2. ๏ง The global plastic packaging market
size was valued at USD 355.0 billion
in 2021 and is expected to expand at
a compound annual growth rate
(CAGR) of 4.2% from 2022 to 2030.
๏ง The expanding size of key
application industries including food
and beverages, pharmaceuticals,
personal and household care, etc.
across the world, are primarily
fueling growth in the industry.
๏ง Plastic offers both flexible & rigid,
transparent, and lightweight forms
of packaging, on account of which
companies opt for this.

5. ๏ง Climate change refers to long-term shifts in
temperatures and weather patterns. These
shifts may be natural, such as through
variations in the solar cycle. But since the
1800s, human activities have been the
main driver of climate change, primarily
due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and
gas.
The global climate is the connected system
of the sun, earth and oceans, wind, rain
and snow, forests, deserts and savannas,
and everything people do, too.
6. PLASTIC
AFFECT
CLIMATE
CHANGE
๏ง When you think of plastic pollution, you may think
of plastic bags strangling sea animals or bottles
littering the landscape.
๏ง But the impacts of plastic pollution go far beyond
the finished product and start with how plastics
are made.
๏ง The plastics industry is actually the fastest-
growing source of industrial greenhouse gases in
the world. The UN Environment Programme
estimates that the greenhouse gas emissions from
plastic production, use and disposal could account
for 19 percent of the total global carbon budget by
2040.

7. ๏ง Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules,
2021
In the 4th United Nations Environment Assembly
held in 2019, India had piloted a resolution on
addressing single-use plastic products pollution,
recognizing the urgent need for the global community
to focus on this very important issue. The adoption of
this resolution at UNEA 4 was a significant step
taken by the government. The Ministry of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change has also
issued a notification in the Gazette of India vide GSR
No. 169 (E) on 11th March 2021 containing draft
provisions for amending Plastic Waste Management
Rules, 2016, inter alia prohibiting the use of
identified single-use plastic items by 2022, for public
consultation.

๏ง Vision: โOur vision is that none of our
packagings ends up in landfill or as litter.โ
๏ง Five-pillar packaging strategy
Our Institute of Packaging Science is the only
research institute of its kind in the food
industry. Set up in 2019, it has around 50
packaging experts dedicated to developing
the next generation of sustainable packaging
materials.
9. Reducing our use of plastic
packaging material:
We want to use less packaging material,
including less virgin plastic, which we plan to
reduce by a third by 2025. Examples of how
we're doing this include removing unnecessary
plastic lids, accessories, layers, and films.
Scaling reusable and refillable
systems:
To eliminate the need for disposable
packaging, we are working to eliminate non-
recyclable plastics and investing in
innovative, alternative delivery systems. We
have run over 20 pilots of reuse and refill
systems in 12 countries.
10. Redesigning our packaging
material:
We are collaborating with industrial
partners to develop new packaging
materials and solutions. For example, we
have eliminated all plastic straws from our
products by year end 2021, using paper as
an alternative material.
Supporting infrastructure that helps
to make recycling easier:
We have a longer-term ambition to help
stop plastic leakage into the environment
across our global operations.

12. In the summer of 2018, MarketWatch
reported that McDonaldโs plans to stock
their 36,000 restaurants in 122 locations
around the globe with packagingโ
including strawsโthat are from
renewable, recycled, or certified
sustainable sources. By 2025, all their
locations will be compliant; currently, only
half of McDonaldโs customer packaging
comes from renewable, recycled, or
certified sources and nearly two-thirds of
fiber-based packaging comes from certified
or recycled sources.
13. So we conclude that plastic is a huge source of climate change. Many companies and
industries are associated with the packaging of products and the main source is plastic.
Due to awareness some companies like Nestle and McDonaldโs come forward and took
the initiative and work on their packaging to reduce packaging waste hence the
