Two Kinds Conflict
In two kinds we find ourselves being the audience to a mother daughter conflict. It
is a conflict of cultural differences, pain, disappointments. A story of a mother who
puts all of her hopes and dreams on to her daughter, wanting nothing more then for
her to become a prodigy, live the life she (or her two deceased twins) never could.
Jing mei is the protagonist in the short story Two Kinds . We are confronted with a
young girl who herself does not believe she has the talent or the looks to become a
start. Initially she is beyond eager to please her mother, make her mothers wishes for
her come true. She wants nothing more then to make her parents proud. She
knows her parent s approval lies in her becoming a prodigy. Yet as time passes we
are confronted with a Jing mei that slowly looses hope, the hope of ever fulfilling
her mother s dreams, for no matter how much effort Mrs. Woo puts in to molding
her in to a child prodigy, Jing mei simply does not have the needed talent, or drive.
Up until now she is a very consistent character, we expect her to always follow her
mother s lead, without rebellion, yet her character changes towards the second half. ...
One can almost get a sense of her soul crumbling with each test she fails. Jung mei
reaches a point of utter darkness, not knowing who she is, or how she could ever be
worth anything. Yet it is in this moment that we see the biggest change in her
character, it is the constant failure that ultimately drives her to rebel, become the
strong prodigy her mother wanted her to be. She is a very round character, and
undergoes many developments throughout her childhood, all the way in to adulthood.
In her rebellion against her mother lies her strength. She spends many years
purposely rebelling against her mother, it almost seems as if it has become her
personal mission to not excel at life, just to contra her
