The Media And The Stereotypes Of Women In The Media
Every day, millions of Americans view the front covers of magazines like Vogue, Cosmopolitan,
and more. They see them while at grocery stores, on the television, and even in the waiting room
at a doctor s office. The media offer advertisements with models that are seemingly slim with
perfect skin, hair, and teeth. American propaganda leaves most young, adolescent girls between the
ages of 5 18 to consider that the complexity of beauty is strict to be thin and perfect, though it is
targeted to young adolescents, it does aim towards older femaleand male age ranges as well. An
article states, While the media attempt to target every person, the level of exposure is dictated by
gender, and the majority of harmful messages is focused more toward women. For instance, in
media such as magazines where a person relies on an image to relate a feeling, girls are often
made to look inferior (Chapman). When it comes to the media, specifically in the American culture,
the popularity has massively increased over the years, turning to new weekly issues, becoming
common to the society and civilization. This causes issues associated with eating disorders,
depression and suicide, and self esteem/confidence young girls.
Young girls in middle high school look in the mirror to analyze, critique and judge the growing
woman that they see in the mirror. Overall, they seem to dislike what they see, Most think my
body is not perfect. . That brings the question of what exactly a perfect body is?

Statement Of Purpose For Transportation Engineering
Statement of Purpose Jitendra Jain Did I win? Did I lose? Those are the wrong questions. The
correct question is: Did I make my best effort? If so, he says, You may be outscored but you will
never lose. This quote from Carol Dweck (Professor of Psychology at Stanford University) has
inspired me the way I go about in my life. The belief in continuous learning with the optimistic
approach towards hard work, learning and doggedness has always been my motivation. My plans
for a master s degree are centered on the motive of productive research contribution in transportation

Luca Quadrifoglio whose work in this field has been very inspiring. His projects especially on
Innovative Strategy for Paratransit Services substantiate the role of paratransits and provide an
approach to fathom the impending first/last mile problem. Moreover, the kind of atmosphere and

Product Warning Labels and Protection Against Liability...
Product Warning Labels and Protection Against Liability Lawsuits
We have all purchased a new consumer product with several labels, stickers, and product inserts
containing warnings, disclaimers and oversimplified directions. The warnings can actually be
humorous at times as illustrated in the following examples:
В· On Sears hair dryer: Do not use while sleeping
В· On Marks Spencer Bread Pudding: Product will be hot after heating.
В· On Rowenta Iron: Do not iron clothes on body.
В· On Nytol (a sleep aid): Warning: May cause drowsiness.
В· On a Swedish chainsaw: Do no attempt to stop chainsaw with your hands.

377) in addition to the manufacturer s ability to reasonably foresee the risk.
Are people drying their hair while sleeping or ironing clothes while wearing them foreseeable
risks? As lawsuits become more outrageous, so do the warnings and there is an outcry for reform
in our civil justice system to minimize frivolous lawsuits. According to a poll conducted by
Nation s Business magazine (February, 1998) 2/3 of the businesses that responded had been
named as defendants in product liability lawsuits. An overwhelming majority felt that frivolous
lawsuits are definitely a problem and that people who file lawsuits (should) pay the defendant s
legal fees if they lose . Eighty percent were in favor of a federal law being enacted to supersede
conflicting state laws on the liability of a company if someone using it s product is injured . Courts
use a risk/utility analysis to determine whether the risks associated with certain inherently unsafe
products are reasonable. To make the determination, courts weigh the availability of safer
alternatives and whether the risks of using the product outweigh that product s utility. The myriad
of lawsuits against tobacco companies certainly raise this issue to a point of controversy. Do the
warning labels placed on cigarettes and tobacco products preclude most personal injury claims
against the manufacturers? In a recent case brought against R. J. Reynolds, an ex smoker suffering
from terminal cancer was

Airline Ticket Prices Is The Foundation Of All Economic...
Supply and demand, together, are the foundation of all economic ventures. Airline ticket prices are
determined by the demand for travelers and the marginal cost of filling the seats; thus generating
supply. The interception of supply and demand is where business is generated. This interception of
the airlines pricing curves is indicated at their equilibrium point where there s neither a surplus nor
a shortage. Why can an airlineticket from Casper, Wyoming to Denver, Colorado, and from
Denver, Colorado to Orlando, Florida cost the same? Does this make economic sense? Where and
when tickets are purchased affects the bottom line price the consumer pays. Price and value are
extremely important in economicsthus; the effect of supply and demand, affects the overall cost of
the ticket.
Goals of Pricing
Airline ticket prices can vary from day to day, from airline to airline; with the most important
variable being competition. Industry pricing for a market of such a magnitude is a micro , and
macro economic decision. Its affects will in turn effect the entire economy of the industry. We all
know that when shopping for the cheapest price for an airline ticket, depending on various
factors, Seaney (2011) you will pay hundreds of dollars more, or less, than the passenger seated
right next to you. That being, the airlines primary goal is to maximize profit(s) on every seat, on
every plane, on every route. This is the result of supply, demand, and price curve working
cohesively

The Discovery Of The Formation Of Hotspots
Davies (2009) states hot spots can be described as irregularly spaced areas within the mantle that
do not correspond with any plate tectonic processes. It was thought 50 years ago high
temperatures were found at hot spots, so rocks within the region were liquefied to create molten
magma, resulting in the term hot spot volcanos . The accepted theory for the formation of
hotspots was put forward by Geophysicist John Tuzo Wilson in 1963, who specified the Earth
has areas of fixated magma plumes deep within the mantle that have been created from intense
radioactivity in the Earth s interior (Foulger, 2003). As demonstrated in figure one the Earth s
crust passes over the mantle, the magma plume forces the boiling magma up through the Earth s
crust where the hot spot remains until the tectonic plate passes over it and the boiling lava
creates a series of new volcanoes, like the Hawaiian Islands (Davies, 2009). Although this
concept is easy to accept due to it leaving room for further research and hotspots appearing to
have a deep source, alternative hypotheses have since been argued to challenge the theory, as the
accepted hypothesis was created long before scientific evidence was available. For example, there
were discoveries such as hotspots not actually being high in temperature or being fixated relative
to one another (Stein et al, 2003). An example of contradictory evidence is the Canary Islands; the
island of Fuerteventura aged 23 MA lies closer to the ridge than the

School Curriculum And Programs For Their Secondary Education
Every year, bright and brilliant students enter or continue in the Folsom Cordova Unified School
District (FCUSD) for their secondary education. These are students who are capable of outshining
each other with their own unique and various ways. There are students who simply want to
graduate. Then, there are also students who are unsure and unconfident about their paths however
aiming for high educations. Lastly, there are students who are vigorously passionate and confident
aiming for the pinnacle. FCUSD has done their best to optimize school curriculum and programs
that appeals to all types of students. The current curriculum is able to provide students proper
educationfollowed by the California Curriculum Instruction as well as help students who are
lacking behind better known as accelerated courses. The current curriculum is working, but is it
able to keep up with the fast moving stream of the reputable colleges? Can FCUSD further aid the
vigorously passionate and confident student aim for their academic career path by improving the
curriculum? Yes, FCUSD is capable of making a different academic acceleration program that
encourages outstanding high schoolstudents to learn academic subject outside conventional
education at a faster rate by means of available resources and/or online courses. The purpose of this
program is to give the opportunity for students who finds the conventional education too slow and

The Decision Tree Algorithms And Grows The Tree By...
This is a pedagogical algorithm, which extracts the rules in the form of decision trees. This is
similar to most of the decision tree algorithms and grows the tree by recursive partitioning. At
every step it stores a queue of leaves that can be further expanded to sub trees and this process is
repeated until a stopping condition is met. Traditional decision trees methods have a limited number
of training observations. So they only have fewer number of observations to decide upon the split
and leaf node class labels but on the other hand, Trepan re labels the original observations to the
classifications made by the network. And the relabeled data will be used for the treegrowing
process. Additionally it can also add extra data points by mimicking the behavior of the network.
It uses the network as an oracle to answer the classification queries about the newly generated data
points. This way it can make sure that whenever a split node or leaf node class decision is made
there are at least S_(min ) number of data points. Where S_(min )is a user specified number.
Whenever we generate new data points at any particular node, we have to make sure that they
satisfy all the constraints from root to the current node. One of the approach to distribute the data
points over a network is to employ uniform distribution, but Trepan takes into account the
distribution of data i.e. at each node it estimates the marginal distribution of data. If the data at the
input is continuous then it

