Oscillation is the repetitive variation around a central value or equilibrium point over time. Examples include a swinging pendulum and alternating current. Oscillations occur not just in mechanical systems but in many areas of science, such as the human heartbeat, business cycles, predator-prey population cycles, geothermal geysers, musical instruments, nerve cell firing in the brain, and variables stars in astronomy. The time for one full cycle to complete is called the period, while the number of cycles per unit of time is the frequency. All oscillatory motions are periodic, but not all periodic motions are oscillatory.
