A STUDY ON THE PLASTIC WASTE
MANAGEMENT IN DHAKA CITY
PRESENTED BY
▪ ENGR. SAYED SHAJEDUL HASAN.
INTRODUCTION
The term “plastic“ includes materials composed of various elements such as
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine and Sulphur.
 Plastic is the general term for a wide range of synthetic or semi synthetic organic
solid materials.
It is one of the few new chemical materials which pose environmental problem.
Due to their relatively low cost, ease of manufacture, versatility, and
imperviousness to water, plastics already displaced many traditional materials,
such as wood, leather, paper, metal, glass, and ceramic, in most of their former uses
In developed countries, about a third of plastic is used in packaging and another
third in building such as pining used in plumbing or vinyl siding. Other uses
include automobiles (up to 20% plastic, furniture, and toys.
PLASTIC WASTE AND MANAGEMENT
the demand for plastics has been increasing in modern living to improve
the quality of life.
Plastics have permeated every facet of human life such as packaging,
agriculture, water, transportation, building construction, education,
medicine, transportation, consumer durables to name a few.
The quantum of plastic waste is increasing due to increase in population,
development activities and changes in the life style.
Plastic waste has a significant portion in total municipal solid waste.
PLASTIC WASTE AND MANAGEMENT
Plastic Waste Management will involve activities associated with
collection, segregation, storage, processing and recycling.
Plastic recycling is the process of recovering scrap or waste plastic and
reprocessing the materials into useful products.
Typically a plastic is not recycled into the same type of plastic, and
products made from recycled plastics are often not recyclable.
PLASTIC WASTE AND MANAGEMENT
PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT IN
BANGLADESH
Plastic contamination is one of the main problems of Bangladesh. The
solution is possible through proper steps and proper management.
At present, many Bangladeshi industries are producing recycling
products through plastic waste collection and refining.
The plastic industry has emerged as an important industrial sector in
the country during the last two decades.
At present there are 3,000 plastic manufacturing units, 98% of which
belong to the Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
OBJECTIVE
This study is concerned on the process of plastic wastes are generated
from, collection, recycling, and analysis of plastic products.
To determine the amount of plastic collected every day for a plastic
industry at kamrangir char in Dhaka.
To determine the process of sorting and estimate the amount of
sorting plastic to be recycled per day.
To determine the recycling, and management of plastic modules.
To determine the quantity of products manufactured per day in
factory.
To study the environment of the factories.
METHODOLOGY
The total project is oriented by plastic waste management in Dhaka in
Bangladesh
Throughout this research, Qualitative research method has been followed in
gathering and the collecting all information.
Most of the data related to the plastic product’s manufacturing, waste
managements and recycling of plastic industries in Bangladesh have
been collected from the site visits, field works and several survey
reports.
Some recent data have also been collected from the journals and from
previous research papers done by several org and educational institutes.
METHODOLOGY
▪ The factories studies in the
project are – sunshine plastic

▪ Around 70 percent of the plastic
waste collected from households
origins from packaging.
▪ Around 62 tons of unsoiled plastic is
collected per day by feriwallas before
it is disposed, while soiled plastic is
retrieved by different actors (van
collectors, waste bin tokais, DCC
collectors and dumpsite tokais).
▪ The average total amount of plastic
waste collection per day for sunshine
plastic industry stands at 2460kg/day.
SORTING OF PLASTICWASTE:
Sorting, the first step in
recycling plastic waste after
collection, separates, cleans and
prepares materials intended for
recycling.
There are three types of plastic:
▪ Hard Plastic: Bottle, Electronic

Plastic Waste Management In Dhaka City

  • 1. 2017 A STUDY ON THE PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT IN DHAKA CITY
  • 2. PRESENTED BY ▪ ENGR. SAYED SHAJEDUL HASAN.
  • 3. INTRODUCTION The term “plastic“ includes materials composed of various elements such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine and Sulphur.  Plastic is the general term for a wide range of synthetic or semi synthetic organic solid materials. It is one of the few new chemical materials which pose environmental problem. Due to their relatively low cost, ease of manufacture, versatility, and imperviousness to water, plastics already displaced many traditional materials, such as wood, leather, paper, metal, glass, and ceramic, in most of their former uses In developed countries, about a third of plastic is used in packaging and another third in building such as pining used in plumbing or vinyl siding. Other uses include automobiles (up to 20% plastic, furniture, and toys.
  • 4. PLASTIC WASTE AND MANAGEMENT the demand for plastics has been increasing in modern living to improve the quality of life. Plastics have permeated every facet of human life such as packaging, agriculture, water, transportation, building construction, education, medicine, transportation, consumer durables to name a few. The quantum of plastic waste is increasing due to increase in population, development activities and changes in the life style. Plastic waste has a significant portion in total municipal solid waste.
  • 5. PLASTIC WASTE AND MANAGEMENT Plastic Waste Management will involve activities associated with collection, segregation, storage, processing and recycling. Plastic recycling is the process of recovering scrap or waste plastic and reprocessing the materials into useful products. Typically a plastic is not recycled into the same type of plastic, and products made from recycled plastics are often not recyclable.
  • 6. PLASTIC WASTE AND MANAGEMENT
  • 7. PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT IN BANGLADESH Plastic contamination is one of the main problems of Bangladesh. The solution is possible through proper steps and proper management. At present, many Bangladeshi industries are producing recycling products through plastic waste collection and refining. The plastic industry has emerged as an important industrial sector in the country during the last two decades. At present there are 3,000 plastic manufacturing units, 98% of which belong to the Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
  • 8. OBJECTIVE This study is concerned on the process of plastic wastes are generated from, collection, recycling, and analysis of plastic products. To determine the amount of plastic collected every day for a plastic industry at kamrangir char in Dhaka. To determine the process of sorting and estimate the amount of sorting plastic to be recycled per day. To determine the recycling, and management of plastic modules. To determine the quantity of products manufactured per day in factory. To study the environment of the factories.
  • 9. METHODOLOGY The total project is oriented by plastic waste management in Dhaka in Bangladesh Throughout this research, Qualitative research method has been followed in gathering and the collecting all information. Most of the data related to the plastic product’s manufacturing, waste managements and recycling of plastic industries in Bangladesh have been collected from the site visits, field works and several survey reports. Some recent data have also been collected from the journals and from previous research papers done by several org and educational institutes.
  • 10. METHODOLOGY ▪ The factories studies in the project are – sunshine plastic industries. ▪ Generally, the study was done in Kamrangir Char, Dhaka.
