Conceptual framing for educational research through Deleuze and GuattariDavid R Cole
This presentation will address the issue of conceptual framing for educational research through the philosophy of Deleuze & Guattari. The picture of what this means is complicated by the fact that in their combined texts, Deleuze and Guattari present different notions of conceptual framing. In their final joint text, What is Philosophy? conceptual framing appears in the context of concept creation, and helps with the analysis of western philosophy through concepts such as ‘geophilosophy’. In their joint texts on Capitalism and Schizophrenia, concepts are aligned with pre-personal and individualising flows that pass through any context. This presentation will make sense of the disparate deployment of concepts in the work of Deleuze & Guattari to aid clear conceptual work in the growing international field of educational research inspired by their philosophy.
Academia has a mixed reaction to collaborative work. On the one hand, it is a practice widely used by academics; on the other hand students are warned against the evils of plagiarism. This paper will look at these seemingly paradoxical attitudes and ask how, if at all, student learning can be both collaboratively generated yet individually original, and also how the products of a collaboratively generated student submission could be formally assessed. I’m going to begin by briefly looking at two different views about the role of the scholar in HE and then considering two different ideas about originality. After that I’m going to look at how collaboration works in the Sciences before highlighting some collaborative practices in the Humanities. I’ll end by asking what type of learning design could support a collaborative approach to learning in the Arts and Humanities and suggesting a couple of promising ones.
What is “content” and how might we (not) get beyond it? Norm Friesen
At first glance, the meaning of the term "content" could not be more obvious. It is the stuff we share, study, watch, create and mashup on the Web. However, a closer look at content as substance, as educational, as opposed to form, and even --deposed or enthroned on the Web-- as king, raises many more questions. What is the ³educational² nature of content and how does it relate to its (re)usability? How does form (e.g. learning designs, management systems) relate to content? And what makes it valuable or valueless?
This presentation taps into ideas of curriculum as an overall structure that both enables and limits the coherence of educational ³contents,² contexts and purposes. It looks at the issue of specificity and irreplaceability that is implied in the notion of content as substance and
materiality -as something that is actually specific to a place and time, rather than ubiquitous and (theoretically) endlessly adaptable. Our point, in short, is to show that content is something to understand more fully before we leave it behind.
Dr. William Allan Kritsonis earned his BA in 1969 from Central Washington University, Ellensburg, Washington. In 1971, he earned his M.Ed. from Seattle Pacific University. In 1976, he earned his PhD from the University of Iowa. In 1981, he was a Visiting Scholar at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, and in 1987 was a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California.

Among the practices which have emerged through the New Lecturers Programme in 2011-12, there are three that test the limits to online learning:
massive open on-line courses (moocs),
virtual conferences as a means of assessment, and
distributed collaboration as a means of working in learning sets.
Taken together, these practices allow us to examine the role of the university and to re-imagine a place for institutions in a world where openness, access and community have come to underpin academic knowledge.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.

Most academics - in the humanities and social sciences, particularly -
come at their subject these days from a relativist perspective: knowledge
is "in here"; there is no knowledge without the knower; knowledge is
"constructed" in cultural contexts; knowledge is not "given" or "out
there". There is no "absolute truth".
This position is quite different from the classical approach: knowledge is
"out there"; the "laws of nature" are independent from the mind of the
investigator; there is "truth" to be discovered. This approach depends on
the "independent, objective observer", who can stand aside from the
observed phenomenon and form an unbiased view.
This classical approach is the traditional position of many scientists, as
well the commonsense view of how knowledge is produced, which
(according to Scollon) is held by an international public discourse of
commerce and government.

We couldn’t ask for a better framing context in which to enter this discussion.
Philosophy, or theory – learning theory in this case – is often regarded with suspicion by teaching practitioners, even if they are well versed in the theoretical traditions of their research discipline. But there is much misuse of theory and some good reason to be suspicious. I hope to be able to address this suspicion.
… and Brookfield also regards theory as one of the four lenses through which the teacher can gain insight into their practice. The other three are: their autobiography, their students and their colleagues.
You might want to go to the discussion forum, now, and consider this question. Or carry on and come back to it. But, do just think for a moment. How is it that we come to know things in different ways?

So, to begin to address the purpose of a theory of learning let’s look at higher education in the context of the institutions of society.
What about banking?
What about security: military and police?
As the relationships between the institutions of society evolvie, there are, as we might expect, differing views of what that institution known as a university might be…
This in a nutshell defines UK HE policy. Ars gratia artis? I don’t think so. But, wasn’t that always a bourgeois luxury? Can we understand “social cohesion, regional development and global well being” through a myriad of local perspectives? Is this only a neoliberal, free-trade, carpetbagging vision? To whom in society must universities “demonstrate their contribution”?
Set this against a different view of higher education: the university or, maybe, the academy.“Education and training relevant to the labour market”, or “nothing less than the continuing body of reason itself”?
Nomothetic: theory of critical theoryBut, isn’t all theory critical?
Positivism was, in origin a radical reaction to the conservative forces of society, particularlythe church. But as Scollon and many others have shown, that utilitarian rationality of the Enlightenment, built on a positivist approach to knowledge,came to protect an exclusive “club” of “civilised men” and excluded the “savages” i.e. colonised people and (most) women.
Socioculturalism takes in a wide range of post-positivist (or new positivist) and critical realist strands of thought including Marxism, Psychoanalysis, Linguistics, Literary criticism, Feminism, and many other bodies of thought. More a broad perspective than a theory as such, socio-culturalism having to some extent supplanted positivism might be seenas a new orthodoxy. And these days, as an orthodoxy is under attack from two directions: a post-foundational emergent systems view of actor networks and a number of new fundamentalisms, both hyper-rational as well as mystical/religious in nature.
