This document discusses the calculation of the binding energy and photo-ionization cross-section of excitons in a parabolic quantum well composed of GaAs/Ga1-xAlxAs. The key points are:
1) The binding energy of ground and excited state excitons is calculated using a variational method as a function of well width and Al concentration. The binding energy decreases with increased well width but increases with Al concentration.
2) The photo-ionization cross-section of excitons is calculated as a function of photon energy and well width using Fermi's golden rule. The cross-section decreases with increased photon energy but increases as well width increases.

Abstract: Powered by methodological breakthroughs and computing advances, electronic structure methods have today become an indispensable toolkit in the materials designer’s arsenal. In this talk, I will discuss two emerging trends that holds the promise to continue to push the envelope in computational design of materials. The first trend is the development of robust software and data frameworks for the automatic generation, storage and analysis of materials data sets. The second is the advent of reliable central materials data repositories, such as the Materials Project, which provides the research community with efficient access to large quantities of property information that can be mined for trends or new materials. I will show how we have leveraged on these new tools to accelerate discovery and design in energy and structural materials as well as our efforts in contributing back to the community through further tool or data development. I will also provide my perspective on future challenges in high-throughput computational materials design.
Prof Ong gave a webinar talk on the AI Revolution in Materials Science for the Singapore Agency of Science Technology and Research (A*STAR). In this talk, he discussed the big challenges in materials science where AI can potentially make a huge impact towards addressing as well as outstanding challenges and opportunities to bringing forth the AI revolution to the materials domain.

The surface polaritons (SP) variation in Ga As/ Al Ga As/ LH hetrojunction composition in the presence of
a strong transverse quantized magnetic field is estimated using the quantum Hall effect case. The
dispersion characteristics of the SPs are investigated using the dielectric constants values of the Ga As and
the Alx Ga 1-x As media and the defined thickness, the Alx Ga 1-x As medium. The dispersion behaviours
calculated results are listed for considered cases. It was shown that the frequency values against the wave
vector values are affected in a strong manner by changing thickness, of the Alx
Ga 1-x- As media and by
changing the variation of the dielectric constants of Ga As against the Alx Ga 1-x As. The significance
effects of the use of the left-handed (LH) medium as an upper layer of the proposed composition was
demonstrated; the frequency values are remarkably increased using LH material as an upper layer. It was
noticed that at certain conditions of the LH upper layer composition, similar results have been obtained
such as found by using dielectric upper layer.

