Report on what I did during the week
01/12/08/-05/12-08
Compiled by: Tshepo Makgakge
Position: Industrial Engineering Trainee
Submission Date: 08 December 2008
1. Terms of reference
On the 24th
November 2008, Ms Charity Van Wyk the process engineer of Plastop requested a
report on what I (Tshepo Makgakge) did during the week and what I saw. The report with
recommendations is due on the 08 December 2008.
2. Procedure
2.1 Work measurement- is the application of techniques designed to establish the time for a
qualified worker to carry out a task at a defined rate of working
2.1.1 The basic approach to method study consist of the following six steps
SELECT- the work to be studied and define its boundaries.
RECORD- The relevant facts about the job by direct observation and collect such additional
data as may be needed from appropriate sources.
EXAMINE- the recorded data and the detailed breakdown critically to ensure that the most
effective method and motions are being used and those unproductive and foreign
elements are separated from productive elements.
MEASURE- the quantity of work involved in each element, in terms of time, using a stopwatch
and time study sheet
COMPILE- the standard time for the operation.
DEFINE- precisely the series of activities and method of operation for which the time has
been compiled and issue the time as standard for the activities and methods
specified
NB (Because the times measured in this case form basis for the real time studies, I selected,
recorded, examined and measured the job only)
3. Findings
Select- the job to be measured is requesting a mould from Kiewiet (storekeeper) and moving it
from the mould store to the machine.
Record- the elements of this differed every time, there are many stoppages in this process mainly
because of tea breaks and smoking breaks in between the elements. Sometimes the process is
started by one person and then finished by another.
Examine- the elements were broken down as follows;
- Request for mold
- Kiewit Move to the rack to search for mould
- Kiewit Search for the mold
- Setter Leave the mold store
Measure- the results for the timing can be found in the appendix page at end of the report. It can
be noticed that in 2nd
observation, the time is much longer than that of the 1st
observation. This is
so because when the mould was requested, the person who requested the mould did not have a
reference number therefore he was sent to QC (Quality Control) to ask for a sample so that they
can give him the mould. When he came back, he had the wrong sample.
4. Conclusion
There is no specified procedure for mould requesting. Not all the moulds are placed in their
positions. The unspecified tea times and smoking breaks are affecting the rate of productivity, as
there are many stoppages in between work cycles. It is very important that the mould store is
organized so that a lot of time and money is saved.
5. Recommendations
I recommend that everyone in the factory should work together in practicing good housekeeping,
we should all take responsibility for maintaining an organized factory and always remind our
colleagues when they forget to put things in their place. A sequence has to be put in place for all
the processes and more time studies must be conducted in order to establish the standard time.
There is a high probability that many moulds will be requested on Monday and Tuesday.
