INTRODUCTION The jaw (Upper and lower) is any opposable articulated structure at the entrance of the mouth. It is typically used for grasping and manipulating food. Jaw suspension means the fusion of upper jaw and lower jaw or skull for efficient biting. There are different ways in which these attachments are attained depending upon the modifications in visceral arches in vertebrates. In most vertebrates, the jaws are bony or cartilaginous and oppose vertically. The vertebrate jaw is derived from the most anterior two pharyngeal arches supporting the gills, and usually bears numerous teeth. The vertebrate jaw probably originally evolved in the Silurian period and appeared in the Placoderm fish which further diversified in the Devonian. It is believed that the hyoid system suspends the jaw from the brain case of the skull, permitting great mobility of the jaws. The original selective advantage offered by the jaw may not be related to feeding, but rather to increased respiration efficiency. The jaws were used in the buccal pump (observable in modern fish and amphibians) that pumps water across the gills of fish or air into the lungs in the case of amphibians. Over evolutionary time the more familiar use of jaws (to humans), in feeding, was selected for and became a very important function in vertebrates. Many teleost fish have substantially modified jaws for suction feeding and jaw protrusion, resulting in highly complex jaws with dozens of bones involved. Jaw Suspension or Suspensoria: The method by which the upper and lower jaws are suspended or attached from the chondrocranium is known as jaw suspension or suspensorium. Amongst the visceral arches, the first (mandibular) arch consists of = a dorsal palato pterygoquadrate bar forming the upper jaw, = and ventral Meckel’s cartilage forms the lower jaw. The second (hyoid) arch consists of = a dorsal hyomandibular supporting and suspending the jaws with the cranium, and a ventral hyoid. The remaining visceral arches support the gills and are, hence, called branchial arches. Thus, splanchnocranium forms the jaws and suspends them with the chondrocranium.

Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of California Irvine Abstract Many data analytics projects have collaborators with complementary backgrounds, including biologists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists, and AI/ML experts. Many of them have limited experience to code, set up a computing infrastructure, and use MLmodels. Existing tools and services, such as email attachments, GitHub, and Google Drive are inefficient for sharing data and analyses. In this talk, we present an open source system called Texera that provides a cloud computing platform for collaborators to share data and analyses as workflows. After seven years of development, the system has a rich set of powerful features, such as shared editing, shared execution, version control, commenting, debugging, user-defined functions in multiple languages (e.g., Python, R, Java), and support of state-of-the-art AI/ML techniques. Its backend parallel engine enables scalable computation on large data sets using computing clusters. We will show a demo of the system, and present our vision supported by a recent NIH award, dkNET(NIDDK Information Network, https://dknet.org), to serve the diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolic diseases research communities through the FAIR sharing of data and knowledge. Understanding circumstellar disks is of prime importance in astrophysics, however, their birth process remains poorly constrained due to observational and numerical challenges. Recent numerical works have shown that the small-scale physics, often wrapped into a sub-grid model, play a crucial role in disk formation and evolution. This calls for a combined approach in which both the protostar and circumstellar disk are studied in concert. Aims. We aim to elucidate the small scale physics and constrain sub-grid parameters commonly chosen in the literature by resolving the star-disk interaction. Methods. We carry out a set of very high resolution 3D radiative-hydrodynamics simulations that self-consistently describe the collapse of a turbulent dense molecular cloud core to stellar densities. We study the birth of the protostar, the circumstellar disk, and its early evolution (< 6 yr after protostellar formation). Results. Following the second gravitational collapse, the nascent protostar quickly reaches breakup velocity and sheds its surface material, thus forming a hot (∼ 103 K), dense, and highly flared circumstellar disk. The protostar is embedded within the disk, such that material can flow without crossing any shock fronts. The circumstellar disk mass quickly exceeds that of the protostar, and its kinematics are dominated by self-gravity. Accretion onto the disk is highly anisotropic, and accretion onto the protostar mainly occurs through material that slides on the disk surface. The polar mass flux is negligible in comparison. The radiative behavior also displays a strong anisotropy, as the polar accretion shock is shown to be supercritical whereas its equatorial counterpart is subcritical. We also f ind a remarkable convergence of our results with respect to initial conditions. Conclusions. These results reveal the structure and kinematics in the smallest spatial scales relevant to protostellar and circumstellar disk evolution. They can be used to describe accretion onto regions commonly described by sub-grid models in simulations studying larger scale physics.