Total Ionization Cross Sections due to Electron Impact of Ammonia from Thresh...Dr. Amarjeet Singh
In the present paper, we have employed modified Khare-BEB method [Atoms, (2019)] to evaluate total ionization cross sections by the electron impact for ammonia in energy range from the ionization threshold to 10 MeV. The theoretical ionization cross sections have been compared to the available previous theoretical and experimental results. The collision parameters dipole matrix squared M_j^2 and CRP also have been calculated. The present calculations were found in remarkable agreement with the available experimental results.
Microstructural and Dielectric Characterization of Sr doped Ba(Fe0.5Ta0.5)O3 ...theijes
Solid state reaction method was used to synthesize Ba1-xSrx(Fe0.5Ta0.5)O3 ceramic(x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5). The raw materials of making Sr doped Ba(Fe0.5Ta0.5)O3 were BaCO3, SrCO3, Fe2O3, Ta2O5 (purity better than 99%). Pellet and ring shaped samples prepared from each composition were sintered at 1400 and 1450ºC for 5 hour. The phase formation of Ba1-xSrx(Fe0.5Ta0.5)O3 was checked using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and observed a cubic perovskite crystal structure in space group Pm3m (221). Microstructure of the individual compound was examined by the field emission scanning electron micrograph (FESEM). Grain size was found to be varied with Sr content. The lattice parameter decreased with increasing Sr content. Dielectric spectroscopy was applied to investigate the electrical properties of BSFT at room temperature and in a frequency range of 100Hz–100 MHz. An analysis of the dielectric constant εʹ and loss tangent tan with frequency was performed assuming a distribution of relaxation times. The low frequency dielectric dispersion corresponds to the DC electrical conductivity.
Electrical transport properties of nanocrystalline and bulk nickel.pdfProximaCentauri15
In this work, the comparative study on the electrical transport properties of nanocrystalline nickel
ferrite (NiFe2O4) and its bulk counterpart has been carried out in detail by using complex impedance
spectroscopy in a wide range of frequencies (100 Hz–1 MHz) and temperatures (40 °C–320 °C). The
dispersive nature of the dielectric constant and loss factor is explained by the Maxwell-Wagner model
and Koop’s phenomenological theory. The value of the dielectric constant for nanocrystalline nickel
ferrite is found to be more as compared to its bulk counterpart. The frequency variation dielectric
permittivity is well fitted with the modified Debye formula, which suggests the presence of multiple
relaxation processes. The temperature dependent ac conductivity follows Jonscher’s universal power
law and reveals the presence of multiple transport mechanisms from small polaron hopping (SPH) to
correlated barrier hopping (CBH) mechanism near 200 °C. The estimated values of Mott parameters
are found to be satisfactory. Thermally activated relaxation phenomena have been confirmed by
scaling curves of imaginary impedance (Z) andmodulus (M). The comparison between the Z and
M spectra indicates that both long-range and short-rangemovement of charge carriers contribute to
dielectric relaxation with short-range charge carriers predominating at low temperatures while longrange
charge carriers are dominating at high temperatures. Analysis of the semicircular arcs of Nyquist
plot indicates the presence of grain boundary contribution to the electrical conduction process for the
nanocrystalline sample at high temperatures. The non-Debye type of relaxation has been examined by
stretching exponential factor (β) which has been estimated by fitting the modifiedKWW
(Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts) equation to the imaginary electric modulus curve. The value of β is
found to be strongly temperature dependent and its value for the nanocrystalline sample is less than
that of the bulk system which is explained on the basis of dipole-dipole interaction.
COUPLED FIELD ANALYSIS OF PIEZOELECTRIC CANTILEVER BEAMijiert bestjournal
Electromechanical modelling efforts in the research field of vibration-based energy harvesting have been mostly focused on forms of vibrational in put as in the typical case of harmonic excitation at resonance. However, ambient vibration al energy often has broader frequency content than a single harmonic. Piezoelectric energ y harvesting is a promising technology for extracting the power from environmental vibrations. It generates the electrical power of few orders of amplitudes which is sufficient to drive s everal autonomous electrical devices. Such vibration-based energy harvester generates the most energy when the generator is excited at its resonance frequency. Simplest model to be start ed is of rectangular Aluminium cantilever beam with unimorph piezoelectric patch which is per fectly bonded to the substrate plate at the end. The resulting relative motion between the piez oelectric patch and the base produces stress on piezoelectric material, which is converte d into electrical power by virtue of direct piezoelectric effect. The ability of piezoelectric material of different thickness to generate voltage at different frequency is explained in this paper. Its capability to work over a range of frequency is predicted by use of ANSYS software. Th e solid model is design and analyzed using finite element software.

Effect of calcination on the electrical properties and quantum confinement of...eSAT Journals
Abstract Fe2O3 nanoparticles have been prepared by a simple solvothermal method using a domestic microwave oven. X-ray powder diffraction measurement indicates the amorphous nature of the as-prepared sample. Calcined samples were obtained by annealing the as-prepared sample at different temperatures, viz. 400, 500, 600 and 700oC. Transmission electron microscopic images indicate that all the five samples are spherical in shape. AC electrical measurements were carried out on pelletized samples by the parallel plate capacitor method at various temperatures ranging from 40-130oC and frequencies ranging from 100 Hz -1 MHz. Results indicate low AC electrical conductivities and consequently show the occurrence of nano confined states. The exciton Bohr radii obtained from the dielectric constant values at 40oC temperature and 1 kHz frequency are 41.8, 54.8, 55.3, 56.3 and 27.0 respectively for the as-prepared sample and samples calcined at 400, 500, 600 and 700oC which indicate a strong quantum confinement effect. The impedance spectra observed exhibit non-ideal behavior. Keywords: Semiconductors, Magnetic materials, Nanoparticles, Electrical properties

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.
Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
