What Does It Mean To Say Boom Goes The Dynamite
Boom goes the dynamite is a popular saying. Some people like me wanted to go a little deeper
and ask, who made dynamite and what makes dynamite go boom? Well i have the answer for both
of the questions and the answers are ascanio sobrero and nitroglycerin.
Our first run over is what is nitroglycerin? Nitroglycerin or nitro (NG) is a heavy, colorless, oily,
Explosive liquid. Chemically, the substance is an organic nitrate compound rather than a nitro
compound. Since the 1880 s, nitro or (NG)/nitroglycerin, has been used in the military as a solid
propellant. You may know a solid propellants main use which is to propel a bullet. What made
nitro so popular was its use to make a smokeless explosive unlike the beginning guns that when you

Community Economic Development Essay
Torres, Maria
CED 301 Midterm
Development and growth go hand in hand in the field of Community Economic Development.
Community economic development is a field of study that actively elicits community involvement
when working with government, and private sectors to build strong communities, industries, and
markets (Riley, 2012).
Economic Development applies to the context of people s sense of right and wrong. The definition
given by Michael Todaro suggests it is an increase in living standards, improvement in self esteem,
needs and freedom from oppression as well as greater choice; whereas economic growth is
necessary, but not a condition of economic development. Community economic development exists
in all developed countries but varies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, growth relates to a gradual increase in one of the components of consumption,
government spending, investment, and net exports. Lastly, economic development is concerned
with structural changes in the economy, whereas, growth is concerned with increase in the economy
s output.
According to Daniel Altman, employment increase creates growth, not the other way around. I
found this statement interesting because after analyzing the statement and thinking of what it
actually means, one can understand that where there is an increase in employment there will be in
increase in production and services. Moreover, structural unemployment occurs because of an
absence of demand for a certain type of workers with a certain type of skillset. This typically
happens when there are mismatches between the skills employers want and the skills that workers
have. Lastly, joblessness causes low consumption which in turn causes low growth.
Community Economic Development is not just about jobs and income. For example, a type of
employment in community economic development involves those in implementing a Community
Economic Development Plan and these employees serve in different functions, as plans vary from
community to community. Such employees will create studies to determine what a certain
community s goals are and send them to the appropriate municipal offices or economic
development committees. Community economic development

* Call emergency services.
The emergency services need to be called, and given all the correct information, such as, if you are
with the casualty now, how many people are involved, the patients age/gender, if they are
conscious. Computer software then uses this information to determine the priority of the call which
is then categorised into emergency or non emergency.
* Follow instructions from emergency services, and other members of staff.
Emergency services may give instructions over the phone, such as move child into recovery
position, or keep wound elevated, this will also give some reassurance to the child. And is helpful
for the emergency services as they are aware of how the child/young person is reacting to this.
* Inform parent/guardian.
Every child should have a record with emergency contact details of parents, grandparents, carers or
any other relative. They should be people that are easy to contact and who can contact parents if
necessary.
The person in charge will contact this person as soon as possible and tell that person what has
happened, and where the child is being taken, if the child has to be taken to hospital before the
parents arrive, the parents need to be informed on where the child is, someone that the child knows
well should be at the

The Ancient Greeks
During the time of the ancient Greeks we read about their remarkable achievements; whether it be
social, political, or cultural, we would not understand their accomplishments if it weren t for their
precise interpretation of text and the development of a lasting language. When looking at our lives
today, the lack of credit which goes to our ancient descendants is beyond decent; for the lives in
which they established for themselves, only furthered our capability and our potential of exceeding
what was never imagined. A civilization where individuals look to the text, the mathematical
equations, and the records from that of the ancient Greeks and learn from it. Between their
development of the written word, the idea of the recorded time, as... Show more content on

On top of that, I am able to say that the Greek society was a lot more established than I ever
believed, with evidence of their writing, record keeping, and the creation of the democratic system
many nations frame the foundations of the country today. With the development of a young
language, the greeks were able to formulate a alphabet with it, creating the ability to write, and
thereon creating records for trade, history, and mathematical/scientific testimonies. Now if we
consider evolution of western civilization, we can easily see and conclude that the simple
foundations of humanity explained throughout the paper are just a miniscule amount of
advancements made by the ancient greek civilization not to mention the Mesopotamians,
Mycenaeans and Egyptians and their advancements in architecture and more. Western civilization is
no one place, but is the way humanity moves forward, for what was in the east was discovered, but
coming from the west was the wind and what was the unknown. Western societies are ones that are
civilized and carry out more than hunting and gathering communities, those that carry out trade,
government, and that think beyond the everyday needs of a human. The ideas of these ancient
societies have proved to withstand the lengths of time and endure

Human Security And National Security
Too often, the notion/concept of national security is misinterpreted and made too narrow. It s a
common belief of many that national security only entails the protection of states borders from
outside threats. In recent times, this seems to not be the case, since the dangers that states faces
now threatens the life of the individual, therefore, protection of the citizens, their wellbeing, and the
laws of the land becomes a priority which links it or makes it human security. States like the US are
adjusting their foreign policies to fit this new human security as national security approach. Also,
with the world becoming a small global village, states are using less military force to settle
dispute. They are reducing the amount of violence they use against one another. Everyone seems
to be embracing the notion of peace rather than war and I believe this is so because nations do not
want to go back to the hostility and instability of the Cold Warera. Using the United Statesforeign
policies (past and current) regarding terrorism, I will be analyzing how they fit or do not fit into the
spectrum of human security as national security.
According to Roland Paris, human security does not have one explicit definition. Different nations
and organization define this concept differently; each according to its view, policies, interests, and
goals. Paris compared the concept to standard developmental goals, in the sense that though most (if
not all) nations desire it, only a few knows

Racial Stereotyping Of African Americans Essay
Introduction What does it mean to be stereotyped? The definition of stereotype is Stereotyping
may be defined as the tendency to attribute generalized and simplified characteristics to groups of
people in the form of verbal labels, and to act towards the members of those groups in terms of
those labels (Kanahara, 2006) When asked to pick a topic and do a research study, I decided
that the topic of racial stereotyping would be efficient. As I began to watch movies I started to
see a trend. I saw African Americans being portrayed as being violent, uneducated, and ghetto.
European Americans were portrayed as being self absorbed, materialistic, and privileged. What I
want to know is if different races are being stereotyped in media for the sake of entertainment.
Over time it seemed like the media would perceive African Americans as thugs. Not only were
African American s stereotyped as thugs, but they re also seen as being ghetto. African American
s are not the only ones stereotyped, but so are Hispanics and Asians. Hispanics in media are
portrayed as being illegal immigrants, uneducated, and housekeepers. Asians are portrayed as
foreigners, geeks, and kung fu fighters. Literature Review A study over social issues done by
Mastro mentions that in our history we have yet to experience a world free from complications of
race. One thing she mentions that contributes to race complications is the mass media. Not only are
we influenced by movies and television, but from the

argument, but are mainly against gay marriages. Gay marriageis a sin, violates the natural law,
children should be raised by a mother and father, and the rights should not be equal if they
choose to disobey God. However, Katha Pollitt a poet and essayist, is all for gay marriage in her