The Cheesecake Factory has a four significant areas of code of conduct that is very important.
The first conduct is general standards of conduct is when the employee builds a relationship
amongst trust, loyalty, honesty, and responsibility within the company. The employee will have
the responsibility to follow the rules and procedures to uphold the company guidelines of interest
at all times. This is important because you will want to build and have that trust with your staff
members. The second conduct is compliance with laws every staff member need to comply with
the laws and rules of conduct regarding the form of harassment and other discriminatory
behavior, also there will be no form of drug or alcohol abuse. This is important because you

Mexican Americans During Ww2
The outbreak of World War II, led to many Mexican Americans to answer the call and join the
U.S. armed forces. Many Mexican Americans in the Southwestern states joined to social and
economic reasons, while others took advantage of wartime legislation that promised them
citizenship in exchange for service (Meier and Ribera, 160). Mexican Americans, primarily fought
in combat divisions, which many earned Medal of Honor, and there were less racial tensions
between Mexicans and Anglos, due to the army ranking system. Mexicans and Anglos, tossed aside
their racial views among each other and rather coordinated with each other in the war to accomplish
their primary goals. Mexican Americans came home, developing self esteem and confidence to

Injustice In Selma
Selma, directed by Ava DuVernay, is a depressingly relevant film. With protests over the murders
of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Antonio Martin, the subject of police brutality, specifically
targeted at black people and protesters, is extremely appropriate. The brutalities inflicted on
African Americans in the 1960 s are highly shocking, but it is the knowledge that citizens are still
being murdered by our police that truly hits the hardest. Director Ava DuVernay uses intimate
moments and talented actors to adeptly balance the moral lessons inherent to this story with the
humanization of the venerated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The film covers a fairly short period of
time during the year 1965; during this time period, Dr. King (played by David Oleyowo) was

This look into the inner life of King and his family adds another level of depth and contrast to the
story, giving the viewer something to empathize with. This sense of empathy is crucial when
appealing to an audience in awe of Dr. King. Additionally, these personal family scenes have FBI
logs superimposed over them, a great touch that adds a certain insidiousness to these heartfelt
moments, the knowledge that their lives are in danger even from their government. David
Oleyowo s portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. is uncannily close to the real historical figure;
this is most apparent in the scenes of Dr. King giving a speech, as most of us have heard at least
one of King s speeches, giving us a point of comparison. Selma was nominated in the Best
Picture category at the Oscars, but in my opinion, Oleyowo was even more deserving of a
nomination in the Best Male Actor category. As a sidenote, the complete lack of people of color
nominated for acting awards in this year s Oscars is a travesty unto itself, but it is especially so in
my eyes after this movie. This film made it all the more apparent that there

The Current State Of Health Care System Essay
Introduction The current state of United States health care system is one of the most polarizing
subjects of debate among scholars and other health care professionals across the globe. This can
be attributed to the fact that at one extreme end, there are some who argue that that Americans
have the best system of health care in the world (MePhee, 2013). Perhaps the availability of the
state of the art facilities and free medical technology that have become highly symbolic of the
various industries in the United States have motivated the idea of the country s health care system
being unparalleled to others. However, there is a common belief that the fight for universal health
care can only be successful if its current state of health care is described as a failure in the modern
era as emphasized by MePhee (2013). As a matter of fact Wise and Yashiro, 2006 assert that there
some individuals who describe the America s system as being fragmented and inefficient,
considering the staggering statistics regarding how Americans spend more on health care compared
to other countries in the world. Additionally, they suffer from massive insurance costs and uneven
quality of care, and thus understanding the debate about the two diametrically opposed viewpoints
requires an in depth understanding of the current health care issues in the United States (Rashidian,
Joudaki, Vian, Baradaran, 2012). Essentially, this paper will identify one common health care issue,

foreign born outsiders, who can never fully realize a permanency of equal status as citizens (Ng

beyond a simple hierarchy with Whites on the highest level, Black people on the lowest, and other
groups in between (Kim 109).
Rather, we must consider race as a field of racial positions, which acknowledge superiority
/inferiority and insider/foreigner racializations, from which we can observe how Asian Americans
continue to be viewed as interlopers in a Black/White racial discourse through the intertwined
processes of relative valorization (Whites valorizing Asian Americans relative to Black people) and

When comparing the performance of Asian American participants on a mathematical examination
after having been positively stereotyped and without having been positively stereotyped, it was
found that the performance [on the test] was significantly lower in the ethnicity condition than in
the control condition (Cheryan 400). In the ethnicity salient condition, participants reported that
they had experienced significantly poorer ability to concentrate during the math task than did
participants in the control condition (444). Therefore, positive stereotypes, in the form of salient
social expectations, can place a considerable burden on stereotyped Asian Americans, adversely
affecting their performance in the stereotyped domain (401). That is, while Asian Americans can be
characterized as a high achieving model minority, this characterization can lead to agitation,
distraction, and lower self confidence, which ultimately contributes to poorer academic
performance. The study elucidates the mechanisms behind Asian American negative reactions to
positive stereotypes: failing to meet high expectations and the possibility that one s poor
performance may threaten the reputation of one s group engenders stifling performance pressures
when positive Asian stereotypes are initiated. As a result, positive stereotypes

Analysis Of Stripped For Parts By Jennifer Khan
Disruption of the Dead In the essay Stripped for Parts written, by Jennifer khan. The general
concept that is addressed is how morbid the process of harvesting dead peoples organs out of
their bodies. The way Khan starts the essay is by using a narrative approach. The narrative
approach helps express the emotion throughout her points she tries to bring up. She uses the story
of a dead old man lying on a table waiting for his organs to be taken out. Throughout this she goes
from giving examples of different doctors, professors, and other professionals. The thesis statement
that grabbed my attention the most is Compared with such micro scare cures, transplants which
consist of salvaging entire organs from a heart beating cadaver and sewing... Show more content on

The main emotion I felt while reading Khans paper was that I was shocked by the process organ
donors go through in their afterlives. It slightly made me angry at some moments as well. On
the first page when Khan brings up different points the one that made me interested was In the
movies, for instance, surgeons tended to say it would take time to find a heart as though one
had been hidden behind a tree or misplaced along with the car keys (123.) This was the point that
brought out the anger emotion that came upon me. The reason I used this quote the was
because she compared how surgeons took time to find these organs to having to find a pair of
keys that were lost, which are two very different concepts. This essay was also very shocking
considering how unaware I was of what a donor even meant. Eventually finding out that not
every organ works in the new host it is planted in. Even though it is not the major concept it
really helps convince the readers. When it is said Sustaining a dead body until its organs can be
harvested is a tricky process requiring the latest in medical technology (124.) This really puts it
into perspective for some readers from what is essentially going on. Also considering it is just
upsetting about how a dead person has had their whole entire lives and is just lying on a table
waiting to be dissected. This approach is added to Khan s essay for the sympathy

