WORK STUDY
• Prepared by: Rahane Sanket .P.
• Roll No: 135
• Class: B.E. (CIVIL)
• Division: B
• Subject: Construction Management
• Guidance of: Prof Paithankar
WORK STUDY
• Definition:
• It is generic term used in the examination of human work & leads to
systematic investigation of factors which affects efficiency and economy of
situation.
• Objectives:
• Improve the total performance of operating unit.
• Reduce the time & cost of construction.
• Effective use of resources.
• To evaluate the performance of labour.
• To assist management to obtain the optimum use of the human and material.
Why Work Study Is Important?
• Work study is a service to management and supervision work study is valuable
tool for all managers because of following reasons:
• To increase the productivity of organization.
• Help to find out new technology in organization.
• It is most accurate method and helps to set the standard of performance.
• It is relatively cheap & easy to apply.
• It can be used anywhere.
• Save the result of properly applied work and work should continue in the
improved form.
Procedure of Work Study
• SELECT: Select the work to be studied.
• RECORD: Record all the facts about methodology by direct observation using most
suitable recording techniques.
• EXAMINE: Examine the recorded facts critically & challenge everything that is done,
the purpose of the activity, the place where it is performed etc.
• DEVELOP: Develop the most economic method taking into account all circumstances.
• MEASURE: Measure the quantity of work involved for method selected & calculate the
standard time for doing it.
• DEFINE: Define the new method & related time.
• INSTALL: Install the new method as agreed standard practice with time allowed.
• MAINTAIN: Maintain new method.
Advantages of Work Study
• Reduce the manufacturing cost.
• Find out requirement of labour.
• For improvement in work find out systematic method.
• Provide better services to client.
• Simplify the supervision.
• Better utilization of resources.
• Enhanced the bonus.
• Increase the quality of product.
• Helps to increase the profit of organization.
SYMBOLS USED IN WORK STUDY
• -OPERATION: Indicate the main step in process method or procedure usually
material or product concerned is modified or changed during operation.
• -INSPECTION: Inspection for quality and check for quantity.
• -TRASPORT: Indicated movement of workers material or
equipment from one place to another.
• -DELAY: Delays occur when condition do not permits the
performance of the next activity immediately various delays and
interruptions are denoted by this method.
• - STORAGE: Indicate a controlled storage in which material is received into
or issued from store under e.g. material in stores.
• Classification of work study:
Work
Study
METHOD STUDY
To simplify the job & develop new
techniques or more economicant method of
doing work
WORK MEASUREMENT
To determine the actual time required to
complete the work
Method Study
• Definition:
• It is a technique of systematic recording & critical examination of existing and
proposed ways of doing work and developing an easier & economical method.
• Objectives:
• Improvement of manufacturing processes & procedures.
• Improvement of working condition.
• Improvement of plant layout and workplace layout.
• Improvement in safety hazard.
• Reducing human effort and fatigue.
• Reducing material handling.
• Standardization of method.
Why Method Study Is Required?
• When we require a high operating cost.
• Area in which high wastage is produced.
• For the place where overtime is utilized.
• When there is rejection of product due to inefficiency.
• When we want to improve the quality of work.
• When there is adequacy of safety measures.
• When the production of product goes on decreasing continuously.
Procedure of Method Study
• SELECT: Select the work to be studied.
• RECORD: Record all the facts about methodology by direct observation using most
suitable recording techniques.
• EXAMINE: Examine the recorded facts critically & challenge everything that is done,
the purpose of the activity, the place where it is performed etc.
• DEVELOP: Develop the most economic method taking into account all circumstances.
• DEFINE: Define the new method & related time.
• INSTALL: Install the new method as agreed standard practice with time allowed.
• MAINTAIN: Maintain new method.
Work Measurement / Time Study
• Definition:
• It is a technique to establish the time required for a qualified worker to
carryout a specified job at a defined level of performance.
• Objectives:
• To reduce non-productive time.
• To fix the standard time for doing a job.
• To improve methods.
• To determine manpower, equipment etc. required for a job.
Uses of Work Measurement
• To compare efficiency of alternate methods.
• Standard time is used as basis for wage incentive schemes.
• It helps for Cost Estimation.
• It helps to plan work load of man & machine.
• To determine the requirement of men & machine.
• The method which takes the least time that will be the best method.
• Provide all necessary information that can enable estimates to be made
for tenders, selling prices and delivery dates.
Procedure of Work Measurement
• SELECT: The work to be studied is selected.
• RECORD: All the relevant data relating to the circumstances in which work is
being done, the method and the elements of activity in them.
• EXAMINE: Record the data and the detailed breakdown critically to ensure that
the most effective method and motions are being used and that unproductive and
foreign elements are separated from productive elements.
• MEASURE: The quality of work involve in each element in term of time using
the appropriate work measurement technique.
• COMPILE: The standard time for the operations which in the case of stop watch
time study will include time allowances to cover relaxation personal needs.
• DEFINE: The series of activities and method of operation for which the time has
been complied and issues the time as standard for activities and methods specified.