A child should be raised by a father and a mother. A child should not be raised by the same gender
growing up.
Gay marriage ignores the offspring s best interests. It really offends God in a lot of ways that
there are people in our world like this. People will use the excuse of everybody sins, but I know
that this issue is one of the major sins that you should not cross, no matter the circumstances.
God created men and women to be fertile and multiply. He created us to raise the children
correctly and maybe become doctors. He did not create us to raise or have the same gender.
Children need mother and father figures throughout their life. In the Article What s wrong with
Gay Marriage? by the Katha Pollitt, she is for Gay Marriage and honestly believes there is
nothing wrong with it. She does not believe that homosexuals threaten the institution. In the
article on page 461, Pollitt states, Gay marriage is not about sex, it is about separation of church
and state. She strongly believes that gay marriage creates happiness. Pollitt is not a fan of
marriage because she rather love freely, but she agrees that gay marriage should get the same
type of treatment like an ordinary marriage between a man and woman. She sees marriage as an
easy way to receive money. Some people look at it as loving one person and growing family.

Residential School Vs. Residential Schools
When taking this program one of the first subject learned within the first nations course was
residential schools, and how they were one of many elements to the colonization of the First
Nations peoples. When in class talking about residential schools could be summed up with
discussing displacement and how the Europeans would take indigenous children to schools far from
their homes, cut their hair, and feed them food they weren t used to. According to Eric Hanson, Two
primary objectives of the residential school system were to remove and isolate children from the
influence of their homes, families, traditions and cultures, and to assimilate them into the dominant
culture (2009). Based off this knowledge but not limited to, the class... Show more content on

Throughout history countries all over have gone through processes of continuous control, and
dominance being held over them which we know as colonization. And through colonization cultural
practices have been taken along with languages, and spiritual beliefs with the opposites of whatever
those may be imposed on them. Residential schools, one of many elements of colonization when it
comes to the Indigenous peoples had a number of these included; as stated by CBC news (2008),
Students were discouraged from speaking their first language or practising native traditions. If they
were caught, they would experience severe punishment. Native traditions can include spiritual
practice, beliefs, language, clothing and more which were all forbidden to be participated in. This
not only oppresses the child, but causes anxiety knowing that if they re caught punishment would
follow afterwards. These elements that make up the Indigenous culture were forbidden to the
children attending these schools, and in turn are replaced with western beliefs systems. Belief
systems in some cases would be Christianity since Church s ran the school at that time; ..The
Roman Catholic Church operated three fifths, the Anglican Church one quarter and the United and
Presbyterian Churches the remainder. (Miller, J.R, 2012, para 3). Its safe to assume that because
the Church ran these schools Christianity was imposed on them, and that once these

Examples Of Discrimination In A Fine Balance
Caste Discrimination in Politics
In A Fine Balance, Mistry investigates the subaltern status of the Dalits and the impact of
untouchability on politics. At that point, Mistry highlights the cruelty of political issues in this
novel. Judith Fetterley expounds the power in politics: Power is the issue in the politics of
literature, as it is in the politics of anything else. To be excluded from a literature , that claims to

He also investigates the injustice of caste, and tests the ramifications of opposing it. While
Narayan picks political resistance, Om and Ishvar experience the ill effects of escape and outcast.

Response To Cecil The Lion
Since the shooting of Cecil the Lion by Dr Walter Palmer in July, 2015 in Zimbabwe the idea of
trophy hunting has been placed under a critical eye by the international audience. In an opinion

continuation of trophy huntingin African countries such as Zimbabwe, due to the positives of the

The Teacher Had Put On Board
Slightly and squeaky! The door to the classroom flew open as I burst into the room and sat in

morning. The professor said, as she walked into the classroom. Almost every one of the students

Class Inequality And The American Class
A response to Class in America 2009 makes some good points why Americans hate the word
class. Class is a word to classify a group of people to a certain social status. Americans do not like
to be put in a category based off of their money. Gregory Mantsios the author, explains how we
view ourselves. For example, most American citizens identify themselves with work. Mantsios
gives other reasons, and a solution to fix the American class labeling. Mantsios made some
really good points about how Americas view word class, and made me agree with some of his
myth. He also presented a weak solution that would go against our government to fix the
problem of class in America. Class in America by Gregory Mantsios is a profile of class
inequality in today s society in America. He begins by mentioning that people in America, rich or
poor, do not seem to talk about class or class differences. He says that is why classes divide. He
mentions myths most Americans believe that this country is classless, and full of equal
opportunity, and replaces them with realities. These realities are that class inequality is not pretty
bad but getting worse. Emphasized by profiles of citizens of various classes. He concludes that the
main problems are capitalism, racism, and androcentric, and the solution is redistribution of wealth.
Mantsios says, Workers are most likely to identify with their employer, industry, or occupational
group (177). When you ask most people what they do for a living they

Literary Scholarship And Criticism Of Shakespeare s The...
Shakespeare critic and Harvard literature professor, Harold Bloom, asserts that Shakespeare is the
metaphorical inventor of man. Bloom writes:
The plays remain the outward limit of human achievement: aesthetically, cognitively, in certain
ways morally, even spiritually. They abide beyond the end of the mind s reach, we cannot catch up
to them. Shakespeare will go on explaining us, in part because, he invented us (pp. 19 20).
Bloom s audacious evaluation of Shakespeare has been echoed throughout the canon of literary
scholarship and criticism. In fact, Bloom s invention thesis, found in Shakespeare: The Invention of

Hamlet: The Prince of Denmark is a hallmark example of Shakespeare s contemplation of social
tolerance and equity in the exploration of human sociology. In this play, we see the malignant
ambition of newly throned King Claudius, the questionable decision making of Queen Gertrude,
and the emotionally preying and encompassing force of murdered King Hamlet s ghost,
construct the grounds for contemplation of human drama; this contemplation is essentially
distilled and literally embodied by the character of Prince Hamlet. Moreover, the truth, hidden at
the onset of this play, sets the internal and external conflict for Prince Hamlet as well as the
figurative stage for a study of human character and action, or alternatively, ego and power.
Prince Hamlet s own ego is festered by the crime against his father: a murder committed by
Hamlet s ambitious uncle, Claudius, whose own ego has led him down a the path of a usurper.
Yet, Shakespeare exposes that the pains of human ego are not morally equivalent between these

ego is that of a wounded sense of self created out of the anguish he feels in his inability to take
deliberate action against Claudius, driven out of the lack of evidence to truly

