A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. - 2. TOP 3 CLASS ASSIGNMENTS 1. The service learning project was an awesome experience. I enjoyed putting myself out there, getting to know new people, the teamwork and most of all getting to practice my communication skills. 2. I enjoyed the Blog Reflection assignment because it is just so true. I just never really knew until the assignment was given. I like how they gave us ways to fix it, so in the future I will know what to do in a situation like that. 3. I liked the assignment about stress. It was something I needed personally, so yes it was one of my favorites. It went deep and really helped me to be open minded and change the way I think in order to reduce my stress.
- 3. FAVORITE JOURNALS I liked the Journal Entry #33. I liked seeing how I looked at things from the beginning of the class to how I look at them now. Journal Entry #29 was an assignment that dug deep into my emotions and past memories. It was hard to go back and listen to how I felt at the time after writing it down. Writing it down did not give it the emotion I was actually feeling, but it made me re-think if I should actually be frustrated or if I was just over reacting. My other favored Journal Entry was #28. Its good to know that I stay true to who I am, to others and that I have self-respect for myself.
- 4. MODULE MOST LIKED I enjoyed Module 7 the most. I feel like this module was the one that made me open up to how I was feeling personally and which module related to some of my problems the most.
- 5. LESSONS I WILL CARRY WITH ME The lessons that will carry with me on to the next semesters will be, how to get the most out of studying, the self assessment and the lesson over stress.
