2. INTRO
O A vehicle registration plate is a metal or
plastic plate attached to a motor vehicle or
a trailer for Official Identification purposes.
O The registration number is a numeric or
an alphanumeric code that uniquely
identifies the vehicle within the issuing
region’s database.
3. SO WHAT ARE WE TALKING
ABOUT ??
O Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is a mass
surveillance method that uses Optical Character
Recognition on images to read the license plates on
vehicles.
O ANPR Cameras are specialized types of CCTV camera
that has software built into it to help ID and capture
license plates on still and moving vehicles.
4. WHAT’S THE BASIS /
PREMISE ?
O ANPR can be used to store the images
captured by the cameras as well as the text
from the license plate, with some configurable
to store a photograph of the driver.
O Systems commonly use InfraRed (IR) lighting
to allow the camera to take the picture at any
time of the day. ANPR technology tends to be
region-specific, owing to plate variation from
place to place.
5. SO WHERE IS IT USED ?
O ANPR systems are here to stay – from
Parking and Motorway Tolling to Border
Control and Journey Time Enforcement
O The most predominantly prevalent usage
of ANPR, today, is in Electronic Toll
Collection systems (ETC) / Intelligent
Traffic Management Systems.
6. Purpose
• The Automatic Number Plate Recognition is a system
designed to help in recognition of number plates of
vehicles.
Basis
• This system is based on the image processing
system.
Use
• This system helps in the functions like detection of the
number plates of the vehicles, processing them and
using processed data for further processing like
storing, allowing vehicles to pass or to reject vehicle.
9. Basic Functions in ANPR
Capture an optimized
image of the car(s).
Process the optimized image
to segregate & read the
license plate(s).
Store the recognized
image in the database.
10. Embedded Systems
O The entire process of ANPR is hinged on
the very basis of a singular Embedded
System –the CAMERA.
O The Camera forms the crux of the entire
system – for without the presence of the
Camera and it’s specialized software,
there would be NO recognition of those
License Plates.
11. ANPR Camera Pt.I
O The Camera herein has to do a majorly
different task from what the rest of its
brethren have been designed to do.
O There are numerous tasks it must carry
out – and all within the timespan of less
than a heartbeat!
13. Camera Pt.III
To put it in the simplest of words –
The Camera must take the most OPTIMIZED
picture of the License rather than just a normal
picture.
The camera, triggered by the IR sensor,
captures the image of the approaching vehicle
and after further processing of the vehicle using
image processing information of the vehicle
such as number plate is stored in the computer
using Automated Number Plate Recognition
System.
14.
15. Camera Pt.V
O We generally use two cameras for traffic
surveillance :
i. The monochrome camera produces
high-contrast license plate images
characterized by great clarity.
ii. Simultaneously, a second camera
captures color overview images of the
vehicles for additional video evidence.

17. ANPR Software
O There are numerous software features :
i. High Recognition Rate
ii. High Recognition Speed (<0.2s)
iii. Supporting Multiple Lane Motion
Detection
iv. Standardized Resolution of 720*480
(NTSC) to provide higher accuracy
v. Vehicle counter feature

19. Camera Specifications
(General)
O Mounted approx. 36 inches from the height of the street /
lane.
O As straight on without being in the line of travel.
O Recording at a resolution of 30fps.
O Settings in the On-Screen Display (OSD) to eliminate
interference from light sources – like headlights or
taillights.
O Varifocal lens for narrowing the field of view to just over a
single lane’s width.
O Availability of RS 485 connection that goes back to the
DVR and controls the OSD remotely.
O Two most common types of cameras used are :
O Bullet Camera
O Box Camera
