Essay on History of Smallpox
The History of Smallpox
Abstract
The history of smallpox goes back for thousands of years. It is thought to have appeared as much
as 10,000 years ago and since then, it has claimed the lives of millions of people, many of whom
have been famous figures in history. After a vaccine was discovered in 1796, countries throughout
the world began the fight to eradicate the disease. This fight was won in 1980 as a result of the
international effort headed by the World Health Organization. Today, smallpoxis no longer a threat
in nature but the virus is still stored in labs, from which a biological weapon could be made.
Until its eradication, smallpox was a disease that had been ravaging the human race for a very long
time. It emerged as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Cortez first sailed into what is now Mexico, he brought with him five hundred men. This
small number would have been not nearly enough to defeat the battle hardened Aztec empire.
They carried with them the smallpox virus which killed off an estimated 3.5 million natives,
allowing the Spanish to obtain control (Baxby 13). Although this transmission was helpful, it
was innocent. Later, however, people would get wise to the power of smallpox as a biological
weapon. In the French and Indian War, Sir Jeffery Amherst was the British commander in chief
for the war. In a letter to Colonel Henry Bouquet, he said that Could it not be Contrived to Send
the Small Pox among those Disaffected Tribes of Indians? We must... Use Every Stratagem in our
power to Reduce them (Hoplow 62). In this way, the plan was started to infect blankets with the
smallpox virus and then give said blankets to the Native Americans as a perceived act of good will.
In addition to the millions of regular people that smallpox killed or scarred during its years of
rampage across the globe, it also nabbed some famous victims. The virus has ruthlessly taken
kings, queens, czars, and emperors. In 1157 BC, the pharaoh of Egypt, Ramses V died suddenly
and when his tomb was found and opened, archeologists found that his body was covered with
pustules that looked strikingly like smallpox. Queen Elizabeth I of England was a victim of the
disease but was able to recover

Hegemony and Youth Culture
Hegemony is a concept that involves uses of power. It was created by Antonio Gramsci in order to
understand the difference between dominant groups in society that have power and that use
intellectual and moral leadership in an attempt to win over the less powerful submissive groups
(Storey 8). In this way, hegemony will be demonstrated in youth culture. Willard states that the
cultural authority of the dominant society must be questioned as to its legitimacy in the dominant
role as the authority plays an important role in its production (739). Talcott Parson (qtd. in Osgerby)
says that youth in his view, established behaviours and values, often perceived by older generations
as unique and different from the dominant society which... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Others that called themselves the authentic gothic community didn t particularly like this and
thought they sought resistance they had been portrayed the wrong way. They then used the internet
to counteract this by posting on sites that the shooters of columbine weren t true Goths and had
merely adopted gothic fashion (Griffiths 240). This indicates that the influence of the media has
misrepresented Goths as something they are not. In this case Goths had achieved the resistance
from the powerful dominating society they sought if not in the way they planned to.
Though Goths have been outcast by the media, Paul Hodkinson (qtd. in Osgerby) illustrates a
different portrayal of Goths in society, they pride themselves on having individuality, creativity,
open mindedness and commitment (132) and this is shown in society by applying themselves in
creative works, sometimes involving their usual job.
Popular entertainment also applies to hegemony in its use of power as there is a dominant view that
through the use of popular media, video games, particular theatres and other popular forms of
entertainment youth has been badly affected and influenced by these. The transgression of juvenile
crime in Britain in Victorian times in youth is thought to be derived from penny gaff theatres
(Springhall qtd. in Osgerby 66).
Over the years popular entertainment has

Madagascar, Africa, By Madagascar
For my county I chose Madagascar, Africa. Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the
world. In 2003 an index was created by the United Nations Development Program that measures
successes in the categories of real income, life expectancy, and education. With that Madagascar
was ranked 149 out of 175 counties. A lot of this can be due to kleptocratic rule, religion, economic
colonialism, and lack of infrastructure.
Madagascar is still very much a developing country with the average Malagasy (term for a
resident in Madagascar) making only one US dollar per day. Even though Madagascar achieved
full independence in 1960 it is still ran today as if it were a colony. While under kleptocratic rule,
the dictator Didier Ratsiraka stole millions of dollars. Which in turn led to a decline in foreign
investors, it discouraged private sector development, and discredited the governments
trustworthiness. This country is based on natural resource extraction and economies like this or
much more prone to kleptocracy. When the president Marc Ravalomananacame to in 2002 he
pushed for economic reform and tried to bring foreign investors back to the country while also
keeping natural resource extraction an important role in building the economy. These efforts
received much praise from foreign donors but towards the end of his presidency he was
confronted by Adry Rajoelina who stated he was likely to disturb peace and security .
Ravalomanana was then forced to resign due to

Significance Of Silence In Night By Elie Wiesel
Silence!
With nobody to speak out and help those in need, how was Elie Wiesel and his father going to
survive the camps? Elie and his father are apart of a jewish family in the 1940 s. That means
they would be sent to a concentration camp. Hitler is in power and is conducting a genocide
against jews. Throughout the book you notice the theme silence being used. Wiesel wanted his
audience to know that not only were the Jewish people in camps silenced, but the world around
them was silenced as well. He illustrates that nobody spoke out to help the millions of dying
people that were being punished (for no reason) and nobody that was being punished was allowed
to speak out or the punishment worsened. He shows silence in several different ways including
symbolism, foreshadowing, and diction to exemplify the theme in the book Night by Elie Wiesel.
The first time you see silence in Night is when Wiesel foreshadows by saying, Even Moishe the
Beadle had fallen silent. (8). He indicates that silence will be a theme by saying Moishe had fallen
silent after he returned from a camp for immigrant jews. He foreshadows yet again on page 26
when an elderly woman is yelling that she sees a fire. (A fire that later would prove to be the end
of life for some of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The title Night symbolizes that it was as quiet as night making it dark and gloomy. The title is
the most important part of a book and Elie chose this title very wisely. He was sure that if people
were to read the book they would understand what the title means. Wiesel symbolizes an escape
to a better world when he features Juliek playing his violin on page 95. He plays his violin, not
only breaking the silence but symbolizing a world where people are free to play what they want
and say what they want. A world where everybody is allowed to speak out against what is wrong

Clarence Thomas Case Study
Clarence Thomas was born June 23rd, 1948 in Pin Point, Georgia. Clarence became the second
African American justice to serve on the United States Supreme Court. His appointment was one
of the most controversial in history. Thomas was sworn in to the Supreme Court on October
23rd, 1991 by Congress. The retirement of Thurgood Marshall led former president George H.W.
Bush to nominate a new justice (Bio, 2016). Thomas did not always have aspirations of becoming
a Supreme Court Justice. When Thomas was sixteen he earned admittance to St. Vianney seminary
to pursue his dream of becoming a Catholic priest ( Chicago Kent College of Law at Illinois Tech,
2016). Thomas obtained excellent grades but struggled with racially charged bullying. By 1967...

Senators should analyze the experience, the qualifications and most importantly how their
nomination would affect the balance of the court. In 1991, senators and the public flooded
Capitol Hill with telephone calls and telegrams, the Senate voted 52 to 48 in favor of Thomas.
Eleven Democrats joined 41 of the 43 Republicans in supporting him (Jr.Apple, 1991). Thomas
Clarence did not have much experience nor qualifications as a judge which contributed heavily
on his rating by the ABA. The balance of the court is an essential aspect as well. When Thomas
filled the vacancy for Marshall the court s liberal justices were declining which gave the
advantage to the conservatives (Dowd, 1991). The court became more balanced with
confirmation of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 1993. A senator should not vote solemnly on a
nominees political views or their qualifications, it should be a compilation of both. In conclusion,
despite his obstacles and constant criticism for his lack of questioning in oral arguments, he has
built a reputation as being one of the most conservative justices. Clarence Thomas has now
severed 24 years as a justice on the United States Supreme Court and shows no signs of retiring (

