smoothly. He was born in a castle in the Okazaki Castle Mikawa to his parents, Matsudaira Hirotada
and Odai no kata, or Lady Odai. He lived from 1543 to 1616. Ieyasu was born for greatness from the
beginning. His father was the daimyo, meaning powerful ruler, of Mikawa and his mother Odai nokata
was the daughter of a nearby samurai lord. Ieyasu s mother and father were step siblings and had him
at a very young age. They separated shortly after his birth due to his mother being sent back to her
family. After a few years both Lady Odai, and Hirotada remarried and had children giving Tokugawa
eleven half siblings total. Most of Ieyasu s childhood and young adult years were spent in and around

Sandra Bartky begins her piece by explaining Michel Foucault s ideas about modern power dynamics.
Unlike in the past, power in modern society focuses not only on controlling the products of the body
but, rather, on governing all its activities. In order for this power to continue, people are disciplined
into becoming docile bodies which are subjected and practiced (Bartky, 63). This discipline is imposed
through constant surveillance in a manner similar to the Panopticon. Inmates in said prison are always
visible to a guard in the central tower, so they mentally coerced into monitoring their own behavior. In
the same way, individuals become their own jailers and subject themselves to the society s whim due
to being in a state of conscious and permanent visibility to its all seeing eye (65). Bartky, however,

morals and values that specific cultures hold and how they differ from what I know and live by.
Becoming more aware of other cultures will help me be able to work with everyone no matter what
culture they identify with. One thing that I think students will benefit from in schools is having a
group to identify with whether is may be a culturally diverse group of people from many different
places or a group solely for a specific culture. With these groups, we can help educate all students in

Development of the Theater High Altitude Area Defense System
The United States Army has been developing and implementing systems in order to protect our nation
s national security. One of the systems the Army has added to its arsenal is the Theater High Altitude
Area Defense system (THAAD). During the Persian Gulf War, the Army identified a need for a system
that would be able to counter a theater ballistic missile attack. THAAD is designed to cover the upper
tier of the Army s two tiered theater ballistic missile defense plan (DOD Inspector General, 1995) and
is a mobile ground based theater missile defense (TMD) system that can protect military forces that
are deployed at home or abroad, population centers, and civilian assets from Theater Ballistic Missile
(TBM) attacks. THAAD engages incoming ballistic missiles and is capable of intercepting them at
high altitudes. The prime contractor selected for the project was Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space.
The project would encompass the design and materials of radars, battle management command,
control, communications, mobile launchers, interceptors and ground support equipment. The
launching system would be on a palletized loading system fitted on existing vehicles the Army has in
their inventory. THAAD s first inception was in 1992 and it would take many years for the project to

Social Contract Theory is the view that a persons moral and/or political obligations are dependent
upon a contract or agreement among them to form the society in which they live. It is rightly
associated with modern moral and political theory and is given its first full exposition and defense by
Thomas Hobbes (Friend). Thomas Hobbes, an English philosopher (1588 1679), lived through a very
vital period of the English Civil War, which lasted from 1642 1648. During this time, the King and the
Monarchists wanted the traditional authority of a monarchy, while the Parliamentarians did not.
Hobbes had an important role in this, because he symbolized a settlement between the two groups.
Not only did he reject the theory of the Divine Right of Kings, he also rejected the Parliamentarians

The Struggle to Find Sexuality Walt Disney s movies have been thrilling young children, most
especially young girls, around the world for years. One specific movie, The Little Mermaid, had
young girls wanting to be just like Ariel and buying any paraphernalia they could after the movie came
out. But have you ever wondered where these stories have come from? Or why they always end with a
happily ever after ? The famous, Danish, children s writer Hans Christian Andersen is the father of the
tale of The Little Mermaid . Andersen s original is quite different than Walt Disney s happily ever after
tale. With differences in imagery, theme, and storyline in Andersen s The Little Mermaid and Walt

The Soane style was not one to be reckoned with. Despite exploring all the classical styles of
architecture in his lifetime, Soane, abstracted these classical conventions to fit his own personal
interpretation , leading towards a new freedom of architecture. It is this freedom that allows us to
disagree with the critical views of the 19th century, a time where Soane was indeed, a great architect
who suffered for his originality and integrity. Additionally, what people struggled to realise was that
no. 13 Lincoln s Inn Field functioned both as a house and as a museum for the study of architecture,
emphasising further the building was entitled to defy convention. As the curator for the museum from
1945 to 1984, John Summerson understood that despite how deeply the criticism affected him and the
limitations put on his architecture at the time, Soane was successful in achieving a sense of
immortality, surviving himself in the minds and thoughts of other men, undying and imperishable
