another way. Game-like features. Visual materials. Maximum participation. Any game has rules which stop you achieving success too easily. This presents participants with a challenge, and this challenge can increase their interest considerably. If the visual aid is something fun like a video, etc. increases the interest of a collaborative work. This is the key to effective teaching and learning. Everybody should be involved at the same time, rather than having a series of interactions between the teacher and students. Game-like features. Visual materials.
  • 8. COLLABORATION Learners work together in order to get a better result than they would on their own. All activities based on reaction or brainstorming can also be collaboration in the mixed-level classroom There are also disadvantages because sometimes students prefer to work on their own and can not do much because there are students who prefer to work alone and not in a group, it also depends a lot on the motivation that the teacher has
  • 9. INDIVIDUALIZATION: The teacher must allow variations according to the level and speed, even the exercise must be guided by the teacher or established Different starting points. Giving a time limit rather than a quantity- of-word limit. Allowing self-checking and only asking the teacher when there is a problem Learners choose where to start. Giving an instruction like Do as much as you can in five minutes This allows students to take more responsibility for their learning and to work at their own pace.
  • 10. PERSONALIZATION Learners express their own opinions, thoughts and desires. Learners relate to their own individual experiences Share your taste, your thoughts, their criteria is a very important part for learners It is very illuminating to hear other people´s ideas about a language class
  • 11. OPEN ENDING. Provide students with open-ended exercises and activities. An open-ended item has many right answers, so learners can respond at different levels. A closed-ended exercise is homogeneous. Apart from the fact that this can be done without understanding, it is inappropriate for a heterogeneous class.
  • 12. COMPULSORY PLUS OPTIONAL Giving classes a personalized form is a way to give students more than what is required Give activities that are sufficiently easy for all students to do all or almost Every group is heterogeneous, and we must take this into account.
  • 13. After listening to the audios of my peers, I think it is very important to know about the mixed abilities classes and to apply them in each of the classes, so that the students can improve their learning, each detail is a small part of what we should do constantly in each of the activities or lessons. penny gives us good tips to be able to pray them and follow the real procedure, this could be quite the most easy and effective class CONCLUTION