Analysis Of The Book In Brooklyn
In Brooklyn, the author, Colm ToМЃibiМЃn, tells a coming of age immigration story set in the
1950s about Eilis Lacey, a young woman from Enniscorthy, Ireland. Eilis travels from her
hometown in County Wexford to Brooklyn, New York with the help of Father Flood and her
sister, Rose. Eilis is confronted with homesickness, love, and identity crisis throughout the story.
Although Brooklyn is about Eilis s journey, Rose plays an important role in her life. Rose is Eilis
s older sister who still lives at home with Eilis and their mother. Rose helps support them with
money for food, movies, clothes and even Eilis s schooling by working in the office of Davis s
Mills. While in Brooklyn, Eilis and Rose send letters back and forth until Rose suddenly dies in
her sleep and leaves their mother all alone. Colm ToМЃibiМЃn s creates Rose to be the heroic
character of the novel. Initially Rose does seem manipulative but soon proves to be a hero. In this
essay I will argue that Rose is not completely manipulative, but that she is actually a combination
of both heroism and manipulation; she is a helpful person who sometimes uses manipulation to
achieve this. In the beginning of Brooklyn, Eilis gets a job as a shopkeeper for Miss Kelly s
grocery store and Rose disapproves of it. When Rose gets the opportunity to play golf with an
American priest, Father Flood, she invites him for tea. Eilis soon realizes that Rose tacitly arranged
for Father Flood to come to the house because she knew that

Tax Base Miami
Tax Base Miami MLA People living in Miami are in the face of danger, and for the most part
they are not aware of it. Due to high population, Miami is the fourth largest city to become
affected by sea level rise. (Ankum et al.) In the next 32 50 years, sea level is expected to rise by
as much as two feet. (Ankum et al.) This two foot rise will have detrimental effects on the urban
settings of Miami. The amount of soil erosion that is undergoing at our beaches will greatly
increase if a two foot rise occurs. At a four foot rise, road connectivity would begin to become
affected. At a six foot rise, Southern Floridawould no longer be habitable as it would, for the most
part, be underwater. Not much is being invested in mitigation efforts, most of what is being done
are short term solutions. Instead of coming up with ideas to prevent and try to slow down the
effects of climate change on our environment, we are focusing on ideas such as building up a sea
wall, relocating power plants, and redesigning structures. Climate isn t the only thing changing,
our environments are changing too. Our lakes are becoming polluted and eutrophic (Scavia et
al.), which causes the overgrowth of algae and death of many of the species found within the
lakes. Here in Miami, water has an important role in the value of housing by real estate buyers.

around a neighborhood devoid of water sources and the

The next step is to do tests on the brain itself to rule out other possible conditions. Doctors will
often do a CT scan first, then an MRI, and possibly a PET scan; these tests will show
abnormalities of the brain, and they will help rule out tumors, clots, or if the patient has had a
stroke. The CT provides a clear, two dimensional image of the brain that shows abnormalities such
as brain tumors, blood clots, strokes, or damage due to head injury (Hill 2008). This procedure is
painless, and nothing is inserted on, or into your head. The patient is fully awake during the
procedure.
An MRI uses computer generated radio waves and a strong magnetic field to produce a detailed
image of the brain. MRIs are helpful in the diagnosis of tumors, eye diseases, infections,
inflammation, and damage due to head injury (Hill 2008). When getting an MRI, you lay on a
table that slides into a tube, and they use computer generated radio waves and a very strong
magnetic field to see images of the brain. This test will allow the doctor to see two and three
dimensional images of your brain.
The PET scan also will show two and three dimensional images of the brain; however, the PET
scan measures brain activity. This is done by injecting radioactive isotopes into the blood stream.

the spreading activation. Twelve undergraduate students from Texas A M participated. Some of the
trails consisted of two related words and some consisted of two unrelated words. Two main effects

Memory storage implies putting that information into either short term or long term memory.
Sensory memory is another type of memory but since it is less than one second memory storage
has no use. Short term and long term memory decide whether we are able to retrieve the
information or not (Mastin, 2010).
Sensory and short term memory is less than one minute of storage and because of that they have
no use for explicit and implicit memory. Both are found and used to breakdown long term memory.
Explicit memory is the use of conscious thinking for the use of recall of important facts or events.
Implicit memory is the opposite; it is the use of unconscious thinking of information and reaction.
For example, texting, walking, or writing, on does not simply stop to think how to preform those
actions (McLeod, 2007).
To further breakdown explicit and implicit memory we use declarative and procedural memory.
Declarative memory corresponds with explicit memory because it engages in conscious thinking to
recall factual information. Procedural memory corresponds with implicit memory because it is the

Congo Imperialism Essay
Colonial rule in the Congo started in 1908 when King Leopold II of Belgium had the government
support colonial expansion, known as Imperialism, in the unexplored Congo Basin. King Leopold
II colonized Congo himself, with support from many other Western Countries, making the Congo
Free State. The Congo Free State is recognition for a personal colony, in this case Belgium
colonizing the Congo in 1885. However, violence from free state officials on native cologonese
peoples put a large amount of diplomatic pressure on Belgium to take control of the country. This
was done by King Leopold also in 1908 when he created the Belgian Congo officially and
lawfully. Rule by Belgians in the Congo was based on the colonial trinity of state, missionary...

Julius Caesar Polonius Quotes
At the end of act III scene 3, Claudius decides to send Hamlet off to England because of his
strange behavior. Claudius could have done this earlier in the play, which would have made it hard
for Hamlet to find out that Claudius murdered King Hamlet. But he only chooses to do this now. I
think this goes to show Claudius s bad judgment and his arrogance. He seemed to think that Hamlet
would never find out about the murder and that s why he kept him close. In addition, it is
interesting to see how stubborn Poloniusis. Even after eavesdropping in on the conversation
between Hamlet and Ophelia, he still believes that Hamlet s madness is caused by Ophelia
leaving him. He is so set on his opinion, and I wonder if this trait of his is going to play a larger
role in the future. Also, shouldn t Polonius get his head cut off for being wrong?
In the beginning of act III scene 2, I found it interesting that Polonius mentioned that he use to act
when he was at the university. He said I did enact Julius Caesar. I was killed i th Capitol. Brutus
killed me (III, ii, 109 110). Although I have not read Julius Caesar, this seems to be a... Show more

I think this goes to show that Hamlet s madness is his acting and not his actual madness. In the
previous scene, Hamlet was yelling at Ophelia about how women deceive men and how there
shouldn t be marriage. But in this scene, when he finds out that Claudius murdered King Hamlet,
he is pretty calm. This shows that Hamlet is able to control his emotions and temper, which most
likely suggests his madness is acted. Now that we know Hamlet s madness is an act, it is
important to find out why he is acting mad. Does it contribute to his plan to kill Claudius? It doesn t
seem likely because his madness is causing Claudius to send him away, which prevents him from
killing Claudius. It ll be interesting to see how the madness factors into his plan for

Key steps that a company should take, like The Cheesecake Factory could take in order to
guarantee the employees follow the code of conduct. First step is to have a customer service
department that takes care of all problems and investigates code of conduct issues. Another step
that The Cheesecake Factory can take to make sure the employees follow the code of conduct is
to have all employees sign the code of conduct when hired and to make sure the employees have a

Bond, 1997). While, in general, larger loans are positively correlated to increased interest rates,
more collateral, and a stronger credit rating of the borrower (Melnik Plaut, 1986), these factors
were not evident here.
In a typical commercial loan arrangement, equipment, real estate, accounts receivable or
inventories are normally offered as collateral (Chan Kanatas, 1985). Due to the covenants already

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a generic, lethal condition characterized by an inability to will

are deficient and loss of usage in voluntary muscles results in their atrophy. Characterized early in
life, children with SMA exhibit difficulty in early voluntary muscular activities such as crawling,

children younger than six months, SMA II for children between 6 18 months of age, and SMA III

Genetics of Spinal Muscular Atrophy
In 1995 a French group of researchers discovered that SMA is autosomal recessive disorder due to
loss of the survival motor neuron protein gene (SMN) (Lefebvre et al., 1995). Through
experimentation the researchers discovered two copies of the SMN gene in chromosome five [chr
5q13.2]: telomeric and centromeric SMN copies. Experimentation proved that loss of the
telomeric SMN (today known as SMN1) and not loss of its centromeric counterpart, SMN2,
resulted in SMA. It took an additional six years for researchers to glimpse at the functions
provided by SMN1. Meister et al. categorized the SMN1 protein an essential to promote correct
assembly of U12 small ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs). In genetics, snRNPs are nucleic proteins
responsible for the splicing of premature ribonucleic acid chains (pre mRNA) derived from genes.
Without correct splicing, mature ribonucleic acid chains (mRNAs) produce dysfunctional proteins
when translated. In this case, splicing functionality of U12 intron containing transcripts is lost, and
because the transcript is wrongly coded, its translation will produce a functionless protein. Hence,
loss of SMN1 results in an inability form U12 snRNPs splicing complexes, and reduced splicing
functionality results in loss of U12 intron splicing functionality (Patel and Steitz, 2003). Only
recently (2012) did researchers

