- 3. 1. Location You will find the permanent ice biome in polar ice caps of the Arctic, Greenland and the Antarctica.
- 4. 2. Climate There is less than 50cm of precipitation/year with most of it being in the form of snow. In the summer, the temperatures can range anywhere from 9°C on the coast to -30°C inland. Antarctica has a recorded low temperature of -89°C however, average winter temperatures are about -30°C.
- 5. 3. Physical Features There are very strong winds and almost no soil or fresh water due to the freezing conditions of this biome.
- 6. 4. Plants Lichens (as shown above) are one of the few plants that have successfully adapted to the harsh conditions of the permanent ice biome. As well as lichens, many different varieties of moss can survive in the arctic, and there are two flowering plants that have also adapted.
- 7. 5. Animals Polar bears, walruses, seals, arctic foxes and even some insects are all animals that reside in the arctic area of the permanent ice biome. In the Antarctic there are penguins and other marine animals such as seals. These animals all have one thing in common, they all have some sort of insulation to protect them from the icy cold conditions.
