The biome of permanent ice is located in polar land masses, polar ice caps, and high mountain areas. It has a climate with less than 50 cm of annual precipitation mostly as snow, average winter temperatures below -30°C, and average summer temperatures from 3 to 14°C. Physical features include strong winds, lots of sunlight, very small soil, and surfaces that are mainly ice and sometimes mountainous. Plants are limited to dark-colored lichens, moss, and a few flowering plants, while animals include polar bears, arctic foxes, penguins, and other species with adaptations like fat layers and thick fur to retain body heat in the extreme cold.