Magical Realism, By The Tears Of Tita, Weeping Of The Guests
Wouldn t it be fun if we had Magical realism in every book we read to make us more intrigued to
what we are reading about? Without magical realism a story would be numb and have no
expression. Magical realism is a narrative fiction and it includes different elements to actually
express a real life view of the world. For instance in the book Like Water for Chocolate, the author
Esquivel includes magical realism. By using magical realism, she shows the expressions that Tita
the main characterhas to face and the emotional barriers she also faces. Esquivel incorporates
magical realism in each chapter and it signifies something in the noveland connects to it. Esquivel

reader through the novel and makes the story enthusiastic to develop an open minded setting.
She brings us to the next chapter and incorporates magical realism in which she talks about the
feelings of the guests when they had ate the cake Tita made for Pedro and Rosaura s wedding.
Esquivel states but the weeping was just the first symptom of a strange intoxication an acute
attack of pain and frustration that seized the guests and scattered them across the patio and the
grounds and in the bathrooms, all of them wailing over lost love (pg.39). These symptoms the
guest had were all he feelings Tita had inside her when making the cake, they were being
transmitted to them. Further on Lam states while Tita was preparing it, she was frustrated, sad,
an angry about the wedding. Her sister was marrying her love of her life and she was crushed.
This scene represents the power of Tita s emotions and how she can negatively affect others
through her cooking . Her emotions tell a lot in this novel and makes us feel what the author is
trying to portray. As you could see the author Esquivel adds a lot of magical realism to make it
more intrigued and an open minded setting. She furthermore keeps adding on and still continue to

Argumentative Essay On Renewable Energy
Hydroelectric power has been used for many years. And over the past few years, it has grown
throughout our country. Using an alternative energy source will overall become the best
solution for the loss of nonrenewable energy sources. 7% of people using renewable energy are
using Hydroelectric power. This might not seem like much, but it compares to the other
alternatives knowing only 4% of people use solar power. People have been collecting energy
from moving water for centuries, and why not put this to use. I believe that hydroelectric energy
is the ВЁbestВЁ source for a few reasons. First i m going to define what being the best means.
The best means that it is overall going to help us in the future by using what he already have. It
doesn t have to necessarily be the cheapest but it does have to do the job and last as long as
possible so that the country can be able to thrive with an alternate energy source. The first reason
itВґs the best is that the country is already using it. It s the most used source of renewable energy
.This makes it easier to expand the usage as more people are influenced. The second reason is that
it uses materials we already have. Water covers 71% of the earth, and this can make hydroelectric
energy the most reasonable to use.
Moving into how this energy source is used, i m going to be sharing how the power is made. First,
there has to be a dam that goes in a river. Next, the water going through the dam goes into turbines.
As the water goes into

Charlie Gordon, a mentally compromised man, should not have received the surgery to increase

The Bystander Effect By Bibb Latane And John Darley
Overview On March 13, 1964 thirty eight neighbors failed to intervene when a 28 year old woman
named Katherine Kitty Genovese was being murdered behind the building. (Manning, Levine,
Collins, 2007). This incident proposed the experiment of the Bystander Effect by Bibb LatanГ©
and John Darley, among other scientists, to find out why thirty eight people had not done anything
to help during this situation (LatanГ© Darley, 1969).
According to LatanГ© and Darley (1969), The Bystander Effect has three main explanations
behind it, which includes diffusion of responsibility, evaluation apprehension, and pluralistic
ignorance (Darley LatanГ©, 1968). Diffusion of responsibility withdraws a person from
exhibiting a helping behavior when there are other bystanders present because it is expected that
others can contribute to the helping behavior, and that the outcome is not just on one person s
shoulders (LatanГ© et al., 2002). On the other hand, when a person imagines that there are no
other people present, or that the people present are not able to engage in a helping behavior, a
person will act as if he or she was alone and will be more likely to intervene in the situation (Darley,
Teger, Lewis, 1973).
Before acting during an emergency, a person is most likely to scan around and observe whether
others are already taking responsibility, or are about to take responsibility for it; if those people in
the scene of an emergency are not doing anything, then the person will feel

Sally Brampton Depression
Killing oneself is, anyway, a misnomer. We don t kill ourselves. We are simply defeated by the
long, hard struggle to stay alive. When somebody dies after a long illness, people are apt to say,
with a note of approval, He fought so hard. And they are inclined to think, about a suicide, that no
fight was involved, that somebody simply gave up. This is quite wrong. When Sally Brampton
quoted this she was going through a rough patch in her life fighting the demons of depressionand
alcoholism. Sometimes people will have ways to control those demons or even fight them, in

with a glamorous career. Nobody knew how awful things had gotten for her. Understanding
depression varies from person to person. One person may understand it and know what s going
on, while another person will totally be lost and believe that you are making everything up.

The Weakening and Loss of Muscle Caused by Muscular Dystrophy Disease As a whole, muscular
dystrophy is a group of many different diseases causing muscle weakness and muscle loss in
skeletal muscles that control movement of the body (Korschun, 2007). Each distinction of this
genetic disease may affect different muscle groups and even have different symptoms. One thing
these diseases have in common is that the person affected will lose more and more muscle as they
age. Currently, there is no cure for muscular dystrophy but there is treatment that may help alleviate
the pain and slowing the disease down (Muscular Dystrophy, n.d.). Most people are diagnosed at a

Lastly, imaging tests are used to examine the muscles. When muscles are broken down, fatty
deposits replace it. Those who possess a muscular dystrophy disease usually have more fat mass
than those who are healthy (GuzmГЎn, GarcГa, RodrГguez Cruz, 2012). Imaging tests can show
how much muscle has been replaced with fat. The symptoms may seem obvious for muscular
dystrophy. When muscles degenerate, they cannot be used at the fullest potential. The earliest
symptom may be delayed walking in children (Bushby et al., 2009). A reduction in size and
strength of muscle is another sign that muscles could be degenerating. The variations of muscular
dystrophy disease target different and several muscles. Having trouble using a group of muscles

people may fall frequently also (How is muscular, n.d.). If the patient has weak respiratory

The Veil in Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis Essay
Marjane Satrapi s Persepolis introduces the Islamic veil as an attempt by the Iranian government to

Rebels who refused to wear the headscarf were threatened with beating, rape or death. These
modern women who fought against religious oppression met the minimal requirements of the
governmentrules to safely live in the hostile environment. Through being forced to wear the veil, the
control of the Islamic government drives its people to a rebellion.

The Iranian government forced its control on children by forcing segregating the schools and
making girls wear the Iranian headscarf. Wearing the scarf represents the concealment of
childhood in Iran for Marjane and her friends. Reformation in Iran comes with the protests,
violence and eventually war which disguise the chance of childhood for the youth of the country.
Marjane says, we found ourselves veiled and separated from our friends (4). Concealing these
children from the childhood they deserved left them to deal with fear, anger, loss and death. Her
story highlights the lack of stability children need to grow into responsible adults. Marjane s story
represents the thousands of children in Iran who are lacking the proper elements for child
development because of the revolution.
Though the veil forms an inconvenience in the lives of all Iranian women, it serves as a form of
protection in their lives against the dangerous religious extremists fighting for the revolution.
Marjane and her mother did not believe in the religious importance of wearing the veil but knew
they had to wear them for their own protection against radical religious men that could try to take
advantage of them. The president claimed that women s hair emanates rays that excite men (74).

