-the study of pattern of sounds in
language across languages
2 Branches of phonology
1. Segmental phonology -

an idea that speech can be divided into discreet
segment.
2. supra-segmental
a. length 

b. intonation
-fallin intonation
- rising intonation
c. Tone 
d. stress and stress syllables
Phonemes
-the smallest units of sounds that carries
meaning.
example; the phoneme /e/ is different from the
phoneme /i/
.
Phonetics
A branches of linguistic that focuses on the
production and classification of speech sound.
Phonological awareness
The ability to recognized and manipulate
the spoken parts of sentence and words.
Phonological awareness begins developing
before the beginning of formal schooling
and continues through third grade and
beyond
Phonemics awareness
The ability to identify and manipulate
individual sounds [phonems] in spoken
word.
Example; being able to identify that the
word ‘cat’ has three sound [/k/ /a/ /t/]
and being able to change the /k/ sound to
/b/ create a word ‘bat’ is a sign of
phonemic awareness.