Mecom And Fado Women
The role that women play in society has changed and evolved numerous times throughout our
nation s history. Women have been viewed as both pious and ungodly, chaste and immoral, and
both precious and worthless. However, what has continued to remain constant in the lives of
women is the unchanging feeling of inequality and insufficiency compared to their male
counterparts. Those feelings endured by women are decidedly timeless, no matter what other
circumstances exist within their lives. There are indeed similarities between the lives of the
women in Lepore s biography Book of Ages and Wilson s autobiographical novel Our Nig. Both
Frado and Jane Franklin Mecom were born at a disadvantage because of the sole fact that they
were female. They each... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Camp discusses in her book Closer to Freedom, freedom of movement and the restriction of
space are greatly important to the idea and demonstration of power. When women of any race were
restricted in their movement, many of their freedoms became limited. Regional cultures and
territorial societal norms helped determine exactly what responsibilities and duties women were
expected to bear throughout their lives. A woman s geographic location was also imperative to the
amount of power they held within their own households. While men were in fact the heads of
household in all regions across early America, the amount of real authority they possessed
concerning daily tasks did vary on their

Donald Trump s Reputation In Politics
Donald Trump has said many things that many would consider unwise. One of his famous quotes
was, Likewise, tremendous infectious disease is pouring across the border. The United States has
become a dumping ground for Mexico and, in fact, for many other parts of the world. 1 That is
just one example of how Trump, though he is undeniably a fantastic business man, would make a
poor president. For though he is undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best, businessmen in the
world, Donald John Trump, Sr. is simply not suited for the world of politics. The reason he is not
suited for that world is because he is commonly seen as racist, lacks common sense, and is
completely uneducated in politics.
The first point that is in need of being addressed, is that Mr. Trump has the reputation to be a racist
person. While there is normally some bias as to whether or not a person s comments are racist,
Trump has taken away any benefit of the doubt that he had when he made this comment:
This was evident just this week when, as an example, a young woman in San Francisco was
viciously killed by a five time deported Mexican with a long criminal record, who was forced back
into the United States because they didn t want him in Mexico. This is merely one of thousands ...

That was a fact that was blatantly evident if some of his speeches about border control. Trump
has spoken of border control very poorly, with his thoughts on the matter seeming to be racist.
However Trump may feel personally about the border, what he has to realize is that now he is not
only speaking on the behalf of himself, he is speaking on the behalf of a country. A country that has
maintained very good relations with the Mexican government, and would be unwise to suddenly
break off those relations because Donald Trump cannot stop saying things that are slanderous
towards the Mexican government, such as the following quote from one of Trump s

Crisis In Sorrow
In a small urban apartment in the heart of Manhattan dwelt a small, respectable family that
consisted of a laboring father, a devout mother, and an adoring son. All of them hustling and
bustling in the business of life. The father, Conner Walton, a relatively older man with small
patches of well worn grey hair around his leathery lips and ears, worked at an enormous storage
house; full of musty boxes of trinkets and tools to supply to the locals. The motherwas ambitious
and fiery. Older, like her beloved husband, Kim Walton took it easier in her age. She stayed in the
house and cleaned, took care of their child, and apartment alike. The son, Jeffrey Walton, a bright

They read on, attempting to understand this long, wordy paragraph. What they were able to
extract was that the American stocks were falling hard, money was being lost, and banks were
closing. Many months had passed now, and the crisis was beginning to show its ugly face worse
than ever. No one had any money and they all resorted to the barter system in order to provide their
family. After the second year conditions in Manhattan were unbearable; the streets stank of rotten
food and feces, diseases and death were creeping throughout the city, and people were starving and
lying on the sidewalks begging for any scrap they could get. People were rushing down the streets
into Downtown Manhattan were the banks were, starting riots and throwing rocks in attempt to
retrieve their money. It was of no use, so the Walton family, along with Bartholomew Mats,
abandoned their urban dwelling and fled to the countryside into southern Pennsylvania. There the
economic drought took less effect because the majority of the population had means of growing
their own food and making their own clothes. They wandered around this area for days searching
for a home or just a place to slave for some food. Then they meet a kind, generous man named

Alcohol Television Commercials are Misleading Viewers Essay
Alcohol Television Commercials are Misleading Viewers
At any given time a person can turn on their television and find a commercial of some sort. Their
main purpose is for them to throw information about their product to anyone who will listen. It is
also common for this form of advertisement to be promoting an alcoholic beverage. Whether it s a
catchy song with the chorus chanting This Bud s for you! or three frogs belching Bud Wei Ser! ,
viewers learn the slogans and use them in their own lives. Needless to say, alcohol companies have
mastered the art of grabbing the attention of their audience by imbedding their images and words
through commercial advertising. Although clever, these advertisements can be misleading ... Show

Usually there is very little about the actual product at all and few statements about the specific
characteristics of the brand. They do provide, however, information on where the product can be
found and an exaggeration of its effects on the audience s lives. Additionally, the more highly
valued the image, the more persuasive the ad is expected to be (Covell, 1992, p.3), and since our
culture encourages alcohol consumption in order to have a good time, alcohol commercials play off
that information as much as they can. For example, children look up to their parents and stereotype
them positively, and since alcohol is considered an adult activity, they also tend to stereotype
alcoholic consumption positively. Along with the association of alcohol and adulthood,
advertisements are to blame for the misleading assumptions that drinking is also associated with
athleticism, strength, beauty, fun, and sophistication. This most definitely leads to premature
drinking because adolescents are always striving for these values.
If people are constantly exposed to alcohol commercials, then why is it that we don t warn the
audience about their misleading advertising? In the article, Effects

Hitler s Policy Of Appeasement
There was not one single cause that started World War II, but instead a result of several different
factors. The Treaty of Versailles was excessively harsh and angered the Germany people, The
Great Depression resulted in European Nations not have the resources to prepare an army, Hitler s
dream of making Germany a global power and the futile Policy of Appeasement were all factors
that caused World War II.
Although multiple factors contributed to the start of WW2, Hitler s agenda was the most
prominent factor in starting WW2. Hitler always wanted to go to war regardless of other things
happing around him. Hitler s rhetoric during the 1920s had made it clear that, should he come to
power, Germany would set about rearming. (H.P. Willmott, R. Cross, C. Messenger (2010) p. 28)
As early as the 1920s Hitler was planning to go to war, which is a clear indicator that Hitler s
agenda was always going to cause a war. Adolf Hitlerturned his attention to three foreign policy
goals. Second, Germany should be restored to its rightful place as the strongest European power,
and a Greater Germany should be created. (H.P. Willmott, R. Cross, C. Messenger (2010) p. 28)
Hitler wanted to make Germany the strongest European power, and the only way that was going to
happen was through war. The combination of Hitler s announcements of rearming and the idea that
one of his key goals was to make Germany the strongest European power demonstrate that Hitler s
agenda was to go to war, leading to

Informative Speech On The Theory Of Premillennialism
Why The theory of Premillennialism is false teaching
By Hunter Strohl
Specific Speech Goal: I want to show and persuade my audience to look at the faults in the Theory
of Premillennialism.
Proposition: I believe that the theory of Premillennialism is wrong.
Introduction: Good afternoon, today I want to show and encourage you to take a second look at the
theory of Premillennialism.
Before we start tearing up the theory of Premillennialism let s look at the main points of this
theory. The theory of Premillennialism is made up of 11 key points. (Rev.20) Jesuscame to
establish an Earthly kingdom, but was rejected and crucified. The Church was an afterthought of
God. There will be a rapture and an Antichrist. Christ will win the battle of Armageddon, and he
will reign for 1,000 years. The temple will be rebuilt and the Jews will return to animal sacrifices.
Satan will be freed after 1,000 years to fight one last battle. Finally judgement will take place.
This theory is very complex to get a grasp on understanding these points B. This book is full of
imagery and figurative language that the recipients understood the meaning of.
So let s apply this concept and breakdown a couple of the points of this theory.
We will examine the flaws in this belief as well.
Thesis: The man made theory of Premillennialism is incorrect because it argues for Christ to have
an earthly kingdom, a return to Old Testamentconcepts, and does not take into part that Revelation

Research Paper On Biometrics
SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT
Biometrics is a form of human identification that is used as an advanced security measure.
Biometrics uses distinctive personal traits to uniquely identify humans and eliminates the need for
traditional methods of identification such as the use of personal identification numbers or
passwords.
In technical terms, biometrics is the automated technique of measuring a physical characteristic or
personal trait of an individual and comparing that characteristic or trait to a database for purposes
of recognizing that individual. (WOODWARD, 2005)
Biometrics uses physical characteristics, defined as the things we are, and personal traits, defined as
the things we do, including the following.
1) Physical characteristics:
Chemical composition of body odor;
Facial features and thermal emissions;
Features of the eye retina and iris;
Fingerprints;
hand geometry;
Skin pores;
Wrist/hand veins.

