Electrogastrography (EGG) is a non-invasive test that uses cutaneous electrodes on the abdomen to record gastric myoelectric activity or slow waves. EGG has been used to help diagnose patients with unexplained nausea, vomiting, and other dyspeptic symptoms by providing insight into the mechanisms causing their symptoms. EGG tracings show sinusoidal waveforms with a predominant frequency of 3 cycles per minute that increase in amplitude after eating. Some patients with gastrointestinal symptoms exhibit EGG rhythm disturbances or blunted responses to meals that correlate to some degree with delayed gastric emptying. EGG may help evaluate select patients and needs further validation through controlled studies.