With Jonas s job as being The Giver, truth is a very important aspect. Being The Giver, he learns
about the real, and whole truth. The Giver is the one who keeps all of the memories of truth.
Without it there would be no reason to have a Giver. Another way that the truth works in the role
Jonas was given would be that if Jonas leaves the community, all of the memories that he had

Researching National Cultures: an evaluation of Filipino and Australian Cultures
Introduction
The age of technology is at reach almost everywhere in the world. The world is considered as a
Global Village wherein the flawless movement of toil, people and data has become a commonplace.
It has been internationalized that communication between countries had become a prerequisite. By
this, being able to understand its traditions and culture plays a vital role due to its diverse
worldviews and often dissimilarity of values. The ability to prevent potential conflicts and foster
productive, cooperative relations will depend largely on effective intercultural relations .
(Communication between cultures, eight edition p. 4 2013)
The main core of this report is to compare and distinguish the divergence of Filipinos and Australian
national cultures. The focal point will be primarily about the incessant population growth of
Filipino migration in the northern Territory of Australia that ensued more than one hundred years
ago. According to the 2011 poll, there were 171, 233 Filipino people in Australia with an

Individual Differences Among People Are What Defines The...
Individual differences among people are what defines the boundaries of personality. Personality
psychology discusses emotionality with general focuses on its involvement with the emotional
mind and its portrayal in the outside world. According to the literature, emotionality includes a
variety of contexts, almost exclusively referring to the social relationships and maturation of
children and adolescents. Often in the discussions on emotionality, there is a connection to the Big
Five trait, neuroticism. In this account, a comparative approach to both the biological perspective
and the evolutionary perspective will be assessed, as well as an evaluation of the trait evident in

Effects Of Soft Drugs On Society, And On Adolescent Youth
1 Introduction
I have written this essay in response to the essay prompt Recreational use of soft drugs such as
marijuana or ecstasy is less harmful than alcohol consumption and therefore should be
decriminalised. In this essay I will talk about the effects that soft drugs have on society, and on
adolescent youth. I will also talk about my position on this matter, and what I believe is the right
course of action to take in regards to the essay prompt.
After learning about the issues regarding both sides or the argument, I would choose to support
those who oppose decriminalization of any drug. Drugs simply create problems that affect society
in different ways. People believe that making drugs legal will take away the temptation to use
them. This idea is wrong and far from logical. If the drugs are legalized, then they will be more
accessible to the young, addicted and ignorant.
2 Body
Drugs have been a problem in society for a very long time and it is still an ongoing subject of
debate. Different organisations work hard to keep people from using drugs, though a new issue has
arisen. During the last few years there have been discussions in some countries to decriminalize soft
drugs, including cannabis and ecstasy.
I believe it is wrong to legalize any sort of recreational drug, no matter what sort of effect it has
on the user and society. All drugs have a negative impact on the issue, whether it be short term or
long term side effects. There are already serious issues

working at a print shop, and then realized they wanted to open a business so they decide to open a

It was not easy to be in innovator. Innovators needed to know a lot of information to make sure

people who successfully built and flew the first airplane, although many people and big companies

Fear In Hamlet
Hamlet: A Fear y Tale
In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Prince Hamlet does not prove to be the stereotypical perfect
prince. Shakespeare s choice in making Hamlet vulnerable, anxious and afraid of the stress of his
life allows for the reader to relate to him. Each human experiences fear and its mysteries. However,
in order to move forward in life, it is inevitable to face these fears. Indecisive minds, like Hamlet,
can grow by taking the time to comprehend their fears, letting the fears guide their thoughts and
choosing to use their creative imaginations to make decisions.
When people are struggling with making an important decision for their future, they can become
paralyzed by their constant questioning. They question their capabilities and the uncertainty of the
future makes them anxious. This fear is shown in Hamlet s extensive analysis of his situation. He
exhausts every angle of the problem before making a decision. He questions his capability as a
leader, his anxiety taking over his thoughts. In Act I Scene 5, Hamlet states,
This time is out of joint. O cursed spite,
That ever was I born to set it right! (Hamlet, Act 1 Scene 5, line 205).
Hamlet s fear is crushing his self confidence. If he had taken the time to listen to his fears, his
anxiety would have decreased. Learning how to analyze fear is an important tool in making wise
decisions. According to Karen Walker s TEDTalk What Fear Can Teach Us , Fears are a form of
unintentional storytelling (5:23). We are

Analysis Of The Book Cold Mountain
Symbolism is the idea of representing things by using symbols or devoting things with a symbolic
meaning or character. Symbolism can range from something miniscule or even something broad to
something very specific, as long as it has some connection with something else or someone else.
Charles Frazier, author of Cold Mountain, exemplifies quite a few examples of symbolism. From
the crows to the roads, and even the title itself, the novelshows show many different points of
symbolism. As the book goes on, the amount of symbolism appears, making the character and
the symbolism more understand and attention grabbing towards the reader making them not
want to put the book down. When people think crows they think annoying black birds that try to
steal food from gardens, but in Cold Mountain, it is a big part of the story, as well as a
reoccurring symbol within the novel. The reader first reads about the crows right when the book
begins, when Inman was younger and in school. When he was just a little kid in school, he was
being mischievous and decided to throw his hat out the window, but when it landed it took a
shape of something. It landed far out across the playground at the edge of the hayfield and rested
there black as the shadow of a crowsquatted on the ground (Frazier 5). In this quote, it is odd that a
young age he sees a crow just from a hat, but it does show early on, that there is some sort of
connection between Inman and crows. Although the first instance of the

My Company Essay
What is the name of your company?
The name of my company is Florely. Most people would name their business after their family
name, such as their last name. For an example, Johnson Johnson was named after Robert Wood
Johnson I. Naming your business after your surname could be nice, but it wouldn t be original. It
also depends on the product that the company is trying to sell. Naming the company Florely was
all behind my product or products. If you didn t get it from the name, the company is all about
selling flowers. Florely is a company that has thrived off of selling flowers since the twentieth of
May, 2012. All of Florely s employees are trained to understand the meaning behind each flower
that we produce. Majority of Florely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the plant decides to set seed, our employees have to shear the plants to encourage the plant
to grow. Shearing means cutting the plant back by removing majority of the plant without
interfering with its structure. Pansies love fertilizer but giving them too much will make the plants
weak. So, we only renew their fertilizer once a month. During its growth period there might be
weak flowers and we go through a process of deheading the pansy. Cutting off the dead parts of
the plant will increase bloomage of flower. Pansies grow throughout the wet season because
during the fall it rains constantly. These type of plants love the full sun but partial shade. We
couldn t figure out why our plants weren t growing. So, as a company, Florely decided to hire
experts to come and investigate. This type of cold, wet, and partially dark area bring insects such
as gastropods (slugs). Florely as a whole has done thorough research and came up with a couple of
ideas. These ideas consisted of thinning out the soil or trying out a different brand of fertilizer. We
tried both methods for over a month, but nothing worked and it cost the company a lot of money.
3)What are at least three issues that can solve the company s problem or issue?
As previously stated, Florely s issue is that slugs are causing a decrease in the growth of our famous
pansies for the fall