Essay On Followers Trust
The emotions leaders display can have a great effect on their ability to influence and lead
followers (Forsyth, 2014). However, the interpretation of emotions by followers is relatively
subjective and there may be many variables. In two studies, Caza, Zhang, Wang, and Bai (2015)
researched the reactions of followers to their leader s emotion, for gaining a better understanding of
the reactions to perceived sincere emotions displayed by leaders. The level of trust followers
have for leaders who demonstrate emotions is the focus throughout the studies. This review will

Summarizing the results of the study, the authors recommendation is for leaders to use caution
when regulating their emotions, ensuring that when emotions are displayed, they are sincere.
Evaluation
The conclusions drawn from the research can assist with leader success; however, as
acknowledged by the authors, the results of their study are limited since there are many facets
of this topic worthy of further explanation. For instance, the followers who participated in the
study used self report instruments, with researchers relying on their honesty. It may be possible,
when self reporting for the emotional state of the follower to influence the results. Additionally,
individuals have the capacity to display a wide range of emotions, although differences in
follower reactions to a variety of emotions shared by leaders was not covered in this study. Since
this is not covered in the study, it is unclear how a follower s reaction would change between a
display of confidence or vulnerability. Along these line, the intensity or perceived intensity of a
leader s emotions is also not studied. However, there were many variables considered in the study,
including follower age, follower gender, follower work experience, follower tenure with manager,
and leader gender; all which increased the validity of the results. Two different cultures were used
for the study which helped to minimize the cultural influence one culture may have over the results.

Sport agents negotiate contracts for athletes. However, their responsibilities don t stop at a business

Ali And The Decline Of The Ottoman Empire
Following the death of Suleyman I in 1566, the Ottoman empire began a period of decline led by a
succession of poor sultans. The palace government broke up into numerous, corrupt factions, and
problems with theft led to financial losses. While coinage was losing value and causing inflation,
the once advanced empire fell behind technologically. Selim III came to power in 1789 with hopes
of reviving the Ottoman army, but fell short when the older janissary troops resisted and overthrew
him. At the same time, nationalist feelings, inspired by the now free Greece and self ruled Serbia,
were stirring among the Ottoman people. As Europeans were expanding their territory through 20th
and 21st century imperialism, these weaknesses of the Ottomans became... Show more content on

Russia hoped to gain access to the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, and twice Persia was
forced to give up territories to Russia. Britain hoped to gain control of Afghanistan in order to
use it as a buffer between India and Russia. In 1857, despite resistance, Persia was forced to give
up all claims to Afghanistan. Persia as a nation lacked the funds to develop its abundant
resources. In order to raise capital and increase their economic standing, the Persian rulers began
granting concessions, which allowed businesses to purchase the right to operate in a certain
place or to develop a certain product, to Western businesses. The willingness of the leaders to
sell concessions and the refusal of the people to allow Western influence in their countries created
tensions. In one such instance, Jamal al Din al Afghani staged a tobacco boycott to protest Nasir
al Din s selling of a concession to a British company to export Persian tobacco. The boycott was
effective, and leaders were forced to cancel the concession. However, growing unrest as a result
created proved uncontrollable. In 1907, Russian and Britain had taken over the country and divided
it into their own spheres of influence. The economic control exercised over Persia thereafter is
similar to the economic imperialism that many European imperialists utilized in Muslim

My Personal Relationship

700151 A personal relationship I hold dear to my heart is with me, myself and I. This is a
relationship I have given everything to, a relationship I have fought for time and time again. I
have had to deal with the lies of my brain and the foolishness of my heart. There was a time I
didn t understand myself, because of this misunderstanding I decided it was easier to hate myself
in that moment. I can say that I have come so far from that in the past year and a half. Becoming
more in tune with myself and learning to love me in a healthy way. This is my journey to finding
myself. My heart wrenching odyssey all started at the end of my junior year of high school. I had
just gotten out of a heavy relationship with someone who didn t care about me from the
beginning. I was wrecked emotionally but I would never acknowledge this as a fact. My self
esteem was at an all time low and at the time I had no idea how to rebuild it, trial and error was
my plan of action. My first mistake was thinking anyone else but myself could fix what was
broken. I put all my problems on my friends unknowingly asking them to do the impossible. I
was scared of the quiet, because it held the truth. So I would spend time with anyone that would
give me just a moment of their time. This plan had worked well enough for an amount of time but
it soon became to repetitive and didn t keep the sorrow away for any amount of time. I could also

We will п¬Ѓrst examine EU wide laws before discussing the impact of national laws on business
life.
European Union wide laws
EU laws exist at two levels: (i) regulations that are binding on member states and (ii) directives that
are binding only through enactment of a law within the member state in line with the directive. A
major influence at European level is EU competition, which is based on the belief that business
competitiveness benefits from intense competition. The role of competition policy, then, is to
encourage competition in the EU by removing restrictive practices and other anti competitive
activities. This is accomplished by tackling barriers to competition through rules that form a legal
framework within which EU п¬Ѓrms must operate. The objects of these legal rules are to: prevent
п¬Ѓrms from colluding by price п¬Ѓxing, cartels and other collaborative activities competition is
encouraged by preventing п¬Ѓrms joining forces to act in a monopolistic way prevent п¬Ѓrms
from abusing a position of market dominance they are discouraged from taking such actions as
monopoly and discriminatory pricing, which could harm small buyers with little bargaining power
control the size that п¬Ѓrms grow to through acquisition and merger the objective is to prevent
п¬Ѓrms acquiring excessive market power through acquiring, or merging with, other п¬Ѓrms within

Analysis Of Nervous Shadow Walking Backwards In Wise Blood
In addition to Hazel, Enoch Emery also denies his true self throughout Wise Blood. He
expresses his hatred for animals in several scenes of the novel, most notably the scene where he
takes Hazel to the zoo. Inside the zoo, Enoch stops at every cage and insults the animals. They
don t do nothing but sit there all day and stink, he said about two bears sitting in a cage (O
Connor 89). However, despite his hating animals, he literally becomes one later in the novel. On
page 182, Enoch shakes the hand of a man in a gorilla suit promoting a movie. He does so with
the intention of telling the man off, but instead he is enamored with how soft and warm the
hand is. He also realizes that it is the first time anyone had given him their hand since he moved
to the city (O Connor). This moves Enoch deeply, and he concludes that he does not wish to hold
the gorilla any longer but instead be him. Following this instinct, he later kills the man inside the
gorilla costume and steals the suit, running up to people and shaking their hands (O Connor 197
198). This supports the novel s theme because it is the result of Enoch preparing for an event he
does not yet understand. Michael Bolt writes in his article Nervous Shadow Walking Backwards :
Elusive Desire in Flannery O Connor s Wise Blood, that Enoch sees becoming Gonga the Gorilla
as a way to combine both parts of his personality, the part that he considers human and his
animalistic wise blood (95). Enoch s wise blood leads him to make

Camera Lucida By Roland Barthes
After Reading Camera Lucida written by Roland Barthes, I was both confused and interested by
his ideas. Though I did not understand much of the book, I was able to take a couple of his
ideas and really think about how I see photos. In the future, I intend to use these ideas when I
look at photos. One of his ideas that I was able to understand is the way he looks at pictures. The
other one is his second definition of punctum. The first of the two ideas that interested me the
most was the way Barthes looked at photos. He did not say that he liked a photo because it had
his favorite animal or color. He looked deeper into the photo. He looked to see what had caught
his eye the most about a photo he enjoyed. He called the catching of his eye the punctum. Barthes
described the punctum as, ... is that accident which pricks me... (Barthes 27). This prick didn t
always hit him with every photo. Throughout the book, he described certain photos that I thought
were interesting, but he did not enjoy them. An example of a photo that he didn t enjoy was the
photo of the two nuns and three helmeted soldiers, which was photographed by Koen Wessing in
1979. The main reason that it didn t appeal to him was that it didn t have much of a, duality
(Barthes 23) to it. Then there were photos that had caught his eye. An example of an image he
enjoyed and had his prick was a photo of an African American family; photographed by James Van
Der Zee in 1926. The family is not what the punctum was. The

