The Sarcomastigophora is the largest protozoan phylum, characterized by organisms that are unicellular or colonial, use flagella and/or pseudopodia for locomotion, and obtain energy through autotrophic, heterotrophic, or saprozoic means. The phylum contains the subphylum Mastigophora, whose members use flagella to produce whiplike or helical movements to move through water, as well as the subphyla Sarcodina and Opalinata.