Comparison Of Heinrich Harrer And The Dalai Lama
The struggle for independence has been a pervasive theme in many nations histories and continues
to be a part of Tibet s make up. Since the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1949, over 6,000 Tibetan
Buddhist monasteries and shrines have been destroyed and any mention or reference of the Dalai
Lama has been banned. Heinrich Harrer and the Dalai Lamawere great friends, they both taught
each other valuable lessons in life. The Dalai Lama continued to spiritually preside in Tibetby
praying and setting an example for all his followers. In 1949, China sent tens of thousands of
troops to Tibet killing, capturing, and torturing thousands of Tibetan people as depicted in the
movie. Seven Years in Tibet provides an accurate depiction of the relationship

Harrer s expedition takes him through physical challenges to escape from prison, travel and
survive in the Himalayan region. He has to conquer mental obstacles relating to his failed
marriage and son that he has never seen as well as his desire to live or die. After he arrived in
Tibet, in the sacred city of Lhasa, Harrer eventually became friends with the Dalai Lama.
Foreigners in Lhasa were rare and Harrer became well known by many. The Dalai Lama was
fascinated by their culture and so he requested a meeting with Harrer, which was the beginning of
a unique friendship. The Dalai Lama asked Harrer to build him a movie theatre. Harrer agreed and
from that point on, their relationship grew with Harrer tutoring the Dalai Lama with knowledge of
the world, cultures, and geography. Their relationship developed with Harrer mentoring the Dalai
Lama and becoming an advisor and confidant. During the time that Harrer was in Tibet, China
invaded Tibet attempting to gain control of the country. China s attack influenced the Dalai Lama s
decisions and he relied on Harrer rather than his own

The Book Of Job Controversy
The text The Book of Job, interpreted and translated by Stephen Mitchell, raises great controversy
in the world of righteousness. It is a well known, universal text, and with each new interpreter who
translates, there is a new version of the story brought to the surface. William Blake partakes in this
conflict of ideas through his artwork rather than his writing. His art reflects his own personal view
of the text and has both similar and differentiating opinions than Mitchell s own on the key events
in the book. Narrowing it down to Blake s ideas behind the scene depicted in Figure A alongside
Mitchell s in the text, it is a perfect demonstration of the two interpretations clashing and blending
their ideas. Starting with Mitchell s written... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By directing the attention onto not only the main illustration, but also the art located on the
border, one is able to further deduce Blake s interpretation. Shown in Figure A, directly under the
main illustration there appears to be two birds, a crow and an owl, in some sort of quarrel.
Based on the context of the dispute happening in the main illustration, it is safe to assume that
these birds represent the opposing sides of the argument. The crow, appearing more aggravated,
shows more correlation to the three friend s side, and the owl, while alarmed but not nearly as
aggressive looking, leans more towards Job s. The crow is a common symbol of evil, bad luck,
and even death. If Blake drew the connection from the crow to the three friends, then it can be
inferred that Blake has a rather negative outlook on them and their side of this fight. Rather than
looking into the logic behind it, Blake seems to base his interpretation of these characters on
their words and actions from the text, which paint them as truly terrible acquaintances. In order
to further depict this, Blake illustrates the three friends in the most judgemental fashion: lined up
together, all with their pointer fingers outstretched in accusation towards Job. Their expressions
do not fall short of condemning or angry. Job on the other hand, connected to the owl, is seen as
a wise man in Blake s eyes. At the very least, Blake agrees with Job s reasoning and sticks to the
wise side of the is Job a wise man debate. Job himself also gives way to Blake s thoughts through
his body language in the illustration. Eyes cast to the heavens, palms faced out in a questionly
manner, his look of grief and questioning directly portrays Blake s vision of Job s immense suffering
. This theme of suffering once again connects to the border of the print. The desperate looking
humanoid figures bound by chains lead to the conclusion that Blake overemphasizes (and

The Three Leadership Competencies Of An Army Leader
You can ask ten different Soldiers what an Army leader is, or what they believe a good Army
leader is. It will not matter the rank, time in service or the maturity level of that Soldier because
more than likely you will get ten different answers. Everyone has their own opinions on what an
Army leader is, or what they believe a good Army leader is. By definition leadershipin the Army is
the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish
the mission and improve the organization (ADRP 6 22, 2012). There are three leadership
competencies that make an Army leader; leads, develops and achieves. Leadership comes in all
types of styles. No two Army leaders will have the same style. There is a saying that goes around
our ranks today, Your leadership traits strongly reflect your past leadership. Meaning that you will
develop traits and habits that you have seen in your past leadership. Whether they are good or
bad, you will not notice them yourself until you think about what you are doing or saying. It takes
time to develop as a leader, and you will know when you find your style that works for you and
you re Soldiers. Leading subordinates to success starts with building trust with your subordinates. It
is important to gain trust throughout the ranks because without trust it is hard to influence Soldiers
and complete the overall mission. You do not just receive trust automatically because you are a
leader, you have to earn

The Effects Of Exercise On Health
The Effects of Exercise on Health
Introduction
Today, physical exercise is evolving and highly promoted through society in the United States. In
the past few years people have begun to use social media to encourage themselves and others to
get in shape. People post pictures and videos on apps such Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook in
order show workout techniques and progress. Physical activity is essential in order to reduce the
risk of many diseases and promote a healthy lifestyle. It is encouraged by the American College of
Sports Medicine that adults should exercise for about 150 minutes per week if they want to enhance
their cardiorespiratory wellness. (Henkel, 2011) Regular exercise encourages physiological and

It is also important to properly warm up and cool down in order to prevent injuries. It may be
hypothesized that a warm up period with moderate aerobic exercise prior to intensive eccentric
exercise will reduce DOMS by reducing the extent of muscle damage. (Olav Olsen,1, Mona
SjГёhaug, Mireille van Beekvelt, and Paul Jarle Mork, 2011). With gradual workout progression,
it allows your muscles to adjust to adjust to the load of force you put on it in your workout.
Including Flexibility
Studies have shown that flexibility exercises have been shown to be beneficial in at least one
randomized trial and are recommended in the management of several common diseases in older
adults (Nelson, Rejeski, Blair, Duncan, Judge, King, Macera, Castaneda Sceppa, 2007). Flexibility
is important in exercise because it can help prevent injuries by increasing your ability to control
your muscle through its full range of motion. Warming up and cooling down before and after
working out plays an important role in flexibility because it helps loosen up your muscles and
prepares them for for the workout. Including flexibility workouts regularly can improve your
posture balance and performance throughout the exercise. Thus, also preventing injuries.
Resistance Training
Resistance training is essential in weightlifting. It improves your health by allowing your muscle to