Tld-400 Final Paper
The manufacture and process of TLD 400 produces small variations. Each TLD varies in size
and composition; even within the same batch they were produced, meaning they are not all
entirely identical. Because of these discrepancies, each TLD will have a characteristic response
that will differ from the response of other TLDs. To compensate, every TLD element is assigned
a correction factor. This correction factor is called the Element Correction Coefficient (ECC).
The ECC is determined by the following equation: ECC = / Qj is the average sum of charge in
nano coulombs (nC) of all the calibrated TLDs. Qj is the total charge for a specific TLDj, also in
nano coulombs (nC). Twenty three thermo luminescent dosimeters (TLD 400s) are used

Performance Enhancements In Sports Research Paper
Forms of performance enhancement have been filling the world of athletics since the beginning of
time. Humans, driven by their natural competitive instinct, have always craved the thrill of
winning. Morals become questioned, abilities become enhanced, records begin to be set and all
athletes want is more. Many believe that the severity of performance enhancing drugs in the world
of athletics is a fairly new concept. What they don t realize is that even as far back as 100 AD the
Roman Gladiators were finding different stimulants and hallucinogens to prevent fatigue and injury.
In fact, performance enhancements are not limited to just the humanathletes in competition either.
During the times of the incredible gladiators, they would feed trusted steeds a substance called
hydromel; an alcoholic beverage made from honey that would make them run even faster than
before. There s never been a time that gaining that extra edge hasn t been on the mind of our
beloved competitors.
It s no secret, people love a good show. For thousands of years people from near and far would
gather to watch incredible athletes exhibit their super human abilities. But why, as spectators, do we
find such entertainment in watching muscle ridden hulks of men throw around extreme amounts of
weight? Or why do we enjoy watching ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

comes to mind, also being the item that makes the world go around is: Money. Money leads too
worth and worth leads to fame. And what more does and an athlete want than to be famous?
Many believe that the easiest way to fulfil the life long dream that so many of us possess to

Who Is Willa Cather s Admiration In My Antonia
Willa Cather has a strong admiration for the character Antonia in My Antonia. The introduction of
My Antonia states that the narrator and Jim were to write down all they knew of her in order to

shown by Antonia throughout the story. She is a hardworking girl that belongs to a Bohemian
family who has started a farm in Nebraska. Not only is she hard working but throughout the story
she shows characteristics of being strong both inside and out. Also, it is very apparent that she
wants to be independent and make her own decisions. I think Willa Catheradmires the character

In a postmodern Los Angeles, main character Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford, is left with
an ethical conundrum. Deckard must decide whether he should follow orders and retire the

the viewers mind about artificial intelligence in this society. This parable like film addresses a
multitude of topics such as what separates humans from androids and the different tragic situations
found in this postmodern, nihilistic, dystopia (Martin, 106 107). In the Blade Runner: The Final Cut

The Conflict Between France And Germany During The Franco War
Prussian Franco War
According to the video Prussian Franco War it shows the conflict between France and Germany in
the Franco War (1870 1871). This war began after the alliance between German states caused by
Prussian overthrowing France. The Prussia chancellor Otto Von Bismarck sent a telegram to
William I, who was a Prussian king. It stated that France insulted Prussia. However, it was a
dishonest version of Bismarck to unify Germany nations. France declared the war on Prussia and
this was a tactic of Bismarck to unify German states with Prussia and the new German Empire
started. The unification of Germany demonstrated the nationalism between these countries. The
negative reaction of France led to the ruins of Paris, the high human cost and a big revolution
between these nations. France lost the control over the entire Europe. Prussia became the leading
country in the German imperial and it dominated the entire Europe. According to the encyclopedia
Britannica, nationalism is a movement in history when people have established territorial
authorities....The strong belief that the interests of a particular nation state are of primary
importance. Also, it is the belief that a people who share a common language, history, and culture
should constitute an independent nation, free of foreign domination . Germany s unification with
Prussia demonstrated nationalism. Nationalism influenced by Napoleon III through Europe was

Green Forest Is Easy On The Eye
Green forest is easy on the eye, it breaks the harshness of roads and buildings and adds interest to
farmland and mountain slopes. In its sanctuary birdsong and air currents play with your auditory
senses and aroma s of nectar, decayed logs and leaves fill the air.
After a long absence from New Zealand, I decided to reacquaint myself with the types of forests
found in the Land of the Long White cloud. In this article, I have based the forest communities on
the categories from The New Zealand Plant Conservation Network: Beech Forest, Podocarp
/broadleaf and Kauri Podocarp/broadleaf.
An introduction
New Zealand is in a temperate zone, located between the Antarctic Circle and the Tropic of
Capricorn. It is also in the path of the roaring forties, a strong westerly wind circling the globe,
between the latitudes of forty and fifty degrees. Etched by fiords, mountain ranges, volcanoes,
plains, plateaus and just over 15,000 kilometres of coastline, it shapes a diverse landscape.
Over time, plants have evolved and adapted to this landscape and climate. Today there are 2,418
native species of forest plants, which includes ferns and grasses. Native mosses, liverworts,
hornworts and lichens make up approximately another 3,480 plants. Most plants are evergreen with
about (still counting) 28 deciduous species.
Beech Forest
I like how a montane beech forest defines a distinct line across mountain slopes and the excitement
you feel when you emerge into the alpine zone .

Root Cause Analysis is an important tool that many researchers and problem solvers use to
identify and solve problems. Not only do they determine what and how an event occurred, but they
also identify how it happened. It is also used to prevent some problems and events from occurring

Is Huck Finn A Hero
What makes a true American hero? A hero is someone admired for their achievements and
qualities, or one who shows great courage. Heroes are looked up to by many for their
selflessness or actions in situations. In Mark Twain s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,
Huck Finn is a true hero. His actions throughout the story help define him as such. Huckleberry
Finn is a hero because he is clever, loyal, and moral. One heroic characteristic of Huck is his
cleverness. As young boy, he fakes his own death to escape from his father. To fool everyone,
Huck smartly kills a pig and spreads its blood around Pap s cabin in an effort to make it appear
as though robbers had murdered him. This scheme affords Huck all the time he needs to make
his getaway and makes everyone think that he s dead. Huck Finn cleverly makes up stories to
get himself out of trouble. For example, when a couple of men insist on checking out Huck s
raft, he pretends as though his father is sick with smallpox to keep the men from getting too
close. At the Grangerford s, Huck forgets his false name and tricks Buck Grangerford into telling
him. I bet you can t spell my name (Twain 75). Buck accepts the dare and spells out what Huck
said was his name. Huck is not only cunning, but also faithful to his friends. Huckleberry Finn is
a loyal person. While on Jackson s island, Huck warns Jim of a search party instead of turning him

Evaluation Of An E File System
Painters Case Study This is a thought provoking case study which, like most of the effort in
Sociotechnical Theory, is concentrated on a certain type of production system , in this case an E
File system. Socio Technical Theory is an intellectual model that helps us recognize patterns in the
way technology is used. How well businesses can utilize this model can make or break the success
or failure of an organization as they change the way they do business or introduce new technology
to their workforce. In looking at the case study by Painter B he mentions the renovation of a paper

Delayed payment on claims
Rising costs of disability benefits. According to Painter (NA), The Electronic Claim File system