The Effects Of Smoking On Public Places
There are many controversial topics on the minds of Americans today such as abortion, the use of
handguns, and one of the most controversial topics, which is smoking in public places. The
history of smoking can be dated to as early as 5000 BC and has been recorded in many different
cultures across the world. According to the History Channel, When Christopher Columbus arrived
in 1492, he observed Native Americans smokingtobacco. They actually used it to insert their cigars
into their nostrils to smoke. Columbus took tobacco back to Europe because of its addictive
nature; it soon became very valuable. Once tobacco was introduced into Europe, tobacco started to
grow in many parts of the world. For instance, tobacco was introduced into France, Portugal, Spain,
and England. At one time, tobacco leaves were actually used as currency; therefore, tobacco
companies turned smoking into a multi billion dollar death machine, yet some people refers
tobacco as an American plant. It is estimated that there are more than 43 million adults who
currently smoke in the United States, 15% of the 43 million people that smoke in the United State
started smoking as a teenager, says the American CancerSociety. Smoking should be banned from
public place because of secondhand smoking, littering problems, and lasting odors. Smoking can
affect every person around them. One main reason smoking should be banned is because of

Mccaslin Interruptions Poem
Interruptions and the Mindful Moment: McCaslin s Interruptions
In a busy and production oriented society, interruptions are generally seen as irritating, rude and
unnecessary moments that should be avoided at all costs. However, in Interruptions , Susan
McCaslin wants the reader to consider that living in the gaps between thought and conversation, in
the interruptions of life, is how one can often see what is truly happening in the present around us.
Using the rhetorical pattern of contrast as well as direction, the unexpected, natural imagery and
words about language, McCaslin seeks to demonstrate the value of interruptions by understanding
them as the gaps in life where the opportunities for mindfulness and creativity lie.
The first stanza of McCaslin s Interruptions begins by giving the reader the direction that is the
backbone of the poem s theme: in other words, the reader must grow accustomed to the
interruptions in life so that the chance for mindfulness can occur. She then uses an unexpected
subversion and natural imagery to begin building the contrasts where the interruptions in the poem
develop. McCaslin directs the reader to Get used to them , beginning a series of commands to the
reader to accept interruptions in every day life. She subverts the idea of a traditional male
Abrahamic god, transforming the God she s discussing into a woman. This unexpected turn disrupts
the poem itself, an example of the interruptions she s heeding the reader to [g]et

Letters from a Birmingham Jail Essay
Letters from a Birmingham Jail
Aristotle is a very citable man when it comes to the way we think today. His rhetoric techniques
are still being used in today s society. The Neo Aristotelian Criticism is three different appeals of
persuasion. This is ethos, pathos and logos, which makes one heck of a convincing argument. Ethos
gives credibility, pathos shows emotion and logos uses words. In the text, Letter from Birmingham
Jail, we find many examples of the criticism. Martin Luther King Jr. is writing a letter from inside
the jail of Birmingham in April of 1963. This letter King wrote was in response to a letter he
received from the religious leaders after King is making a stand against the racial issues in
Alabama. These leaders ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
has a sense of right and wrong under a religious point of view. King goes on to talk about how this
affiliation is across the south and this goes to show the ethics, because these eighty five groups
who believe the same thing, can t be wrong for what they believe in.
On the fifth page of the text, King gives an example of Adolf Hitler and what he did was legal in
Germany. Hitler was the maker of his own rules for his country, and due to his status didn t
make his actions correct. At that time I m sure there were those who came against Hitler and
were punished for it, just as King was being punished for his stand. Ethics is based on societies
views as right and wrong, not on what is written down in black and white. Today as we look at
history we see that Hitler was wrong for what did, and we see King was right for wanting a better
nation for everyone including African Americans.
Top of the seventh page is another great example of ethos in this letter. Martin Luther King Jr.
makes reference to Jesus, Amos, Paul, Martin Luther, John Bunyan, Abraham Lincoln and
Thomas Jefferson for all being an extremist. King views himself as an extremist for equality. I
think King first makes note of naming Jesus to refer back to the bases of the clergymen s
religion. All these men that he names were men who stood alone in someway for what they
believed in. They all stood for what was right according to what we see today, but not at the time
they made a move.

Australia s Constitutional Democracy And The Federal System
Throughout this essay, a comparison of both Australia s constitutional democracy and the federal
republic system in the United States will take place. Australia and the United States are both a part
of the federal system. Within the federal system, the national and state governments divide the
power in order to govern (Parliamentary Education Office, 2016). Both Australiaand the United
Stateshave two chambers, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Parliament Education
office, (2016) states that there are numerous similarities between these two countries, for example,
both these nations decide on the making of legal guidelines for their government. However,
Australia and the United States have different forms of government and this affects how the
political system is managed. Australia is a constitutional monarchy, in which the queen is the head
of the state (ABC, 2004), and the United States is the federal republic where the President is the
head of state (Parliamentary Education Office, 2016). A constitution is a formal structure for the
state and specifies the power and institutions of the central government and its relationship with
different levels. Additionally, it expresses the rights of citizens and creates limits on the
government (Hague Harrop, 2013). In a republic government, the people and their elected
representative have the power and there may be an elected or nominated president (Stevenson,
2010). A constitutional democracy and the federal republic

Types Of Big Data And Large Data
Big data is a term used to define the amount of data, structures and unstructured, so huge that
traditional data base managements techniques are rendered useless and the storage and analytics
of this data pose a problem. There are various types of big data and big data can be defined in four
Vs, which are: Volume, Velocity, Variety and Veracity. The problem is solved by Google
Distributed
File System, an application that google created for it s own use to automatically store data.
With the amount of big data multiplying every minute, technologies like cloud computing came
into picture, in many, Hadoop is one which stands out. Hadoop is an open source platform where
big data can be stored, managed and even used. Organisations like Amazon and LinkedIn use the
Hadoop framework to connect to it s customers.
Another new technology is MapReduce. MapReduce maps the input data and provides it to the
user as output in a reduced form due to the clusters of computers working in parallel to individually
process the data.
With the further growth of data more technologies will be explored and if we assume if things
proceed as they are doing, there will be time soon when we won t even have to look for jobs. The
right job for our capabilities will be offered to us by comprehending us on our IQ, our likes and
dislikes, our nature, hobbies, etc.

The Nazis didn t get much get much opposition because the punishment was so server for people

Propaganda helped to prevent opposition to the nazis, by playing speeches over and over again
on the radio it kind of brainwashed people into think that the nazis were good and powerful also
having children learn about the nazis would help influence there parents into believing the nazis.
Also having smartly dressed SS soldiers parading in the street heavily armed, may have put some
people off of opposing the nazis and maybe seeing people being seriously beaten up even killed
may have put tem off too.
Other methods of controlling opposition was the SS and the Gestapo, they would go around
towns and beat up or arrest people who were assumed to be opposing the nazis. People were, this
way, scared of the storm troopers and were scared of saying anything offensive about the nazi party.
In the work place to stop trade unions they had spies who would listen out for people planning up

Burke s Nakedness Of Adam And Eve
Burke identifies a norm of a naked expulsion of Adam and Eve beginning by 1500, which
contradicts the biblical account God made coats of skins and clothed them before forced to leave
the Garden of Eden. According to Burke, until about the early 15th century, all Italian iconography
of Adam and Eve expulsions were fully clothed or with covered genitalia. Afterwards, Adam and
Evewere shown to be fully naked post expulsion from the Garden as seen in Masaccio s infamous
Expulsion from Paradise (1423). Burke s ultimate observation on Adam and Eve s portrayal of
nakedness after being expelled from Eden is that it serves a purpose beyond the fall of man. An
array of various classical texts, Vitruvius On Architecture (c. 15th), Diodorus Library of History