Characteristics Of Eleanor Roosevelt
The quote significant figures in history always have flaws rings true for several historical
figures, however, in regards to Eleanor Roosevelt, it can be argued that her achievements far
outweigh her flaws. Eleanor s contradictory policies and causes created confusion and inspired
critics, although her compassionate attitude inspired several positive changes despite this. At the
time, a lot of her actions were considered to be controversial; however, as society has evolved a
lot of people can view her as being forward thinking and just. Her attitude towards her role as a
First Lady was also quite presumptuous, however, some may view this as a positive trait rather
than a flaw. Despite Eleanor Roosevelts flaws as a politician and public figure, she was highly
influential and changed the path of history and minority groups throughout America. In many
documents describing Eleanor Roosevelt, she is explained as being either one of two oppositional
extremes an amazing humanitarian, or a stoic business woman. These kind of contradictions
penalise Eleanor, creating confusion amongst Americans. Some causes of hers were also
contradictory for example, she was a strong believer in liberal women, yet rejected the Equal Rights
Amendment. Eleanor believed that the Equal Rights Amendment would jeopardise the laws she had
fought to put into place for women such as minimum wagelaws and exclusion from dangerous jobs.
However, Eleanor was and remains to be an influential figure for strong women worldwide. She
stated in Redbook Magazine, Women must learn to play the game as men do. She worked hard
to ensure women were involved in politics, by emphasising that women speak their minds on the
issues they face. Being such an active and outspoken First Lady was revolutionary and
extremely important for the country to see. In this way, Eleanor s contradictions can be
overlooked as the causes she worked for inspired many generations of socially aware Americans.
During the time of Franklin Roosevelt s presidency, and Eleanor Roosevelt s time of being a First
Lady, many of her actions were considered unladylike and controversial. The way Eleanor spoke
out with unapologetic candor was unheard of for a woman in her

The Three Major Arguments For The Existence Of God
Some of the three major arguments for the existence of God are cosmological, ontological, and
teleological arguments. Cosmological argument is the reasoning that the being of the universe is
powerful proof for the existence of a God who made it. There are two main forms of cosmological
argument, the modal and temporal. Modal cosmological argument, also known as the argument
from contingency, recommends that because the world may not have existed, we then need some
clarification of why it does exist. When there is more than one likelihood, something has to decide
which of the possibilities is understood clearly. Therefore the world is contingent, because there
has to be a logical reason for its existence. This form of argument also claims that the only type of
existence that doesn t need any clarification is a being that does not failed to exist such as God.
Temporal cosmological argument, also known as the Kalam argument, contends that all evidence
are that there is a point in life at which the world began to exist, and that this starting must either
have been caused or uncaused. The cosmological argument used by Aquinas declares that since
nothing originates from nothing. Therefore the world must have been brought into reality by
something outside it, which can be called God .
Ontological argument is an argument that is not based on inspection of the universe, but rather on
rationality alone. This type of argument reasons from the study of being or existence (ontology).