Breaking The Five-Paragraph-Theme Barrier By Thomas Nunnally
In Breaking the Five Paragraph Theme Barrier professor Thomas Nunnally describes his experience
teaching the popular writing tool. The five paragraph theme requires an introductory paragraph,
three middle paragraphs that each have their own ideas, and a concluding paragraph. Nunnally
believes that this writingmodel should only be used as a writing tool and not the backbone to all
essays (Nunnally). I agree with Nunnally s stance, but also think that by the age of sixteen, students
should no longer be given the opportunity to rely on the model for writing opportunities. **
The five paragraph theme was created to be a general teaching tool for inexperience writers. It
allows the writers to easily formulate a structure essay. It tells you that you only need three
supporting details for your thesis and that each do not need to be in depth. Most teachers say that
a paragraph is only roughly 4 5 sentences long. As a result, if every paragraph is short then you re
only writing approximately 20 25 sentences. A writer can easily follow the structure given and
finish an essay in a well timely manner. The model is effective for beginners, but ineffective for
professionals (Nunnally).
Until a certain point, the model is effective for writers. It is a practical, easy template that allows a
writer to quickly set up and then write an essay, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nunnally states its purpose to provide[s] for effective inculcation of concepts such as unity,
coherence, and development (Nunnally). The model is structured to unite each paragraph to each
other by using a thesis statement paragraph, three supporting paragraphs for said idea and finally,
to summarize your essay. The use of transitional words allows the author to smoothly connect each
paragraph and idea. Finally, the model develops chronologically. The author will introduce, prove
and conclude. The five paragraph model fulfills its purpose for the inexperienced writers

The Truth about Our Secret
Susan Griffin s main focus in her essay Our Secret is on Heinrich Himmler s life. She hopes to
better understand how people come to be who they are as a product of childhood and adolescent
experiences. Through this process she hopes her readers can become conscious to the truths of their
upbringing and not only find their true identity, but have the strength and courage to change their
destiny. Griffin is ultimately interested in finding her own identity but has been oppressed by her
grandmother to not search inwardly. She therefore uses Himmler as a mask by examining what
experiences shaped him as a child to understand what may have molded her. Griffin concentrates on

Although this is a key moment in Himmler s search for identity, as a reader we are not merely
interested in Himmler s personal story. The author fails to finish off the great thought with a

in writing this essay Griffin is looking at Himmler s journey to in turn evaluate her own. This
quote would perfectly tie back to the author and therefore be relatable by the reader if she would
tie up her loose ends. The reader is left confused as to why she doesn t elaborate after this key
point and wondering if the author even realizes that she and Himmler are going through the same
process.

to find out why this happened, what personal connections and lessons the author has derived from
this examination, and what the reader could do to negate these possible effects in their own or their

Explain The Extent Between The Federalists And The 1790s
order to stop sole control of power, the Constitution deliberately dispersed said power between the
member states and the national government. This had the effect of a fragmented government
structure where co ordination was in short supply and control lay in a plethora of discordant
hands. The realisation that this could only be overcome via the coming together of similar
minded folk who could, in turn, appropriate the presidency and control congress dawned, and the
1790 s heralded two American national parties, The Federalists and the Republicans. However,
this does not mean that there was a complete absence of political activity prior to the 1790 s. The
exact opposite is in fact true. There was already large social, racial and economic disjuncture...

Questions of national interest consumed both parties focus and naturally, drew their attention
beyond state lines. Support had to be drawn from all over the country, the Federalists, from the
banking, commercial and financial interests and the Republicans, from small farmers, debtors,
southern planters and frontier settlers .They could not afford to be exclusive parties. The dangers of
a narrowly based coalition were acute and as such, both parties needed to increase their support.
Otherwise, neither party would have the slightest chance of gaining a majority vote and in turn
winning the presidency. This, according to many scholars, can be held accountable for the
extremely broad scope of the two modern American parties that are almost indiscernible from one
another. Parties must be adept to the changing patterns of American life. Indeed, the failures of the
Federalist and Whig parties in pervious years can be attributed to their stubborn resistance to
widening their coalition. Both of the modern parties have taken valuable lessons from these
failures, although lapses in attention have seen them suffer electorally in the

U.S Government Tackles Tax Evasion
Many U.S citizens disagree with the Internal Revenue Code when it comes to the percentage they
must pay out of their earned and unearned income; as a result, many of them might use some type
of strategy in order to report less income to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and don t pay that
much in taxes. For example, many taxpayers decide to use tax planning strategies such as timing
strategies, income shifting strategies and conversion strategies to reduce their before tax income.
All these strategies mentioned before are an example of tax avoidance, which is a legal way to
minimize tax liability. On the other hand, there are also some strategies that fall within the scope of
tax evasion, which is the illegal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On April 2016, the WSJ detailed on the article The Panama Papers Scandal the wrongdoing of a
Panamanian Law Firm, Mossack Fonseca, which specialized on offshores holding companies.
These companies were protecting their clients by hiding wealth or suspicious transactions in tax
havens. Public figures, executives and celebrities were some of the clients of those companies,
reported the WSJ. This article also reports that more than 70 Swiss banks confessed to the U.S. that
they encouraged tax evasion, many said ... using Panamanian corporations. In other words, the
Panama Papers bring to light the possibility of tax evasion by many taxpayers who deposit funds
illegally into those companies without a true business purpose. As a result, the U.S Justice
Department says it is reviewing the documents to see if they contain evidence of corruption that
could be prosecuted, stated the

Similarities Between Young Goodman Brown And The Cask Of...
Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen
Poe have surplus amounts of irony that animate both short stories. Demented felonious antagonists
and clueless protagonists cause the stories to seem similar. Montresor, a cunning and licentious
human from The Cask of Amontillado and caring Goodman from Young Goodman Brown
persistently use verbal irony, nevertheless, the irony is unique to each story.
In The Cask of Amontillado and Young Goodman Brown the verbal irony examples are different
because they serve various actions. In The Cask of Amontillado the scheming Montresor tells
Fortunato, we will go back; your health is precious...we will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be

The Cask of Amontillado has its own unique purpose for verbal irony. The antagonist, Montresor,
uses his lies to lure Fortunato into trusting him. Montresor continuously expresses his care for
Fortunato s health, although his sole purpose in meeting with him is to punish with impunity (Poe
6) and extract revenge on Fortunato for causing him a thousand injuries. Edgar Allen Poe means
Montresor will give Fortunato a punishment without punishment, however, the situation becomes
ironic because burying him alive is a form of punishment. In Montresor s cynical words there are
numerous other examples of irony. In The Cask of Amontillado Montresor toasts Fortunato s life
and says In pace requiescat (Poe 13) whilst reminiscing about his horrendous crime after fifty
years. Montresor s reminiscence is significant because it shows that the crime s successful, it s
ironic because Montresor expects Fortunato to be at peace after he leaves him in a damp
catacomb to die. Similarly, Young Goodman Brown also has a gloom dying hour, after he looks
for Faith and finds a congregation that praises the Devil instead. In his eagerness to return to his
Faith, Goodman questions the circumstance and asks, but where is Faith (Hawthorne 11)? His
desire to stay out of the path that leads him to the evil shows that his morals are stronger than his
cravings to face the Devil.

Young Americans For Freedom Analysis
In contrast, the American liberal ideologues of the time seemed to be swinging more and more to
the left even in the face of the now all powerful Soviet Union from which Rand had previously
escaped. While Eugene Debs ultimately never achieved a meaningful socialist coalition, the labor
movements of the early 20th century had continuously scored major victories in establishing unions
and increasingly stringent labor standards. By 1932, the Great Depression had destroyed much of
the earned material wealth of millions of Americans and left those same Americans with little in the
way of opportunity. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a cousin of former President Teddy Roosevelt and
an ardent liberal, beat the beleaguered incumbent Herbert Hoover in the... Show more content on

Indeed, he was that conservative; however, it was not the time for a Goldwater conservative in
America. Goldwater was seen as an unhinged maniac who would lead us into a nuclear
apocalypse, as popularized by an infamous Johnson campaign commercial. Even Nixon (who was
an actual unhinged maniac) and Ford (who wasn t) would fail to claim leadership even as
conservative Republicans began winning more and more. It would be a former actor by the name
of Ronald Reagan who would ultimately become the conservative Godsend that Buckley and his
ilk so desired. In his famous speech in support of Goldwater, A Time for Choosing, Reagan said
You and I have the courage to say to our enemies, There is a price we will not pay. There is a
point beyond which they must not advance. And this this is the meaning in the phrase of Barry
Goldwater s peace through strength. Winston Churchill said, The destiny of man is not measured
by material computations. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we re spirits
not animals. And he said, There s something going on in time and space, and beyond time and
space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty. Using his skills as an excellent orator, Reagan
would immediately become one of the most lauded conservative voices in America although
Goldwater would lose the election Johnson in a landslide, Reagan would use his speech to