The Causes And Consequences Of Low Birth Weight
The Causes and Consequences of Low Birth Weight
Low Birth rate is defined by the World health Organization as a baby weighing under 2,499
grams or less regardless of gestational age. (WHO) This is a Prominent issue in our world today
because on average 30 million low birth weight babies are born every year. There are many factors
that can causes low birth weight such as premature birth, substances that affect the mother s health,
father s support, stress, the mothers age and race, and insufficient prenatal care. Low birth weight is
important to prevent and treat because it can lead multiple life threatening consequences, some of
which can remain with the child for life.
Pre mature birth is the number one cause of low birth weight in the United States. A baby is
considered pre mature if they are delivered before the thirty seventh week of pregnancy. This occurs
when the mother goes into labor to early. This can become very dangerous for the baby because
it had less time to develop in the womb leading to developmental issues. Symptoms of premature
birth include a large head in comparison to the body size, respiratory distress, trouble
maintaining body heat, eye damage. There are three types of pre term are Extremely preterm a
child born less than 28 weeks, very preterm born between 28 to 32 weeks, and moderate to late
preterm born between 32 to 37 weeks.

Hatice Ezberk
The article by Hatice Ezberk The Function of Fantasy as a subversive Genre in Literature examines
the idea of how fantastic literature can bring out an emphasis on how the world transforms through
the writers eyes. As fantasy literature grows it can become unclear as to what social norms the
literature is trying to juxtapose. Ezberk argues that trying to categorize fantasyliterature is a
rebellious act as the subgenre s become too specific and can at times deceive the reader by
delivering functions it is not meant to deliver. Ezberk argues through other works by establishing
that the concept of realism is not valid in fantasy literature as it becomes too vague. Instead
fantasy literature takes the reader away from a world they know and into a world where it is heart
desire to be. The concept of subversive literature is that it gives a reader encouragement to think
creatively while reading and to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

document control. Instead of issuing ammunition via a TAMIS generated document number, BSRF

complex and unnecessary. Having two document numbers for the same transaction limits the unit s

Essay On Kevin Salmon
Kevin Salmon is a Sous Chef at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, a Sous Chef is the second
highest position a person can have in a kitchen, the position being under an Executive Chef most
directly compares to an Assistant Manager. For lack of information about Kevin s regular
schedule we are going to base this day off of one preparing for a convention, which he does on a
fairly regular basis, so it is pretty accurate. Kevin would most likely get to work at 8 in the
morning, when he arrived he would walk around the kitchen make sure everything is all ready for
the day and that his staff is getting started. Once he has done that he would probably have a
meeting with the Executive Chefand a few other people, other high up kitchen staff and the people

Being that this is such a long and tedious step, everyone including Kevin will be putting in 12
hour days from 8 am to 8 pm, sometimes even longer just to make sure the event turns out
perfect. That is what a day in the life of Kevin Salmon looks like: long, tiring, and chaotic, so just
because of that this job is definitely not for everyone. To be a chef like Kevin is, you would need
to have extreme passion and dedication towards cooking, because to get to the place that he is at
he put in many years of his time and effort, starting at the bottom and working his way up. Kevin
says that I stayed in this field because I fell in love with what I do and love how it makes me feel .

Angela Carter And Traditional Fairy Tales
Angela Carter was one of the most important writers among the contemporary British literary
arena. In 1966, she published her first book Shadow Dance, after that, she published The Magic
Toyshop which revealed Carter s fascination with fairy tales. As for The Bloody Chamber and
Other Stories, it is a short storycollection that I m going to analyze in this essay. Carter, as the
supporter of the feminist movement, many of her works was rewritten from the western fairytales.
And she believes that traditional fairy tales maintain and extend the dominant values in a
patriarchal society, and these are the machines for the ideological control of patriarchal society and
are powerful tools for restraining and repressing children, especially females. Thus,... Show more

In western culture, fairy tale is an ancient literary form with simple plot and character setting. In
Oxford Advanced Leaner s English Dictionary, fairy tale is definite as a story about magic and
fairies, usually for children. Fairy tales play an important role in western society which is
regarded as next to the Bible in importance. They are necessary and essential to continue the
cultural customs and values passed down from one generation to another generation. There are
three distinctive features of traditional fairy tales. Firstly, nearly in all the fairy tales, men are
active and dominant; in contrast, women are passive and submissive. Fairy tales are male
dominated, while female is often placed secondary to male, which corresponds to the expectations
about the two sexes in patriarchal society. Secondly, the complexity of human nature is often
simplified in fairy tales. Thirdly, in fairy tales, the story is generally told by an

Music And Its Effect On People Essay
There have always been significant uses of music in particular background situations to create
desired effects on people. Retail stores use music to increase spending, employers use specific
types of music to ease their employees, and doctors use soothing music to help relax their tense
patients. Teachers come across numerous challenges within their classrooms when it comes to the
distractions that students encounter. It may be behavior which is distracting, such as doing
something not class related, or it may be behavior that is interruptive and intentionally disruptive.
Not all students can come to school with a fresh start that allows them to be ready and willing to
learn. Still, society expects educators to teach all students and for all students to learn in the same
ways. Studies have shown that music can be an efficient tool for resolving some of these barricades
of the learningprocess. When music is suitably used as a background enhancer, the student s ability
to concentrate within the classroom setting increases.
As the classroom setting has advanced and progressed over time, teachers now have an opportunity
to enrich learning further than before. There are various approaches a teacher can positively use to
affect the productivity, behavior, and motivation of students. One of the specific strategies now
commonly used to boost student learning is the use of background music. Background music is not
actively or purposely listened to, but intended to be heard.

Domestic Violence And Public Violence Essay
Approximately 12 million people in the United States are affected by domestic violence. There are
8.8 million children who will witness domestic violence. Half of all victims of domestic violence
will also experience the unimaginable pain of their child/children being abused alongside them. The
fact is, domestic violencewill affect or touch every person in their lifetime (Pence McMahon,
1999). There are many ground breaking advocates of reducing domestic violence, though one
stands out above the others. Ellen Pence helped build the foundation of batterer programming
with the Duluth program. The program forged new ground and bridged the concerns of
advocates and criminal justice officials by developing its Power and Control Wheel from women
s experiences with abuse (Zorza, 1998). Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she earned her BA from
the College of St Scholastica in Duluth and a PhD from the University of Toronto. Her mother
inspired her to be an activist and, as a young woman, Ellen became involved in anti war, civil rights
and homelessness issues. In 1975 she joined the feminist movement against domestic violence, and
five years later she moved to Duluth, where, with a group of friends, she came up with the Duluth
model (Schechter Ganley, 1995).
During this time, domestic violence was considered a private matter, not an issue for community or
state intervention. The birthplace of that revolution was Duluth, Minnesota. It was there that she,

Jorge Luis Borges
The Art of Being Ambiguous In his collection of short stories, Ficciones, Jorge Luis Borges uses
dreams, imagination and fantasy to establish ambiguity in his stories. With the use of juxtaposition
and symbols, Borges blends a realm of dreams and imagination into the individual s everyday
worldly experiences. Through these devices, Borges commonly blurs the line between aspects of
reality for his characters versus the constructs of his or her mind. By combining the real with the
fictitious, Borges incorporates ambiguity into his stories and introduces his readers to new
perspectives of world around them. In The South, Borges establishes ambiguity by dropping subtle
textual hints that would ultimately allow for the reader to attain... Show more content on

