McCarthyism came to Hollywood in the 1950s when Senator Joseph McCarthy began accusing government employees and Hollywood figures of being communists. The House Un-American Activities Committee interrogated individuals in Hollywood, asking about their involvement with the Communist Party and forcing them to name others. Those named were blacklisted in the industry. McCarthyism eventually declined after McCarthy began investigating the U.S. Army and committed suicide, but the blacklist continued and many in Hollywood had to deny being communists to continue working.