Clara Barton
I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I
can stand and feed and nurse them. A quote by Clara Barton, American civil war nurse and
founder of the American National Red Cross (Lewis). By many, Clara is said to be The Angel of
The Battlefield , how does one acquire such a title (Allen)? Through her family life, her efforts
providing relief to soldiers on the front lines, and her work with the international and american red
cross, she earned the title of The Angel of the Battlefield (Clara Barton).
December 25, 1821, Clara Barton was brought into this world in North Oxford, Massachusetts.
Her father worked as not only a farmer but also as a state lawmaker. He even served in the
American Revolution (Allen). One of Clara s most famous quotes The patriot blood of my
father was warm in my veins (Lewis) illustrates her dedication to the patriot cause, likely brought
upon by her father s influence. Her mother, Sarah, was responsible for urging Clara to become a
teacher due to how well spoken and well read she was at such a young age (Clara Barton
Biography). At the age of eleven, Clara says that she was given the task of caring for and looking
after her brother who had fallen in. In exchange for her aid and care, Clara s brother taught her
skills that would provide very useful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Nonconformity and Its Effects
A nonconformist refers to a person who cannot abide by the established rules and values of society.
Because he has a different set of standards, he perceives the world in a unique manner and
consequently fails to accept the general population s point of view. He is the one who walks the
path most would be unwilling to take. One such individual is Meursault, the nonconforming
protagonist in Albert Camuss The Stranger. In this critically acclaimed novel, Camus carefully
develops Meursault s nonconformist character and explains how that personality causes a series of
events that ultimately ends in Meursault s death. Meursault s emotionless behaviors clearly reveal
his nonconformity to society. For example, Meursault could never express any... Show more content

Rather, Meursault chooses not to dwell on the matter because the death would not essentially
cause any difference in his ongoing life. Furthermore, Meursault s lack of repentance after
murdering a man solidifies the fact that he is a significant nonconformist. For instance, during the
questioning for his action, he didn t take... [the examining magistrate] seriously and it all seemed
like a game to him (63 64). Also, he was even going to shake his hand on his way out (64). The
values of society state that a criminal should feel at least some regret over his crimes. Thus, most
would agree that the arrested should feel some fear and guilt simply from facing the justice system.
However, through his actions and attitude, he just ignores all of the generally accepted rules. Not
only he lacks the emotion of remorse, he rather enjoys the time. Meursault s indifference to the
death of his mother and the arrest demonstrates his inability to conform to society s norms. Due to
his unacceptable nonconformist actions, Meursault invites distrust and coldness from the French
judicial system, which symbolizes society as a whole, during his trial. For example, during the
trial, the prosecutor catches on all the little details of Meursault s atypical personality and utilizes
them to raise Meursault s punishment. He first accuses Meursault of cruelty by exclaiming a
stranger may offer a cup of coffee, but that beside the body of the one who brought him into the
world, a son

Two Major Characteristics Of Organic Growth
1.Describe two major ways in which a company can grow. Give examples to illustrate the two
ways of growing. Every entrepreneur drives towards growth. Usually the desire to become
bigger, access a larger client base, increase earnings and wealth is a major goal of all business
owners. Usually growth can be organic or inorganic. Organic growth is the one orchestrated and
fueled primarily by the activities and expansion within the organization. It involves increasing
marketing activities and also sales, hiring additional staff members, opening up the organization in
new territories and may even involve diversification into new businesses and creation of new
product lines. In certain instances some companies segment the market and create products
targeted at the various segments after a careful understanding of the characteristics of the various
segment. A classic example of organic growth is seen in the brewery/bottling industry. It is not
unusual to see companies in this sector offer multiple products targeted at a different portion of
the population. Beer from sorghum extracts and the ones from barley extracts are identified and
packaged separately from pure 100% ethanol based drinks. Each is produced for a different
crowds. Most breweries also have water purification units as part of the production process so lately,
many of them have also ventured into the commercial production of bottled water. It s a similar
strategy with most bottling outfits. The production of

Theme Of Act 2 Scene 5 Of The Merchant Of Venice
Why is act 2 scene 5 an important scene in the plot development of The Merchant of Venice?
In act 2 scene 5 of William Shakespeare s The Merchant of Venice, many key themes are
introduced. The relationship between Shylock a greedy Jew and his daughter Jessica a young and
naГЇve Jewess is developed, and many important ideas are revealed. Shakespeare uses punctuation,
sentence structure and emotive language (as well as many other literary techniques) to convey
emotions that have an impact on the greater story.
To fully understand the importance of act 2 scene 5, act 2 scenes 4 and 6 must be considered. In
scene 4, Lorenzo and Gratiano discuss their plan to run away along with Jessica that night, but
Gratiano argues that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her father is known to be a man who values money, exemplified by his dream of money bags .
This is also foreshadowing as usually when a dream is about money, it means great gain or loss.
In Shylock s case, it will be loss. Jessica and money are of similar value to the Jew, which reveals
his priorities in life. Asking Jessica to watch his house is a simple question, however, Shylock
personifies it, asking her to stop my house s ears I mean...casements . This may be because he
regards his belongings somewhat as friends or family, treasuring them the same way he treasures
his daughter. Jessica s physical absence as Lancelot and Shylock are conversing may be a reference
to her emotional detachment to her father. Further emphasising their distant and alienated
relationship, Jessica expresses her disdain laments that she is ashamed to be [her] father s child .
This could link to religion, as she seems to have something against

that none of us would be used as a tool of the Devil to bring harassment or discouragement upon
our brothers or sisters through continual criticism, as the Bible warns us not to give place to the