By juxtaposing Hladik s reality and the play he has constructed in his mind, Borges introduces
the overarching idea of how the mind constitutes for a different realm in which the dreamers and
thinkers can shape, share, and confide in. This idea is again prominent when the bullet that is
intended to kill Hladik on the day of his execution stops seconds before taking him. Borges states
that, in Hladik s mind a year would pass between the order of the fire and the discharge of the
rifle (162) as a result of God. If taken at face value, God has intervened as promised in Hladik s
dream. If the reader was to interpret this story in this manner, it is clear that events from Hladik
s dream transform and impact his reality. In which case, Borges clouds the distinction between
Hladik s reality and dreams. However, oddly enough, when Hladik requests the assistance of God
in a dream the night before, the librarian states I myself have gone blind searching for it [God]
(161), indicating that presence of God is questionable at most. If God is not yet found, He could
not have given Hladik the extra year. By incorporating these subtle hints, Borges also allows the
reader to interpret that it was solely Hladik s perception of time, rather than the intervention of God,
that allowed him another

regret of a young mother struggling to raise her oldest daughter. The mother daughter relationship
is the major part of the story and the attitude of the mother toward her daughter, Emily, and the
actual character of the mother are two very important elements. The character of the mother can be
said to be strong and persevering, and along with her age and experience came her wisdom. At first
her attitude toward her daughter seemed more of resigned and regretful, but as Emily grew up and

How Did W B Yeats Contribution To Irish Nationalism
The aim of this thesis is to concentrate on those poems of W.B. Yeats which deal with Irish
Nationalism. His poems intimately connect history and literature. The MLA 7th edition format has
been used in writing this thesis.
Nationalism is a doctrine invented in Europe in the beginning of the nineteenth century. It pretends
to supply the criterion for the determination of the unit of population proper to enjoy a government
exclusively of its own, for the legitimate exercise of power in the state for the rights, organization,
of a society, of states. Briefly, the doctrine holds that humanity is naturally divided into nations, that
nations are known by certain characteristics which can be ascertained, and that the only legitimate
type of government is national self government. (Kedourie 9) The nation state is the focus of
nationalism. Nationalism is a sentiment and an ideology. Nationalist sentiment means giving
primacy to national interest above all interests. Nationalist ideology may be defined as a desire of
a group people living in a particular geographical area to become an independent nation by evolving
their own language, symbol, flag and declaring national festivals, and people living in that area
following these rules. It is about loyalty towards the nation and if the nation is under colonial rule
then the national movement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

his writings he tried to revive a sense of pride among the people of Ireland. He wanted Irish
literature to have its unique place among the literature of other languages. During his youth, he
wrote poems to arouse nationalistic feelings, to revive a glorious past and heroic days and to
protest against the atrocities inflicted on the Irishmen by the British. But later on, due to bitter
experiences, he became a realist and his poetry was patriotic but universal in theme. His view of

Counter-Culture Youth Pic Essay
In the following essay, I will attempt to highlight the phenomenon in cinema known as the
counterculture youth pic. This trend in production started in the late 1960 s as a result of the
economic and cultural influences on the film industry of that time. The following essay looks at
how those influences helped to shape a new genre in the film industry, sighting Easy Rider as a
main example, and suggests some possible reasons for the relatively short popularity of the genre.
The standard story of the counterculture begins with an account of the social order against which it
rebelled, a social order that was known to just about everyone by 1960 as the mass society. The tale
of post war malaise and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following the beatnik movement of the late 1950 s a number of young people, embracing some of
the same ideas, congregated in San Diego s Haight suburb. But it was not necessarily just the youth
of the day that were part of this social rejection.
The last half of the 1960 s saw the emergence of seemingly new cultures among young people,
which were promptly collapsed under the label youth culture by adults. Even so, these cultures
were neither entirely novel, nor limited to young people, nor so homogeneous as to be described
by one label. (Grans, Comparative Analysis)
Part of what made this movement so distinguishable at the time was the rebellion against the
fashion industry, as well as social norms. It was relatively easy to pick out which people
sympathized with the movement, especially with the characteristic male look of the Jesus Christ
hair and beard. They dressed to highlight their freakiness, combining clothes of other times and
cultures.
Davy Crockett buckskin, military surplus, Buddhist robes, Edwardian suits, Errol Flynn pirate
shirts, native American headbands, capes, cowboy and Beatle boots, hats bowlers, stove top,
cowboy, Eskimo, anything and beads, of course. (Echols, Shaky Ground)
It was not only the social values and fashion trends that were experimented with. This period in
history also saw a large rise in drug usage.