  • 2. What Does It Mean To Say Boom Goes The Dynamite Boom goes the dynamite is a popular saying. Some people like me wanted to go a little deeper and ask, who made dynamite and what makes dynamite go boom? Well i have the answer for both of the questions and the answers are ascanio sobrero and nitroglycerin. Our first run over is what is nitroglycerin? Nitroglycerin or nitro (NG) is a heavy, colorless, oily, Explosive liquid. Chemically, the substance is an organic nitrate compound rather than a nitro compound. Since the 1880 s, nitro or (NG)/nitroglycerin, has been used in the military as a solid propellant. You may know a solid propellants main use which is to propel a bullet. What made nitro so popular was its use to make a smokeless explosive unlike the beginning guns that when you fired, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Community Economic Development Essay Torres, Maria CED 301 Midterm Development and growth go hand in hand in the field of Community Economic Development. Community economic development is a field of study that actively elicits community involvement when working with government, and private sectors to build strong communities, industries, and markets (Riley, 2012). Economic Development applies to the context of people s sense of right and wrong. The definition given by Michael Todaro suggests it is an increase in living standards, improvement in self esteem, needs and freedom from oppression as well as greater choice; whereas economic growth is necessary, but not a condition of economic development. Community economic development exists in all developed countries but varies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, growth relates to a gradual increase in one of the components of consumption, government spending, investment, and net exports. Lastly, economic development is concerned with structural changes in the economy, whereas, growth is concerned with increase in the economy s output. According to Daniel Altman, employment increase creates growth, not the other way around. I found this statement interesting because after analyzing the statement and thinking of what it actually means, one can understand that where there is an increase in employment there will be in increase in production and services. Moreover, structural unemployment occurs because of an absence of demand for a certain type of workers with a certain type of skillset. This typically happens when there are mismatches between the skills employers want and the skills that workers have. Lastly, joblessness causes low consumption which in turn causes low growth. Community Economic Development is not just about jobs and income. For example, a type of employment in community economic development involves those in implementing a Community Economic Development Plan and these employees serve in different functions, as plans vary from community to community. Such employees will create studies to determine what a certain community s goals are and send them to the appropriate municipal offices or economic development committees. • 5. The Ancient Greeks During the time of the ancient Greeks we read about their remarkable achievements; whether it be social, political, or cultural, we would not understand their accomplishments if it weren t for their precise interpretation of text and the development of a lasting language. When looking at our lives today, the lack of credit which goes to our ancient descendants is beyond decent; for the lives in which they established for themselves, only furthered our capability and our potential of exceeding what was never imagined. A civilization where individuals look to the text, the mathematical equations, and the records from that of the ancient Greeks and learn from it. On top of that, I am able to say that the Greek society was a lot more established than I ever believed, with evidence of their writing, record keeping, and the creation of the democratic system many nations frame the foundations of the country today. With the development of a young language, the greeks were able to formulate a alphabet with it, creating the ability to write, and thereon creating records for trade, history, and mathematical/scientific testimonies. Now if we consider evolution of western civilization, we can easily see and conclude that the simple foundations of humanity explained throughout the paper are just a miniscule amount of advancements made by the ancient greek civilization not to mention the Mesopotamians, Mycenaeans and Egyptians and their advancements in architecture and more. Western civilization is no one place, but is the way humanity moves forward, for what was in the east was discovered, but coming from the west was the wind and what was the unknown. Western societies are ones that are civilized and carry out more than hunting and gathering communities, those that carry out trade, government, and that think beyond the everyday needs of a human. The ideas of these ancient societies have proved to withstand the lengths of time and endure ... • 6. Human Security And National Security Too often, the notion/concept of national security is misinterpreted and made too narrow. It s a common belief of many that national security only entails the protection of states borders from outside threats. In recent times, this seems to not be the case, since the dangers that states faces now threatens the life of the individual, therefore, protection of the citizens, their wellbeing, and the laws of the land becomes a priority which links it or makes it human security. States like the US are adjusting their foreign policies to fit this new human security as national security approach. Also, with the world becoming a small global village, states are using less military force to settle dispute. They are reducing the amount of violence they use against one another. Everyone seems to be embracing the notion of peace rather than war and I believe this is so because nations do not want to go back to the hostility and instability of the Cold Warera. Using the United Statesforeign policies (past and current) regarding terrorism, I will be analyzing how they fit or do not fit into the spectrum of human security as national security. According to Roland Paris, human security does not have one explicit definition. Different nations and organization define this concept differently; each according to its view, policies, interests, and goals. Paris compared the concept to standard developmental goals, in the sense that though most (if not all) nations desire it, only a few knows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Racial Stereotyping Of African Americans Essay Introduction What does it mean to be stereotyped? The definition of stereotype is Stereotyping may be defined as the tendency to attribute generalized and simplified characteristics to groups of people in the form of verbal labels, and to act towards the members of those groups in terms of those labels (Kanahara, 2006) When asked to pick a topic and do a research study, I decided that the topic of racial stereotyping would be efficient. As I began to watch movies I started to see a trend. I saw African Americans being portrayed as being violent, uneducated, and ghetto. European Americans were portrayed as being self absorbed, materialistic, and privileged. What I want to know is if different races are being stereotyped in media for the sake of entertainment. Over time it seemed like the media would perceive African Americans as thugs. Not only were African American s stereotyped as thugs, but they re also seen as being ghetto. African American s are not the only ones stereotyped, but so are Hispanics and Asians. Hispanics in media are portrayed as being illegal immigrants, uneducated, and housekeepers. Asians are portrayed as foreigners, geeks, and kung fu fighters. Literature Review A study over social issues done by Mastro mentions that in our history we have yet to experience a world free from complications of race. One thing she mentions that contributes to race complications is the mass media. Not only are we influenced by movies and television, but from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Class Inequality And The American Class A response to Class in America 2009 makes some good points why Americans hate the word class. Class is a word to classify a group of people to a certain social status. Americans do not like to be put in a category based off of their money. Gregory Mantsios the author, explains how we view ourselves. For example, most American citizens identify themselves with work. Mantsios gives other reasons, and a solution to fix the American class labeling. Mantsios made some really good points about how Americas view word class, and made me agree with some of his myth. He also presented a weak solution that would go against our government to fix the problem of class in America. Class in America by Gregory Mantsios is a profile of class inequality in today s society in America. He begins by mentioning that people in America, rich or poor, do not seem to talk about class or class differences. He says that is why classes divide. He mentions myths most Americans believe that this country is classless, and full of equal opportunity, and replaces them with realities. These realities are that class inequality is not pretty bad but getting worse. Emphasized by profiles of citizens of various classes. He concludes that the main problems are capitalism, racism, and androcentric, and the solution is redistribution of wealth. Mantsios says, Workers are most likely to identify with their employer, industry, or occupational group (177). When you ask most people what they do for a living they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hamlet: The Prince of Denmark is a hallmark example of Shakespeare s contemplation of social tolerance and equity in the exploration of human sociology. In this play, we see the malignant ambition of newly throned King Claudius, the questionable decision making of Queen Gertrude, and the emotionally preying and encompassing force of murdered King Hamlet s ghost, construct the grounds for contemplation of human drama; this contemplation is essentially distilled and literally embodied by the character of Prince Hamlet. Moreover, the truth, hidden at the onset of this play, sets the internal and external conflict for Prince Hamlet as well as the figurative stage for a study of human character and action, or alternatively, ego and power. Prince Hamlet s own ego is festered by the crime against his father: a murder committed by Hamlet s ambitious uncle, Claudius, whose own ego has led him down a the path of a usurper. Yet, Shakespeare exposes that the pains of human ego are not morally equivalent between these two. Hamlet s pain and feelings of slight come at the potential truth that his father was murder. His ego is that of a wounded sense of self created out of the anguish he feels in his inability to take deliberate action against Claudius, driven out of the lack of evidence to truly ... This might not seem like much, but it compares to the other alternatives knowing only 4% of people use solar power. People have been collecting energy from moving water for centuries, and why not put this to use. I believe that hydroelectric energy is the ВЁbestВЁ source for a few reasons. First i m going to define what being the best means. The best means that it is overall going to help us in the future by using what he already have. It doesn t have to necessarily be the cheapest but it does have to do the job and last as long as possible so that the country can be able to thrive with an alternate energy source. The first reason itВґs the best is that the country is already using it. It s the most used source of renewable energy .This makes it easier to expand the usage as more people are influenced. The second reason is that it uses materials we already have. Water covers 71% of the earth, and this can make hydroelectric energy the most reasonable to use. The Bystander Effect By Bibb