  • 2. Essay on History of Smallpox The History of Smallpox Abstract The history of smallpox goes back for thousands of years. It is thought to have appeared as much as 10,000 years ago and since then, it has claimed the lives of millions of people, many of whom have been famous figures in history. After a vaccine was discovered in 1796, countries throughout the world began the fight to eradicate the disease. This fight was won in 1980 as a result of the international effort headed by the World Health Organization. Today, smallpoxis no longer a threat in nature but the virus is still stored in labs, from which a biological weapon could be made. When Cortez first sailed into what is now Mexico, he brought with him five hundred men. This small number would have been not nearly enough to defeat the battle hardened Aztec empire. They carried with them the smallpox virus which killed off an estimated 3.5 million natives, allowing the Spanish to obtain control (Baxby 13). Although this transmission was helpful, it was innocent. Later, however, people would get wise to the power of smallpox as a biological weapon. In the French and Indian War, Sir Jeffery Amherst was the British commander in chief for the war. In a letter to Colonel Henry Bouquet, he said that Could it not be Contrived to Send the Small Pox among those Disaffected Tribes of Indians? We must... Use Every Stratagem in our power to Reduce them (Hoplow 62). In this way, the plan was started to infect blankets with the smallpox virus and then give said blankets to the Native Americans as a perceived act of good will. In addition to the millions of regular people that smallpox killed or scarred during its years of rampage across the globe, it also nabbed some famous victims. The virus has ruthlessly taken kings, queens, czars, and emperors. In 1157 BC, the pharaoh of Egypt, Ramses V died suddenly and when his tomb was found and opened, archeologists found that his body was covered with pustules that looked strikingly like smallpox. Queen Elizabeth I of England was a victim of the disease but was able to recover ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Hegemony and Youth Culture Hegemony is a concept that involves uses of power. It was created by Antonio Gramsci in order to understand the difference between dominant groups in society that have power and that use intellectual and moral leadership in an attempt to win over the less powerful submissive groups (Storey 8). In this way, hegemony will be demonstrated in youth culture. Willard states that the cultural authority of the dominant society must be questioned as to its legitimacy in the dominant role as the authority plays an important role in its production (739). Talcott Parson (qtd. in Osgerby) says that youth in his view, established behaviours and values, often perceived by older generations as unique and different from the dominant society which... Others that called themselves the authentic gothic community didn t particularly like this and thought they sought resistance they had been portrayed the wrong way. They then used the internet to counteract this by posting on sites that the shooters of columbine weren t true Goths and had merely adopted gothic fashion (Griffiths 240). This indicates that the influence of the media has misrepresented Goths as something they are not. In this case Goths had achieved the resistance from the powerful dominating society they sought if not in the way they planned to. Though Goths have been outcast by the media, Paul Hodkinson (qtd. in Osgerby) illustrates a different portrayal of Goths in society, they pride themselves on having individuality, creativity, open mindedness and commitment (132) and this is shown in society by applying themselves in creative works, sometimes involving their usual job. Popular entertainment also applies to hegemony in its use of power as there is a dominant view that through the use of popular media, video games, particular theatres and other popular forms of entertainment youth has been badly affected and influenced by these. The transgression of juvenile crime in Britain in Victorian times in youth is thought to be derived from penny gaff theatres (Springhall qtd. in Osgerby 66). • 6. Madagascar, Africa, By Madagascar For my county I chose Madagascar, Africa. Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world. In 2003 an index was created by the United Nations Development Program that measures successes in the categories of real income, life expectancy, and education. With that Madagascar was ranked 149 out of 175 counties. A lot of this can be due to kleptocratic rule, religion, economic colonialism, and lack of infrastructure. Madagascar is still very much a developing country with the average Malagasy (term for a resident in Madagascar) making only one US dollar per day. Even though Madagascar achieved full independence in 1960 it is still ran today as if it were a colony. While under kleptocratic rule, the dictator Didier Ratsiraka stole millions of dollars. Which in turn led to a decline in foreign investors, it discouraged private sector development, and discredited the governments trustworthiness. This country is based on natural resource extraction and economies like this or much more prone to kleptocracy. When the president Marc Ravalomananacame to in 2002 he pushed for economic reform and tried to bring foreign investors back to the country while also keeping natural resource extraction an important role in building the economy. These efforts received much praise from foreign donors but towards the end of his presidency he was confronted by Adry Rajoelina who stated he was likely to disturb peace and security . • 7. Significance Of Silence In Night By Elie Wiesel Silence! With nobody to speak out and help those in need, how was Elie Wiesel and his father going to survive the camps? Elie and his father are apart of a jewish family in the 1940 s. That means they would be sent to a concentration camp. Hitler is in power and is conducting a genocide against jews. Throughout the book you notice the theme silence being used. Wiesel wanted his audience to know that not only were the Jewish people in camps silenced, but the world around them was silenced as well. He illustrates that nobody spoke out to help the millions of dying people that were being punished (for no reason) and nobody that was being punished was allowed to speak out or the punishment worsened. He shows silence in several different ways including symbolism, foreshadowing, and diction to exemplify the theme in the book Night by Elie Wiesel. The first time you see silence in Night is when Wiesel foreshadows by saying, Even Moishe the Beadle had fallen silent. (8). He indicates that silence will be a theme by saying Moishe had fallen silent after he returned from a camp for immigrant jews. He foreshadows yet again on page 26 when an elderly woman is yelling that she sees a fire. (A fire that later would prove to be the end of life for some of ... His appointment was one of the most controversial in history. Thomas was sworn in to the Supreme Court on October 23rd, 1991 by Congress. The retirement of Thurgood Marshall led former president George H.W. Bush to nominate a new justice (Bio, 2016). Thomas did not always have aspirations of becoming a Supreme Court Justice. Eleven Democrats joined 41 of the 43 Republicans in supporting him (Jr.Apple, 1991). Thomas Clarence did not have much experience nor qualifications as a judge which contributed heavily on his rating by the ABA. The balance of the court is an essential aspect as well. When Thomas filled the vacancy for Marshall the court s liberal justices were declining which gave the advantage to the conservatives (Dowd, 1991). The court became more balanced with confirmation of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 1993. A senator should not vote solemnly on a nominees political views or their qualifications, it should be a compilation of both. In conclusion, despite his obstacles and constant criticism for his lack of questioning in oral arguments, he has built a reputation as being one of the most conservative justices. • 9. Mecom And Fado Women The role that women play in society has changed and evolved numerous times throughout our nation s history. Women have been viewed as both pious and ungodly, chaste and immoral, and both precious and worthless. However, what has continued to remain constant in the lives of women is the unchanging feeling of inequality and insufficiency compared to their male counterparts. Those feelings endured by women are decidedly timeless, no matter what other circumstances exist within their lives. There are indeed similarities between the lives of the women in Lepore s biography Book of Ages and Wilson s autobiographical novel Our Nig. • 10. Donald Trump s Reputation In Politics Donald Trump has said many things that many would consider unwise. One of his famous quotes was, Likewise, tremendous infectious disease is pouring across the border. The United States has become a dumping ground for Mexico and, in fact, for many other parts of the world. 1 That is just one example of how Trump, though he is undeniably a fantastic business man, would make a poor president. For though he is undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best, businessmen in the world, Donald John Trump, Sr. is simply not suited for the world of politics. The reason he is not suited for that world is because he is commonly seen as racist, lacks common sense, and is completely uneducated in politics. The first point that is in need of being addressed, is that Mr. Trump has the reputation to be a racist person. While there is normally some bias as to whether or not a person s comments are racist, Trump has taken away any benefit of the doubt that he had when he made this comment: This was evident just this week when, as an example, a young woman in San Francisco was viciously killed by a five time deported Mexican with a long criminal record, who was forced back into the United States because they didn t want him in Mexico. The motherwas ambitious and fiery. Older, like her beloved husband, Kim Walton took it easier in her age. She stayed in the house and cleaned, took care of their child, and apartment alike. After the second year conditions in Manhattan were unbearable; the streets stank of rotten food and feces, diseases and death were creeping throughout the city, and people were starving and lying on the sidewalks begging for any scrap they could get. People were rushing down the streets into Downtown Manhattan were the banks were, starting riots and throwing rocks in attempt to retrieve their money. Alcohol Television Commercials are Misleading Viewers Essay Alcohol Television Commercials are Misleading Viewers At any given time a person can turn on their television and find a commercial of some sort. Their main purpose is for them to throw information about their product to anyone who will listen. It is also common for this form of advertisement to be promoting an alcoholic beverage. Whether it s a catchy song with the chorus chanting This Bud s for you! or three frogs belching Bud Wei Ser! , viewers learn the slogans and use them in their own lives. Needless to say, alcohol companies have mastered the art of grabbing the attention of their audience by imbedding their images and words through commercial advertising. Usually there is very little about the actual product at all and few statements about the specific characteristics of the brand. They do provide, however, information on where the product can be found and an exaggeration of its effects on the audience s lives. Additionally, the more highly valued the image, the more persuasive the ad is expected to be (Covell, 1992, p.3), and since our culture encourages alcohol consumption in order to have a good time, alcohol commercials play off that information as much as they can. For example, children look up to their parents and stereotype them positively, and since alcohol is considered an adult activity, they also tend to stereotype alcoholic consumption positively. Along with the association of alcohol and adulthood, advertisements