As we all know, road safety is considered as
one of the most important safety precautions
that have to be taken to save our lives. To
ensure road surface quality it should be
monitored continuously and repaired as
necessary. Well maintained roads contribute a
major portion to the country’s economy. One of
the major problem is potholes on roads. The
problem is more scary in rainy season.
Every year we lose more than one lakh lives on
Indian roads due to accidents and the
proportion of the accidents due to potholes on
the road is quite significant. Number of
accidents are more when the potholes are
covered by water during monsoon.
If these potholes can be detected in real time
while driving, it will help vehicle drivers to
avoid it and thus to escape from a near danger.
Here we propose the design of ‘Pothole
Detection System’ which assists the driver in
avoiding potholes on the roads, by giving the
prior warnings. Warnings can be like buzzer, if
they are approaching a pothole. And the
information is sent to municipal authorities
with all the dimensions of pothole and location.
The location of Pothole can be shown in Google
map.

 RASPBERRI PI 3: The Raspberry Pi 3 is a
basic embedded system and used to reduce the
complexity of systems in real time applications.
The main signal processing chip unit used in
Raspberry Pi system is a Broadcom BCM2837
1.2GHz chip in which cpu core is a 64bit ARM
Cortex-A53 quadcore processor. The main
processing chip connects camera and display.
 PI CAMERA: The Camera Module
can be used to take high-definition
video, as well as stills photographs. It
supports 1080p30, 720p60 and VGA90
video modes, as well as still capture. It
attaches via a 15cm ribbon cable to the
CSI port on the Raspberry Pi. The
camera module used is able to deliver
clear 5MP resolution image, or 1080P
HD video recording at 30fps.
 MATLAB: MATLAB is a high-performance
language for technical computing. It integrates
computation, visualization, and programming
in an easy-to-use environment where problems
and solutions are expressed in familiar
mathematical notation. Here in this we are
writing an algorithm to detect pothole.
 GPS: GPS has many major uses but here we are
exclusively using it for locating the pothole in
google maps.
In the proposed System design,

pothole. Then the image send to the
cloud, and the information can be
monitored by municipal authorities.

administration to plan and act based on the
notifications and public can keep a vigil on the
performance of municipal administration in
addressing the pothole complaints. The
hardware model is cost effective which is an
added advantage.
