This document discusses phonology and phonemics of the mother tongue. It defines phonology as the study of sound patterns in languages. The objectives are to understand how sounds are organized in languages, increase students' ability to identify sounds, and develop phonemic awareness. There are two branches of phonology - segmental which divides speech into discrete segments, and supra-segmental which includes features like length, intonation, tone, and stress. Phonemes are the smallest units of sound that carry meaning. Phonological awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate spoken parts of words, while phonemic awareness specifically refers to identifying and manipulating individual sounds in words.