are to blame for the misleading assumptions that drinking is also associated with athleticism, strength, beauty, fun, and sophistication. This most definitely leads to premature drinking because adolescents are always striving for these values. If people are constantly exposed to alcohol commercials, then why is it that we don t warn the audience about their misleading advertising? In the article, Effects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Treaty of Versailles was excessively harsh and angered the Germany people, The Great Depression resulted in European Nations not have the resources to prepare an army, Hitler s dream of making Germany a global power and the futile Policy of Appeasement were all factors that caused World War II. Although multiple factors contributed to the start of WW2, Hitler s agenda was the most prominent factor in starting WW2. Hitler always wanted to go to war regardless of other things happing around him. Hitler s rhetoric during the 1920s had made it clear that, should he come to power, Germany would set about rearming. (H.P. Willmott, R. Cross, C. Messenger (2010) p. 28) As early as the 1920s Hitler was planning to go to war, which is a clear indicator that Hitler s agenda was always going to cause a war. Adolf Hitlerturned his attention to three foreign policy goals. Second, Germany should be restored to its rightful place as the strongest European power, and a Greater Germany should be created. (H.P. Willmott, R. Cross, C. Messenger (2010) p. 28) Hitler wanted to make Germany the strongest European power, and the only way that was going to happen was through war. Informative Speech On The Theory Of Premillennialism Why The theory of Premillennialism is false teaching By Hunter Strohl Specific Speech Goal: I want to show and persuade my audience to look at the faults in the Theory of Premillennialism. Proposition: I believe that the theory of Premillennialism is wrong. Introduction: Good afternoon, today I want to show and encourage you to take a second look at the theory of Premillennialism. Before we start tearing up the theory of Premillennialism let s look at the main points of this theory. The theory of Premillennialism is made up of 11 key points. (Rev.20) Jesuscame to establish an Earthly kingdom, but was rejected and crucified. The Church was an afterthought of God. There will be a rapture and an Antichrist. Christ will win the battle of Armageddon, and he will reign for 1,000 years. The temple will be rebuilt and the Jews will return to animal sacrifices. Satan will be freed after 1,000 years to fight one last battle. Finally judgement will take place. This theory is very complex to get a grasp on understanding these points B. This book is full of imagery and figurative language that the recipients understood the meaning of. So let s apply this concept and breakdown a couple of the points of this theory. This is a relationship I have given everything to, a relationship I have fought for time and time again. I have had to deal with the lies of my brain and the foolishness of my heart. There was a time I didn t understand myself, because of this misunderstanding I decided it was easier to hate myself in that moment. I can say that I have come so far from that in the past year and a half. Becoming more in tune with myself and learning to love me in a healthy way. This is my journey to finding myself. My heart wrenching odyssey all started at the end of my junior year of high school. I had just gotten out of a heavy relationship with someone who didn t care about me from the beginning. I was wrecked emotionally but I would never acknowledge this as a fact. My self esteem was at an all time low and at the time I had no idea how to rebuild it, trial and error was my plan of action. My first mistake was thinking anyone else but myself could fix what was broken. I put all my problems on my friends unknowingly asking them to do the impossible. I was scared of the quiet, because it held the truth. So I would spend time with anyone that would give me just a moment of their time. He expresses his hatred for animals in several scenes of the novel, most notably the scene where he takes Hazel to the zoo. Inside the zoo, Enoch stops at every cage and insults the animals. They don t do nothing but sit there all day and stink, he said about two bears sitting in a cage (O Connor 89). However, despite his hating animals, he literally becomes one later in the novel. On page 182, Enoch shakes the hand of a man in a gorilla suit promoting a movie. He does so with the intention of telling the man off, but instead he is enamored with how soft and warm the hand is. He also realizes that it is the first time anyone had given him their hand since he moved to the city (O Connor). This moves Enoch deeply, and he concludes that he does not wish to hold the gorilla any longer but instead be him. Following this instinct, he later kills the man inside the gorilla costume and steals the suit, running up to people and shaking their hands (O Connor 197 198). This supports the novel s theme because it is the result of Enoch preparing for an event he does not yet understand. Michael Bolt writes in his article Nervous Shadow Walking Backwards : Elusive Desire in Flannery O Connor s Wise Blood, that Enoch sees becoming Gonga the Gorilla as a way to combine both parts of his personality, the part that he considers human and his animalistic wise blood (95). Though I did not understand much of the book, I was able to take a couple of his ideas and really think about how I see photos. In the future, I intend to use these ideas when I look at photos. One of his ideas that I was able to understand is the way he looks at pictures. The other one is his second definition of punctum. The first of the two ideas that interested me the most was the way Barthes looked at photos. He did not say that he liked a photo because it had his favorite animal or color. He looked deeper into the photo. He looked to see what had caught his eye the most about a photo he enjoyed. He called the catching of his eye the punctum. Barthes described the punctum as, ... is that accident which pricks me... (Barthes 27). This prick didn t always hit him with every photo. Throughout the book, he described certain photos that I thought were interesting, but he did not enjoy them. An example of a photo that he didn t enjoy was the photo of the two nuns and three helmeted soldiers, which was photographed by Koen Wessing in 1979. The main reason that it didn t appeal to him was that it didn t have much of a, duality (Barthes 23) to it. Then there were photos that had caught his eye. • 40. Explain The Extent Between The Federalists And The 1790s order to stop sole control of power, the Constitution deliberately dispersed said power between the member states and the national government. This had the effect of a fragmented government structure where co ordination was in short supply and control lay in a plethora of discordant hands. The realisation that this could only be overcome via the coming together of similar minded folk who could, in turn, appropriate the presidency and control congress dawned, and the 1790 s heralded two American national parties, The Federalists and the Republicans. However, this does not mean that there was a complete absence of political activity prior to the 1790 s. The exact opposite is in fact true. Questions of national interest consumed both parties focus and naturally, drew their attention beyond state lines. Support had to be drawn from all over the country, the Federalists, from the banking, commercial and financial interests and the Republicans, from small farmers, debtors, southern planters and frontier settlers .They could not afford to be exclusive parties. The dangers of a narrowly based coalition were acute and as such, both parties needed to increase their support. Otherwise, neither party would have the slightest chance of gaining a majority vote and in turn winning the presidency. This, according to many scholars, can be held accountable for the extremely broad scope of the two modern American parties that are almost indiscernible from one another. Parties must be adept to the changing patterns of American life. Indeed, the failures of the Federalist and Whig parties in pervious years can be attributed to their stubborn resistance to widening their coalition. Both of the modern parties have taken valuable lessons from these failures, although lapses in attention have seen them suffer electorally in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, many taxpayers decide to use tax planning strategies such as timing strategies, income shifting strategies and conversion strategies to reduce their before tax income. Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe have surplus amounts of irony that animate both short stories. Demented felonious antagonists and clueless protagonists cause the stories to seem similar. Montresor, a cunning and licentious human from The Cask of Amontillado and caring Goodman from Young Goodman Brown persistently use verbal irony, nevertheless, the irony is unique to each story. In The Cask of Amontillado and Young Goodman Brown the verbal irony examples are different because they serve various actions. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Cask of Amontillado has its own unique purpose for verbal irony. The antagonist, Montresor, uses his lies to lure Fortunato into trusting him. Montresor continuously expresses his care for Fortunato s health, although his sole purpose in meeting with him is to punish with impunity (Poe 6) and extract revenge on Fortunato for causing him a thousand injuries. Edgar Allen Poe means Montresor will give Fortunato a punishment without punishment, however, the situation becomes ironic because burying him alive is a form of punishment. In Montresor s cynical words there are numerous other examples of irony. In The Cask of Amontillado Montresor toasts Fortunato s life and says In pace requiescat (Poe 13) whilst reminiscing about his horrendous crime after fifty years. Montresor s reminiscence is significant because it shows that the crime s successful, it s ironic because Montresor expects Fortunato to be at peace after he leaves him in a damp catacomb to die. Similarly, Young Goodman Brown also has a gloom dying hour, after he looks for Faith and finds a congregation that praises the Devil instead. In his eagerness to return to his Faith, Goodman questions the circumstance and asks, but where is Faith (Hawthorne 11)? His desire to stay out of the path that leads him to the evil shows that his morals are stronger than his cravings to face the Devil. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Two Major Characteristics Of Organic Growth 1.Describe two major ways in which a company can grow. Give examples to illustrate the two ways of growing. Every entrepreneur drives towards growth. Usually the desire to become bigger, access a larger client base, increase earnings and wealth is a major goal of all business owners. Usually growth can be organic or inorganic. Organic growth is the one orchestrated and fueled primarily by the activities and expansion within the organization. It involves increasing marketing activities and also sales, hiring additional staff members, opening up the organization in new territories and may even involve diversification into new businesses and creation of new product lines. In certain instances some companies segment the market and create products targeted at the various segments after a careful understanding of the characteristics of the various segment. A classic example of organic growth is seen in the brewery/bottling industry. It is not unusual to see companies in this sector offer multiple products targeted at a different portion of the population. Beer from sorghum extracts and the ones from barley extracts are identified and packaged separately from pure 100% ethanol based drinks. Each is produced for a different crowds. Most breweries also have water purification units as part of the production process so lately, many of them have also ventured into the commercial production of bottled water.