Latane And John Darley Overview On March 13, 1964 thirty eight neighbors failed to intervene when a 28 year old woman named Katherine Kitty Genovese was being murdered behind the building. (Manning, Levine, Collins, 2007). This incident proposed the experiment of the Bystander Effect by Bibb LatanГ© and John Darley, among other scientists, to find out why thirty eight people had not done anything to help during this situation (LatanГ© Darley, 1969). According to LatanГ© and Darley (1969), The Bystander Effect has three main explanations behind it, which includes diffusion of responsibility, evaluation apprehension, and pluralistic ignorance (Darley LatanГ©, 1968). Diffusion of responsibility withdraws a person from exhibiting a helping behavior when there are other bystanders present because it is expected that others can contribute to the helping behavior, and that the outcome is not just on one person s shoulders (LatanГ© et al., 2002). On the other hand, when a person imagines that there are no other people present, or that the people present are not able to engage in a helping behavior, a person will act as if he or she was alone and will be more likely to intervene in the situation (Darley, Teger, Lewis, 1973). Before acting during an emergency, a person is most likely to scan around and observe whether others are already taking responsibility, or are about to take responsibility for it; if those people in the scene of an emergency are not doing anything, then the person will feel ... Often in the discussions on emotionality, there is a connection to the Big Five trait, neuroticism. In this account, a comparative approach to both the biological perspective and the evolutionary perspective will be assessed, as well as an evaluation of the trait evident in my personal life. Ultimately, the intent of this report is to adequately define the trait and its relevance to personality psychology, while also mentioning the theoretical and empirical literature of the development of the trait in individuals. It will also discuss the maturation of the trait within myself and its connection to the biological and evolutionary perspectives in respect to the views and applications of the trait currently in use in the field of psychology. • 39. Effects Of Soft Drugs On Society, And On Adolescent Youth 1 Introduction I have written this essay in response to the essay prompt Recreational use of soft drugs such as marijuana or ecstasy is less harmful than alcohol consumption and therefore should be decriminalised. In this essay I will talk about the effects that soft drugs have on society, and on adolescent youth. I will also talk about my position on this matter, and what I believe is the right course of action to take in regards to the essay prompt. After learning about the issues regarding both sides or the argument, I would choose to support those who oppose decriminalization of any drug. Drugs simply create problems that affect society in different ways. People believe that making drugs legal will take away the temptation to use them. This idea is wrong and far from logical. If the drugs are legalized, then they will be more accessible to the young, addicted and ignorant. 2 Body Drugs have been a problem in society for a very long time and it is still an ongoing subject of debate. Different organisations work hard to keep people from using drugs, though a new issue has arisen. During the last few years there have been discussions in some countries to decriminalize soft drugs, including cannabis and ecstasy. I believe it is wrong to legalize any sort of recreational drug, no matter what sort of effect it has on the user and society. All drugs have a negative impact on the issue, whether it be short term or long term side effects. There are already serious issues ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Fear In Hamlet Hamlet: A Fear y Tale In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Prince Hamlet does not prove to be the stereotypical perfect prince. Shakespeare s choice in making Hamlet vulnerable, anxious and afraid of the stress of his life allows for the reader to relate to him. Each human experiences fear and its mysteries. However, in order to move forward in life, it is inevitable to face these fears. Indecisive minds, like Hamlet, can grow by taking the time to comprehend their fears, letting the fears guide their thoughts and choosing to use their creative imaginations to make decisions. When people are struggling with making an important decision for their future, they can become paralyzed by their constant questioning. They question their capabilities and the uncertainty of the future makes them anxious. This fear is shown in Hamlet s extensive analysis of his situation. He exhausts every angle of the problem before making a decision. He questions his capability as a leader, his anxiety taking over his thoughts. In Act I Scene 5, Hamlet states, This time is out of joint. O cursed spite, That ever was I born to set it right! (Hamlet, Act 1 Scene 5, line 205). Hamlet s fear is crushing his self confidence. If he had taken the time to listen to his fears, his anxiety would have decreased. Learning how to analyze fear is an important tool in making wise decisions. From the crows to the roads, and even the title itself, the novelshows show many different points of symbolism. As the book goes on, the amount of symbolism appears, making the character and the symbolism more understand and attention grabbing towards the reader making them not want to put the book down. When people think crows they think annoying black birds that try to steal food from gardens, but in Cold Mountain, it is a big part of the story, as well as a reoccurring symbol within the novel. The reader first reads about the crows right when the book begins, when Inman was younger and in school. When he was just a little kid in school, he was being mischievous and decided to throw his hat out the window, but when it landed it took a shape of something. It landed far out across the playground at the edge of the hayfield and rested there black as the shadow of a crowsquatted on the ground (Frazier 5). It is a well known, universal text, and with each new interpreter who translates, there is a new version of the story brought to the surface. William Blake partakes in this conflict of ideas through his artwork rather than his writing. His art reflects his own personal view of the text and has both similar and differentiating opinions than Mitchell s own on the key events in the book. By directing the attention onto not only the main illustration, but also the art located on the border, one is able to further deduce Blake s interpretation. Shown in Figure A, directly under the main illustration there appears to be two birds, a crow and an owl, in some sort of quarrel. Based on the context of the dispute happening in the main illustration, it is safe to assume that these birds represent the opposing sides of the argument. The crow, appearing more aggravated, shows more correlation to the three friend s side, and the owl, while alarmed but not nearly as aggressive looking, leans more towards Job s. The crow is a common symbol of evil, bad luck, and even death. If Blake drew the connection from the crow to the three friends, then it can be inferred that Blake has a rather negative outlook on them and their side of this fight. Rather than looking into the logic behind it, Blake seems to base his interpretation of these characters on their words and actions from the text, which paint them as truly terrible acquaintances. In order to further depict this, Blake illustrates the three friends in the most judgemental fashion: lined up together, all with their pointer fingers outstretched in accusation towards Job. Their expressions do not fall short of condemning or angry. Job on the other hand, connected to the owl, is seen as a wise man in Blake s eyes. At the very least, Blake agrees with Job s reasoning and sticks to the wise side of the is Job a wise man debate. Job himself also gives way to Blake s thoughts through his body language in the illustration. Eyes cast to the heavens, palms faced out in a questionly manner, his look of grief and questioning directly portrays Blake s vision of Job s immense suffering . This theme of suffering once again connects to the border of the print. The desperate looking humanoid figures bound by chains lead to the conclusion that Blake overemphasizes (and ... Characteristics Of Eleanor Roosevelt The quote significant figures in history always have flaws rings true for several historical figures, however, in regards to Eleanor Roosevelt, it can be argued that her achievements far outweigh her flaws. Eleanor s contradictory policies and causes created confusion and inspired critics, although her compassionate attitude inspired several positive changes despite this. At the time, a lot of her actions were considered to be controversial; however, as society has evolved a lot of people can view her as being forward thinking and just. Her attitude towards her role as a First Lady was also quite presumptuous, however, some may view this as a positive trait rather than a flaw. Despite Eleanor Roosevelts flaws as a politician and public figure, she was highly influential and changed the path of history and minority groups throughout America. In many documents describing Eleanor Roosevelt, she is explained as being either one of two oppositional extremes an amazing humanitarian, or a stoic business woman. These kind of contradictions penalise Eleanor, creating confusion amongst Americans. Some causes of hers were also contradictory for example, she was a strong believer in liberal women, yet rejected the Equal Rights Amendment. Eleanor believed that the Equal Rights Amendment would jeopardise the laws she had fought to put into place for women such as minimum wagelaws and exclusion from dangerous jobs. However, Eleanor was and remains to be an influential figure for strong women worldwide. She stated in Redbook Magazine, Women must learn to play the game as men do. She worked hard to ensure women were involved in politics, by emphasising that women speak their minds on the issues they face. Being such an active and outspoken First Lady was revolutionary and extremely important for the country to see. In this way, Eleanor s contradictions can be overlooked as the causes she worked for inspired many generations of socially aware Americans. • 56. The Three Major Arguments For The Existence Of God Some of the three major arguments for the existence of God are cosmological, ontological, and teleological arguments. Cosmological argument is the reasoning that the being of the universe is powerful proof for the existence of a God who made it. There are two main forms of cosmological argument, the modal and temporal. Modal cosmological argument, also known as the argument from contingency, recommends that because the world may not have existed, we then need some clarification of why it does exist. When there is more than one likelihood, something has to decide which of the possibilities is understood clearly. Therefore the world is contingent, because there has to be a logical reason for its existence. This form of argument also claims that the only type of existence that doesn t need any clarification is a being that does not failed to exist such as God. Temporal cosmological argument, also known as the Kalam argument, contends that all evidence are that there is a point in life at which the world began to exist, and that this starting must either have been caused or uncaused. The cosmological argument used by Aquinas declares that since nothing originates from nothing. Therefore the world must have been brought into reality by something outside it, which can be called God . Ontological argument is an argument that is not based on inspection of the universe, but rather on rationality alone. This type of argument reasons from the study of being or existence (ontology). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
