PILLAR TAPS
DEFINITION
It is a draw-off tap with a vertical inlet and an up tilted or a horizontal free outlet.
TYPES
COMPRESSION WATER TAPS:
These are the oldest and most common type of tap and also the ones which can cause the most problems.
A washertapworks by moving a washercoverednut up and down against the seat, controlling the water
flow. These always have separate hot and cold water taps.
Tap re-seaters are used with compression washer taps. Other repairs that may be required on a
compression washer tap include replacement of the washer (rubber stopper) or O-ring (rubber sealer).
BALL TAPS:
Taps with a ball fitting are usually recognisable by their single lever handle and rounded cap. They are
what is known as a mixer tap; where the hot and cold water supply is controlled by the same handle.
The ball rotates, lining up different holes to allow water to pass.
There are repair kits or individual spare parts available for ball taps. The ball, O-rings, valve seals and
springs are some of the parts that can be replaced.
DISK TAPS:
Disk taps are also single handle mixer taps and are identified by their wide cylindrical body. They work
using two ceramic disks which have holes that, when aligned, allow the water to pass. This means that
disk taps only ever require a quarter turn to reach full capacity and are easily handled.
Ceramic disk taps are very long lasting but there are a few parts that could need repair. Eventually the
disks will wear out and the cylinder or whole tap will need to be replaced. Occasionally, small particles
of dirt, grit or other foreign body can get trapped between the ceramic washers preventing them from
closing correctly, so It is worth removing and cleaning the discs before considering replacement.
CARTRIDGE TAPS:
Cartridge taps have components similar to all of the other three types of tap, this is what makes it
difficult to determine which type you have until it hasbeen disassembled. Cartridge tapshave aninternal
cartridge which, when twisted, allows the water to pass. They can be single or double handled.
If a cartridge tap is leaking, this may be due to a damaged cartridge, spring or washer. All of these can
be replaced.

MATERIAL
FINISHES
Pillar taps shall be nickel-chromium plated and thickness of coating shall not be less than service Grade
No. 2 of IS: 4827-1968*. The plating shall be capable of taking high polish which will not easily tarnish
or scale. Before plating the pillar tap, the washer plate and washer shalt be removed from the fitting,
and the gland packing shall, so far as practicable, be protected from the plating solution.
BIB TAP
DEFINITION
A tap with a horizontal inlet and a nozzle arrange discharge in a downward direction.
NOMENCLATURE
Bib Cock/ Bib Tap
NOMINAL SIZES:
The nominal sizes of bib taps shall be 8, 10, 15,20 and 25 mm.
MATERIALS
TYPES OF BIB TAP
LONG BODY BIB COCK:
A tap with a bent nozzle fixed at the end of a pipe with an extra length of the nozzle to give more
space between wall and the water drop point of bib cock. The only difference between bib cock and
long body bib cock is its nozzle’s length. Its kept this way to give more gap between the wall and the
drop point so that filling a wide bucket or washing utensils or cloths becomes easy. It also has a
standard size of 15MM.
TWO WAY BIB COCK:
Two-way bib is a modern creation to give you a flexibility to connect health faucet or hand shower
or even connection point for wash basin along with standard operating bib cock. They are widely
used to avoid an extra angle cock to connect health faucet alongside the wall hung or comode.