  • 2. The Media And The Stereotypes Of Women In The Media Every day, millions of Americans view the front covers of magazines like Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and more. They see them while at grocery stores, on the television, and even in the waiting room at a doctor s office. The media offer advertisements with models that are seemingly slim with perfect skin, hair, and teeth. American propaganda leaves most young, adolescent girls between the ages of 5 18 to consider that the complexity of beauty is strict to be thin and perfect, though it is targeted to young adolescents, it does aim towards older femaleand male age ranges as well. An article states, While the media attempt to target every person, the level of exposure is dictated by gender, and the majority of harmful messages is focused more toward women. For instance, in media such as magazines where a person relies on an image to relate a feeling, girls are often made to look inferior (Chapman). When it comes to the media, specifically in the American culture, the popularity has massively increased over the years, turning to new weekly issues, becoming common to the society and civilization. This causes issues associated with eating disorders, depression and suicide, and self esteem/confidence young girls. Young girls in middle high school look in the mirror to analyze, critique and judge the growing woman that they see in the mirror. Overall, they seem to dislike what they see, Most think my body is not perfect. . That brings the question of what exactly a perfect body is? ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If so, he says, You may be outscored but you will never lose. This quote from Carol Dweck (Professor of Psychology at Stanford University) has inspired me the way I go about in my life. The belief in continuous learning with the optimistic approach towards hard work, learning and doggedness has always been my motivation. Product Warning Labels and Protection Against Liability Lawsuits We have all purchased a new consumer product with several labels, stickers, and product inserts containing warnings, disclaimers and oversimplified directions. The warnings can actually be humorous at times as illustrated in the following examples: В· On Sears hair dryer: Do not use while sleeping В· On Marks Spencer Bread Pudding: Product will be hot after heating. В· On Rowenta Iron: Do not iron clothes on body. В· On Nytol (a sleep aid): Warning: May cause drowsiness. В· On a Swedish chainsaw: Do no attempt to stop chainsaw with your hands. Are people drying their hair while sleeping or ironing clothes while wearing them foreseeable risks? As lawsuits become more outrageous, so do the warnings and there is an outcry for reform in our civil justice system to minimize frivolous lawsuits. According to a poll conducted by Nation s Business magazine (February, 1998) 2/3 of the businesses that responded had been named as defendants in product liability lawsuits. An overwhelming majority felt that frivolous lawsuits are definitely a problem and that people who file lawsuits (should) pay the defendant s legal fees if they lose . Eighty percent were in favor of a federal law being enacted to supersede conflicting state laws on the liability of a company if someone using it s product is injured . Courts use a risk/utility analysis to determine whether the risks associated with certain inherently unsafe products are reasonable. To make the determination, courts weigh the availability of safer alternatives and whether the risks of using the product outweigh that product s utility. The myriad of lawsuits against tobacco companies certainly raise this issue to a point of controversy. Do the warning labels placed on cigarettes and tobacco products preclude most personal injury claims against the manufacturers? In a recent case brought against R. J. Reynolds, an ex smoker suffering from terminal cancer was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Airline Ticket Prices Is The Foundation Of All Economic... Supply and demand, together, are the foundation of all economic ventures. Airline ticket prices are determined by the demand for travelers and the marginal cost of filling the seats; thus generating supply. The interception of supply and demand is where business is generated. This interception of the airlines pricing curves is indicated at their equilibrium point where there s neither a surplus nor a shortage. Why can an airlineticket from Casper, Wyoming to Denver, Colorado, and from Denver, Colorado to Orlando, Florida cost the same? Does this make economic sense? Where and when tickets are purchased affects the bottom line price the consumer pays. Price and value are extremely important in economicsthus; the effect of supply and demand, affects the overall cost of the ticket. Goals of Pricing Airline ticket prices can vary from day to day, from airline to airline; with the most important variable being competition. Industry pricing for a market of such a magnitude is a micro , and macro economic decision. Its affects will in turn effect the entire economy of the industry. We all know that when shopping for the cheapest price for an airline ticket, depending on various factors, Seaney (2011) you will pay hundreds of dollars more, or less, than the passenger seated right next to you. That being, the airlines primary goal is to maximize profit(s) on every seat, on every plane, on every route. This is the result of supply, demand, and price curve working cohesively ... • 6. The Discovery Of The Formation Of Hotspots Davies (2009) states hot spots can be described as irregularly spaced areas within the mantle that do not correspond with any plate tectonic processes. It was thought 50 years ago high temperatures were found at hot spots, so rocks within the region were liquefied to create molten magma, resulting in the term hot spot volcanos . The accepted theory for the formation of hotspots was put forward by Geophysicist John Tuzo Wilson in 1963, who specified the Earth has areas of fixated magma plumes deep within the mantle that have been created from intense radioactivity in the Earth s interior (Foulger, 2003). As demonstrated in figure one the Earth s crust passes over the mantle, the magma plume forces the boiling magma up through the Earth s crust where the hot spot remains until the tectonic plate passes over it and the boiling lava creates a series of new volcanoes, like the Hawaiian Islands (Davies, 2009). Although this concept is easy to accept due to it leaving room for further research and hotspots appearing to have a deep source, alternative hypotheses have since been argued to challenge the theory, as the accepted hypothesis was created long before scientific evidence was available. For example, there were discoveries such as hotspots not actually being high in temperature or being fixated relative to one another (Stein et al, 2003). An example of contradictory evidence is the Canary Islands; the island of Fuerteventura aged 23 MA lies closer to the ridge than the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Decision Tree Algorithms And Grows The Tree By... This is a pedagogical algorithm, which extracts the rules in the form of decision trees. This is similar to most of the decision tree algorithms and grows the tree by recursive partitioning. At every step it stores a queue of leaves that can be further expanded to sub trees and this process is repeated until a stopping condition is met. Traditional decision trees methods have a limited number of training observations. So they only have fewer number of observations to decide upon the split and leaf node class labels but on the other hand, Trepan re labels the original observations to the classifications made by the network. And the relabeled data will be used for the treegrowing process. Additionally it can also add extra data points by mimicking the behavior of the network. It uses the network as an oracle to answer the classification queries about the newly generated data points. This way it can make sure that whenever a split node or leaf node class decision is made there are at least S_(min ) number of data points. Where S_(min )is a user specified number. Whenever we generate new data points at any particular node, we have to make sure that they satisfy all the constraints from root to the current node. One of the approach to distribute the data points over a network is to employ uniform distribution, but Trepan takes into account the distribution of data i.e. at each node it estimates the marginal distribution of data. If the data at the input is continuous then it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many Mexican Americans in the Southwestern states joined to social and economic reasons, while others took advantage of wartime legislation that promised them citizenship in exchange for service (Meier and Ribera, 160). • 11. Injustice In Selma Selma, directed by Ava DuVernay, is a depressingly relevant film. With protests over the murders of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Antonio Martin, the subject of police brutality, specifically targeted at black people and protesters, is extremely appropriate. The brutalities inflicted on African Americans in the 1960 s are highly shocking, but it is the knowledge that citizens are still being murdered by our police that truly hits the hardest. Director Ava DuVernay uses intimate moments and talented actors to adeptly balance the moral lessons inherent to this story with the humanization of the venerated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The film covers a fairly short period of time during the year 1965; during this time period, Dr. King (played by David Oleyowo) was directly... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This look into the inner life of King and his family adds another level of depth and contrast to the story, giving the viewer something to empathize with. This sense of empathy is crucial when appealing to an audience in awe of Dr. King. Additionally, these personal family scenes have FBI logs superimposed over them, a great touch that adds a certain insidiousness to these heartfelt moments, the knowledge that their lives are in danger even from their government. David Oleyowo s portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. is uncannily close to the real historical figure; this is most apparent in the scenes of Dr. King giving a speech, as most of us have heard at least one of King s speeches, giving us a point of comparison. Selma was nominated in the Best Picture category at the Oscars, but in my opinion, Oleyowo was even more deserving of a nomination in the Best Male Actor category. As a sidenote, the complete lack of people of color nominated for acting awards in this year s Oscars is a travesty unto itself, but it is especially so in my eyes after this movie. This film made it all the more apparent that there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Current State Of Health Care System Essay Introduction The current state of United States health care system is one of the most polarizing subjects of debate among scholars and other health care professionals across the globe. This can be attributed to the fact that at one extreme end, there are some who argue that that Americans have the best system of health care in the world (MePhee, 2013). Perhaps the availability of the state of the art facilities and free medical technology that have become highly symbolic of the various industries in the United States have motivated the idea of the country s health care system being unparalleled to others. However, there is a common belief that the fight for universal health care can only be successful if its current state of health care is described as a failure in the modern era as emphasized by MePhee (2013). As a matter of fact Wise and Yashiro, 2006 assert that there some individuals who describe the America s system as being fragmented and inefficient, considering the staggering statistics regarding how Americans spend more on health care compared to other countries in the world. Additionally, they suffer from massive insurance costs and uneven quality of care, and thus understanding the debate about the two diametrically opposed viewpoints requires an in depth understanding of the current health care issues in the United States (Rashidian, Joudaki, Vian, Baradaran, 2012). Rather, we must consider race as a field of racial positions, which acknowledge superiority /inferiority and insider/foreigner racializations, from which we can observe how Asian Americans continue to be viewed as interlopers in a Black/White racial discourse through the intertwined processes of relative valorization (Whites valorizing Asian Americans relative to Black people) and civic ostracism (Whites othering Asian Americans... When comparing the performance of Asian American participants on a mathematical examination after having been positively stereotyped and without having been positively stereotyped, it was found that the performance [on the test] was significantly lower in the ethnicity condition than in the control condition (Cheryan 400). In the ethnicity salient condition, participants reported that they had experienced significantly poorer ability to concentrate during the math task than did participants in the control condition (444). Therefore, positive stereotypes, in the form of salient social expectations, can place a considerable burden on stereotyped Asian Americans, adversely affecting their performance in the stereotyped domain (401). That is, while Asian Americans can be characterized as a high achieving model minority, this characterization can lead to agitation, distraction, and lower self confidence, which ultimately contributes to poorer academic performance. The study elucidates the mechanisms behind Asian American negative reactions to positive stereotypes: failing to meet high expectations and the possibility that one s poor performance may threaten the reputation of one s group engenders stifling performance pressures when positive Asian stereotypes are initiated. The general concept that is addressed is how morbid the process of harvesting dead peoples organs out of their bodies. The way Khan starts the essay is by using a narrative approach. The narrative approach helps express the emotion throughout her points she tries to bring up. She uses the story of a dead old man lying on a table waiting for his organs to be taken out. Throughout this she goes from giving examples of different doctors, professors, and other professionals. The thesis statement that grabbed my attention the most is Compared with such micro scare cures, transplants which consist of salvaging entire organs from a heart beating cadaver and sewing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main emotion I felt while reading Khans paper was that I was shocked by the process organ donors go through in their afterlives. It slightly made me angry at some moments as well. On the first page when Khan brings up different points the one that made me interested was In the movies, for instance, surgeons tended to say it would take time to find a heart as though one had been hidden behind a tree or misplaced along with the car keys (123.) This was the point that brought out the anger emotion that came upon me. The reason I used this quote the was because she compared how surgeons took time to find these organs to having to find a pair of keys that were lost, which are two very different concepts. This essay was also very shocking considering how unaware I was of what a donor even meant. Eventually finding out that not every organ works in the new host it is planted in. Even though it is not the major concept it really helps convince the readers. When it is said Sustaining a dead body until its organs can be harvested is a tricky process requiring the latest in medical technology (124.) This really puts it into perspective for some readers from what is essentially going on. Also considering it is just upsetting about how a dead person has had their whole entire lives and is just lying on a table waiting to be dissected. Eilis travels from her hometown in County Wexford to Brooklyn, New York with the help of Father Flood and her sister, Rose. Eilis is confronted with homesickness, love, and identity crisis throughout the story. Although Brooklyn is about Eilis s journey, Rose plays an important role in her life. Rose is Eilis s older sister who still lives at home with Eilis and their mother. Rose helps support them with money for food, movies, clothes and even Eilis s schooling by working in the office of Davis s Mills. While in Brooklyn, Eilis and Rose send letters back and forth until Rose suddenly dies in her sleep and leaves their mother all alone. Colm ToМЃibiМЃn s creates Rose to be the heroic character of the novel. Initially Rose does seem manipulative but soon proves to be a hero. In this essay I will argue that Rose is not completely manipulative, but that she is actually a combination of both heroism and manipulation; she is a helpful person who sometimes uses manipulation to achieve this. In the beginning of Brooklyn, Eilis gets a job as a shopkeeper for Miss Kelly s grocery store and Rose disapproves of it. Due to high population, Miami is the fourth largest city to become affected by sea level rise. (Ankum et al.) In the next 32 50 years, sea level is expected to rise by as much as two feet. (Ankum et al.) This two foot rise will have detrimental effects on the urban settings of Miami. The amount of soil erosion that is undergoing at our beaches will greatly increase if a two foot rise occurs. At a four foot rise, road connectivity would begin to become affected. At a six foot rise, Southern Floridawould no longer be habitable as it would, for the most part, be underwater. Not much is being invested in mitigation efforts, most of what is being done are short term solutions. Instead of coming up with ideas to prevent and try to slow down the effects of climate change on our environment, we are focusing on ideas such as building up a sea wall, relocating power plants, and redesigning structures. Climate isn t the only thing changing, our environments are changing too. Our lakes are becoming polluted and eutrophic (Scavia et al.), which causes the overgrowth of algae and death of many of the species found within the lakes. Doctors will often do a CT scan first, then an MRI, and possibly a PET scan; these tests will show abnormalities of the brain, and they will help rule out tumors, clots, or if the patient has had a stroke. The CT provides a clear, two dimensional image of the brain that shows abnormalities such as brain tumors, blood clots, strokes, or damage due to head injury (Hill 2008). This procedure is painless, and nothing is inserted on, or into your head. The patient is fully awake during the procedure. An MRI uses computer generated radio waves and a strong magnetic field to produce a detailed image of the brain. MRIs are helpful in the diagnosis of tumors, eye diseases, infections, inflammation, and damage due to head injury (Hill 2008). Memory storage implies putting that information into either short term or long term memory. Sensory memory is another type of memory but since it is less than one second memory storage has no use. Short term and long term memory decide whether we are able to retrieve the information or not (Mastin, 2010). Sensory and short term memory is less than one minute of storage and because of that they have no use for explicit and implicit memory. Both are found and used to breakdown long term memory. Explicit memory is the use of conscious thinking for the use of recall of important facts or events. Implicit memory is the opposite; it is the use of unconscious thinking of information and reaction. For example, texting, walking, or writing, on does not simply stop to think how to preform those actions (McLeod, 2007). To further breakdown explicit and implicit memory we use declarative and procedural memory. Declarative memory corresponds with explicit memory because it engages in conscious thinking to recall factual information. Procedural memory corresponds with implicit memory because it is the basic repetition of facts that do not take much into consideration. Declarative memory is broken down in episodic and semantic memory. Episodic memory helps the retrieval of facts, events, or experiences in ones life. Genetics of Spinal Muscular Atrophy In 1995 a French group of researchers discovered that SMA is autosomal recessive disorder due to loss of the survival motor neuron protein gene (SMN) (Lefebvre et al., 1995). Through experimentation the researchers discovered two copies of the SMN gene in chromosome five [chr 5q13.2]: telomeric and centromeric SMN copies. Experimentation proved that loss of the telomeric SMN (today known as SMN1) and not loss of its centromeric counterpart, SMN2, resulted in SMA. It took an additional six years for researchers to glimpse at the functions provided by SMN1. According to the History Channel, When Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492, he observed Native Americans smokingtobacco. They actually used it to insert their cigars into their nostrils to smoke. Mccaslin Interruptions Poem Interruptions and the Mindful Moment: McCaslin s Interruptions In a busy and production oriented society, interruptions are generally seen as irritating, rude and unnecessary moments that should be avoided at all costs. However, in Interruptions , Susan McCaslin wants the reader to consider that living in the gaps between thought and conversation, in the interruptions of life, is how one can often see what is truly happening in the present around us. Using the rhetorical pattern of contrast as well as direction, the unexpected, natural imagery and words about language, McCaslin seeks to demonstrate the value of interruptions by understanding them as the gaps in life where the opportunities for mindfulness and creativity lie. The first stanza of McCaslin s Interruptions begins by giving the reader the direction that is the backbone of the poem s theme: in other words, the reader must grow accustomed to the interruptions in life so that the chance for mindfulness can occur. She then uses an unexpected subversion and natural imagery to begin building the contrasts where the interruptions in the poem develop. McCaslin directs the reader to Get used to them , beginning a series of commands to the reader to accept interruptions in every day life. In the text, Letter from Birmingham Jail, we find many examples of the criticism. Martin Luther King Jr. is writing a letter from inside the jail of Birmingham in April of 1963. Hitler was the maker of his own rules for his country, and due to his status didn t make his actions correct. At that time I m sure there were those who came against Hitler and were punished for it, just as King was being punished for his stand. Australia and the United States are both a part of the federal system. Both Australiaand the United Stateshave two chambers, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Hadoop is an open source platform where big data can be stored, managed and even used. Organisations like Amazon and LinkedIn use the Hadoop framework to connect to it s customers. Another new technology is MapReduce. MapReduce maps the input data and provides it to the user as output in a reduced form due to the clusters of computers working in parallel to individually process the data. With the further growth of data more technologies will be explored and if we assume if things proceed as they are doing, there will be time soon when we won t even have to look for jobs. The right job for our capabilities will be offered to us by comprehending us on our IQ, our likes and dislikes, our nature, hobbies, etc. Big Data comprises of data, structured and unstructured of such vast quantities that managing it, or even properly utilising it poses ... • 35. The Theme Of Truth In O s Powman By Piers Plowman Piers Plowman s whole plot revolves around truth. Piers Plowman is full of many references to truth. It is defined as all that is morally excellent in the world. Throughout the text, Truth is given all characteristics of God and the plowman does what is asked of him as if it was his God. Other methods of controlling opposition was the SS and the Gestapo, they would go around towns and beat up or arrest people who were assumed to be opposing the nazis. Burke s Nakedness Of Adam And Eve Burke identifies a norm of a naked expulsion of Adam and Eve beginning by 1500, which contradicts the biblical account God made coats of skins and clothed them before forced to leave the Garden of Eden. Afterwards, Adam and Evewere shown to be fully naked post expulsion from the Garden as seen in Masaccio s infamous Expulsion from Paradise (1423). Not all students can come to school with a fresh start that allows them to be ready and willing to learn. Still, society expects educators to teach all students and for all students to learn in the same ways. Studies have shown that music can be an efficient tool for resolving some of these barricades of the learningprocess. When music is suitably used as a background enhancer, the student s ability to concentrate within the classroom setting increases. As the classroom setting has advanced and progressed over time, teachers now have an opportunity to enrich learning further than before. Borges states that, in Hladik s mind a year would pass between the order of the fire and the discharge of the rifle (162) as a result of God. It pretends to supply the criterion for the determination of the unit of population proper to enjoy a government exclusively of its own, for the legitimate exercise of power in the state for the rights, organization, of a society, of states. Davy Crockett buckskin, military surplus, Buddhist robes, Edwardian suits, Errol Flynn pirate shirts, native American headbands, capes, cowboy and Beatle boots, hats bowlers, stove top, cowboy, Eskimo, anything and beads, of course. (Echols, Shaky Ground) It was not only the social values and fashion trends that were experimented with. This period in history also saw a large rise in drug usage. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
