Portocaval anastamosis is a collateral connection between the portal and systemic venous systems that develops due to portal hypertension as a result of liver disease. This connection allows blood to bypass the liver, which can cause dangerous variceal bleeding from enlarged veins in the esophagus or stomach. Treatment options include endoscopic ligation of the varices, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt procedures, surgical shunts, and ultimately liver transplantation.
